Interpol: More "Suspect Passports" On Malaysian Flight Than At First Thought
— Ace

This is all via @rdbrewer4.

An Interpol spokeswoman said a check of all documents used to board the plane had revealed more "suspect passports" that were being further investigated.

In addition to the two they've Reuters:

"The fact that we are unable to find any debris so far appears to indicate that the aircraft is likely to have disintegrated at around 35,000 feet," said the source, who is involved in the preliminary investigations in Malaysia.

More of the story (most of which you probably already know) here.

The state-run Thanh Nien newspaper cited Lt. Gen. Vo Van Tuan, deputy chief of staff of Vietnam's army, as saying searchers in a low-flying plane had spotted an object suspected of being a door from the missing jet. It was found in waters about 56 miles south of Tho Chu island, in the same area where oil slicks were spotted Saturday.

"From this object, hopefully (we) will find the missing plane," Tuan said. Thanh Nien said two ships from the maritime police were heading to the site.

An authority told Reuters that it was too dark to be certain the object was part of the missing plane, and that more aircraft would be dispatched to investigate the site in waters off southern Vietnam in the morning.

Possibly a terrorist attack, though so little is known now this is speculation:

[A] former intelligence official told Fox News that the information about stolen passports from two adjacent European countries, combined with recent warnings for flights to the United States about the risk of possible shoe bomb attacks, is concerning

Those passports were from Italy and Austria, and were stolen in Thailand.

As you know, as of this moment, the plane is flat-out vanished. As remarkable as it seems, there is a precedent for that:

There is a precedent for a modern jetliner to fall from the sky while "in the cruise" and lie hidden for months, according to CNN aviation correspondent Richard Quest.

On June 1, 2009, Air France Flight 447 was en route from Rio De Janeiro to Paris when communications ended suddenly from the Airbus A330, another state-of-the-art aircraft.

It took four searches over the course of nearly two years to locate the bulk of flight 447's wreckage and the majority of the 228 bodies in a mountain range deep under the ocean. It took even longer to find the cause of the disaster.

A plane is at its safest point when it is cruising.

1 Ace,

I read in the last day that if the plane simply disintegrated at altitude that there would be at least some debris field, that the thousands of small, light, often floatable objects in a plane would not sink immediately.

But...that if it simply crashed, intact, into the ocean, that there would be much less chance of debris.

It makes sense.

2 "Possibly a terrorist attack" ya think?

3 If the debris is in the deep ocean, then there's a strong probability it will never be found.

Wouldn't there be a debris field if there was massive mechanical failure and the plane slammed into the ocean as well?

4 "The fact that we are unable to find any debris so far appears to indicate that the aircraft is likely to have disintegrated at around 35,000 feet," said the source, who is involved in the preliminary investigations in Malaysia. How's that?

5 Wouldn't there be a debris field if there was massive mechanical failure and the plane slammed into the ocean as well?

Yeah, but it would be all in one place. If it happened at altitude, it would be scattered over a much wider area.

7 If it was terrorists, you'd think they'd have been loudly claiming responsibility already. And the plane was filled with Chinese passengers. China is not known for restraint or attention to legal niceties; making them a terror target is asking for some serious fucking-up. Possible theory: there were terrorists on board, with some kind of bomb, but were planning to change planes in Beijing to a US flight and go boom. Something went wrong, the bomb went off too soon, and now the terrorists are keeping their mouths shut for fear both of pissing off the Chinese and of looking like a bunch of incompetent nitwits.

8 There's floaty bits in all downed aircraft: seats, bodies, etc etc.

Posted by: tangonine at March 09, 2014 02:10 PM (x3YFz)

9 I read the exact opposite -- that a crash produces a debris field but a mid-air disintegration doesn't, the bits and pieces get so spread out that it's hard to find them. The whole debris field only gets seen cause it's so much stuff floating together. There's no doubt tons of bits floating in the ocean. But the ocean is really, really big

So, contra what would be expected, hiring a Thai tranny hooker means that the terrorists have already won. Next time, buy American.

19 Terrorists don't seem to claim credit like they used to in the 80s and 90s. I'm guessing it's because States (like US, Russia, China, etc) are so much better at tracking down communications. So anybody who claims credit, no matter how anonymously they try to do it, has the wrath of God brought down on them so quick that it's no longer worth trying to take credit.

21 So the terrorists use false identity to board the aircraft and conceal their real identity?

Or the targets of the attack were traveling under false documents in and attempt to conceal their true identity?

Or people in third world countries routinely travel on stolen documents because. . .and doing so confuse the issue of who were the attackers and who were the targets.

Or it was just a drug hit, contract killing.

There are also reports of Chinese calling their loved ones, and the phones just ringing.

That seems odd to me. Shouldn't the calls just go to voice mail?

48 I saw this afternoon that the two suspect passengers bought their tickets at the same travel agency, at the same time, and paid cash. As far as not claiming responsibility, if I was a sinister fuck I'd think that's almost more terrifying to the masses than claiming responsibility right away. Drop a few planes without a trace, without warning, without anyone even knowing what happened, and only claim responsibility when the public is all worked up and they might take what you say a little more seriously. From everything I've heard, the plane disappeared from radar at altitude. Disappearing from radio contact is one thing because you'd still show up on radar. Disappearing from both is troubling.

Zaharie Ahmad Shah, a 53-year-old Malaysian, has been named as the pilot of the Malaysian Airlines plane that went missing on Saturday. Shah joined the airline in 1981 and has 18,365 hours of experience, the airline said in a statement.

The first officer on board was another Malaysian, Fariq Ab Hamid, 27 years old. He joined the airline in 2007 and has 2,763 hours of experience.

66 Of course, the other possibility is that the passport thing happens all the time (think drug trafficking or sex trade), and this is all just a really strange coincidence. It's not common for planes to break up, but it can happen - it's possible that there was just a catastrophic mechanical failure; even the safest modes of transportation can have the odd failure. I just hope - for the passengers' sake - that whatever happened was quick and they didn't have time to realize what was going on.

I understand that he has a history and seems fine.  However, the link doesn't prove anything.  How long was the Egyptian pilot who augured his plane into the ocean a pilot?  I gather from his name that the pilot here may be Muslim.  Again, doesn't prove anything, but if you thought the pilot might be responsible, which religion would you consider first?

They said it was impossible that Zaharie would be in any way to blame for the disappearance of the aircraft.

Clearly what they mean here is that he didn't screw up and inadvertently cause the plane to crash.  That doesn't mean he didn't do it deliberately.   Again, doesn't prove anything.

110 Re: showing up on radar--only military actually paint targets with radio waves. Modern ATC "radar" is just a receiver that tracks signals broadcast from a transponder on the aircraft, like an IFF beacon. It is a passive listening device, it doesn't go looking for moving objects. I think they have battery backups, but probably a few grams of plastic explosives in the right place could take out the radio and transponder instantly. A few hundred grams could kill the cabin crew instantly, or open the cockpit to ambient atmosphere which would ruin everyone's day real quick at 500+ knots, temperatures around -40 and air pressure less than half of what it is at 10K feet of altitude.

137 Actually the Air France flight plunged into the water and some debris was found floating including part of the tail.  The cause of the crash, two co-pilots not knowing the systems, fighting each other, and a captain not asserting control - that took awhile to determine.

The cartels in Colombia one time did blow up a passenger plane.

Then there is Egypt Air Flt 990 where Gamil kept saying "Allah is in control"

At least one 747 was lost when one of the cargo hatches, the motor actually commanded the latches to disengage in flight with no human command.

142 During the safety lecture that the stewardess gives at the beginning of every flight, they always talk about using your seat cushion as a flotation device.  Now I realize that if an airplane hits the water at 500 mph the result is not going to be a whole lot different from hitting concrete at 500 mph so the usefulness of seat cushion flotation devices is pretty academic but the point that I am finally getting to is that it would seem that if an airplane disassembles, either in the air or upon hitting the ocean surface or 150 feet down when it hits the ocean floor, there ought to be several hundred of those flotation device seat cushions bobbing around on the surface of the ocean.

Yes, the ocean is big but we are talking about hundreds of cushions.

Or is this just a scam?  Are those seat cushions actually designed to drag you to a watery death beneath the waves because the airlines face less legal liability if you are dead than if you survive a plane crash?

147 The safest point in the flight?  Only if you trust computers more than real pilots.   Few pilots today have experience manually flying planes rather than simulators.  The suits running the airlines don't think hands on training can be cost justified.  They also think that policies in which the pilots are to rely on autopilot as much as possible saves the airlines money on fuel.   The short explanation for AF 337 is the entire crew kicked back and relaxed while the electronics system flying the plane flew them into a situation they weren't prepared to get out of.

The 777 is said to have more redundancies built into than the Airbus in the Air France crash.  I've even seen it called idiot proof.  Tell that to the passengers on Asiana 214, which was flown into the ground under perfect landing conditions.  Note too that MAS is a money losing state owned airline.  Maintenance and repairs can be the first place corners get cut.

159 Posted by: Obnoxious A-hole at March 09, 2014 07:23 PM (PD6iL) You're assuming the plane is always going to break up at altitude or nose-dive into the water at near-sonic speed. If the plane has problems and the pilot ditches in the water, like Sullenburger did in New York, the floating seat cushions could indeed be of value. It was a moot point in the Sullenburger case because there were all sorts of small craft on the river to pick people up off the wings before it sunk, but if something like that happened over the open ocean the seat cushions could save a lot of lives.

170 Could have been terrorism, could have been instruments gone wrong in conditions that the pilot couldn't read properly and they ditched unexpectedly. Could have been they hit something big that took out the cabin in a freak accident. Who knows?

171 Here is an example of a plane breaking up in mid-air as it approached 35,000ft.  Some debris was found 45Km from the crash site.  The 747 had suffered a tail strike that damaged the aft pressure bulkhead.  Repairs were not done according to Boeing specifications and stress cracks propagated.

173 I thought they first spotted debris from AF FL447 the day after the crash.

175 BTW when an aircraft plows into something there you would be surprised how quickly things get buried, even on land When I was in the AF one of the things I had to do was advise an Accident Investigation Board. Pilot passed out due to G forces during an exercise and crashed at high speed. Aircraft pulverized, very little to find, even on land

176 My guess it was a bungled hi-jacking attempt. The two terrorists (maybe 4?) managed to get into the cockpit and succeeded in physically disabling one or both the pilot/copilot team. But one of the pilots is still strapped into his seat (maybe even already slain) and falls forward onto the yoke putting the plane into a steep dive. The terrorists, though trained as pilots someplace (as were the 9/11 hi-jackers) had planned to takeover the aircraft and fly it someplace (China?) there to land and make their demands known. But they were unable to regain control as the aircraft continued its dive straight down from 35,000 feet where it crashed into the water.

177 remember that Egypt Air guy that augered into the ocean? Sudden jihadi syndrome If they tried to turn back, maybe they struggled over the aircraft Islamic terrorists got caught planning to attack the KL airport in 2012. This aircraft was out of that airport Plus Thailand is a hot bed of Islamic terrorism now. Wouldn't surprise me No one has claimed responsibility though. If they have, governments in Asia are hushing it up there is no point blowing up a large aircraft packed with people unless you take credit for it or unless there was one particular person on the plane you wanted to kill, and you didn't care who else died with him. That could explain the silence

178 Black box transporters--can they be picked up if underwater? Ultrasonic audio marker that operates for maybe around a month or so before the battery power is exhausted.

179 Getting a passport stolen in Thailand is about as shocking as getting your wallet stolen in Tijuana I wonder how many Ladyboys are traveling on passports under the name of "Hans Gluck"

180 24 So, contra what would be expected, hiring a Thai tranny hooker means that the terrorists have already won. Next time, buy American. When you have cable, you have to call customer service. When you call customer service you get stressed. When you get stressed, you take a vacation in Thailand, When you take a vacation in Thailand you hire a tranny hooker. When you hire a tranny hooker he steals your passport. When your passport gets stolen it gets sold to a terrorist named Abdul. Don't let your passport get sold to a terrorist named Abdul

I wonder how many Ladyboys are traveling on passports under the name of "Hans Blix?"

183 It's China, so it's not like it gives a crap about the U.N.  It outlaws Islam and gives all Muslims 30 days to get out.  Then it treats possession of Islam like Singapore treats possession of drugs.

184 Both pilots have Muslim names. No mayday was radioed.

Just saying it's fishy, that's all. Remember the EgyptAir flight that the pilots suicided? yelling Aloha Snackbar! all the way down? and Egypt tried to cover it up?

Worth looking into.

185 911 started in Kuala Lampur and ended in Frankfurt. While Copenhagen is another favorite destination for the ROP -- love that Scandi welfare! Amsterdam is a smuggling hub. With stolen passports, I think it was a cartel.
