How Comcast Bought the Democratic Party
— Ace

The appellation "Democrat-Media Complex" is more than just a jibe.

The communications giant Comcast announced in February that it would buy Time Warner Cable for $45 billion, creating the largest cable provider in America, with more than 33 million customers. That is about one third of the U.S. cable and satellite television market. FCC approval is required for the merger to go into effect. Critics of the deal say it would lessen competition and lead to even shoddier customer service. They are probably right, as all of us will soon find out, because there is little chance the merger will be stopped. Comcast, Time Warner, and their political fixers have spent years preparing for this moment—by buying off the Democratic Party.

Continetti ticks off Comcast's lavish donations to the Democrats, and Time Warner's as well. He throws up his hands at trying to estimate the value of the in-kind donations NBC and its parent company MSNBC provide the Democrat Party through relentless pro-Obama and anti-Obama-critic messaging, though he does ballpark this value at somewhere between "huge" and "felonious." (My words, not his.)

And yet the Republicans are not making an issue of this merger.

It is something of a political irony that Republicans, who for ideological reasons are pro-business, have not raised questions about, or objections to, the conjoining of two Democratic institutions into a media trust. If Republicans had any sense, they would wage war against Comcast and its Democratic enablers and turn the merger into a live issue. Needless to say they have not done so, perhaps in the wrongheaded and futile hope of scraps from the table of the Comcast cable beast, perhaps in the foolish and selfish notion that David Cohen may one day add another man to his company of lobbyists.

...

Imagine the noises from MSNBC if the merger involved Rupert Murdoch or Glenn Beck or Sheldon Adelson or the K-O-C-H brothers. Criticism would lead the NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams, Costas would interrupt a Sunday Night Football game to decry corporate consolidation, Fallon would crack wise in his monologue.

62 ace, think you might want to add this as well. http://tinyurl.com/l4ukgkd Remember how we told you the other day that ComcastÂ’s faltering stock price might end its merger with Time Warner Cable? Well: The federal government just saved ComcastÂ’s stock price. The Street reports: Comcast rose 1.92% to $50.89 at 3:17 p.m. on Wednesday after the cable giant announced Comcast Business announced it was awarded a General Services Administration Schedule 70 contract. The contract permits the company to sell directly to federal, state and local government customers. The Schedule 70 contract initially applies to Comcast Business Ethernet services, but Comcast plans to expand it to its complete voice product suite, Business Internet and Business TV services. "Our work with federal, state and local government customers has shown us that bandwidth usage in government agencies is rapidly increasing as technology and constituent programs demand it," said Comcast Business executive director of government Kevin Carney. "Now, federal government agencies can more easily turn to Comcast Business and our Ethernet services for secure, reliable, high-performance connectivity in many regions, including the Washington, D.C. area and other key federal markets."

92 I really hope wireless data will eventually get fast enough to destroy the cable monopolies. But they said 4G would do that and it didn't. Now they say 5G (or whatever comes next) will do it. But by then people will be demanding 4k streams for all the video they watch. Comcast's monopoly position is sadly very secure. Maybe Google will lay more fiber. Something.

At least on the AppleTV, there's a way you can stream games to it.  However, you have to subscribe directly to the NFL's (or MLBs, or NBAs, or NHLs) online sites to get an account.

What pisses me off though is at least the NFL still blacks out local games.

98 Conservatives need to find some way to promote competition among the cable companies, at least for high-speed Internet (which, I suspect, is a big reason many people have cable). I just recently moved to Texas; the process of signing up for and getting electricity was more modern and easier to do online than the process of signing up for cable Internet. I was able to complete the electricity sign up before arriving and it was on and ready for us when we pulled in the driveway. Time-Warner required that we be there to sign up and—despite this—assumed that we had high-speed Internet during the signup process. (Their timeout was low enough that trying to sign up over 3G was doomed to failure.) The difference, I suspect, is that electricity is open to competition in Round Rock, but cable is not.

The whole family can't sit around and watch a phone.  So now you've cut off your nose to spite your face, how's that gonna work out?

(I've been without cable since 2006, not out of any ideological pique but because I'm naturally reclusive and it's too easy to spend every night home alone with the tube, and no cable = more money to go to places where there are people.  But I find the "you guys are all destroying American by being entertained!" guy funny.)

138 I do think Comcast is vulnerable to antitrust law -- force them to split into 2 companies -- one owns the pipes, one owns the content. Comcast regularly abuses their monopoly. Comcast puts Comcast-owned CNBC right next to the other cable news networks. Comcast puts Fox Business Network a hundred channels higher. Comcast puts Comcast-owned NBCSports right next to ESPN and ESPN2. Comcast puts Fox Sports all by itself elsewhere on the dial. Comcast also puts there regional sports networks right next to ESPN. It's a small thing, but it's big. There's no need to remember where MSNBC or CNBC are -- they are in the "news block" of channels. There's no need to remember where NBCSports or the regional Comcast sports network is -- they are in the "sports block". A company should be able to own the pipes or the content, but not both. Too much temptation. Too much room for abuse.

They’re not meant for the establishment. “When buying and selling are controlled by legislation, the first things to be bought and sold are legislators.”

180 Right, that's what Comcast is paying for. First, they are paying for their acquisitions to be approved. Basic logic is -- satellite TV is a competitor so not a monopoly. And wireless data is a competitor on the internet side so not a monopoly there either. Second, they are paying to keep the Feds off their back and not launch antitrust investigations that could force them to divest. This content or pipes situation is the same deal that the Feds used on the old Hollywood Studio System when the Feds forced Hollywood to sell off the movie theaters. So Disney makes movies, but doesn't get to own Regal Cinemas. They were forced to pick, content or pipes (delivery system). Content is king, so the studios wisely chose to hold onto the IP and sell off the theater chains.

Maybe if the government would keep their noses out of business world, there'd be more competition.   More people to create more imaginative ways to bring a product to market.

213 Posted by: Dr Spank at April 04, 2014 02:56 PM (P1WNR) I personally like it. There are a few really weird drawbacks. Unlike Charter we have to pay for more speed (charter's base speeds are much higher.) But Charter had other problems (the central pipe in our apartment complex simply couldn't handle the load. We've never had them at the house.) We actually get a better channel line up than we would with charter, but the trade off is we pay for HD. (But get a DVR free, so, it's almost net 0.) With Uverse though you do need a receiver per TV (you might not with cable). On the flip side they make wireless receivers (so we won't have to pull wires into our fireplace room when we get a second TV.) We've had a few connection issues lately, but apparently our plug in the central box broke, which I suppose could happen with cable too.

260 http://tinyurl.com/q9ce3za MSN The Men in Black LOVE then power they took to force Gay Marriage down our throats and are now making up new law wholesale on taxes too! Uncle Sam's Tax Court just ruled that the one-rollover-per-year rule applies to all of a taxpayer's IRAs rather than to each IRA separately. And that ruling, experts say, is in direct conflict with IRS Publication 590, the bible for IRAs. This is as Slo-Joe says "a big fucking deal"... Judge decides "fuck Pub 590 I say all the accounts are one" and VOILA we have new law kids... yup yup rule by regulatory fiat and Judicial Imperialism ROCKS Pub 590's plain language Generally, if you make a tax-free rollover of any part of a distribution from a traditional IRA, you cannot, within a one-year period, make a tax-free rollover of any later distribution from that same IRA. You also cannot make a tax-free rollover of any amount distributed, within the same one-year period, from the IRA into which you made the tax-free rollover. The one-year period begins on the date you receive the IRA distribution, not on the date you roll it over into an IRA. DUmbass motherfucking goddamned lawyers disguised as judges

302 Presumably this is because the cable infrastructure requires a monopoly of that particular service. I.e., you can't have 100 cable companies because of all of the wiring. One set of cables, one company.

Even though cable has competing industries (satellite), there are advantages to that particular format that make it monopolistic, regardless of that competition.

They could  share  or lease into a "main cable".   Railroads do this all the time.   Common trackage might have two or three railroad companies leasing their right to use it.

Main cables  and infrastructure could be built by communities, or better yet, a private entity that is separated from the  actual programing side of the operation.

There are huge rifts building up between the moneyed elite Dems owned by Silicon Valley and Hollywood, and the coalitions that thought they'd finally get their "justice". The iconic battle is the Hippies vs Nerds in SF or the Anarchists vs Nerds in Oakland The Peoples Republic of California has pretty much ended the same way that "Animal Farm" did, with the animals watching the pigs dine in the same manner as their former human oppressors The hippies, community activists, minorities, and anarchists will lose the battle in time because the very politicians they hope will bring "equality" are in the back pockets of their enemies and there is no opposition party to threaten the powerful "Really folks, what are you going to do about it anyway? We know you won't vote Republican. Here, have some free bus passes"

416 Update on the story of that Detroit truck driver who got beaten up by a mob after he stopped to render aid after he accidentally hit a child with his truck.   Surprise surprise, there may have been   "racial overtones" to the attack.

White Man Beaten By Mob In Detroit After Hitting Boy With Truck: Was It A Hate Crime?

CBS Detroit: http://cbsloc.al/1q8MvKw

DETROIT (WWJ) - As a 54-year-old Roseville man clings to life in the hospital following a brutal mob beating on DetroitÂ’s east side, many are starting to wonder if the whole thing was racially motivated.

As first reported by WWJ Newsradio 950, an 11-year-old boy suffered a broken leg on Wednesday when he was hit by a pickup truck after walking into the street near Morang and Balfour. The driver, Steven Utash, immediately got out of his truck after hitting the boy and was viciously attacked by 10 to 12 men. The beating was so brutal, Utash was rendered unconscious.

UtashÂ’s son Joseph told WWJÂ’s Gary Lundy Thursday night that his father remains in a medically induced coma, nearly unrecognizable due to his injuries. He also said his wallet was stolen from his truck.

...

Detroit Police Sgt. Michael Woody said Steven Utash was not at fault for the accident.

“Our preliminary investigation shows the child stepped in front of his vehicle,” Woody said. “He did exactly the right thing. He stopped his vehicle, he got out and he tried to render aid to a small child. He did exactly what he was supposed to do… It was a small child and it was an accident; is what it was.”

...

Joseph Utash said he believes his father was intentionally targeted or even worse, that skin color might have played a role. Based on witness accounts, the attackers were African American.

Shit, wait, that's Fallout NV's add-on Old World Blues. I can create a series of underground bunkers where scientists work night and day to control the plague that led to the Zombie apoc... Dammit, that's Resident Evil. I can build a huge underground city to avoid the machine menace... ugh. How about building a giant gravity-powered transport between the two remaining unpoisoned cities on opposite sides... dammit. I don't even own a Television and I can't think of anything to do after the disaster that isn't on TV. Wait! Repopulate the earth through lots and lots of... (checks TV schedule) DAMMIT!

433 I will review the IRA case in more detail. But could this be a case where the IRS and its publication was at odds with the statute, and the tax court reined them in (though maybe to the detriment of IRA account holders)? I find IRS publications are often not in conformity with the actual tax code.

434 If you remember, the Democrats did this many times before. Every Republican who went on TV was asked whether or not they agree with Sarah Palin, or if they agree with Tea Party, or if they agree with Rush Limbaugh.

440 That being said, even if the IRS publication was wrong with respect to the tax code, the taxpayer may have had a detrimental reliance case. In theory, the IRS should be barred from asserting that a taxpayer was wrong if it can be shown that the taxpayer relied upon an official IRS publication. Will have to review the case.

446 you don't accidentally have something interpreted contra to the Code for 20 fucking years ----- Code or IRS Publication? They are different.

Posted by: SH at April 04, 2014 11:51 AM (gmeXX)

447 to wit you are properly wondering what "the code" said for 20 years... Let's say for the sake of argument your hope is correct and this ruling is saying "fuck IRS 590 this is what the law says" the Internal Revenue Code Section 408(d)(3)(B) limitation says right there one rollover... thing is the industry, the IRS, and by indifference the Feds have said "what the Code means is yes your IRA is one account but these sub accounts are trickles.... and you can sub regulate them"... Until Judge Magna Robe decides... "nah fuck all y'all the IRS was bugfucked" the IRS SHOULD NOT be in the position to make up Pubs as it goes along and this Income Tax game should not be as convoluted as it is.

449 They are different but entwined my friend and Congress has ceded WAY too much power to artificial horseshit constructions in IRS, Treasury --- I agree with that. My point was the IRS was wrong in its interpretation of the Code. I don't think a taxpayer can use the IRS publication as a source for why it is right, but I do think there ought to be some sort of reliance claim that bars the IRS from taking a different interpretation.

Posted by: SH at April 04, 2014 11:55 AM (gmeXX)

450 Just wait until they start using their power over Americans' home internet connections to make trouble for Republican/conservative-leaning media. The US right's opposition to network neutrality was absurdly self-destructive.

Posted by: anonymous irishman at April 04, 2014 11:57 AM (DJgfL)

451 It is something of a political irony that Republicans, who for ideological reasons are pro-business, have not raised questions about, or objections to, the conjoining of two Democratic institutions into a media trust. -- Think why that would be the case. 1. GOP has every intention of doing the same. 2. 'Pro-Business' is pro-merger monopoly. What's ironic? That it's being tagged as if ironic. Wth does anyone think the Patriot Act NSA is doing in Utah, etc. set in motion by GWB? As if corporations like Comcast aren't getting bugmint sponsored gigs to facilitate serfdom in America. Our government, due to those IN government, IS fascist. Fascists are 'pro-business' for the "right sort" of PC-Marxist business. "Redistributing wealth" like Clinton/Kerry Obama State Dept: "missing" BILLIONS O' BUCKS stolen from taxpayers' backsides. So where's the electronic trail when "following the money"? Conveniently missing, too. That's "social justice" for you empowered by stripping Americans of the Inalienable Rights that can not be stripped, stolen, thieved, relinquished, sold. Comcast "bought" the Democratic Party -- that a financial transaction transpired, no surprise. Money changes hands all the time. But the Democrat Party and the Republican Party have long been mere appendages of the Beast. Today, call it Comcast if you like, though Comcast itself is only another corporation assimilated into the Beast. Tomorrow, re-organization, another merger, another name. Same negative effect on our lives.

Posted by: panzernashorn at April 04, 2014 01:02 PM (/vO0r)

452 But I thought the REPUBLICANS were the ones in the hip pocket of the corporations!!!!! Seriously, I'd like to see a push on publicizing the real corporatism and graft of the Ds. Break this 'Friend of th'workin' Man' myth once and for all.

Posted by: --- at April 04, 2014 01:14 PM (MMC8r)

453 And yet the Republicans are not making an issue of this merger. I'm gobsmacked.
