Whoops! One of the Critical Race Theory Elect goes down. [KT]
— Open Blogger

Praying Hands, Albrecht Dürer, 1508

John McWhorter has been serializing a book he is writing on Critical Race Theory, or as he puts it, "Third Wave Antiracism".   He may be somewhat too negative about the place of religion in public life, but he has correctly pegged "Third Wave Antiracism" as a religion whose adherents are attempting to force its takeover of public (and private) life.
"Third Wave Antiracist tenets, stated clearly and placed in simple oppositions, translate into nothing whatsoever. . .

The revelation of racism is, itself and alone, the point, the intention, of this curriculum. As such, the fact that if you think a little, the tenets cancel one another out, is considered trivial. That they serve their true purpose of revealing people as bigots is paramount—sacrosanct, as it were. . .

I write this viscerally driven by the fact that all of this supposed wisdom is founded in an ideology under which white people calling themselves our saviors make black people look like the dumbest, weakest, most self-indulgent human beings in the history of our species, and teach black people to revel in that status and cherish it as making us special. Talking of Antiracist Baby, I am especially dismayed at the idea of this indoctrination infecting my daughters’ sense of self. I can’t always be with them, and this anti-humanist ideology may seep into their school curriculum. I shudder at the thought: teachers with eyes shining at the prospect of showing their antiracism by teaching my daughters that they are poster children rather than individuals.
He recognizes that the True Believers are not susceptible to reason:
My interest is not "How do we get through to these people?” We cannot, at least not enough of them to matter. The question is "How can we can live graciously among them?” We seek change in the world, but for the duration will have to do so while encountering bearers of a gospel, itching to smoke out heretics, and ready on a moment’s notice to tar us as moral perverts.
Well, one way is to make sure they don't have power over you or your kids.  One of them has just lost some of that power.  More on that a little later.  But here's another idea:

One more thing: We need a crisper label for the problematic folk. . .

The author and essayist Joseph Bottum has found the proper term, and I will adopt it here: We will term these people The Elect. They do think of themselves as bearers of a wisdom, granted them for any number of reasons—a gift for empathy, life experience, maybe even intelligence. But they see themselves as having been chosen, as it were, by one or some of these factors, as understanding something most do not.

"The Elect” is also good in implying a certain smugness, which is sadly accurate as a depiction. Of course, most of them will resist the charge. But its sitting in the air, in its irony, may also encourage them to resist the definition, which over time may condition at least some of them to temper the excesses of the philosophy, just as after the 1980s many started disidentifying from being "too PC.”

But most importantly, terming these people The Elect implies a certain air of the past, à la Da Vinci Code. This is apt, in that the view they think of as sacrosanct is directly equivalent to views people centuries before us were as fervently devoted to as today’s Elect are. The medieval Catholic passionately defended prosecuting Jews and Muslims with what we now see was bigoted incoherence, rooted in the notion that those with other beliefs and origins were lesser humans. We spontaneously "other” those antique inquisitors in our times, but right here and now we are faced with people who harbor the exact same brand of mission, just against different persons. . .

Well, that label is not going to set well with certain folks. Do you like it?

One of the CRT Elect Goes Down

link

Johnston did a couple of damning blog posts on Dalton back in December, attracting the attention of Roger Kimball and Ed Driscoll, and even others.  Faculty demands were breathtakingly woke.   In March, Bari Weiss interviewed terrified parents at a number of prep schools.   Terrified of CRT.  But they should really be terrified that the prep schools are pushing CRT because that's what the Ivy League wants.

Then Caitlin Flanagan took on the whole prep school edifice.  Including the parents.  For reasons that go beyond CRT.
Dalton is one of the most selective private schools in Manhattan, in part because it knows the answer to an important question: What do hedge-funders want?

They want what no one else has. At Dalton, that means an "archaeologist in residence,” a teaching kitchen, a rooftop greenhouse, and a theater proscenium lovingly restored after it was "destroyed by a previous renovation.”

Were online classes a mistake?  Heh.

Victor Davis Hanson may have a partial explanation for the extreme behavior of some of those parents and prep school faculty in Can the Great Awokening Succeed?   After summarizing several perils of The Great Awokening, VDH ends with this:

Wokeness is either unaware of, or unconcerned with, the seething religious, caste, and racial tensions that plague India, or wrecked Lebanon, or unwound Yugoslavia. That is, the woke believe their Byzantine books of race-based exceptions, exemptions, and absolutions will convince 330 million Americans that segregation, or official untruth, are permitted, given historical circumstances and the common good.
But they will not.

Finally, wokeness takes for granted that its elite white Dr. Frankenstein architects will always control the prejudicial woke monster they created—on the assumption that one will never devour its creators. But history suggests ideologies often do just that.

He gives several examples of The Elect seeming to believe that they will remain immune to the changes they are imposing on society, particularly by imposing low quotas for whites in jobs, etc.

. . . They did not sign up for a 30-40 percent white allotment that cuts into the white woke; that is, the good and the morally superior whites.

So this, too, will be another of wokeism’s greatest tests, when elite writers, professors, actors, lawyers, newsroom grandees, and CEO magnificoes learn that they, too, can be of the wrong color under the new tribal prejudice they fostered.

Wokeism is creating a future group of politically incorrect Trotskyites on a proverbial rendezvous with a Mexican ice ax, given that by birth they will never be woke enough for the new Stalinism.

Do you think Jim Best at Dalton is a scapegoat, or is there change in the air?

Other prep school developments:

This week, Bari Weiss published an  essay from a teacher, Paul Rossi at another of these exclusive schools:

I am a teacher at Grace Church High School in Manhattan.Ten years ago, I changed careers when I discovered how rewarding it is to help young people explore the truth and beauty of mathematics. I love my work . .

My school, like so many others, induces students via shame and sophistry to identify primarily with their race before their individual identities are fully formed. . .

All of this is done in the name of "equity,” but it is the opposite of fair. In reality, all of this reinforces the worst impulses we have as human beings: our tendency toward tribalism and sectarianism that a truly liberal education is meant to transcend. . .
The entire essay is remarkable.  And disturbing.

I was planning to publish a roundup today of the many thoughtful responses to Paul Rossi's essay.  I’m going to save that post for Sunday, because I was just sent this letter that has my jaw on the floor. It was written by a Brearley parent named Andrew Gutmann.

If you don’t know about Brearley, it’s a private all-girls school on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. It costs $54,000 a year and prospective families apparently have to take an "anti-racism pledge” to be considered for admission. (In the course of my reporting for this piece I spoke to a few Brearley parents.)

Gutmann chose to pull his daughter, who has been in the school since kindergarten, and sent this missive to all 600 or so families in the school earlier this week. Among the lines:

If Brearley’s administration was truly concerned about so-called "equity,” it would be discussing the cessation of admissions preferences for legacies, siblings, and those families with especially deep pockets. If the administration was genuinely serious about "diversity,” it would not insist on the indoctrination of its students, and their families, to a single mindset, most reminiscent of the Chinese Cultural Revolution.

I’m pasting the whole thing below.

This father expresses himself very well.  I recommend reading the letter.

Will the prep schools change?  If they change, what will happen in "normal" schools?

... claiming that Santa Clara County and the public school system "occupy the unceded territory of the Muwekma Ohlone Nation, the sovereign nation and original people of the skies, land, and waters." The premise of this ritual, which has become common in progressive organizations, is that the American government, founded by white settlers, is an illegitimate colonial power that should return the land to the Native American tribes.

As a recognized legal counsel for the True Original Inhabitants, the Megafauna of North America, LLC, those "Muwekma Ohlone Nation" poseurs and speciesist imperialists are in for a rude awakening. You think efforts to bring back the Mastodon are for science? Do not be so naive! And just you wait for when the Giant Ground Sloths weigh in on this matter ...

19 I don't like "The Elect," because that's a Bible term for Christian believers. Yes, yes, it was used in the Crusades. Why not use a more proper Marxist term, the Vanguard? It doesn't carry the religious context, I suppose, but at least it isn't using in sarcasm a perfectly good term found in Scripture.

Posted by: Smallish Bees at April 17, 2021 11:42 AM (tV3jI)

20 Yeah. I like that; "the elect". I've always disliked calling them "elite" as that gives them too positive a twist.
And btw these folks are for the most part SELF elected. Somewhat like our faux President and his chippie vp.
yeah they've elected themselves to be our masters our betters our dictators.
It's why so many Karens exist. It's a delight for them to go off on some poor shlub just trying to get thru the day.
It makes them feel like they're better than everyone and part of something that others aren't. (even if there are others for the moment it's all about them).
So far no one's gone off on me but then I don't go out in public that much and live in a small town anyway.
We're off the beaten track and there's no large city that we're a bedroom community for so everyone knows that anyone in town is most likely a resident.
BLM and Antifa are in for a big surprise if somehow they decide to come here to start stuff. I don't believe they can even get a foothold in the school which is usually where they try to wedge themselves in first.
Even our Muslims keep a low profile. Mind their business and no one gives them any static and if anyone did we'd all defend them on the spot.
I got strange Black people smile at me cause I'm smiling in general (b4 the diaper) don't know them and they don't know me but we see someone just like us so we react to that and not the color.

21 "occupy the unceded territory of the Muwekma Ohlone Nation, the sovereign nation and original people of the skies, land, and waters."

Shoulda brought that up with Spain a long time ago, when it was still a pile of dirt. Mexico had that same pile of dirt for, what, seventeen years, before we got it and, eventually, started to create something of questionable value on it. How about we give the Ohlone all of Google and call it even?

Could I suggest that post authors use hyperlinks instead of embeds, or else back up embeds with hyperlinks, for those of us whose browsers block embeds? Fewer embeds makes for faster page loads, too.

That's not racism, that's discrimination. And not the bad kind.
Discrimination is used all the time by animals. It's an evolutionary instinct for self preservation as those things not like itself can be dangerous.
And even those of the same species can be dangerous so we tend to draw the line at family or tribe.
This is something that all species do. We live in an entropic universe. To continue living we must take energy from another source.
There are many sources that can be used but some are more dangerous than others and some are less useful than others so a being has to use discrimination when selecting the source for it's next infusion of energy.

I'll judge someone not on those merits, but on how they act and speak.  If someone proves to be an a**hole, then they will (and should) be accorded the same treatment.

There are many sources that can be used but some are more dangerous than others and some are less useful than others so a being has to use discrimination when selecting the source for it's next infusion of energy.

Which goes a long way toward explaining why the obsession with wind power and solar power, with their baked into the recipe low energy densities, is a path to an evolutionary dead end.

101 In the years leading up to 1861, division among the inhabitants of the United States grew. Members of Congress assaulted each other in the chamber. In "Bloody Kansas," Jayhawkers and Bushwhackers murdered each other. John Brown led his expedition to seize Harper's Ferry in the hope of arming a slave rebellion that would purge the sinful nation through its blood. When cadets from the Citadel fired cannon on Fort Sumter, tens of thousands of volunteers gleefully signed up for war, not with a grim sense of patriotic duty but looking forward to the opportunity to kill some rebels or Yankees. This didn't all happen overnight. It took decades of being literally taught to hate one's countrymen.

Calvinism is way more complicated than that. Calling Christians Anti Semites is pretty trite really, as you could call them all that if you go back far enough. I am a Presbyterian since birth and we still argue over what "The Elect" means. I know it has played no place in our church teachings for the 40 years I attended. Calvinism is complex, not something to be bashed with a quip here and there. You can do that to any faith, I promise you. There are better ways to be, and study of doctrine can't hurt.

116 "... all of this reinforces the worst impulses we have as human beings: our tendency toward tribalism and sectarianism that a truly liberal education is meant to transcend."

Even Christianity has a degree of "tribalism", and many groups naturally form bonds that end up "protecting their own".  This is not bad, and many communities form strong regions/districts with several levels of "tribal groups" that  freely/naturally intermingle. ... Boy Scouts, sports teams/leagues, concerts in the park, little theater, lodges, Veterans groups, etc.

Wokeness is a top down weapon aimed at destroying those "natural" groups, or infiltrating them to force them into the Woke Tribe (wearing the old group as a skin suit). ... CRT breaks all those other social tribes, and demands obedience to their Woke Tribe, which supersedes all others.

"Tribes" (including religious ones) that "accept" other (co-friendly) tribes are fine and dandy ... and Americanism/Exceptionalism is based in our Bill of Rights and Declaration that sets a higher law of acceptance of "the other" tribes.  CRT/Wokeness does not accept any other "tribes" ... it is the mask of Totalitarianism, and "Marxist" weapon of mass destruction (of the sovereign individual).

Just a thought; if you call the woke-atarians commies, they'll laugh and love it. And it will have no effect on the undecided or indifferent. Like it or not calling someone a commie in the US makes you look like a '50s throwback. ( While, yes, it should have almost as much impact as calling someone a Nazi, but here we are... )
Tagging the CRCultists with Christian terms is like holy water to vampires; they hate Christianity, which should be obvious. Calling a woke idiot a 'fundamentalist' to his face would enrage him.
Further it's accurate in this sense, they aren't commies. NOt a single one of them would give up their private property. Ask one of them if they would give up their IPhone. "But it's for the Common Good that I have this iPhone," they might reply.
Mocking them with Christian terms wounds them because of the malicious caricature they have of Christianity. They are the very image of what they insist Christian believers are; dumb, easily mislead, un scientific, etc.
While neo-Maosist or nuFascist might be more accurate in the ideological sense, we have to mock the to point of frustration, not gild their red roses.

144 "If you don't know about..." I don't.  And even when I was younger, if I ever caught myself listing the famous people and super-successes who went to my high school, I would have felt like a freaking jerk.
My parents spent an absolute fortune sending me and my siblings to private schools, kindergarten through college.  I moved away from my home town the year I graduated from college.  Which was a highly selective, top-tier private school known for business, law, and basketball, in reverse order and not the one you're thinking of.   I can say that I got a first-rate classical education.  But I didn't know anything, and was barely trainable.
What I learned after moving away was that no one outside of a small northeastern geographic area knew or cared about the high school that I attended, and everyone out here went to the Land Grant schools and my high-rent college, the one that was that was supposed to help with the whole "networking" thing, ended up actually working against me.
All my kids went to local, rural public schools and public colleges.  They are much better at everything than me.

153 Couldn't find a link to that page with the letter.

Other than the mention of it there isn't a link in any of the other links that I could find anyway.

Maybe the COB was going to create a link but forgot or the new format lost it.

Anyway my link goes to the blog post of Bari Weiss that has the letter in full near the bottom after some comments by Bari. So it's about half way down.
It's quite amazing considering that this guy knew he could have some trouble coming his way even tho he's already taken his child out of the school. That's because a lot of private schools and most all public schools are embracing this propaganda as they have done something similar for years which is why the kids we see these days are like they are. And why so many voted for a socialist party and despise the country and capitalism.

CRT just provides a format to regularize the "teaching" of this hateful propaganda.

Sometime back I ran into a listing of links to the long-running saga of a poster named "Stuck On Stupid", who had a girlfriend, "hummingbird" who started posting here, too. He had related an elaborate story about how he had thwarted and turned the tables on cow orkers who had tried to get him fired at work for Bad Think. IIRC, his tales eventually were judged to be bullshit.

130 Since there is no T to go OT on, I thought I'd just mention that I was going through some of my father's old stuff, and I came across the obituary for my mother's brother, my uncle Elmer Glidden. It noted that he was the leader of the Ace of Spades Squadron in WWII as a Marine dive bomber.  If I remember rightly, he took the spot when Henderson went down at Guadacanal, and kept it through Midway and beyond.   104 missions. A fine man. Stayed in the Marines through 1969, then retired back to my home town, so I got to know him pretty well.

185 Usually when stuff disappears or reappears it means that a variable is being changed in more than one place.

This happens when you don't pass your variables to subprograms properly and they change things when they weren't supposed to.

Or you use the variable as a program wide one and then change it in a subprogram thinking it's a local variable.

I know. I've done that a few times when I was a programmer. That sort of problem takes a lot of tracing to find where stuff gets changed and when and why. It's a real pain in the ass. Proper programming and declaring your variables usually keeps it from happening. When you get rushed or are tired Sh!t happens.

210 There is a  hilarious situation underway at my alma mater. The administration there is Woke On Steroids, the staff has to know every student's preferred pronouns, ambitious racial hiring preferences are now in effect, with disastrous results, every consequence of out of control SJWarriorism is now occurring, with the end result being steeply falling admissions, and students leaving to go to other schools.

The latest episode in this Soap Opera of Suckage: A homeless encampment has set up directly across from the campus. (campus in this case comprising about a half a city block). Across a one-way street is a very small park, that is where the camp now exists. The school's president, dean, CEO, whatever she is...has conveniently sequestered herself at her second home in...wait for it...FLORIDA. From her fortress of Wokeness, she has been sending missives to the faculty, staff, and administration about how to be less white, more inclusive, all the usual B.S.
When word reached her about the homeless camp, she hurried out a message to her deputy to get the police there STAT to clear out the camp....(cont)

214 There's a sort of CAPTCHA that relies on css to hide an input box, and then rejects any submission that has that box filled. The idea is that a human with a browser won't see it (because the css hides it) but a bot that's just processing the HTML will see the input box and drop something in there. From the human's point of view, there is no CAPTCHA to complete; just fill in the input, and you never see the hidden input box.
Might work in this case. I don't know if that's been superseded by spambots by now or if it's still effective.

How about a big static generator? Get some St. Elmo's fire going.

I forget what they call those and then there's the one by Tesla (the scientist not the car) with the large balls on the end of pillars and you crank in like 10kv electron volts so you get lighting bolts.

222 There's a sort of CAPTCHA that relies on css to hide an input box, and then rejects any submission that has that box filled. The idea is that a human with a browser won't see it (because the css hides it) but a bot that's just processing the HTML will see the input box and drop something in there.

So that's how those work! I was all "WTF?" whenever I encountered those.

I got some meals that I want to buy and then If they're any good I'll stock them like there's no tomorrow cause they are cheap and off the shelf not special 25 year stuff that costs $100 for a months worth of food.

Don't forget to stock water and water containers. Cause you can live over 30 days without food but only 3 days without water. Maybe a little longer depending on the environment but it's not long.

The entire concept of particles and a quantized universe is a theoretical model that is useful for being predictive, but may not be correct (I think "particles" are interference waves in the electromagnetic medium). Remember, when the Earth was considered the center of the universe, the nonsensical loop-de-loop orbits of planets around the Earth were also predictive but completely wrong. And yet, still useful.

251 No. Can't recycle your piss. Well you CAN for a while but eventually it becomes full of toxins and you start get delirious.

And yes some have tried it in at sea situations. Just like sea water. Too much salt causes the kidneys to shut down and then there's all the toxins in the water cause it all dissolves in sea water.

Oh and don't forget some way of preserving your stored water. Even clorox will do and a water filter when you wind up having to use whatever you can get.

1500 to 2000 calories a day per person. Doesn't matter how many meals you have it's the calories that count. You can go to like a 1000 but you will start to shed some serious weight and not be very frisky.

I think she should write another woke to the student who complained about "institutional racism" and say "Congratulations! You are so perspicacious.. We've made you the liason (sp) to the homeless encampment, which will require you give up your dorm room and live with the homeless for at least the first semester" She wouldn't have the balls to do it, though.
My son will probably have to deal with all of this eventually unless we can find a school that's not in woke overdrive and teaches botany. He's missed a lot of it at the community college, however-thankfully.

302 Wait'll they start teaching mathematics that's not racist.

McDonalds will start putting in machines at the drive in windows.

Have one old guy sitting in the back putting in food into the bins and dropping the deposit in the safe.

No worries about someone shooting up the drive in attendees anymore.

Speaking of hash, I made some of that Marry Kitchen corned beef hash from Hormel the other day. Followed their instructions, and fried it in a skillet until somewhat crispy, and then cracked an egg over the top, and continued frying and turning until the egg was hard-cooked. It was yummy, with a little green hot sauce on it.

Oh yeah. You got to let it get crispy or its just mushy.

I put it in a pan and put it in the oven. Like bacon you can time it so it comes out the same every time and you don't have to stand there all the while.

306 Most remarkable, and outstanding writing. This is what I've been lurking here for years for, and then you cap it with my favorite Ravel ( and Joe Walsh's, too!! ). I do indeed sense a turning away by decent, normal human beings from this abominable shite that we are drowning in. Bravo, I continue to persist and endeavour to perservere, as I know you all are out there! Cheers, all!

307 Spent my morning researching the intersection of statutory interpretation and the purpose of language in communicating the legislature's intent in enacting statutes (which only exist through words given that our species currently lacks (well, supposedly depending on whom you ask) telepathic capability) so I'm late to this fabu party.  Krebs - yes, Faure's Pavane is beautiful, one of my favorite pieces of classical music.  My favorite piece of his is Sicilienne, op. 78:  www.youtube.com/watch?v=U5Y0uQLgriA  Sublime!

308 I am fixing to buy an AR-15 80% lower, and possibly some of the other parts, with a view to building a 9 mm rifle with a 16" barrel, that uses the Colt straight mags. Any suggestions from the Horde?

That sound like a nice build. Can you link the magazine?

310 Why go with 9mm? Get a .45 there's a bunch of mags for .45 out there.

Well, thanks.  Glad you like the Ravel.  I played it (well, part of it) as a two-piano arrangement as a youth.

312 "My interest is not "How do we get through to these people?” We cannot, at least not enough of them to matter. The question is "How can we can live graciously among them?”

He got the first part right (something very few "conservatives" grasp), but he's all wet on the second. We cannot live graciously among them. We must demoralize, humiliate, and rout them from public life.

313 Oops - my bad, Joe's was Ravel's Pavane for a Sleeping Beauty, from So What. Still remarkable for R&R at the time...

315 Adding to the WTF quotient of of the past 16 months.
From WZs: Spanish language media reported last Sunday that radical pro-abortion supporter Maria de Valle Gonzalez Lopez died during what she labeled her "dream” abortion operation.
What the absolute hell? Dream abortion?

Thanks. The new format doesn't work the same as the old. There is a learning curve, for sure.

321 So Biden could go golfing (he didn't ) but couldn't meet the Japanese PM.  Running like a well oiled machine, 60% approval ratings, all is well.

Posted by: Only Context at April 17, 2021 05:15 PM (xEIoY)

322 Biden is playing with some rando and some other rando? Trump used to play golf with Tiger Woods and Rory Mc'ilroy, (the turncoat) Biden is playing with two nobodies. Good call by Biden, I doubt he finished a hole.

The Elect works because it's Gnostic. CRT is a variant of Gnosticism (just about everything the Left spouts is). And Hannity is channelling Thomas Sowell.

329 For those who are apparently confused by the term "The Elect," it has nothing to do with political elections, but is a reference to the Calvinist "Doctrine of Predestination and Divine Election," according to which God--omnipotent and omniscient--has antecedent knowledge--before the formation of the world--of who will be saved and who will not.

The saved are thus "predestined" and form a group collectively referred to in this theology as "The Elect."

330 The name of the artist who made the Praying Hands is Albrecht - not Albert - Durer (with an umlaut over the "u," which I can't do on this computer).
