Gun Thread (4-6-2014)

Shock! Chicago Safer After Gun Control Laws Loosened

Repeating the experience of, literally, everywhere else that has loosened gun laws, Chicago's murder rate has declined to levels not seen in 50 years.

On Tuesday, the Chicago Police Department announced that the city experienced its lowest murder rate since 1958 in the first quarter of 2014. There were 6 fewer murders than the same timeframe in 2013 — a 9 percent drop — and 55 fewer murders than 2012, police said.

Now, it's a short time period and correlation isn't causation, but you can bet that if the stats were going the other way the gun grabbers would be shouting it from the mountaintops.

With any luck, maybe Massachusetts will come around soon.

Bill Maher: Still An Unfunny Douchebag

You shotgun pumpin', cousin humpin', toothless inbreds sure do love yore guns too much.

“Of course, I think the Republicans are insane about guns,” Maher told Ramos, “because they love guns, which is a sick position to have in the first place, to love something like a gun? I don’t love my gun, I have it the way I have, maybe, you know, antibiotics. It’s not something I love, it’s something in case of an emergency that I might have to use.”

13 I'm curious as to whether Bill Maher has any hobbies. Or does being a jerk take up all of his time? Because if he genuinely believes what he said in that quote, he cannot allow himself to take pleasure in the use of an object or skill in anything other than its most utilitarian application.

Who do you suppose is going to make effective use of anything in an emergency? Someone who keeps the item stored away in hopes of never needing it or someone who practices with it on a recreational basis?

18 I was around (on the job) in the early '90s when we were in the high 800s low 9's. One of the main reasons the murder rate is lower here is the paramedics are even better than they were back then, and the trauma units are badass from years of practice. That's never taken into consideration.

29 "Eich’s donation in support of Prop 8 was confidential, by law. The only reason it is known, why any of the donations are known, is the Internal Revenue Service illegally leaked the donor list to a gay rights group who posted it online. Someone in government broke the law and gave what amounts to a “hit list” to progressive foot soldiers who have been targeting donors for their personal beliefs."

No, Eich's contribution was NOT confidential, by law or any other means. It was recorded in campaign finance reports available at any time for public inspection, and was also posted online through the Cal-Access database maintained by the CA Secretary of State. Most states have searchable campaign finance databases now, as California did back in 2008.

I am as appalled by the lefty fascism of OKCupid, Mozilla etc but it is straight-up incorrect to say that Eich's $1,000 contribution to the Yes on Prop 8 campaign was in any way "confidential by law" Sticking to this  gross inaccuracy does not help advance the pushback against the intolerance of the Mozilla/OKCupid crowd.

31 Indulged in some hot WECSOG action yesterday. I bought a Magpul fixed carbine stock a while ago because I wanted a fixed stock on my AR-15 middy and I wanted something that looked good and didn't cost a lot. Trouble was, the LOP was way too short - it was made for "operatorz" with body armor. So I busted out the Dremel (it ain't WECSOG without Dremel) and ground out two relief cuts on the buffer tube rails for the stock's cross-screw a few inches behind where the screw normally would pass ahead of the rails. Still didn't quite fit, so I channeled the buffer tube body slightly with a round file. Turned out great. Here's a pic:

I could've predicted the outcome of that first test. (well not getting squished as they can usually avoid that maybe their balance was affected by the operation on their inner ear.)

Hadn't they ever heard of the saying "like herding cats"?

You really have a tough time or a really special cat to get one trained.

Lots of time and love and treats and maybe they'll do a few tricks. They're still easily distracted or get bored and wander off.

And anyone who'd strap explosives on an animal to kill humans is guilty of war crimes. IMO.

66 Mahers ideas on the intended uses for firearms are totally beside the point . If one wants one or more guns for hunting , recrational shooting , self defense , or just to spoon with in an intimate setting , those uses are all part of the civil right . Well , the spooning part may be just an awkward family tradition , but I don't always have a sister or cousin around when I'm feeling romantic . Find where the Yamato was sunk , grab one of the 18" main guns , all thoroughly barnacle encrusted by now , and fuck Maher with it .

One person is dead and a second is under arrest after a robbery early Friday morning in Autauga County in which the homeowner fired shots.

Authorities say 18-year-old Marbury resident Mikel Steven Smith of Marbury was killed when he tried to force his way into a home overnight in the Booth community.

According to Autauga County Chief Deputy Joe Sedinger, Smith was armed with a knife when he tried to break into the home on County Road 81. Sedinger said the female homeowner feared for her safety, and for that of her niece, when she fired several shots at the intruder.

I think that lady's name is Bill Maher or something.

The Yamato was located, and filmed.  However, removing one of the barrels from its main battery to perform the recommended (and much needed) bodily exploration on Mr. Maher seems impractical.

Wild west:  I believe I read on a good gun forum (THR?) that the "wild west" in fact was not that well-armed, despite myth and Hollywood stereotypes.

Guns, and ammo, were expensive.  Support/repair/etc. was distant (and expensive).  People were not well-off.  So for simple reasons of economics, there were not that many firearms around - at least nothing like most fictional versions depict.  Cowboys or ranch hands would rely on the rancher/owners to issue them rifles and ammo needed for security, as they generally lacked the $$$ for such tools.

This doesn't mean there weren't times/places with plenty of guns (shoot-outs did occur, but not often).  But the great majority of the small population was not armed.  At least that's what I recall being discussed and fairly well documented.

And Perino kept distracting me by threatening to flash her undies. Missed half the interview as a result.

98 Daddy WarPig, if you can find a copy of Paul Kidd's Albedo:The Role Playing Game.

Its science fiction with furry animals.  The furry animal part makes people twitch and run away.

But it has a system of determining your damage roll from a bullet strike or that quarterstaff.  For firearms the DM has to factor in if the character is wearing body armor and did it penetrate the armor?  Where did it hit - arm or leg or torso?  What is the character's body frame size?  Once you determine these factors look at the Damage Determination chart to see if it was merely a grazing wound or as bad as catastrophic.  Also where the wound is, for example a head wound will affect the character's Reason, Initiative, and Manuel Dexterity.

How lethal are firearms in this game system?  The one time at a con I managed to gather enough people to play it.  Well the rabbit in body armor after taking one hit to torso and one grazing hit, well he was in a medical pod on life support.

Oh, and Chicago murders this year and looser gun laws.  Isn't it sort of silly to even suggest that, since the changes in gun laws are so recent, and the obstacle course for would-be gun owners still so substantial?   I understand the bit about doing like the idiotic dominant cultural/political elements do, with their pristine illogic and massive coral reef of myth and distortion as provided by the "press" and "education".  But still.

"If I were as logically challenged, ignorant, and bigoted as the people trying to destroy the Second Amendment, along with the rest of the constitution and America's remaining freedom and prosperity, I'd argue that new gun laws led to the drop in murders this year in Chicago.  There's little doubt that, like everywhere else, this will be the case down the road, but it's too early to report this predictable and happy outcome."

Re "wild west" firearms ownership, yes, shotguns.  And other guns, too.  I particularly remember the ranchers/cattle owners issuing rifles to their cowboys/hands.  Makes sense.  They needed them, but couldn't afford them.

I was mostly just trying to convey what I found to be a persuasive case that the "wild west" - while certainly wild, in the more important sense of sparse population, abundance of natural dangers and challenges, and lack of civilized amenities including law enforcement - did not generally feature lots and lots of common people heavily armed, much less frequent gun play.  As depicted in novels and movies.

144 Nearly everyone who lived in the old west frontier had some type of gun.  Those who lived out in the prairie usually had both a shotgun and a rifle of some sort.  But only a low percentage had a pistol.  What is different from what you see in the movies is that in a lot of cases they were not allowed to carry them in town.

The gun grabbers of today like to tout that as having more "gun control" then than we do now.  That is absolute BS.

Gun fights in town did happen on a periodic basis which is why there were laws forbidding carrying a gun in town to begin with.  John Westley Hardin didn't get his reputation by hitting people with a stick.

159 @153 - I'm a gun owner, but do not consider myself a 'gun nut' or 'gun lover' or anything of that nature. And, much as it scares me to do so, I agree with Maher to a point. There are people who 'love' everything from stamps to cars to WWII warbirds to steam locomotives. Some of these are quite inanimate, some are recreational possessions, and some are mostly worshiped from afar as ownership is out of the reach of most people. As things that were once accessible as recreational possessions to much of the middle class (cars, light aircraft, etc.) are increasingly placed out of reach by cost, legal, and storage/accessibility restrictions, people shift their horizons down to things they can actually afford to acquire, store, and use within a hundred miles of home. So people who might have been pilots or racers in an earlier era are now obsessing over the bluing on the frame of their M1911.

163 163 Heh. Questionman, I followed your nic link back to your Blog. That is some of the funniest satire I've ever read. The sad part is some people actually believe that kind of crap.

164 Dude you gotta' start yer' screamin' earlier in the gun thread . You'll get more mileage thataway . Also , get fucked .

165 The Glock isn't suppose to come out until next year. I was thinking of getting the G42 until he said that. I'd rather wait for a 9mm since all my others are on that platform. Makes stocking ammo easier.

Posted by: lindafell at April 06, 2014 11:33 AM (PGO8C)

166 BTW I already have a G26 but it's just a bit too big for me to CC. It's my favorite to shoot though. I'm only 5 feet tall so it's really hard for me to conceal a gun on my person without obvious imprinting or dressing like a total bag lady. I can do it with a micro that's why I'm so interested in Glock coming out with a G42 sized gun in 9mm.

167 118 There's a very good book by two guys, Anderson and Hill, called The Not So Wild West that looks at how quickly the institutions of home (surveys, courthouses, etc) were established and how rare violence really was. Posted by: Skookumchuk at April 06, 2014 01:26 PM (OSzB9) * The Oregon Provisional legislature was put together in the Oregon Territory based on some ad hoc meetings about what to do about wolves killing stock, and so the group was pre-set when they had to figure out how to settle the estate of one of the richest settlers in the area who died intestate. They wound up with an executive branch, legislature, judiciary and territorial law enforcement. Order develops spontaneously in human relations, if it is allowed to do so by other humans. Oh. I have heard in the West most organized towns had rules against open carry because it was too much of a temptation for drunk/young/hotheaded/just off the job/all of the above bravos to try to play dick-measuring by shootings and bowies.

169 170 That's why I called it satire, JeanQ. He'll prolly be offended after he looks up the meaning of satire.

172 "...because they love guns, which is a sick position to have in the first place, to love something like a gun? " What's a truly sick position is how leftists lurve their cable tv.

173 Teh troll smells familiar.  Asylum, indeed!

Kinda like, oh I don't know, that crazy thing from the waaayyy northeastern region.

174 I thought questionman at #163 was a sock. Then I saw his blog link. It appears sincere. Still, not sure I'm buying it. He seems too much like a left-wing loon that we'd invent.

So, if it's a lefty-mocking sock - well played, sir.

If it's real - holy shit. That's weapons-grade crazy.

177 176 Taro, he seems really angry and is clearly a racist.

178 lindafell, check out the springfield XD-S 9mm and the S&W Shield 9mm. Both are single stack. I have the XD-S 9mm and love it. Nice trigger ACD recoil isn't bad. The Shield is less expensive and the same size.
