You'd think making a decision on the Keystone XL pipeline would be easy, especially when a new poll says there is overwhelming support for it. In fact, Keystone XL would only swell U.S. pipelines by 0.033 percent.
The first U.S. pipeline to transport oil started carrying crude from Coryville to Williamsport, Penn., in 1879. In the intervening 135 years, the continental USA became interlaced with 2,600,000 miles of these steel tubes. And how many more such miles would KXL add? A grand total of 852. ThatÂ’s an increase of 0.033 percent, or the rough equivalent of delivering an extra faucet to the plumbing department at your local Home Depot. Believe it or not, this microscopic change in AmericaÂ’s pipeline profile fuels this massive controversy.

Vaccine Denial
I know, it is a Mother Jones link but one could apply what the article say to how liberals think in regard to global warming, financial policies, politics, etc. No matter how hard you try, you can't change an anti-vaxxer's mind.
you might think it would be of the utmost importance to try to talk some sense into these people. But there's a problem: According to a major new study in the journal Pediatrics, trying to do so may actually make the problem worse. The paper tested the effectiveness of four separate pro-vaccine messages, three of which were based very closely on how the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) itself talks about vaccines. The results can only be called grim: Not a single one of the messages was successful when it came to increasing parents' professed intent to vaccinate their children. And in several cases the messages actually backfired, either increasing the ill-founded belief that vaccines cause autism or even, in one case, apparently reducing parents' intent to vaccinate.
Of note, the guy that did this study was the one that did one on "conservative" subjects and how they refused to believe a "truth" about George W. Bush and continued to believe the "lie". Did they not think to question liberals too?

Orgasm Machine
I'm sure Obamacare will cover this. Scientists build orgasm machine for women.
During the operation, a patient would remain conscious so that a surgeon could correctly pinpoint the right nerves to fit the electrodes in a patientÂ’s spinal cord. Then, a signal generator would be connected which would be most likely implanted under the skin of a patientÂ’s buttocks.Stuart Meloy, a surgeon at Piedmont Anesthesia and Pain Consultants in Winston-Salem, N.C., came up with idea by accident.
“I was placing the electrodes and suddenly the woman started exclaiming emphatically,” he said to Newscientist. “I asked her what was up and she said, ‘You’re going to have to teach my husband to do that’.”
So, um, where exactly was he placing these electrodes?

Lauren, if you look at Nitro-Pak and BePrepared, and watch for sales, you can stretch the dollars better. Start at FoodStorageAnalyzer.com and get an idea of what you have & maybe what you need. Also depends what you're planning for, freeze dried is very compact and light ... but is completely opposite of the 50-pound pail o' beans.

long shelf life
I think these are the processed ingredients that go into your basic boxed side dish you get at the grocery, those dried packets of stuff you mix together and bake.
The basic canned stuff you get at the big grocery go out of date so you have to use them up. Just get the stuff you would get anyway, but more of it.

Yeah...and I'm not too sure that it was just "luck".
There was a story a while back, about a guy who'd been doing business in Russia, back in the 90's...
He was told, by some people who were still pining for the good ole days of Communism...that they had "a young black man in America who will someday be your President. A man who thinks their way, who was raised to love communism."
So...who knows.

They are fine for actual mountain climbing, or "technical" backpacking, where you go for superlight everything and break the handles off plastic spoons to save weight. Long distance self-contained bicycle trips, ditto. After a week of reconstituted freeze-drieds, there will be a pronounced effect on the digestion.
For a 3-day backpack trip, you'll likely be making camp with actual cooking facilities of some kind, and want real food. If you're planning to shelter in place after a civil event, or base-camp out of a vehicle, you will be better served by canned food and conventional dried staples. I enjoy keeping dehydrator-dried fruits in sealed bags with the emergency foods, but that's more a taste thing.
I think you're all the way into Crazy Survivalist 201 before you begin making the critical choices of Stay or Go. They do not require the same equipment.

I have Linksys & think IÂ’m going to buy Cisco replacement. IT woman at work suggested Apple for $200 but I donÂ’t have huge network. ItÂ’s been fast enough up until about December. I have had issues since then.
I keep getting disconnected when I refresh page on my Mac.

I've got an EA4500, and I'd try something different if I were replacing it today. It looks good on paper, but to configure it, they make you use their cloud configurator instead of anything in RAM or local software.

Hiya, Trudy and welcome[/].
May Our Lord assuage you of your fears. May He allow Anna comfort and rest via her Husband's Heavenly calm. Might I pray for his individual buoyancy of Soul.
May God see, through His infinite wisdom, His way to that man's Soul. He is the holder of the key and Our Lord can offer him the kindest of shoulders to lean upon.
Should your Son-in-Law need something more than God's Love and our prayers, may he find comfort in All the Beauty around him. May his friends and family find him before he can reach "his bottom".
May the Prayers of these fine people reach you. May they find your Son-in-Law well and in good spirit.
I'll pray for him tonight, as I'll pray for you.
God loves us all. His Love of The Innocent is Strong. That little boy reserves a special place in our hearts tonight. Trudy- May our prayers be answered and may that small child find strength beyond strength. His fight is ours, now.
Our tears, our prayers, our wishes are with you and those you love.
-Thank You

I haven't ever heard anyone rave about the taste/quality of freeze-dried food.
It's really expensive too...so it's something that I haven't gotten into yet.
I keep a pretty good supply of canned goods and dry rice/beans/pasta, on hand...but rotating them out and keeping up with the expiration dates is a chore.
One thing I bought a few years ago, I am kinda happy about...is a stovetop distiller for water.
It was only $50.00 plus shipping.
You can use it on a grill, or a camp fire, too.
I figure that water quality will be a huge problem if the SHTF...and with a distiller, you can get rid of any of the pollutants.
Nothing survives the steam.

If you own a house, you don't have an excuse for not having 100 gallons of safe water stored, and bleach to clean more. If you check around, 30 and 50 gallon food-grade containers are available free. Don't buy them from a catalogue.
Everyone should have a day bag, whether you think of it as your bug-out bag or not, just to save time when you suddenly get a chance to go walking, or boating, or, you know, zombie hunting. And in that bag should be some local detail maps, a compass, sunglasses and sunscreen, a day's worth of compact food, a water bottle, a head covering, a first aid kit, a firestarter kit, a knife and matches, rope ("cordage," can be parachute cord) and visquene (a large plastic poncho, mylar sleeping bag, or other tenting material).
And you remember those items by telling yourself that Mom's Cafe Serves Extra Helpings of French Fries, Mustard, and Ketchup. And Rotten Vegetables.
Those things can easily fit (with practice) into a Euromilsurp "bread bag," usually about 6" x 6" x 9". They have an attached shoulder strap. Used to go for $5.
There, now you think I am a kook, but if you actually take that bag with you whenever you go adventuring, I have just saved your life.

A lot of cities here in OK are doing a rain barrel program.
They are recommending these guys, for the rain barrels:
http://www.upcycle-products.com/
They ship all over.
The barrels are heavy plastic, have a screen cover to keep out debris...and have a spigot at the bottom with a threaded opening, for connecting a hose.
Costs around $60 for a good sized one.

...unless you have a "bad bucket"; made of lead or a barrel contaminated with chemicals.
In that case? You'll need to filter it through cloth, fibers, charcoal and sand. In that order, I think?

As you know, Bic type lighters are unreliable with changes in altitude and outside pressure, so I always endorsed the Zippo, for several reasons. The famous naptha downside, of course, is that overfilling or sudden pressure change causes a chemical burn in the groin. So, you cover that in your discussion.
But not too long ago I spent several weeks at altitude in a pleasant summer, and found the evaporation rate from a trad Zippo to be double what I'm used to. So, what I do is, throw in a giveaway Bic in every damn firekit you've got. For a planned trip also take a Zippo and a small squirty can of Ronson fuel. And sealed up way down deep, "folded in waxed silk" as the old manuals said, still have some of those shellacked lifeboat matches. Yeah, I also wear a belt and suspenders.
You see "firestarter" and "matches" separate on that list because abut everyone is convinced you want a main and a spare source of ignition. I've also messed around with the magnesium-backed flint and steel, and carbide pellets. You?

I want to get as far away from large populations as I can, as quickly as I can. I can't make a stand in a cracker-box subdivision. What am I going to do, barricade myself in the basement with my 100 gallons of water, while the FSA comes for me? What happens when they start to rip up the floor?
Unless you fortify a neighborhood with other like minded people, staying in a populated area in a heavily gun-controlled zone is insane, to my thinking.
I think I like our odds better if I get 40-50 miles away within 48 hours. I may not have a year worth of freeze dried food, but I wouldn't have it if we stayed put, and we likely wouldn't be alive, either.

If you can follow a cookbook recipe, I would think you could do this. Just from the excerpt you need chemical reagents, and they will be equally difficult to get. (tools to make the tools, to make the tools you need to make the thing you want)

If you have a store of insulin, seal it in a watertight, but not insulated container, and submerge it in a creek.
Even in summer heat, most rapidly flowing creeks that are fed by shale springs are quite cold.

Majority of the urban centers will be gone within a week.
I would hunker down until that 48 hours passes.
Posted by: RWC at March 08, 2014 12:24 AM (MtC8f)
Cookie cutter subdivisions will rapidly become the harvest zone for the urban center refugees. I don't think there's any amount of firearms that will stop about a million hungry people from raiding subdivision after subdivision, and they aren't going to leave a family of 4 alone with their stuff.
I don't think I can bet on being overlooked, and I don't want to bet the lives of two young and pretty girls on it, either. Daddies have to protect their daughters.
If that scenario happens, I want my girls out of here. I am pretty damn sure I can get them out of here quickly if I need to, especially on foot. That's one of the benefits of growing up rural. I don't need any of the crap that most people here need.
The key, as always, is recognizing when to flip that switch, and making sure it is early enough that leaving becomes impossible.

If an eavestrough installer just looks at your house, he's going to lay out the fall pattern to get the water safely away from the house. If you're planning to hold that water instead, you may want to redesign which way it flows before dropping. Depending on the kind of eaves you have, that can be tricky.
The most important thing for firestarting is the stage right after the match. All wood will burn eventually, but especially when it's been wet (and your need for fire is most likely to be desperate), dry-looking kindling will just break your heart. I save the little cotton balls that come in the top of commercial medicines, dab them heavily in otherwise useless petroleum jelly, and seal them tight in a cheap plastic snap-closure bag. Then, in another small bag, I put a handful of dryer lint and wood shavings. Even in a driving rain, that stuff takes off like a torch. But you have to have your kindling and small wood ready--lots of it.

Most people think Facebook is being social, though. I think there is going to be a large group of predators in a very prey-rich environment. Not sure that hoping not to be first and that the predator gets a full belly is our best option. This city is basically set up like a supermarket for marauding.

There is no blanket answer (except, take blankets). Old dense urban areas will be hell on earth, of course. But cities are layered differently, some cookie-cutter suburbs are eminently more defensible than others, and just being "in the woods" doesn't guarantee you'll be safe.
Now, if you really do own some land far from the madding crowd, sure, a bunker there is a great idea, and a nice vacation spot too. I'm generally leery of suburbanites whose first plan is to ruck up and take the high ground. Usually the next order of business is "I don't need supplies. I can get your supplies." That's when I put on my hat, do one of those half-spins like backhoe does, and leave the bar.

Well we've seen how quickly Putin pounced on Ukraine...after their 'revolution'.
This is what worries me the most in the Let it Burn scenario.
I don't think that China and Russia would 'sit back and watch' while we got our country back together.
A worldwide disaster...now that is a different scenario.
Every country would be busy with their own survival.
But in a man-caused-economic-disaster here in the US...we would be vulnerable to foreign aggression.
There truly is nowhere else on the planet like our Breadbasket States.
Not really.
There are small areas, here and there, that have the same food production potential.
But nothing like the vast area we have here.
We pay farmers...to *not* grow crops fgs.
Otherwise we'd have surpluses that would crash the prices.
Our Midwestern states would be a prize for either Russia or China.

That's my problem in a nutshell. Staying is a frightening proposition - going seems less frightening. I have some basic skills I can use in a more rural area that I cannot use as effectively here.
But - I do not have a place to go. Strike 1. I do not have a cache to go to. Strike 2. I do not believe vehicle transportation is going to be possible. Strike 3. With some time, I may be able to overcome these, but not now.
Maybe the best approach is to prep for a month of hell, with bug out as the fall back. I don't know. Things will happen quickly and I see a scenario where anyone who doesn't get out early never will.

Every country would be busy with their own survival.
If the US goes down into chaos, everyone else does too. I am in Canada, and am under no illusion that we aren't chained to the Titanic up here.
Culturally, I might be able to count on a little more time to get out of dodge, but even that has changed a lot. 50% of Toronto was born outside of Canada, and the "multicultural is automatically good" naivete' has proven to be a ripe environment for those wanting to take advantage of it.
If the US fragments in a war of secession, and the US military fragments as well, then the UN definitely gets involved.

Disater planing comes down to the decision to Stay or Go! My personal Go points are #1 loss of water pressure or #2 security related. If your going, then you need a plan and a place to go. Very few of us can walk off into the wilderness and make it. Establishing that place - your own or a stable relative - in a safe area distinct from your own should be a priority.

If you're on city sewer lines...you may not have a choice of when you leave.
After a few days of not working, city sewers will be a backed up and full of disease.
That means...the toilets and sinks in your house are going to be belching out airborne diseases like cholera and dysentery.
So it's a good idea to have some sort of bug out plan.

I'm in Ontario, so thinking about Thunder Bay. Problem is, so will lots of others.
I wouldn't need to go far - 15 minutes in a car puts me in fairly wide farmland. 30 minutes away is quite rural. That's about 2 days of hard hiking until I am out where the FSA won't likely go. The issue is suburban refugees fleeing the FSA. Hipsters hoping farmers will take them in.
It would be best to know someone when I get there to help avoid that problem
But I don't.

I know several other inhaler-dependent people in the same boat.
The ludicrous thing is how tiny the amount of CFCs from inhalers was, relative to the size of the atmosphere.
This is among the side effects of an innumerate culture. The inability to gauge risk when risk comes down to numbers.
Of course, cynically enough, many of the interests involved in banning CFCs in inhalers knew quite well that even if the propellants were made from pure distilled interdimensional eldritch evil, they still would not add up to much damage on a planetary scale, but those interests backed banning CFCs in inhalers anyway.
Because money. Sometimes indirectly, but always because money.

I do always laugh when I see people with elaborate bug-out bags from which they intend to "live off the land" by hunting and fishing.
I had elderly relatives (all now passed) who told me about their experience of the Depression years in rural America. At the outset, everyone had the same damn brilliant idea. "The economy is destroyed, there are no jobs, there is no money, but we'll be OK. We can hunt for deer and fish for trout."
After five years? You couldn't find a deer or a trout to save your life, literally so. Cleaned the fuck out. People were competing for nasty stuff they would previously never have thought of eating, like the occasional possum.
It'll work the same way all over again. Except nowadays the ratio of would-be hunters to potential game is far worse than it was back then, thanks to mass immigration to America. So the available game to provide food for the table won't last five years. It might last two.
Fortunately I have large provisions of Long Pig Helper.

Sure....mostly. As in, they run for 500 yards based on gravity and then have a pumping station to raise them to the next 500-yard gravity flow. Think about this.....the sewer is underground between your house and the street. Somewhere near you is a sewage treatment plant that is pretty much on the surface. How many pump stations/gravity lines are between you and that plant? What happens when one pump station fails?

No
Only the highest elevations are purely gravity. In the flat lands gravity takes waste to pump stations that step in over high points between your house and it's final destination.

I suspect the true limiting factor would be skilled technical personnel.
Any societal survival strategy for such an event as national grid destruction would have to include identifying, prioritizing and protecting the handful of people with the specific smarts for large scale power engineering.
There are not a lot of those people. And if too many of them get wiped out by starving rampaging FSA members? The lights will stay off for a long, long time.

They don't stockpile transformers, and manufacturing them is a dirty business....so it'd take years to get back online if every feel-good regulation were adhered to. Sooner or later, however, we'd move to a "war footing" -- crank-the-bastiches-out and we'll clean up the mess later, and any asshole who wants to complain about coal-fed blast furnaces making the required iron can get fed into one -- and get 'em replaced much more quickly

To learn how to work a 3D printer? Of course, those things probably aren't cheap. Yet. I agree that the skills you learn would be valuable, but I suspect that the short supply of labor reflects anticipated demand. Posted by: model_1066 at March 08, 2014 02:44 AM (KWIwL) Hide posts from (KWIwL)
If you want to learn how to work a 3D printer, get one. They're only $300. I need to finish mine (I went on a tangent to stain it pretty colors).
And, BTW, I studied 3D printing at some length and subtractive processes are still superior to additive ones in (a) precision, (b) material choice, (c) cost, and (d) scalability.

Speaking of being directly underneath a nuke:
Back in the late 1950s to early 1960s, there was an era in which the American military were concerned about Soviet nuclear bomber attacks on the USA, and trying to come up with cost-effective ways to counter these.
Interceptor jets with conventional air to air missiles work, but the studies showed it would cost a mint to buy enough of them to get adequate coverage. But... if you were to put a nuclear warhead on the missile, it would take out multiple bombers at once! Kill an entire incoming formation in one shot. And avoid the need for precision terminal guidance. Costly at that time.
So the nuclear air to air missile was born. In several flavors.
And they actually tested one live -- which specific variant I cannot recall -- out at the Nevada proving grounds, and to demonstrate to the public not to freak out, a couple of Air Force officers stood at ground zero directly underneath the test shot. No special protection. Ordinary service uniforms.
They all lived.
But what a late-night barroom story! How could you ever beat that for bragging rights?
"There I was. Waiting for a nuke to go off right over my head."

You're close, but not completely on. You are saying that your greatest asset is looking at a situation that's a 4-out-of-10 and saying, "well, that's not so bad." But, really, your greatest asset is looking at that situation and going, "there's a 10% chance I can get it to an 8, a 20% chance I can get it to a 7, a 30% chance I can get it to a 6, a 20% chance I can get it to a 5, a 5% chance that I won't notice any improvement, and a 5% chance that I'll make it worse" -- and going for it. Pajama-boys-and-gals have no such horsesense. Things have always been 9s or 10s with them, and they have tantrums when things are even the least bit flawed.

I got myself one of these -- http://tinyurl.com/28s88pp -- for $400 [to get it at that price, you have to stalk it for a while in order to get the right combination of coupons and sale prices]. Seriously. It has its limitations, but it's outrageously cheap and contains the ability (with accessories and tooling) to build itself or larger devices. Mr. Wds gifted money to his daughter for her wedding this October. There were two stipulations.......they were not pregnant (she had been pregnant earlier and had sadly lost the baby) and that she had graduated from college(after 7 years, 5 paid for and 2 cosigned loans). She is again pregnant and we are thrilled to be grandparents. However, she still feels she has to have her "party".
What would you do? Posted by: westminsterdogshow at March 08, 2014 03:10 AM (kPX/m) Hide posts from (kPX/m)
Ooooh.....the tack I'd start mapping out (top of the head stuff) is that you can always have a party, but you get ONE chance to start a kid out right. And with indications the way they are, that money had best be reserved for getting the kid going. Feel free to cruise places like Zerohedge for appropriate mood music.

That is pretty much the way we feel too. The money can be better used for starting their family and not having financial stress. I'm assuming the money's been gifted already.
If you share life experience with them and they say you're being mean, tell 'em that you'd love for skittle-shitting unicorns to fly overhead but that your own life experiences were sometimes "mean" and you're trying to help them avoid the harm that you endured while you were figuring stuff out. In other words, deflect your concern back to the mean times rather than the mean info.....then you can suggest that those times may come again (though you wish they wouldn't).

What can you make with these things besides miniature engines? Posted by: Joe at March 08, 2014 03:55 AM (yVg8h) Hide posts from (yVg8h)
And, see -- that right there is the reason that more people should have one in their garage and have experience with it.
I don't mean to make you feel any sense of dishonor for such a meaningful question -- it's just that we all swim in a sea of machined products and, like fish in the ocean, don't even notice them most of the time.
You are correct in noting that with a small lathe and mill you can make miniature engines -- and many people do as a demonstration of their abilities. You can also make clocks, custom ipad covers, brackets, puzzles, prototypes, RF enclosures, legs, cogs, gears, cams, keys, jigs and tools. You can make brass cannons, AR lowers, bullet molds, and reloading jigs. In short, everything around you is either machined directly.....or is made using a tool that has been machined. Even the looms that wove the fabric of your t-shirt....were built of machined parts.

I wonder if I could make a forge hot enough to recycle my own aluminum.
3D scanners still need to come a little way. You could even scan broken rare car parts and stitch them together again, or make a mirror image part for one missing.
No doubt people with higher budgets are doing that as a business as we speak, and possibly people with junkyards or collections scanning and preparing to "print" rare parts for sale.
Heck you can even make tools, like a lot of those oddball special tools some manufacturers make for an oddball application, like 14" S-shaped torx drivers or cam gear locks or whatever. Posted by: Merovign, Dark Lord of the Sith at March 08, 2014 04:33 AM (qyfb5) Hide posts from (qyfb5)
Essentially, the problems with (base level) 3D printers are twofold -- first, the support network is tuned to making stable structures and not for hitting exact dimensions; second, the underlying printing is done by squirting, so it's like building a wall out of toothpaste. This doesn't mean that sintering versions or other nifty tech has these issues -- but basic PLA printing on a stage does.

Yesterday closed out a work week of the smallest number of ammo alerts so far.
Only one alert yesterday, (.08 per rd) and by the time I got to the vendors website, it was out of stock.
In a nutshell, nothing in .22lr available and in stock for less then .14 a round using five different ammo shopping bots, tracking over 35 different vendors.
9mm seems to again be inching upward in price for bulk purchase, and availability seems to be tightening.
.223 seems to be holding fairly steady, with the low end price point for brass case sometimes dipping around .33 per round.
