Sunday (Open) Politics Thread: Primary Edition [Y-not]
— Open Blogger

Here's an open thread to talk about politics.

To get you started, the Great Minds in my state of Utah have been screwing around trying to come up with a primary system that we can all agree on. They seem to have failed and instead have come up with something that no one will like.

Under the new framework for SB54, political parties would be able to keep their existing caucus system — where delegates chosen at neighborhood caucuses generally choose nominees at the party conventions — but would also have been required to accept an alternative path to the primary ballot.

That alternative would entail allowing a candidate who gathers enough signatures to appear on the primary ballot. A statewide candidate would need to gather 28,000; a candidate for one of the four congressional districts would need one-fourth that number; a state Senate candidate would need to collect 2,000 signatures; and a House candidate would need 1,000.

The signatures could come from any registered voters.

The parties would also have to allow unaffiliated voters to vote in their primaries and allow absentee voting for delegates at the party convention, according to sources familiar with the negotiated bill.

**Meant to provide a link to the full article here.

Awesome.

I know some people like caucuses, but I think they're insane. Moreover, this compromise measure appears to result in open primaries.

Double awesome.

Open thread.

2 You want to trade Utah's system for Illinois? Heck with it. No trade needed, you can have it for free.

7 As far as I can tell, the open primary makes no sense if you had a party that was interested in being an opposition party.

9 7 As far as I can tell, the open primary makes no sense if you had a party that was interested in being an opposition party. --- The only thing I can think of is that the GOP in Utah got pressure from our other party - the Libertarians - to make them open. There are issues with participation. Perhaps the younger libertarians are not willing to register as GOP but the GOP wants their input... ? I dunno.

18 I don't like open primaries. With closed primaries, Republican voters have the incentive to vote for the best R in the primary, and Democrat voters will vote for the best D. Open primaries allow for mischief. Republican voters could vote for the weakest D with an eye toward the general election, and vice versa. If enough voters do that, you could end up with both parties having substandard candidates in the general election. Sort of a "race to the bottom".

22 Caucuses are crap.  They allow one group with a lot of free people to railroad them.  That's how Laup 'Nor wins Iowa.

The bets system would be a regular primary with a runoff for the top two candidates.  As for cross voting, if your State doesn't allow a closed primary then do what my State does, you can vote in one or the other but not both. And once you vote in one that is the one you are stuck with if a run-off occurs.

That doesn't prevent mischief by a Party crossing over if they have no primary due to an incumbent but it limits it for other times.

23 This is the kind of politics that makes my head hurt. This is why I never consider running for office. That and I expect if I did win the whole system would inevitably corrupt me.

31 How weird. In my state, anyone can file for any race, any party.  The parties don't recruit all the candidates.  It's more like people recruit themselves, because who wants to do through all that shit?   It's a real hassle & it's hard to talk anyone sane into doing it.

33 33 How weird. In my state, anyone can file for any race, any party. The parties don't recruit all the candidates. --- Do you have two viable parties or one? I think that in states where a single party dominates, you get more party control/involvement in the candidate selection process. At least, that was my impression in Maryland and Utah.

Posted by: Y-not at March 02, 2014 05:33 AM (zDsvJ)

34 Getting on the ballot for president is something else though.  When you have caucuses the Paulbots try to take over, and then snivel for years after when they fail.

36 It's officially the first day of spring in my world. Put away Goldwind's winter blankets, let him out to visit the pony this morning, filled both troughs, yup, the winter regimen at the barn has been stowed for hopefully 8-9 months, we're on the summer system now. Of course I made this decision unilaterally this morning, so if it gets cold again I'm the idiot, but I'm betting on the side that gets the horse more outdoors time, he's getting old, should enjoy every day he can.

49 We used to do exercises near the Czech border. One time our tent was situated such that we could see the few strands of wire that made up the "frontier border". That same exercise was when I saw a full-on real life Gypsy caravan and encampments. Must've been hundreds of them, headed into Germany.

50 There used to be PA Air National Guard A-10s that would regularly fly over my neighborhood. This might even be an actual photo of them: http://tinyurl.com/kjzqvhp Luckily for me, they were just training flights. They weren't mad at me or anything. Once I went to an air show and one of them was on static display. It had the little bullet hole decals you can buy for your car. Sadly, the base is closed now. I miss them.

58 Does anybody know if Ukraine, in general, supported the election of President Low-T? I know that most of Europe was enthralled as he ascended to his throne, but there were exceptions. Most Poles, for example, opposed him. Lech Walesa didn't like him. How about Ukraine? Also, see how the once great European powers kneel like vassals before the bear. Ukrainian "rebels" want to align with the EU. And what does the EU do to help them? Complete silence. Here, liberals, are your heroes. Total and complete pussies.
