Wall-building.... when they just usher through hundreds of thousands through the open door.
And for every one who comes in, it's a the whole family coming right behind them, and their families, etc etc because God forbid we can't separate families.
Forget about "illegal" but just how many people do they want in the country?  500 Million in a generation?  A billion?
We were a country of 200M about 50 years ago, i.e. we've increased our population by almost 100% in a little more than a generation.  This is not normal, or healthy, for any country, much less one that is already overdeveloped in most of the coasts and around every major city.
But damn the torpedoes, let's make more Democrats...

Oddly given the topic at hand, it's the lack of walls. The comments have a clear top and bottom (horizontal lines), but the sides are unbounded. It's the one aspect of the new layout I find a little bit disconcerting.

I'd love to see a single vertical line running top-to-bottom along the left side, or something like that. It would provide a horizontal boundary that would be visually useful.

84 I work as a janitor at a large grocery store in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Our store still has "FACE MASKS REQUIRED" signs at the entrances, and most people inside still wear them, but since Governor Abbot's lifted restrictions last month, our managers haven't been enforcing this on customers. Saturday morning, I saw one customer who was around my age (55) or ten years younger at the most. He had a fresh haircut, nice glasses, mask, preppy clothing, except he was completely BAREFOOT. At the time, I was pushing a dust mop across the sales floor. Without even trying very hard, I was picking up broken glass, rusty nails, 2" long wood splinters, plastic dinosaurs, etc.
No shoes, but he wore a mask.

Most of the speakers were not wearing masks but for some reason we were supposed to. I chatted with the guy after the service because he truly is a good guy. But I didn't get why a veteran was wearing a mask after he was vaccinated. My guess is public pressure. I don't want to call him out because I know he is one of the few good ones. The scary part is if they got him, we are in a lot of trouble.

198 I still consider myself a libertarian conservative, and I want to agree with institutional libertarians (quite the oxymoron). Mostly, I want them to believe libertarian things about more than weed.
My major disagreement is that libertarians have an unrealistic view of human nature which causes them to ignore the inevitable downsides to their policies such as legalizing drugs, laissez faire economic regulation, open borders, and so on.
Because any civilization is a system, you cannot just single out one particular policy such as legalizing or even decriminalizing drugs without risking major negative externalities such as effects on families, homelessness, health systems, vehicle and workplace accidents, etc.
Open borders, free trade, and refusing to regulate monopolies and so on cannot be resolved in isolation without reference to welfare systems, effects on the poor, crime, substance abuse, wages, prices, and so on.
I would be a pragmatic libertarian if anything.  People proposing policies have the burden of proof to show me that all the externalities involved have been considered and aired.  In addition, preferably historical and current examples of a proposed policy success should be demonstrated  before making major policy changes at the national level.  Most people argue policies like a partisan attorney which is not a good thing for a republic.

216 Libertarianism fails in practice because people don't really believe in it.

When in power every group bans something. The traditional right banned homosexuality and communism.

The new left plans on banning the traditional right. Permanently if it can.

But even so the evil old traditional right gave a lot more freedom then the new left does. So a *real* libertarian should support someone like a Santorum or a Gary Bauer over an Obama or a Biden.

And how many did?

Exactly. Most of these features I would love, because we used to have them, and I remember how we lost them. Because people were just having so much "fun" with the scrolling marquee and blinking text that they didn't think about how it was affecting other readers. Some browsers and phones got completely fucked and couldn't read the comments once someone did it. And that was when they were doing it correctly before the blog was getting accidentally broken, and then permanently broken requiring a shutdown of all the coding.

I have historically defined myself as the libertarian right since the days of Dubya, Tom, Ridge and Virgil Goode. Someone had to stand against the statism. Trump showed the truth that there was something else going on. He could not have been more right about corporatist leftists. Truly they are too dumb to be ascribed to any political group, but they are very real. Trump made me less libtertarian, because these people don't give a damn about liberty. They want to ruin us, they have shown this over and over.

In theory, we should be more open to personal freedom and liberty. But when the dominant society won't leave you alone, when they have no desire to live and let live, it makes it harder to be libertarian. WE lost the schools, the media, and not corporations. At this point the only play is to join together like the left and try to fix things. I personally have my doubts.

More or less, the Libertarian party candidates often are funded by Democrats.  Occasionally, Republican donors help out Green party candidates.

Personally, I think party funding should be more like Britain's where people pay to be literally members of a party.  I also think that only citizens within a state or congressional district should be able to donate to their candidates. That would tend to curb the ten most wealthy counties in the US from dominating politics.

When I ask her it is a litany of how a number of her female coworkers were mean to her. Honestly I can't decide if women are just generally evil to each other at work or they just think so.

Posted by:AltonJacksonat April 06, 2021 01:44 PM (DUIap)

Ditto. That's why I don't think the button is js (haven't looked TBH), but might be getting controlled by an additional ad blocker or other conflicting software. I have noticed Brave starts going squirrelly and benefits from opening a new window and closing the old one.

I have the Brave shields set to standard - and have modified HOSTS files.

Checking the brave shield at the top right of address bar (lion head) and turning off for this site would be the first thing to check I imagine if the spoiler button isn't working. Then again, I don't think I've seen anything super-duper important there other than a punchline.

My problem is remembering to give the answer - I noticed that if I don't it will blow-out any HTML I put in - so I've just stopped even trying.

You need both: a society cannot function if it's full of feral children and drug addicts, nor can it survive if it is so rigid that there's no way to adapt and change the first time it faces stress. Right now we have the worst of both worlds. We have the feral children, the drug addicts, the nihilists and the aimless. We also have massive global institutions who have become incredibly fragile in their quest to squeeze every last drop of profit possible out of the system.

All this started to go downhill when the LP went hard after the Dopetarians in the 90s.

Yeah, from a libertarian perspective drug legalization makes sense...but to reach out to those people they sold out on literally every other issue - so you can now find "libertarians" calling for draconian taxes and the deplatforming of anyone not aping the woketarian line.

i will never be able to explain bitcoin to you.  I still barely understand money writ large. But it is the lynchpin of our economy.   When I say libertarian, it is as a conservative. These words mean different things to different people. We know "libertarians" get slogged here from time to time. But my definition of the term likely means something different than the standard definition going around.  I thought conservatism went way to far statist and needed some push back.  Trump showed something else was going on. I still have problems finding where he was inherently wrong.

The simpler answer is that you aren't allowed to tell the opposite message in the modern entertainment industry.

The longer answer is that if we use the American terms "right wing fascism" is an oxymoron. You can't have a police state if you don't give the government the power to become a police state. Since the American right seeks to divide power between all the levels of government, businesses, civic orgs, religions, and reserve most of the power for individuals you just can't get to a Hitler.

Hell, even someone like a Pinochet arose as a *reaction* to a leftwing police state.

Posted by: TheJamesMadison, now with mutant superpowers

Corporations are the creation of ownership and stockholders. The government grants certain "rights" to corporations so that law ends up being more logical and reasonable.  There are generally not a complete set of laws for real people (like me and....maybe you), and a different set for corporations.  For many types of law, corporations are a "person". You may argue with that, but it seems to work for a lot of types of law interpretation.  Generally speaking, the Left does not like corporations to be treated as a "person".

There are a lots of types of corporations;  GE and IBM are one example; mega big corporations.. S-type sole proprietor corporations are another.  With a lot in between.  And there are a lot more S-type corporations than mega-corporations.

It's all projection from hollyweird. No matter how "right" they may have gotten some of their prophecy, they always projected what they were going to do on us. Like the "Escape From" Carpenter movies. The fascists are evangelical Christian types, instead of Godless secular politicians. Or as you point out in Robocop, pro-police right wing instead of police-state lefties. About as close to correct would be Demolition Man, with the joy-joy feelings and squishy, useless snowflakes the state created.

I'd noticed from screen captures I took they'd typically remove 4-6k dislikes on any given video. Nyet, comrade! Straws are to be banned during the next General Assembly, as they are an unnecessary luxury on which we can ill afford to waste further resources. All cutlery is to be replaced with the spork, which is a cost-effective and universal tool.

right, hence the problem with political terms. The one the left pulled on everyone is the idea that "libetetarians" are socially liberal and economically conservative.  In my view that is a falsehood Just because someone doesn't want the state crushing them, does not make them socially liberal.

right now we stand in a different place in my opinion. We have people that want to upend America and corporations that are all for it. The game has changed and libertarians need to choose where they stand, they will never be in the majority because both parties need to sell you something in their view.

they are fake libertarians. I am not sure what they are to be honest. The Left is smart to go with drug legalization and taxation. They love them some taxes, and the fakes don't care as long as they can get stoned.

366 Part of the problem in analyzing policies is an ecological fallacy problem. That is what is true for the individual may not be true for society and vice versa.
For example, from history, some people manage to function despite using serious drugs that are now illegal.  Others do not.  So does society make a general rule based on the 10 percent that cannot handle a drug versus the 90 percent who can?  The 90 percent will feel oppressed by such a law and either ignore it or repeal it eventually.  But, the ten percent that have problems will generally get punished and often believe that they were punished unfairly.  Marijuana is one example and alcohol is another.
Then what might be intoxicating to one person may not affect another but laws have to be general in nature. So there is a constant mismatch of the individual versus societal rules.
The libertarian under JS Mills approach would prioritize individual liberty over society as long as others were not harmed while a Bentham approach would measure the utility for the greater good of society than the individual.  Under the Bentham approach, the good of society may include not letting ten percent of the population becoming alcoholics for example and thus restrict alcohol access because of what damage those ten percent that cannot handle alcohol will do in the future.  A libertarian approach would allow all to drink but then punish those for actions harming others while using alcohol but the issue is that actual harm would have to be done to others, discovered, and charged.
You can apply the same analysis to speeding laws, social distancing, firearms ownership, masks, etc. although the proportions can change and the risk of damage to society and individuals can go up and down. Thus, the general rule is that the longer a civilization exists, the more laws exist and the result is less liberty over time.

The problem with Peterson (well, one of many problems) is that he refuses to acknowledge inherent goodness in people. His twisted worldview does not consider that there are people who will not do bad things, and that all people can become good-only people with appropriate external pressures.

What he ascribes to naive or even sinister motivations - what he calls "compelled speech," for example - is no such thing. It is merely the application of social and state pressure to improve society for all. This all boils down to his critical and irredeemable flaw: his rejection of social construction as the basic philosophical lens through which the world should be interpreted. He rejects the core premise and as a result he sees nothing but flaws.

He is wrong. Enforcing an equitable, highly-representative outcome amongst all people regardless of gender, sexual, racial or religious identity is the greatest gift that we can give to the world. All that prevents us from giving that gift are chauvinist deniers like he himself. The key reason for so-called "cancel culture" is to remove these toxic elements from our culture so we can finally make meaningful progress for the first time in human history: meaningful progress in the equalization of all people!
