Prager University: The Bigger the Government, the Smaller the Citizen

As Jonah Goldberg has pointed out unlike your family, friends, or neighbors the government cannot love you. Nor can the government love other people on your behalf. That's one reason why de Tocqueville believed that America's 'mediating institutions' based on voluntary, personal interactions were so critical to its success.

But the left only believes in and trusts government:

In the view of the left, there are only two entities that matter: the individual, and the state.

...This desiccated vision of society is in direct contrast to what Alexis de Tocqueville observed as being the genius of the American experiment. He celebrated the countless ways in which Americans interacted with and influenced the public square through what later came to be called "mediating institutions"-churches, civic societies, fraternal organizations, and innumerable other voluntary associations that served not only their members, but their communities as well. These institutions, he said, were the backbone of American life, and the primary bulwark against the kind of tyranny that had long dominated Europe.

When the left views American society, it simply doesn't see these institutions, or worse, dismisses them as reactionary and obstructive of "progress." They are viewed purely as expressions of private interests, needs, or desires, and at best of no consequence to the real work of improving the country, and at worst positive hindrances to be caged or, if need be, destroyed.

And this story from MN where a soaking wet high school girl in a bathing suit was forced to stand outside barefoot in sub-freezing weather by teachers during a fire alarm is a classic example of how big government and its rules end up robbing average people of their basic human decency and making them behave like monsters. The girl is okay thanks to the help of her classmates but suffered some frostbite to her feet.

Quote of the Day

"My father had taught me to be nice first, because you can always be mean later, but once you've been mean to someone, they won't believe the nice anymore. So be nice, be nice, until it's time to stop being nice, then destroy them."

But as my mother also taught me when you're a teacher - or really anyone in a position of authority - you always start out super-strict, demanding and merciless and then slowly loosen up once the ground rules have been established. Of course both of these pieces of advice are correct in their own circumstances.

Pro-Tip: Always Be Sure To Attack Switzerland After Office Hours

However, today it was revealed that it was Italian and French pilots who were scrambled to escort the plane into land and the Swiss played no part in the mission.

The Swiss pilots were alerted to the problem at 4.30am but are only operational in normal office hours - not before 8am.

A Swiss airforce spokesman Laurent Savary told AFP: 'Switzerland cannot intervene because its airbases are closed at night and on the weekend. It's a question of budget and staffing.'

Scenes From a Militarized Police America

Just remember that this entire military-style raid was to question someone suspected of credit card fraud. And no I wouldn't consider this a 'knock and announce' entry where a reasonable person could make it to the door to meet the police.

As you can see from the video, the knock and announce today is largely a formality. The original purpose is gone. From the perspective of the people inside, there's really no difference between this sort of "knock and announce" and a no-knock raid. (The covering of the officers' faces is also troubling, though also not uncommon.)

...Ross says he didn't hear the police announcement until after one officer had already attempted to kick in the door. Had that officer been successful, there's a good chance that Ross, the police officer, or both would be dead. The police department would then have inevitably argued that Ross should have known that they were law enforcement. But you can't simultaneously argue that these violent, volatile tactics are necessary to take suspects by surprise and that the same suspects you're taking by surprise should have known all along that they were being raided by police. Well you can, and police do, and judges and prosecutors usually support them. But the arguments don't logically coexist.

Look the police can either have 'knock and announce' raids with reasonable time before entry or they can have 'surprise' raids - but not both. And if they go with surprise, I'm willing to acquit anyone who acts against them in reasonable self-defense.

How To Tell The Terrorists Have Won

Members of the military are no longer allowed to march along with the Boston Marathon. Because safety.

Muslims bomb the Boston Marathon and Boston, home to the American Revolution, does what the Left does best: it backs down. That's the word from Runner's world:
A decade long tradition will be missing from this year's Boston Marathon. Due to the new, stricter security guidelines released by the Boston Athletic Association last Wednesday, ruck marchers will not be allowed to make the 26.2-mile trek from Hopkinton to Boylston because they are considered "unauthorized participants."

Active members of the military have participated in ruck marches at the Boston Marathon for years. Donning full fatigues and carrying 40-pound rucksacks on their backs, ruckers march the length of the course in support of families of fallen soldiers.
Muslims don't have to defeat America on the battlefield. If they scare us enough, we'll unilaterally declare defeat and turn ourselves over to the enemy.

Whatever Happened to...Celebrities Ageing Naturally?

There was a time when actors and actresses let themselves age naturally, and looked all the more better for it. Katharine Hepburn, as far as I could tell, never had work done and her pretty features are still intact in On Golden Pond, which was released when she was 74. Mae West also resisted plastic surgery, showing off her face and neck to whoever asked to prove she had no surgical marks. Instead, she shunned the sun, staying indoors during the midday hours and drawing the shades in her apartment. Eva Saint Marie is 89 and was interviewed on CBS Sunday Morning this week, claiming that she never had anything done to her face--and I believe her. She still looks stunning and completely natural.

Based on women I've known who have gotten plastic surgery you seem to get the best results when you have light work done that mostly restores what you used to look like. But go too far and you start getting the allergic reaction/tranny-burn victim look.

Not sure I agree with that. "Government" is an abstract, nebulous thing.
I would accept that the left believes in and trusts the cult of dear leader. If you look around, you see the left fixated on the strong man at the top, not the abstract 'government'.

68 "But you can't simultaneously argue that these violent, volatile tactics are necessary to take suspects by surprise and that the same suspects you're taking by surprise should have known all along that they were being raided by police."

Beautifully reasoned.

By the way, Radley Balko has an entire book, _Rise Of The Warrior Cop_, filled with accounts of over the top law enforcement abuses of precisely this sort, which will surely fulfill your Recommended Daily Allowance of ragestroke.

It includes a section on one of my personal pet peeves, how podunk PDs in little towns with next to zero crime rates are getting kitted out with massive armored vehicles paid for by the feds. Barney Fife, meet Warren Terruh.

As we all know, when jihadis are plotting, and carefully marking on a map the spots they wish to stab in America's soft underbelly, they're focusing like a laser on tiny lily-white towns in rural New Hampshire where the typical police call involves high schoolers egging and TP-ing one another's houses.

So that twenty ton MRAP with the tactical assault team in black ninja suits and body armor better be ready to roll on a moment's notice. You can't be too careful.

Yep, and that quote especially applies to Uninvited Police requesting entry to my abode by means of kicking down my door.

Fcuk 'em, I'm installing some more blind deadbolts, anchored with 8" anchors.  Doors are gonna have deadbolts like a gunsafe.

119 California Democrats Protect Their Felonious Own California Democrats currently have super majorities (over 2/3 in each house), and hold that super-majority in the state Senate by two seats. Democratic state Senator Ron Calderon was indicted for allegedly taking $100,000 in bribes. His seat is likely safe for Democrats, but would temporarily lower their numbers in the State Senate, though keep it above the threshold for a supermajority. This is why the state Senate President Steinberg has called on Calderon to resign or “take a leave of absence“. More: http://politicalhat.com/?p=5189

121 "Yep, hopefully we can look to the Sheriffs for support on our side. I know that I can, being no police in my county."

Here in urban northern Commiefornia, there is a growing trend of small cities with low crime rates realizing that police are a huge monkey on the backs of municipal budgeting, since they are also patrolled by the county sheriff. And cops are enormously costly when you consider pension outlays.

And, here in the SF Bay Area, some of those small cities have said, "Screw it," and dumped their municipal PD, and contracted with the sheriff to take over the former police facilities and expand local patrols. Note that this is in the supposed heartland of deep blue liberalism. Even here, voters notice dollar signs.

Someone asked me what I thought about this trend, and I said, "Well, I live in a place that's double-covered for law enforcement. I get to vote for who the sheriff is, but I don't get to vote for who the police chief is. I figure I prefer having some direct accountability in that matter."

Also, the sheriff's office doesn't impose a standard sidearm on the deputies, and some of them carry some freaking cool shootin' irons. That they are happy to chat about if you ask politely.

She was instead referring to the fact that in order to properly research a community during a given historical era, you need the details about what the ordinary women of the community were doing. And those women (the "well-behaved women") are often the most difficult people to learn about.

Strategically, it makes sense.  If CPAC were only to include the so-called "true conservatives" as defined by the ACU, the conference's ability to influence would be decreased as it would be easier to malign it as a gathering of those outside the mainstream.  Including traditional republicans (if Christie counts as such, which he does, unfortunately) lengthens and broadens the perceived reach of CPAC.  The ACU can't afford to marginalize itself by not including "moderate" voices if they want to have any sway after elections if a RINO-type candidate wins.

206 I've been thinking about that whole "Republicans are the party of the rich, while Democrats are the party of the poor" stereotype, and it just occurred to me how that can be used positively from a Republican standpoint.

It's true that wealthy people are more likely to vote Republican, while poor people are more likely to vote Democrat. And politicians, on the whole, are selfish creatures who want to maximize their own power and that of their  party, right?

So, Republicans support policies that enable more people to get rich, because more wealthy people = more Republican voters.

Democrats, on the other hand, support policies that make more people poor, because more poor people = more Democrat voters.

Will you vote for the party that wants you to be poor, or the party that wants you to be rich?

I've always argued against that rich/poor dichotomy, thinking it was too simplistic, but now I'm thinking maybe it'd be better to embrace it after all. It might be easier to explain to people that they have the cause and effect backwards than to refute that particular bumper-sticker slogan.

Probably would have. Hilarious hijinx ensue.

Get news from Fox streaming, weather from Weather Underground.  Cable vendors are freaking out and consolidating (Comcast is buying TWC). 284 The Roku is basically a set-top box with a WiFi antenna instead of a cable connector. It's idiot proof. (Also has a gigabit RJ45 port in 3rd gen), with HDMI output. They have about 1000 channels, which are basically either streaming HTML5/Flash sites or have direct agreements with Roku for native mode. Also like 300 music channels.  Cost is $99, no monthly fee. That's it. Has microSD and USB for recording anything.  Channel list is at their website and just about every major streaming site you can imagine is listed.

Posted by: Lot at March 06, 2014 I have seen those. I have a friend who works in the industry and he is forever pointing them out to me. It is funny how hardly anyone realizes how many pipelines are in the country.

I hate to correct you, but that was an accent that was brought about by Arnold Schwarzenegger speaking Austrian in his youth, not German.  I know you said Germanic in nature, which is technically correct, but in the interests of cultural sensitivity, specificity is very important.

That's the concept. Lots of bargain basement stuff you'll surf through in a month or so. However, an additional $8 a month gets you Netflix online stuff, and $100? per year gets you Amazon series that covers a lot of the premium cable series.

Yeah in a generation or two it will sound totally bizarre that most Americans had to have a special cable run to their house just for video and then a completely separate cable just for talking on a dedicated phone device. Just like it sounds odd and quaint to us that some people back in the 1910s had special telegraph lines run to their houses just for the latest stock quotes.

Also, my big angelfish is dying. He's about the size of my hand and he's lying on the bottom of the tank. Nothing I can do. Angelfish are the reason I like to have a fish tank, and now I'll have none. They're hard to get started and I hate it when they die. I doesn't help that Gingy thinks it's great fun to tease me when I'm upset when one dies. Maybe I'll just give away the other fish and stop keeping a tank. I dunno. 407 #391: Thanks for the tip, RS! Maybe I'll look into that later; it's getting a little late to think about signing up for any new service tonight.

As it stands right now, I seem to have the option of adding individual channels to my internet subscription. If that's the case, it might be better to go that route. If I can indeed get the equivalent of a la carte cable through my computer, that'd be sort of cool. That's also something to look into later.

I seem to have access to at least most shows on a good number of cable channels included in my basic internet service. I'll have to take a closer look and see what all I have.

Knowing diddly-squat about keeping fish, I went to the fish store (I don't call them pets), and said gimme something cheap and hard to kill. So I go home with these nifty little schooling fish called Tiger Barbs, and one algae hoovering plecostamus. The Tiger Barbs ate their own dead, and murdered the bottom feeder after it learned to swim upside down and hoover the floating food from the surface. All that was left were a few scales in the filter. Posted by: model_1066 at March 07, 2014 12:32 AM (KWIwL) Hide posts from (KWIwL)

Well, the good news is that you started the right way -- 55 gallon tanks are a helluva lot easier than 10 gallon tanks. Fish like stable environments, and having 5x the water means that anything you do to vary the environment takes 5x as long.

No, those are the general rules. The special rules are that you have to cram the tank full and filter it like it's a much bigger tank. If there's only a few fish in the tank, they'll kill each other -- there have to be so many that if one fish takes off after another to murder the bum, he'll encounter another worthy victim before he gets there.

Some like a high population density -- mbuna are an example. They're rock fish, so in the lake they'd have 30 feet of open water above a pile of boulders, and the mbuna would all be within one foot of the boulders. Barbs are open water swimmers and it's actually more difficult to defuse aggression with them -- typically, you need plantings that they can't see through.

The cable bill - already onerous as we hardly watch 3 hours a week, seriously - has just gone up by 10%.  Main option I'm looking at, when we get a new TV (will be a current "Smart" one) - streaming everything I need from the WiFi (router is one allegedly optimized for video streaming).

So this raises (not begs! just to contribute to the proper English theme here tonight) the question:  just what can I get (free) via streaming from my internet connection?  News (well I haven't watched 20 min. of TV "news" in 5 years, but if Martians land or something, I might be tempted), sports (again very little will suffice, though I'd probably need NFL access for a few game-watching events), Food TV, AMC?   I gather I can buy access via Netflix or Amazon to various kinds of movie content.  Do not watch any ongoing series (shocking, but true - I only know their titles through y'all's comments here).

Anyway, the cable cost is ridiculous.  I'm going to be going without any health insurance starting in June, and I'm in a budget-scrubbing mood.

He's overstating the case, but the great majority of fish in Lake Victoria, Lake Tanganyika, and Lake Malawi are cichlids -- they're known as the rift lakes of Africa.

On the flip side, Lake Tanganyika (which Richard Francis Burton described as "a vast inland sea, oddly devoid of fish" [they tend to be sneaky]) also boasts freshwater eels, as well as jellyfish, sponges, pufferfish, and crabs. For more conventional fish, it has catfish, killifish and assorted others.

There was one story I remember that a guy who had been a missionary once told.....it seems that he was out in the backcountry about to have dinner with some locals, and felt the need to make some space available by doing a #2....so he follows this rickety boardwalk out to the designated spot which hung out over a local waterway. As he was doing his business, he was amused to note that there were some large, striped fish taking an interest in each splash....but was notably less amused when he finished, cleaned himself off, and walked back into the family kitchen to note a large, striped fish on his plate.

Thanks for the info, folks.  Dammit, the irony.  I'll probably be forced to keep cable just for 2 or 3 damn NFL games that I'll need to host, after being only a guest for years at others' houses.  Other than that, I figure I could cut the (TV part) cable.  I think it's over $80/mo. now, for the "basic" package.  Which is barely used.  So let's see, add nearly $40/mo. for the copper telephone wire I keep for the house alarm and earthquake contingency (wire network is pretty tough and self-powered and should operate even after The Big One), and we're throwing away $120/mo.

Of course, it'd be easy for me to throw away my job by doing what's only right, since I own nothing of any real value and dating is just something I think would be nice in theory. A married teacher struggling to make payments on a house and a nice car might see it differently.

Both of the Rift Lakes (Malawi and Tanganyika) have highly unusual water conditions. You need to buy lake-specific buffers and salts to treat your water during water changes to keep the pH high and provide the minerals that the fish are used to. For mbuna (algae eaters in nature), their food also needs to be very high in algae/vegetable content or they will bloat and die.

Also, lots of filtration is not enough. You also need to plan for frequent water changes, say 30% per week (or better, twice per week). Filtration will convert ammonia to nitrates and nitrates to nitrites, but the buildup of nitrites and other organic pollutants can only be removed with water changes. The high population density required for a colony of mbuna (or their Tanganyikan analogs, the genus Tropheus) creates toxic levels of these byproducts in a very short period of time, and the fish react very poorly to that kind of environmental degradation.

Whoa, there!

Unless you're importing from the lakes, anything locally-bred will probably be far-less picky than what you're talking about (although I know some odd counterexamples -- Trets will dig in a way that assumes alkaline cementation....so they'll eventually end up dead under a rock if you don't have that). I generally use 1/4 coral sand in my substrate and occasionally add a little epsom salt when I'm feeling particularly helpful -- and the fact that I have no salt burns on my lawn when I dump water changes there lets you know how much I'm doing.

To be truthful, I was probably doing 1/4 tank water changes 2x per month when I kept mbuna....which may be on the low side. But 30% 2x/week?!?!? Part of the problem is that municipal water supplies aren't all that safe or steady, and if you get a chlorine spike in a 30% water change it can be a big, nasty deal.

Further, mbuna are far more hardy than tropheus. They're more opportunistic feeders and -- though simulated aufwuchs is fine and all -- they'll live on straight flake. And they hardly ever bloat.

Now, you will note upthread that I had nice things to say about severums....and there are a ton of nice Central/South American cichlids if you have a large tank and soft water. But mbuna are not shrinking violets by any means.

*triggerfish, in the wild, chew coral into sand so they can eat the little polyps that make it. Let me run that again -- they bite off pieces of stone-hard coral and chew it until it's nothing but sand. Translation: regard the front end of a triggerfish like an operating power tool.

514 PW, for redeye, try this u tube channel http://tinyurl.com/m9n28j9 AG, that flat tax postcard idea has been around for a long time - 80's even ... I should break out this Google Chromecast widget my old man got me for xmas - haven't tried it yet. Plain old rabbit ears give me a great signal, there is no such thing as a digital or HD antenna. YMMV depending on the quality of the signal you receive - boosted ones can help. I cut cable and have DSL and landline (for work) - it's just as bad, wish we had uverse or fios, but we are in centurylink hell here. At least I get a better TV signal in sight of Lookout Mt. then I used to get in A-town

If it seems wrong or strange, YELL, SCREAM, Throw a fit!  Do not go quietly.  This applies to everyone.  If he tells you to get in the van, don't!!!  Run away, scream, fight, make him try to kill you there.  Even if he succeeds in killing you (which he will not), it will be quick and your family will have the body.  BAD Things happen at secondary locations.

And T-9, I thank Him I never had to go there.  But wait six months.  Wear a mask.  Use a phony accent.  Walk away briskly, take off the mask, overshirt and when you are home, burn all the clothes, and shoes in the BBQ.  Deny everything.

559 Time for the Friday ammo report.

The scarceness of 22lr at a decent price continued through yesterday.
A single alert for .06 per round was received all day.
And it was sold out in the two minutes it took to navigate to the dealers site.

Right now, availability starts at around .14 per round, with nothing lower priced in stock throughout the land.

On the plus side, Mrs VIA is off today, and it's time to take her new Fluffy for its inaugural trip to the range..

567 But as my mother also taught me when you're a teacher - or really anyone in a position of authority - you always start out super-strict, demanding and merciless and then slowly loosen up once the ground rules have been established. Of course both of these pieces of advice are correct in their own circumstances.

You say that as if it contradicts the foregoing advice to be nice.

this is a problem with a lot of people.  They think being strict - adhering to rules and being demanding - is being mean.  That is not necessarily so.  You can be strict and demanding without being mean.  And, just because someone is strict and demanding doesn't mean they are being mean to you.

It is possible to apply the rules in such a way as to be mean (such as making a wet girl in a bathing suit stand outside in freezing weather for a fire drill), but just applying the rules and expecting people to put forth their best effort is not in and of itself "mean".

the reason to start strict with rules and then loosen up is that people always push the boundaries of rules and conduct.  If you start loose, then the bar for conduct that is considered acceptable is set very low and will only deteriorate from there.  And it is hard to then achieve credibility for enforcing the rules and demanding better conduct. But starting strict isn't being mean.

I have used the following phrase for years.

"Rules are for the guidance of wise men, and the obeyence (sp) of fools."

This is why we have things like "zero tolerance" policies, where school districts will punish a kid for making a finger gun or drawing a picture of a gun.

the combination of litigiousness with stupidity results in dumb rules, strictly obeyed by dumb people.

In a very real way, Loki in the Avengers movie, was correct.  Most people want to be told what to do and not have to make any decisions.  Thus, a school superintendent or principal is perfectly happy with blindly applying a silly rule in a silly fashion rather than making a common-sense decision on a case-by-case basis.

570 507 Trout are good eating, but the BEST eating fish are Walleyes! Posted by: alamogordo at March 07, 2014 02:11 AM (HUTO5) Waking up to finish this thread. Alamogordo, I loves me some walleye, but I have to suggest that the best eating fish is Halibut. Tender, flaky and oh so yummy. And if you go fishing for halibut, the keepers are in the 40-60 pound range. Friend of mine caught one that was 270 pounds. Said it was like reeling in a tractor tire. Shot it a couple times with a .270 before getting it in the boat.

572 Quote of the Day "My father had taught me to be nice first, because you can always be mean later, but once you've been mean to someone, they won't believe the nice anymore. So be nice, be nice, until it's time to stop being nice, then destroy them." Laura K Hamilton, from her "fae" softcore porn series; which followed her softcore porn Vampire series. Um, or so I hear from other people? Yeah, nobody is buying that. I didn't say they were bad books, just that they'd be classified as softcore (or maybe not quite that soft) porn. But when friends ask to buy books and want a "vampire" book; I ask what kind. "Classical, dramatic, horror, romantic, or softcore porn" I think are the categories I'm familiar with. I have 800+ books in the scifi/fantasy genre; I generally have a book or two you'd appreciate... if you'll tell me what kinds of books you like.
