Even as the IRS faces growing heat over Lois G. Lerner and the tea party targeting scandal, a government watchdog said Wednesday it’s pursuing cases against three other tax agency employees and offices suspected of illegal political activity in support of President Obama and fellow Democrats. In one case the Office of Special Counsel, which investigates federal employees who conduct politics on government time, said it was “commonplace” in a Dallas IRS office for employees to have pro-Obama screensavers on their computers, and to have campaign-style buttons and stickers at their office.
In another case, a worker at the tax agency’s customer help line urged taxpayers “to re-elect President Obama in 2012 by repeatedly reciting a chant based on the spelling of his last name,” the Office of Special Counsel said in a statement.
OSC said it is seeking “significant disciplinary action” against that employee.
Another IRS employee in Kentucky has agreed to serve a 14-day suspension for blasting Republicans in a conversation with a taxpayer.“They’re going to take women back 40 years,” the IRS employee said in a conversation that was recorded. The employee also said that “if you vote for a Republican, the rich are going to get richer and the poor are going to get poorer.”
That employee went on to tell the taxpayer she knew she wasnÂ’t supposed to be voicing her political opinions, and asked the taxpayer not to say anything.
Lois Lerner's lawyer commented, for some reason, questioning the timing of these revelations, calling it "odd."
And meanwhile the House Government Oversight Committee voted, on party lines, 23-14, to refer Ms. Lerner for criminal prosecution, for all the good that does.
Now Eric Holder gets to decide if he wants to prosecute one of Obama's minions for harassing Obama's critics. Gee, I wonder what he will decide.
Rich Lowry noted the obvious, that giving Lerner immunity to secure her testimony would be a double-edge sword. On one hand, you get her testimony. On the other hand, you don't get to prosecute her.
This is particularly a problem when you consider that Lerner's move, after securing immunity, might be to (possibly falsely) claim all responsibility and refuse to provide honest testimony about other actors in the 501(c)3 scandal.
Now, I know, hypothetically, that one could then prosecute such a hypothetical witness for perjury and strip him of the prior immunity. But then that all would just wind up referring the matter to... Eric J. Holder.
What we need is a true independent prosecutor, someone who could, if he found sufficient evidence, prosecute Lerner or anyone else who provably harassed citizens for political purposes.
And of course that's what Obama will steadfastly refuse to do.
Historically, these things have been forced on the Executive by a media which kept making the appearance of a cover-up a nagging issue for the Executive, presenting him with two bad options: Continue taking the PR hit of appearing to be protecting a misbehaving partisan employee, or roll the dice on an independent prosecutor, who might find no prosecutable crime.
But of course we're not in that world anymore. The media won't even suggest that perhaps Eric J. Holder and Barack Obama are not the most disinterested persons available to investigate their partisans in the bureaucracy... or themselves.

Now this one I have a hard time being concerned about. It's one thing if the employees were handing out those buttons and stickers to the general public, or even to fellow employees. I would consider that to be political activity. But if they were showing THEIR OWN political leanings, and weren't trying to proselytize to others? Then I don't have a problem with it. It tells me who the stupid people are in the office and whose opinions I can safely disregard.
The other two, though, I have a problem with. Especially the creepy-ass chant lady. WTF?

Never. A special prosecutor who fails to find a crime will fear failure and will always find a crime.

The worst part is they are all protected by union interference.
Even if we were to elect a responsible President and Congress that had a spine, we couldn't do a housecleaning to flush the turds out of the various agencies.
These folks are protected and inviolate.

I have said it before, but will say it again. Every one of us, and everyone we know, needs to write a real, paper letter to our senators and representatives about this. They generally don't read them, but if a stack of letters about the threat to the country the IRS is, they will be forced to take some action.
The IRS has to be shut down. Replace it with a consumption tax. This organization has the ability to look at your bank statements, investment accounts, real property - and to close those acccounts without a warrant. Not to mention your medical records, now. Given that we know for a fact that the white house coordinated with the IRS tax exempt commissioner, and we also know for a fact that the IRS leaked information to democrat groups, and we know for a fact that they targeted conservative organizations, we cannot allow the IRS to continue in its present form. They are a partisan organization that has unprecedented access to their victims' personal information and account access.

You know, think about women 40 years ago. You think Republicans really want women to be drugged out hippies who have slept with every warm body in the commune? But hey, there's legal abortion (in 1974) and Planned Parenthood for the inevitable "accidents" that occur. If anything, that's what Dems think of women today (hiya there, Fluke!). If you want to tar Republicans for wanting to take women back, at least be accurate. We want the 1950s, when no woman worked, women were barefoot, pregnant, and in the kitchen fixing us a sammich. Ammiright?

Openly showing your support like that shows that you cannot do your job without bias. Clear and simple.

What about bumper stickers? If I had a "Don't Tread on Me" bumper sticker on my car, would that count as bias that would require me to be censured, since I work for State government? I see political stickers in the parking lot where I work all the time. I see people with Obama and Pelosi pictures in their offices. My co-worker down the hall had an anti-Sarah Palin comic strip on his office door for the longest time.
I recognize all of these people as nutjobs. But I don't think they're taking part in political activity on the job. I think they're just tin-eared, insensitive asshats.
There's a line between self-expression and political activity.

I know. But it still exists. I don't like the idea of criminally prosecuting someone for something that amounts to free speech, IMO. If they get overly enthusiastic about it and start braying about how much they love Obammy and want to suck his big chocolate cock, then that's a matter for internal HR to handle. I don't see it as criminal activity. And I know damn well that if I started saying it was okay to treat such speech as criminal activity, then the first time I happen to mention something positive about Ted Cruz around the office my ass is getting hauled off to jail.
Again, I don't know the specifics of the Dallas IRS office incident. But if it's just some employees hanging up their "I LOVE OBAMA!" regalia in their cubicles, then I'm not sold on it being a crime. Just deeply, deeply stupid and inconsiderate.

No, it isn't. What it is is a relentless grinding down. We have no voice, no leader and no cause. "Fuck the IRS" only works with people who pay taxes (i.e., not the FSA) and, it seems, only with conservatives. The GOPe doesn't give a shit.
Who will organize a massive, country-wide tax strike? Who would call for it? And further, who would participate, seeing how the government is treating anyone who dares resist it (see the BLM in Nevada)?
They know we won't shoot first. And if someone on our side did shoot, they would be instantly demonized, discredited and dismissed as a lone nut. We've been ground down for so long that there is no will to resist.

Your car is your property. The equipment in the IRS offices is the property of the Federal government.
Not a good comparison.
Allowing campaigning in a work place only encourages partisan bias. In a government work place, it guarantees it. Granted Fed employee unions are a bigger problem and the campaigning thing is probably last on the list of them, it's still a bad phenomena.

How is it campaigning though? And while the equipment and office space may belong to the government (so I can see them censuring the employees for the screensaver or for adhering stickers to their computers), I don't see how the buttons are anything but personal property. If I bring in a picture of me and my family to display on my desk, and it happens to have been taken at a campaign rally for a Tea Party-aligned candidate, does that count as campaigning? What if there are signs in the background that say "SO AND SO FOR CONGRESS?" Is that campaigning?
You all know that there is no more leftist-hating rightwing wacko bird than me. I am not sympathizing with these leftist assnuggets. But when it comes to lawfare, the left excels at it. I do not like providing them any kind of cudgel that they will then wield willy nilly.

And just this very morning, I was asking our legal types if it would be a violation of any laws to even be on this website as a government employee...
What did they say?
Tangent: back when Napster was a thing we got an e-mail from our company's General Counsel telling us to remove any downloaded music from our work computers.
Being a smartass, I called him and said "what about the fair use doctrine? Can I keep stuff I also own on CD?"
And he said, "I don't care if you download the entire Beatles anthology, I just have to be on record as forbidding it". I liked that guy.

I don't know why he would think it is odd. It was intended to help his client. Instead of the news being about how the management of the IRS conspired with Obama to shut down the political speech of his adversaries, instead the story is about ticky-tack stuff like someone having an Obama screen saver. Or even the worker who got in a conversation with a caller and voiced her personal opinion about how awful she thinks the Republicans are. Yes, there should be consequences for those employees. But, let's keep our eye on the ball. The federal government, obviously under orders from Obama, has been engaging in activity designed to harass and silence Obama's political adversaries.

... let me get this straight, if I contrast the number of deaths in the US in the 5 years before before Jan 20, 2009 with those in the five years since, all those extras deaths were cause by Barack Obama (or is it that George W Bush saved more lives) ?
And YES, both comparisons are equally racist ... meaning none.

When the government ignores the law and runs as though its an autocracy, the response should be equal and unequivocal.
I've had enough of an AG and Administration that selectively enforces, obfuscates and ignores the law. I am equally tired of the wimpy, cowardly, Vihy-Republicans in Congress who do absolutely zero to oppose this authoritarianism.

The people who answer the phone for the IRS 1) are the same type of person who staffs the TSA checkpoints and 2) know almost nothing about taxation.
The IRS folks answer tax questions correctly at about the same rate that TSA screeners catch terrorists. (Hint: the rate approaches zero.)

It's enumerated, all right, in the Northwest Ordinance, the "second constitution."
You can just about date the birth of RINO-ism to that document's adoption.
Millions of people, having been raised under it, believe in their heart of hearts that education is, in fact, a federal power and responsibility. And they're Republicans.
Bar-talking, you can always make the case for liberty, of several stripes. You never get very far opposing compulsory one-size education. It's ground into us. Without it there would be no community theater, or football. You wouldn't recognize the place.

Sophomore Trinity McCool told USA TODAY that the suspect, after attacking several other people nearby, took a swipe at her and friend with what looked like a butcher knife.
"I saw his face, the look in his eyes, I was horrified," she said.
Another student, Nate Scimio, blocked the attack, however, by sticking out his arm as the blade came down.
"(Nate) took the stab right in his arm and saved my friend and me," McCool said. "I'm pretty sure it was his instinct. He didn't want anyone to get hurt. He told everybody to run away."
McCool said Scimio also apparently set off the fire alarm that sent students rushing to the exits. Scimio later tweeted a selfie from the hospital showing his right arm in a bandage...
That Scimio is a good kid. Bless him and his cool thinking.

I would agree in many circumstances, but I see a difference between transacting business with someone and being expected to embrace a lifestyle that is repugnant to you.
If I was a janitor, I would not want the contract for cleaning up at a gay bathhouse. I'm sure there would be others who would be happy to have the business, but it wouldn't be for me. If I were a photographer, I would not want to photograph a gay wedding. I don't want to be the one who is responsible for making sure the photos come out well. The couple is going to want pictures that they can look at for years and bring back fond memories of the occasion. The photographer would be the one who composes those pictures. Telling the couple to embrace for the next shot. Getting the kiss in a light that makes it looks good to those who are into that kind of thing. Not for me. Thanks, but no thanks.

Time was, the IRS was everyone's whipping boy (OK, no dog whistles in there, relax). Both parties on the Hill would - sometimes unreasonably, unfairly - dog the IRS because ..... drum roll ..... political gold, that's why. Duh.
So now is there some good reason the GOP cannot engage in what used to be standard (and bipartisan) reflexive easy cheap political hatchetry, but this time with gusto, and the added (sinister, unbelievable) issue of politicization of the IRS?
In a galaxy far far away, long long ago, the titanic, explosive, incredible political issues and scandals the GOP has stacked neatly (catalogued, pre-wrapped almost) on its electoral plate would have been unimaginable. Because the country wasn't as lawless and debased, no major political party was as disgracefully irresponsible, arrogant, and alien.
But it's probably too much to hope that this November will be an even bigger national earthquake than 2010, and ABOUT SOMETHING, not just "give the other guys a chance" mindless lazy voting. Yeah. Too much to hope. Just thought I'd not some basic political realities from another age (that would be, oh, 10 years ago, at most).
