Does the Internet Make You Dumberer: A Kintinuing Ceres

I kind of think this must be true, inasmuch as we are constantly retraining our brain to perform in whatever environment we find ourselves in.

We've been in a digital environment for a long time now. There must be some consequences of that, right?

Claire Handscombe has a commitment problem online. Like a lot of Web surfers, she clicks on links posted on social networks, reads a few sentences, looks for exciting words, and then grows restless, scampering off to the next page she probably wonÂ’t commit to.

“I give it a few seconds — not even minutes — and then I’m moving again,” says Handscombe, a 35-year-old graduate student in creative writing at American University.

But itÂ’s not just online anymore. She finds herself behaving the same way with a novel.

“It’s like your eyes are passing over the words but you’re not taking in what they say,” she confessed. “When I realize what’s happening, I have to go back and read again and again.”

Wolf, one of the world’s foremost experts on the study of reading, was startled last year to discover her brain was apparently adapting, too. After a day of scrolling through the Web and hundreds of e-mails, she sat down one evening to read Hermann Hesse’s “The Glass Bead Game.”

“I’m not kidding: I couldn’t do it,” she said. “It was torture getting through the first page. I couldn’t force myself to slow down so that I wasn’t skimming, picking out key words, organizing my eye movements to generate the most information at the highest speed. I was so disgusted with myself.”

I find that happens to me a lot. I have trouble reading more than a five or six pages of a novel at a time (unless it's really compelling).

I think my brain is looking for links to click on.

17 This is the story of my life. The internet does make it worse for me, medicated or not, but reading without caffeine or adderall was always like this. I always used to read something three or four times, in bits and pieces because my brain would wander, and find something I'd missed each time. I literally thought this was just how most people read for the longest time.

31 I have always been a very fast reader. Fast readers naturally skim for key words and concepts. If you are trying to increase your reading speed, that's what they teach you to do. I think that with the internet, people are reading more than ever, and faster, but in short bursts Its just a different way of processing. Fast food vs a gourmet meal.

My guess is most people don't read enough books to offset the internet change to their reading habits. But I'm not sure it's a bad thing - authors used to get paid by the word, so they'd take the long way to get to their point a lot of times. The internet is a highly competitive environment and so writing has become streamlined to convey thought quickly.

What I mean is that I read everything (books, assignments, magazines) the way described (skimming, getting restless, needing to read it over to understand) before I got my ADHD treated. 44 I do a lot of work regarding the brain and accelerated learning. It's my hobby.

A few years ago, when I started, I had the worst attention span simply because of an undisciplined mind which was not helped by technology - constant channel flipping, continually pushing the refresh button on smart military blogs to catch the newest comments, etc.

I started simple concentration exercises, 3 sets of 3, starting at about a minute each and building up to 20 minutes a rep. Three entire hours.

On a cheap computer chess game, I suddenly jumped from struggling at level 2 to beating the highest level 10 playing black. The hours doing mental training pay off in increased productivity and better ideas.

When you are forcing your eyes to stare at a lighted screen...it's sort of natural that they would 'revolt' on you after a while.

 

Mine do.

This is why I have resisted the urge to go with E-books.

 

I also enjoy the tactile sensation of touching and turning the paper pages.

Not sure why...I just do.

62 For my part, I am not that big a reader of fiction. A good history book, or even a so-so history book about a topic I love though? That shit'll absorb me for hours. The WWW is mostly like corn chips, and a good book is like a porterhouse. I will say, though, that I have slowed down in my dead-tree reading because e-books are so much easier to go through, especially while on an airplane or while eating.

On the upside, since the internet is interactive, we're probably writing more than ever.  20 or 30 years ago writing a letter was a big thing, now you dash off the equivalent amount of text just replying to a random post that you wanted to riff on.

From what I've read here, the lighting is not necessarily an unmitigated plus. My only beef with it is that I can enlarge the text, but not the graphics, so it's tough to see the details on, say, maps without fetching my magnifying glass.

100 Among the many, many nasty schisms developing in the contemporary USA-SSR is an age divide in the workplace.

On the one hand you have frankly brutally ageist firms like Google and Faceplantbook that try to hire at age twenty and start easing people out the door by age thirty-five, because as Fuckerberg says, "Younger people are just smarter."

And then on the other hand you've got established firms with older employees who are being asked to deal with Generation Special Snowflake, and finding a major deficit in stick-to-it-iveness and concentration. Plus inability to accept constructive criticism. And insistence upon a "high quality of life", which near I can figure means being able to start a water gun fight in the office at any random time of the working day without getting fired for it.

This will all work out as well in the end as everything else in the USA-SSR. Which is to say, in disaster.

113 I had been a "slow-absorber" for years.  Ironically, I now read things more slowly on the internet, so as to absorb them. 

I don't know if it was called "A.D.D." back when I was in school, but I found myself re-reading paragraphs over and over again until they 'zorbed.

I also had problems with the minutia in math class.  I knew the formulas and equations, but my mind would hang-up on endgame 7+5, or 8x9 and I would actually make hash-marks and dots on the side of the page to get me out of the "rut".

I find that the internet allows me a "cut&paste/bookmark" -mentality, where I can look back at "things of note" and rewrite them in my own "voice".

Books have since "slowed down" for me, but I cannot say that it is due to the internet, (in inverse relation to the article), and not "growing out of" whatever "Eyes-Too-Fast-Comprehension-Lag" I had.  It wasn't the lack of understanding, mind you, (I had an unabridged dictionary in my locker and a small one on my person);  it was just seeing "words" instead of meanings.

I still believe in Writing Things Down.  It is at my core.  I never have fewer than thirty items, written in my own hand, tacked to the wall.  My paper calendar and datebook look like Shorthand War & Peace.

If I typed something, every time I had a damn thought?  All my posts would look like this one.  TL;DNR.

I read once, pre-intenet, that a sign of maturity was realizing you didn't have to finish ever book you started.

Read a few hundred books, especially any books about the writing process, and you become such a critical reader that you can't just ignore the flaws in most writing and can't be bothered with that book or writer.

Scan, evaluate, read or flee.

226 My reading habits have changed but I don't think it's because of web surfing. It was because I had kids... reading two novels in a day and not getting off the couch for the whole time, maybe a whole weekend... that happened in college. It didn't happen with small children. So I re-read books I'd already read because I could pick them up and put them down and not care that I couldn't find out what happened next because I already knew. And then my eyes started going... and I didn't realize it for a few years. (Darn you 40!) But even when I got reading glasses I still re-read books or read the fluffiest romances (by the truck-load) because life is stressful enough. And the last few years have been non-stop stress, worry about money, teenagers, whatever... I have books by authors that I think are fabulous and I don't read them because reading them is *work*. I look longingly at the Monster Hunter novel I got at the library and I think... do I have a day to sit and just do that and really enjoy it, and read it through to the end and get immersed? And I think that no... I don't. And do I want to read it in tiny bits? No... I don't. So I pick up another fluffy romance and plow through it... one after another... re-reading a lot, because I don't want to commit. True. I just don't think it has anything to do with web surfing habits because I *do* read whole books cover to cover... just not anything that requires anything from me.

237 FYI browser seekers. Pale Moon is Firefox streamlined and rebranded. I've been using Pale Moon for about two years; it's a Mozilla engine. You don't get off the Mozilla bandwagon that easily, sadly enough. I'm returning to Opera which uses chromium as the foundation, but leaving Pale Moon has been a bit of a trial. It was a fine browser particularly with all the add-ons. Good news, though. The latest Opera has some good add-ons and the development team is reincorporating many tools as the latest version is built up.

I had always wanted to be the kind of person who went to the theater, but it was so boring! I realized that I was so used to watching tv and movies, with close-ups, fast scene changes, different camera perspectives etc, that I just couldn't stay interested looking at the same stage and with the same perspective for two-three hours. By the third year I was used to it and I have been enjoying the plays ever since, but it was hard to realize that tv and film ruined the theater for a while.

I figured that was first, as I was no good if I had a stroke. Second, I met my legal team today, and they seem good. Third, I interview again in early May for a new job, which I pray will help sort out this mess. The funny thing is this: I told my I attorney that I wanted no contact with her in any way, amongst other stuff. I got an e-mail from my team addressing some of the the other stuff this afternoon! But! She tried to call my mom after I had my lawyer contact hers! She seems to be reaching out (to the wrong people) and regretting her decisions. I cannot wrap my brain around it, or this whole situation.

354 I think the internet is a tool. It's like an encyclopedia, only much faster. It depends on how one uses it. If one just copies out of the encyclopedia, then they are not going to get smarter. If one uses it for research and forms their own opinions, they can process exponentially more information. That doesn't mean they are smarter, but that they have more information flowing through their consciousness and are capable of drawing more and more interesting connections and conclusions. I do not have the problem with skipping over words when I read novels. Not in the slightest. I believe the internet has increased my ability to concentrate.

387 I could see a bit of myself in that, I suppose but I've long had an aversion to videos over a transcript on the internet. A.) It is "faster" for me to read it than suffer through how long it takes people to saaay things but I've been that way since I was about 12. I don't think it is about "scanning for key phrases" either. Just this morning I decided to read the transcript of Dave Barry's interview on PJM for this very reason. B.) Doesn't apply to live conversations in which I may or may not be participating, of course but I generally don't care for hyperlinks to podcasts* or You-Tube videos but I am old. C.) I feel like I can engage better w/ the written word without all the (to me) distractions. Some web-authors that I favor include Hyper-links but I treat them like annotations. I will read the piece entire and then decide whether or not to follow up on a link, or not. Other people process info differently, I know. *I do make time to listen to 2 or 3 different podcasts per week including and especially the AoSHQ podcast but that's an entirely different way of paying attention. (I usually turn off all the lights, lock down the computer and pray that I will be able to sleep.)

I wish I could give you more advice than this, but here it goes:

#1.  Love is overwhelming.
#2.  Being spurned leads to irrational decisions.
#3.  She started a Legal Process.
#4.  The faster you can shut emotion out of it, the better-off you'll be.
#5.  If you're a "Good Guy", they'll always wonder.  It is equivalent to "Drunk-Dialing" for a guy.

Caveat #1.  I've never been "In Love".  I've been too busy.  "Infatuation/Admiration" is different than Love.
Caveat #2.  I've never been Married, nor gone through a divorce.  I'm "clean".
Caveat #3.  I'm not a lawyer.

Those are three big ones, but the advice is pure.

Know what you know and own it.  There are certain "Deal-Breakers" that are non-negotiable.  Find those and you'll find yourself.

439 It doesn't help that colleges are flat out TELLING students that skimming is a perfectly acceptable form of research. I started taking classes for a second degree and it was right there in the syllabus for the first course. Skimming is not only acknowledged but recommended. Now granted most student were going do it anyway, but at least pretend that you expect some academic rigor in your class.

440 Interesting. Hyperactive growing up (and probably remain so), I had to train myself to sit/read for long spells of time. I loved reading, just...squirrel! Thus, the internet reading vs. book reading has not changed my approach or technique one iota. That said, I read much, much more, and with greater speed, on my Kindle than I do with paper books. Now, internet reading is as she says it is, I'm skimming unless I'm really interested. The only downside to paper books is the lack of a dictionary that I can simply point and get the definition. That's a muscle memory/brain activity I can't let go of yet.

Anyway - I was reading a book the other evening and came across a word I was unfamiliar with - I actually HIT the word with my finger and then remembered -"oh, yeah ... this is a B.O.O.K not a touchscreen ..." YIKES.
