— andy Could they make a better argument for home schooling?
A ten-year-old Ohio boy was suspended from school after a teacher caught him brandishing a “level 2 lookalike firearm.” What lookalike firearm was this, you ask? Well, Nathan Entingh got in trouble after he pretended to use his finger as a gun. Yep, his finger.
I was tempted to go see how many levels of lookalike firearm there are in Ohio, but I fear that'd be too much of a stupid overload to start the day with.
Could they make a better argument for ending the Academy Awards?
12 Years A Slave is one of those “important subject” films that people will call a “difficult watch” while praising it, implying that you should sit through it to better yourself even if you don’t enjoy the experience. Not surprisingly, a few members of the Academy privately admitted to the LA Times that they wanted to reward the eventual Best Picture winner for its importance (and congratulate themselves for doing so), while foregoing the possible trauma of actually watching it.
Want to win an Oscar? Just make a Very Important Film about an Approved Topic and watch the accolades roll in.

Well, except for the ones with the pink grips for the ladies.
And....I denounce myself.

Morning, ‘rons and ‘ronettes.
Today in 1889 was the birthday of Pearl Fay White, the silent actress / stuntwoman known as “The Queen of the Serials” who is the ancestor of every ass-kicking female heroine today. Born in Missouri, she was a stage actress for several years before throat problems caused her to move on to films. In 1914, she was given the lead in The Perils of Pauline, an adventure serial in which Pauline – heir to a fortune – escapes death in each episode as she frees herself from the clutches of her guardian’s evil secretary. The serial* made her a worldwide star and inspired a host of imitators. Like her successor Helen Holmes, White did many of her own stunts, suffering a host of injuries that would lead to a crippling alcohol habit. Retiring to France a very wealthy woman, she died in 1938 and is buried in Paris.
Here’s a clip from Episode One of Perils. For those of you who have read The Director’s Cut, Pearl’s guardian, Mr. Marvin, was played by Edward José:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JBJdikQnpzw
In 1947, Betty Hutton starred in The Perils of Pauline, a fictionalized version of WhiteÂ’s career that bore absolutely no resemblance to the real White. ItÂ’s still entertaining, though, and I recommend it.
Hope you all have a wonderful day.
*originally in 20 episodes; only a 9-episode reduction survives today.

I'll wait til 12 Years a Slave is on Netflix.. then I'll let my wife watch it.
Same goes for the Woody Allen movie Blue Jasmine..
My wife thinks because these movies are nominated for Academy Awards, we should see them in the theater. But when I go to RottenTomatoes.com and most of the reviews amount to "painful to watch" but still recommend it, I know what to expect... screw that!

Well, DUH! That's precisely why a rom/com fluffy actor like Matthew McConaughey won BEST ACTOR. He made a GLAAD approved film. C'mon, he's the same lame actor from "Failure to Launch".

Obviously there's a reason (other than my laziness) that I'm not a captain of industry like the Koch brothers. Because if a short-eyed lackwit like Reid called me out, I'd arrange for a personal appointment to discuss matters with him. And then, in his office, introduce his colon to the business end of a Louisville Slugger.
Honestly, what's the worst that can happen? What jury is going to convict you for bashing a clown like Reid?

I liked the movie. There was some great shots of the triple expansion steam engine and a lot of views of the ship, many done with CGI, generated using the then innovative method of large numbers of PCs running Linux in a Beowulf array. And Kate Winslet's boobs. And Leonardo DiCaprio dies. And don't tell me you didn't get a kick out of that guy bouncing off the propeller.

Brian Kilmeade of Fox News noted that the Syrian rebels whom Barack Obama and McCain want to aid militarily were shouting “Allahu akbar! Allahu akbar!” as rockets hit Syrian government offices.
That incensed McCain, who shot back: “Would you have a problem with an American or Christians saying ‘thank God? Thank God?’ That’s what they’re saying. Come on! Of course they’re Muslims, but they’re moderates and I guarantee you they are moderates.”

"12 Years A Slave" is one of those “important subject” films that people will call a “difficult watch” while praising it, implying that you should sit through it to better yourself even if you don’t enjoy the experience. Not surprisingly, a few members of the Academy privately admitted to the LA Times that they wanted to reward the eventual Best Picture winner for its importance (and congratulate themselves for doing so), while foregoing the possible trauma of actually watching it.
See, this is why I don't know why "Dallas Buyers Club" didn't win Best Picture, since these days "Teh Ghey" trumps "Black" almost every time. I've got to figure that it's because "12 Years a Slave" overtly mentions slavery in the title, whereas "DBC" doesn't sound like it has anything to do with the LGBTBBQ Mafia, so the trained seals of the Hollywood elite decided to clap their flippers for the obvious choice.
And will someone PLEASE explain to me why "12 Years a Slave" is considered an "important subject" movie? Why? Because it expresses the opinion that slavery is bad? Yes, thank you, we know. How about you try showing it for free on the street in Islamic countries that still practice slavery; then maybe I'll be more open to calling it "important."

Actually Dallas Buyers Club is very controversial among certain portions of The Professional Gay Left because how dare anyone make a movie about AIDS that involves a straight guy? How dare you do that!
Ah, that would explain it then. I was not factoring "angry LGBTBBQ Mafia wing" into my Best Picture calculus.
Also, and oh it burns, it burns so much that I have to agree with this, there is a lot of flack for having a trans character in it because obvious pandering Oscar bait is obvious and pandering. I agree that Leto was amazing in the role but c'mon. Obvious pandering Oscar bait. It's in the same category as McConaughey losing all that weight for the role. Want an Oscar? Serious Subject Matter + Physical Transformation = Nomination.
Here I must diverge from you, oh my queen. Yes it's obvious Oscar bait, but if that's what's going to get people into a tizzy then they might as well just close up shop and cancel the Oscars from hereon out. "Obvious Oscar bait" is de rigeur in Hollywood. Charlize Theron in Monster? Oscar bait. Nicole Kidman in that movie where she had a false nose? Oscar bait. Hell, putting Meryl Streep in your movie is Obvious Oscar bait at this point, since she's nominated every frigging year, or so it seems.

In the otherwise forgettable movie, "Bad Teacher", there is a hilarious part where Justin Timberlake is going on and on about how bad slavery is and how he wishes he had a time machine so he could go back and tell people that.

"Want to win an Oscar? Just make a Very Important Film about an Approved Topic and watch the accolades roll in."
Wargaming has also been infected with this same stupidity. The Wargamer.com Games of the Year for 2014 had "Freedom - the Underground Railroad" game win in the Board Game category because, Get This, "it is one of the most important games to come out in the last few years and Academy Games deserves praise for having the intestinal fortitude to bring this out!" and it was apparently "A game that deals with what is still a difficult subject for many."
What bollocks......

I absentmindedly took another bite of my pop tart, staring at her and wondering what her deal was, and suddenly her eyes kinda glossed over she lowered her finger, and turned and walked away as if nothing had happened....
