CAC's Senate Forecast: GOP In Driver's Seat to Win Senate
— Ace

The Meatball analyzes the competitive races.

He begins by noting five "firewalls" Democrats are counting on to stop a wildfire, each set back a little deeper into Democratic territory than the last.

Most of the firewalls are now on fire.

However, as of March 2014, the GOP has locked away two races, closed in on a third, well on their way with two more, and slight favorites in yet two more, giving the Republicans room to make an effective push into more purplish territory. They are fiercely contesting an open race in Michigan and now an incumbent in Colorado, and are threatening to do so in Iowa and New Hampshire. The higher they raise their maximum potential gains, the lower the number of races the Democrats can afford to write off. Despite the slacking off in Virginia, this remains a challenging map for those left-of-center.

As of today, the Democrats are in deep trouble. We aren’t forecasting a landslide win for the GOP — eight months is a lifetime. But with the second firewall already burning and Republican advancements into states they failed to win in 2012, they may be well on their way.

Of course I want the GOP to win the Senate, at the very least it will stop Zero from loading the courts with his insane judges. That's the one thing the GOP senators were doing right, which caused Reid to change the cloture rules. But overall, it doesn't tickle my balls like it used to.

45 Honestly, it's better that Republicans win than Democrats, wherever and for whatever. But - the damage that has been done to this country will not be fixed, soon, by a good election cycle. Especially if a bunch of careerist time-servers get in. Fixing the damage will be a long march, and in my opinion led by a Party that probably doesn't exist at this time. I'd rather have all Democrats out on their asses, nevertheless.

60 Not gonna happen and here's one reason why that pundits aren't thinking over.
Yes, Democrats are polling very badly, people can't stand 'em. But Republicans are polling badly as well, and that's because the GOP is not presenting a valid alternative loudly and consistently enough, all they're doing is saying "they suck!" Yes, they suck, but why should we vote for you, who we think suck, too?
When it comes down to it, most voters will go with the devil they know, leaving someone in office rather than someone they think also sucks. Why change for a different suck?
That, and the machine will make sure any close national election is a Democrat win.
Remember how the GOP was going to pick up all those seats in 2012, maybe even win a majority? Remember all that glee? Yeah, that really worked out, huh?

66 If the GOP in Virginia is smart enough to nominate Gillespie, even if he doesn't win, it will help in all those other races. If the Dems have to prop up Warner with funds in Virginia, it means Col and Michigan won't get the dollars from the Dems, and makes those seats easier pickups. While Gillespie winning in Virginia will take out someone who could be a Dem Presidential or VP candidate in 16 or 20. But, alas, this is the Virginia GOP and they will choose some neophyte that can't raise funds and will get blown out at the polls and allow the Dems to take money from Virginia to other competitive states. It is in their DNA to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Hey, that's my family you're talking about!  My great aunt, educator, spinster and constant companion of a woman named Ruth whom I never met.  It wasn't until she was dead and I was a young adult that I tumbled to it.  "So, Dad, was Aunt Alice..."

The Bandersnatches derive from the kind of NH swamp Yankee that pronounces her name as "aren't Alice".

For a week or so there was reason to be optimistic in CO, mainly because the gun owners will show up to hammer the state legislature dems and the guv for their gun control laws, plus Gardner is a much better candidate.

However, the dems just passed new election rules which allow same day registration and voting.  Same day.   Repubs are gonna get crushed unless the 2A's come out huge.

There were over 12,000 votes iirc found to be have counted illegally in the last senate race where Buck lost by 16,000.

All the Dems up for reelection in 2016 are in blue states. CA, CO, CT, MA, NV, NY, OR, VT, WA.

114 For clarity: lean: 1-5 point win for the given party moderate 5<10 win likely 10<15 win solid 15< win So for example, I forecast on election day Franken winning re-election by a margin between 5 and 10 points. States listed as tossups are anyone's guess, whether that's thanks to polling averages (see Alaska, where it's a split decision with Sullivan versus Begich) or because we simply lack any data on the race as it looks to be (Gardner now vs Udall- when the previously weaker GOP field was trailing him by only 3-5 points). This isn't a confidence chart, it's a forecast of how the votes will fall. It will change accordingly, with the data we have. So far, Michigan in this non-Presidential year is looking very good- the Democrat is struggling with their campaign, lashing out against private citizens and facing blowback for it from the local media, trailing the Republican in fundraising, and trailing the Republican consistently in the polling- Land has led in 5 out of the last 6, including PPP, which never showed Romney ahead or close in Michigan in all of 2012.

The circular firing squad in NC (with idiot TP morons continuing to back Greg Brannon even though he's a lying piece of shit who conned money out of business investors and just got found liable for civil fraud) gives me pause, and who knows what will happen in places like CO or AK (if Joe Miller wins the primary we're doomed), but right now things are falling into place.

I still fear that to be the case, but right now, Republicans are tripping over their dicks so forcefully they're winding up back on their feet. Hell, the radio show I did just 2 months ago with wiser- you can hear my pessimism. If the Republicans collapse, you'll see it in the chart. If they stay the course, you'll see it in the chart. I'm cautiously bullish on the Senate side of things, pessimistic on the gubernatorial side (that CT tied poll means that race is now lean Dem- the R was leading in the earlier one which some excited Republicans somehow forgot; Corbett is toast, LePage is hanging by a thread, and Scott has to depend on Crist imploding for him to win re-election). My goal this year is to have the most accurate final call the day before election day, and on election night, to deliver the results and calls the fastest of any source, good for us or bad for us. For the record- Sink wins Tuesday by 3-5 points barring a massive surge in Republican turnout. It's her district to lose.

155 Let's say the GOP does win, and takes over totally. Let's say they have such a powerful majority they can push through anything they want and shove it down Obama's throat. Let's say they are strongly conservative and further that they ignore the press and simply do what needs to be done, by some act of God.
So in a flurry of legislation, they repeal Obamacare, obliterate the Department of Education and several other agencies, slash spending by 25%, balance the budget, and reverse most of the lunatic crap the EPA has been doing, and overall rewrites Washington DC so its strictly federal, not interfering within the states. Then, lets say that they detonate the IRS, rewriting tax law to a simple, flat tax you can fill out on your coffee break on a postcard.
While we're squirming with orgiastic glee at the wave of conservatism... hundreds of thousands of federal jobs have just been cut, and now the unemployment rate skyrockets. The short-term reaction of having all this bureaucracy and businesses sucking off the government teat means a dive in growth as the economy shifts over.
Suddenly its a great depression, as the press puts it. Conservatives have Hoovered us again! Their plans destroyed the economy! Look at all these black people out of work because of the federal job cuts (need I repeat that there are more than twice as many blacks working for the federal government than the percentage of general population?).
The GOP is hurled out of office in the next election and the Democrat candidate for president wins in a landslide. And they benefit from the huge surge in economy that takes place due to the conservative changes.
Are you feeling me yet?

When did the media start scheduling the Senate votes?

The Majority Leader decides which subcommittee will get the bills, and he knows damn sure which ones will kill those bills so they don't even make it to the committees for a vote, much less the Senate floor.

West Hollywood's increasing diversity inspires mixed emotions

Always known as a gay haven, West Hollywood is facing an identity crisis as its population and commercial scene—and society as a whole—evolve.

LA Times: http://tinyurl.com/qx3zp6e

Councilman John Duran and his gay colleagues on the West Hollywood City Council never expected a backlash when they voted recently to remove the rainbow flag from above City Hall.

For Duran, who is gay, taking down the flag wasn't about slighting gays but sending a message about the city's diversity.

"It's not just a city of gay men. It belongs to heterosexual people as well," he said.

But the flag's removal in a place synonymous with gay life outraged many, and the city this week changed course, raising above City Hall a flag with a rainbow-colored city logo...

240 Hate your attitude - still like you. No, you hate the attitude you've created in your mind. Pointing out the realities of the electoral situation based upon recent election history while also noting the policy failures of the party that's ostensibly on your side is not surrendering. It's called being realistic. Mischaracterizing differing opinion and relying purely upon optimism and hope is Democrat behavior. See how easy that game is?

243 When Mussolini sent soldiers to my grandfather's poverty-stricken village to confiscate the women's wedding bands, he decided it was time to emigrate to the USA. Quite the adventure. Today, some think that electing the candidates put forward by a corrupt party is going to help. I don't think that's going to work, and I base that 40 years of observation of the process.

He got the northern Virginia cellphone spectrum back in the early-mid 80's when the broadcast spectrum was allocated and not auctioned. Basically, he used his political connections (Chuck Robb) to get the license.

253 NC. We have an experienced conservative candidate, Thom Tillis, Speaker of the NC House, and the Tea Party people are upset because he has the support of Karl Rove.

It's not the Tea Party's fault (btw it's not an actual party) that your guy can't make his case.

255 We still have 8 months to talk about IMMIGRATION REFORM!. It must be talked about everyday by every Republican until we actually lose seats in the Senate.

Why are you stopping at the Senate? You are aiming too low, it must be talked about until the House is lost as well!

Posted by: NWConservative at March 07, 2014 10:59 AM (buZ/8)

257 The news roundup bit about increasing the size of the House is a smart bit though. The larger the population gets with the house being static means the less representation and personal contact possible for each citizen.

Obama has EO'ed Obamacare off the table as an election issue for the vast majority of voters, except for the 10 million or so enthusiastic new Medicaid enrollees. who will vote to not lose coverage.

And thus it shall continue.  Anything politically inconvenient gets delayed, concealed or unreported until after the election.

2014 - Republicans

Senate: Net +0
House: Republicans narrowly lose majority.

Posted by: Laurie David's Cervix at March 07, 2014 11:08 AM (kdS6q)

259 Does not matter. Dems win and they risk cycles for long term wins, that are gam changing deal breakers, like Obamacare. Reps win and they always argue over the next upcoming election and keeping their gains, instead of acting for conservatism.

The result is they do not do anything of true importance even WHEN they win, even when they have more than one house, etc.

It's always excuses and no decisive action.

They just keep the seat warm until Dems win again. Rinse wash repeat.

Dem rank and files get a return on their votes, we do not. Heck, the GOPe even now wants amnesty. The GOP, as they say, will betray you...

260 Sorry, but I think you are kidding yourselves about Montana.  The state is much more liberal that it's presidential votes indicate.  Just look at the Montana Supreme Court and some of their lunacy, and they keep getting reelected.  Additionally out of staters are flooding into eastern Montana in response to the Bakken oil fields and skewing the electorate.
