UAW's New Complaint to the NRLB: Senators Should Not Be Permitted to Express Their Views on Unionization
— Ace

Sure, why not.

Is this America?

Just over two weeks ago, an election was held at the Volkswagen plant in my hometown of Chattanooga to determine whether the United Auto Workers would represent the workers there. UAW operatives spent two years inside the plant working to organize it. Initially, the UAW tried to take away the workers' right to vote and force its way in through "card check," an attempt to entrench the union without a democratic election. Fortunately, the company insisted on a secret ballot for its employees. They voted on Feb. 14 not to organize, although in the week leading up to the vote, only the UAW was allowed inside the plant, where the union was given an audience with the workers on company time....

On Feb. 14, the workers made their voices heard, with 53% voting against allowing the UAW to represent them. I believe that the workers understood that they were nothing more than dollar signs for the UAW. Obviously, I could not have been happier for the Volkswagen employees, for the community and for Tennessee.

Unfortunately, the UAW has chosen to ignore the employees' decision and has filed objections with the National Labor Relations Board, charging that elected officials like me should not be allowed to make public comments expressing our opinion and sharing information with our constituents. It is telling that the UAW complaint does not mention President Obama's public statement urging the employees to vote for the union.

If the National Labor Relations Board upholds these objections, it would be an unprecedented assault on free speech.

The science is settled. The debate is over. And Eric, I won.

6 Jeepers, if you are employed by a auto maker you would have to be stupid to invite Union representation. Oddly, non-union votes matched Obama tallies.

Seriously folks, one of these days real soon, we're going to see some new  term come down the pike.

Something like "misvote," or "erroneous election result."

Defined as situations where the result is not as they desire, after which they will lodge complaints as to why the result was not what they deemed good and proper.  Thus, to be overturned.  Out of fairness.

It's coming.

43 Well, so far anyway the right of a congresscritter to say whatever he wants while on the Senate/House floor hasn't been reduced. It's really the most fundamental of all free speech: free speech of representatives during debate (it has been nibbled away at in the UK, sadly). So at least one place where a senator can make "public comments" will remain as long as we have even the tattered remnants of democracy, or a constitution.

47 According to a post by a commenter at Legal Insurrection, the statements by the VW board member who represents German unions to the effect that VW may not expand or locate new facilities in Tennessee because of the workers turning down the union constitutes a violation of section 8 of the Labor Relations Act - management cannot threaten such things to influence a union election.  Of course, the usual case is that management would make such threats to discourage the union vote, this is the opposite, so Obama will decree it unpleasant and therefore unenforceable.

If the state has a loose recall process, that's one thing.  If elections will not be certified if, say, the powers that be decide there was too much influence from somebody/something they deem to have intentionally misled the peeples....

Democrat Bob Beckel Smears VW; Blames Union Defeat in TN on Hitler and the Nazis

Bob Beckel: Volkswagen has the kind of unionization (in Germany) it does because VW had a long, storied history with Hitler and the Nazis.

Bill Hemmer and Andrea Tantaros: Ah, come on!

Hemmer: “We don’t have enough time.”

Beckel: “See, that’s the problem. That’s the problem. You know, you can’t raise these things because history dictates a lot of things. If you don’t think that Volkswagen had a long, storied history with the Nazis, it’s the reason they got unionized in Germany when the Americans took over.

Tantaros: “Bob, Volkswagen did not have to invite UAW to the table and have conversation, and they did, and they left it up to the workers. Leave it at that.”

Problem: no VW member is quoted as such on the record. It was Sen. Corker that said:

"he has talked to VW leaders numerous times and “there’s not a push by the executive leadership or the board toward the UAW.”

“I know for a fact that at the highest levels of VW, they’re aware that if the UAW became involved in the plant, it would be a negative for the future economic growth of our state,” he said."

It's heresay.

UAW is bitching about Corker not VW from what was reported last month. It's a stretch to think he's interfering with the negotiations when he spoke to a newsreporter on the matter.

110 I frequently ask the guys in our plant why they are in the union. (Texas is a RTW state and joining the union is optional) The most frequent answer is, "well they protect us." "From what?" "Well we can't get fired and our salaries are protected" "And the guys who aren't in the union, and all of us non-union employees have the same protection because of state law yet we don't have money taken out of our paycheck for it." Then they don't know what to say. But they continue paying those dues because they swear they're getting something extra. Fools.

To be precise: Cities are almost all now liberal, and rural areas are all now conservative. This is true in the north, the south, the coasts and the interior. Question: what was the name of the author or of the essay? Or where did it appear? Any clue appreciated.

152 Looks like UAW took a page from McCain's campaign finance reform UNCONSTITUTIONAL law. Obviously, unions need as much cleansing of leadership as each major political party does. Wash out their mouths with soap. Too much of a good thing; and everyone involved taking more than the original cooperative arrangement between members/leaders. Always demanding MORE! Applies to employers as well. Obama's I Won America cancelled contract law #1 agenda achievement. A "safety net" does not guarantee quality of workmanship. But all said and done, without some organization, it isn't as if employees can count on labor laws being enforced for worker safety, etc., when construction or mining interests cut costs at the loss of safety measures. I reference the dead construction workers in the Southwestern right to work States, some buried alive and some fallen from collapsed scaffolding. Sure, the safety regulations are on the books. But where's the law and code enforcement? AWOL. And without a labor organization to help pay legal fees, how is a laborer (family) to sue big business' lawyers successfully for injuries, dismemberment (death)?

157 I can give you the inside skinny on the Aztek. Pontian Division needed a vehicle to increase its appeal to the young. The Aztek was designed as a go anywhere car appealing to the young and free and was very well received as a concept at the shows. When it came time to put the idea into production the bean counters entered the picture and demanded that the concept be built on an existing mini van platform. This caused the proportions to get tall and narrow. It truly was a do or die moment for GM and Pontiac and they decided to try and maximize the profits and ended up failing miserably.

The Type 181 shared a wider pan with the Type 141 Karmann Ghia.  The outer body was similar but with diffrerences beyond things like safety bumpers, different front fenders, and larger taillights.  The WWII version hood was flat and spare tire sat on it, Type 181 the hood was recessed so the spare tire did not block the view as much.  Internally 12V electrical system, synchro transmission, and a 1600cc motor.

179 Orlando Sentinel -- According to the petition, Lolita Grayson was preparing to take the couple's two youngest children to a play date when Alan Grayson "showed up, unannounced," and asked to speak to her inside. After she refused, retrieved his mail and asked him to leave, Alan Grayson "then deliberately and with force pushed [Lolita Grayson] very hard against the front door, causing [her] to fall to the ground as a result," the petition states. She told her husband not to touch her, then pushed him in the face and kneed him in the stomach "in order to protect and defend herself," before calling 911, her petition says. As she was talking to the operator, Alan Grayson told his wife, in the presence of their children, that she "would receive nothing" in their divorce and would be left "in the gutter," the petition states. Photos filed by Lolita Grayson's attorneys with the petition show large bruises to her left leg and left shoulder. Her complaint alleges that, "from time to time" in the past, her husband "has battered [her] and the parties' minor children," though she has not previously sought an injunction against him. The petition says she now fears for her safety, citing the latest incident and his "history of physical violence toward" her.

The NLRB will uphold the UAW's objections, free speech be damned. For one thing, the NLRB's board members have been making technically illegal decisions ever since Obama appointed two of them during what he claimed was a Senate recess but wasn't a Senate recess. Thus, a majority on the NLRB board is beholden to Obama; they're his people. The UAW (and other unions) are Obama's biggest cash cows.  Those damned Tennessee workers will vote again and they'll keep voting until they get it right and they'll like it.

My late maternal grandfather was a UAW man for 35 years. He loved his union and his job at Chrysler. I think he'd think that push for card check was un-American. He hated communists and communism yet Bob King, current (and soon to retire) UAW President, is a publicly professed Marxist-socialist. That spinning sound you hear is my grandfather in his grave.

Strange, we don't hear the term 'un-American' used much any more, maybe because we've lost sight of who and what we are as a people. Until we get it together, two-bit bullies like Putin will push us all over the playground.

The newly discovered asteroid, called 2014 DX110, will hurtle between the moon and Earth on Wednesday. DX110 will pass an estimated 217,000 miles from Earth. That's approximately nine-tenths of the distance between the moon and Earth. The asteroid is an estimated 45 to 130 feet across. 210 Chipotle Inc. is warning investors that extreme weather events “associated with global climate change” might eventually affect the availability of some of its ingredients. If availability is limited, prices will rise — and Chipotle isn’t sure it’s willing to pay. “Increasing weather volatility or other long-term changes in global weather patterns, including any changes associated with global climate change, could have a significant impact on the price or availability of some of our ingredients,” the popular chain, whose Sofritas vegan tofu dish recently went national, said in its annual report released last month. “In the event of cost increases with respect to one or more of our raw ingredients we may choose to temporarily suspend serving menu items, such as guacamole or one or more of our salsas, rather than paying the increased cost for the ingredients.”

Near the end of The Revolt Against the Masses, to bring it full circle with the start of the book, you write that, “Sinclair LewisÂ’s 1920s never went away.” Do you see this cycle of punitive thinking ever coming to a conclusion in the future? And if so, how? MR. SIEGEL: ItÂ’s funny you would say that. ItÂ’s exactly whatÂ’s on my mind, that itÂ’s important that the next president, whoever he or she will be, recognize that the country is deeply polarized between the metropolitan populations and the rest of the country. And any attempt to create a new alignment ‑‑ excuse me, a new realignment which Bush tried, and is at fault for this, and Obama tried, and is also at fault, is going to fail. We have to govern in the future with a recognition of our differences and the fact that those differences are not going to be overcome. So we have to figure out a way to give more power to the states, to allow states and localities to go their own way. Just as many localities are now saying no to marijuana, other states and localities will say yes to it, we have to have a kind of moral pluralism in the country, or else weÂ’re going to con ‑‑ weÂ’ll continue fighting over the Scopes Trial. MR. DRISCOLL: This is Ed Driscoll and weÂ’ve been talking today with Fred Siegel, the author of The Revolt Against the Masses: How Liberalism Has Undermined the Middle Class. ItÂ’s published by Encounter Books, and available from Amazon.com and your local bookstore. And Fred, good luck with the new book, and thanks once again for stopping by PJM Media.com today. MR. 263 WashExaminer The effects of climate change are "threat multipliers" that will force the Pentagon to rethink how it engages in training, missions and humanitarian aid around the world, the Defense Department said Tuesday in its Quadrennial Defense Review. The review, released every four years, steps up calls made to address climate change in the last version. It noted climate change would "aggravate stressors" such as "poverty, environmental degradation, political instability and social tensions — conditions that can enable terrorist activity and other forms of violence." Curbing greenhouse gas emissions is tantamount to alleviating resource competition and land, home, and infrastructure destruction caused by extreme weather that has been associated with climate change, the review said. That also could affect the military's installations and operations, it added. "The department’s operational readiness hinges on unimpeded access to land, air, and sea training and test space," the review said. "Consequently, we will complete a comprehensive assessment of all installations to assess the potential impacts of climate change on our missions and operational resiliency, and develop and implement plans to adapt as required." The review said investments in energy efficiency, renewable energy and water security would help mitigate some of the challenges presented by climate change.

251...I'm pretty sure this how it played out in the [Chipotle] boardroom:

"We've got to drop employees due to ObamaCare. But we have to figure out how to do it and be able to certify that they weren't let go because of ObamaCare."

"Come up with some cockamamie global warming shit to explain it."

Thank you. I was thinking the same thing.

I wonder what other 'acceptable excuses' companies will come up with to provide cover for their Ocare layoffs...

284 "263 WashExaminer The effects of climate change are "threat multipliers" that will force the Pentagon to rethink how it engages in training, missions and humanitarian aid around the world, the Defense Department said Tuesday in its Quadrennial Defense Review. 290 Baby, I know you from a long, long time ago. A bunch of us go back a long time ago to the earliest days of that brand new invention known as a 'blog'. I'm sure the NSA has pics of us, taken surreptitiously from our own built in cameras, posted on some blackboard somewhere. My list of internet aliases must be about ten pages long. I recognize peeps here at AoS from long ago, from other places, with the same or similar nics and am pleased they haven't given up the fight.

295 210 Chipotle Inc. is warning investors that extreme weather events “associated with global climate change” might eventually affect the availability of some of its ingredients. “In the event of cost increases with respect to one or more of our raw ingredients we may choose to temporarily suspend serving menu items, such as guacamole or one or more of our salsas, rather than paying the increased cost for the ingredients.” Posted by: Speedy Gonzales at March 04, 2014 05:42 PM (e8kgV) So much bullshit on their part. You know what happens when there is a shortage of there preferred specially raised steak? They put up a piece of paper saying that because of supply issues they are using conventionally raised beef. These assholes are just using it for an excuse to increase their prices from inflation. Subway raises their prices too. You don't see them offering excuses as to why.

298 @263 This drives me nuts because the policies the govt enforces in the name of global climate change are a threat to national security. Cases in point - blocking the keystone pipeline, tightening EPA regs to the point of forcing coal plants to close.

302 This is not surprising.  When Conservative types lose elections, they lick their wounds and vow to do better next time.  When Liberals lose, there's Something Wrong!  The election was fixed/rigged/wrong/broken!  Losing is not an option for them.  Do whatever it takes to have another election to get the Correct result!  Doesn't anybody remember "dangling chads"?
