Lena Dunham on Saturday Night Live
— Ace

I saw a bit of this, just because it was so heavily promoted and I figured I should watch it, just as part of my job.

Truth Revolt headlines an article that one sketch featured Dunham "poking fun at the biblical narrative." That's true in a minor way -- the Eden story was handled irreverently, surely -- but the main target of the sketch was not the Eden story, but rather Dunham's screen persona as a narcissistic neurotic. She was playing her "Hannah" role from Girls in the sketch, and reduced everything in the Garden of Eden to her own list of shallow preoccupations. When "Adam" says that she was made from his rib, she objects "That's so sexist!"

When "God" speaks to her at the end, she only wants to ask about whether her publishing deal is still on. Hannah is forever worrying about whether her book will be published.

And of course it poked fun at her reputation for appearing nude at the drop of a hat. I think one "critic" said of the movie, "A lot of nudity... even for Dunham."

(One thing I think Dunham's critics either miss or do not confess often enough is that while Hannah is a neurotic narcissist, Dunham is aware of that fact, and makes Hannah the butt of jokes. That is, there seems to be an unexpressed belief that Dunham endorses all of Hannah's selfish, shallow dopiness, when in fact the show's position is that she is deeply flawed and quite mockable. She's still the hero of the show, don't get me wrong; but George Costanza was often the hero of Seinfeld, without Jerry Seinfeld or Jason Alexander ever being charged with believing that Costanza was the sort of character that people should aspire to be.

That doesn't mean I'm a fan-- I don't watch this show (except inadvertently, or by osmosis, because it gets chattered about a bunch). But it's just wrong to assert that Dunham is championing Hannah as a heroic ideal. Quite the opposite -- Hannah is intended as a deeply flawed comedic loser-hero. I'd say a "female Charlie Brown," but good ol' Chuck was highly ethical and thoughtful, which Hannah, in the main, is not.)

I really don't think that the Eden story was the main target of humor, here. It was the incongruity of seeing pampered, narcissistic, neurotic Hannah in the Garden of Eden, and to some extent about Dunham herself. Irreverent about God and the Bible, sure, but much more about Hollywood's interpretation of Bible stories than about actual Bible stories.

I mean, it's not a funny sketch, certainly. It just references Dunham's most famous role and puts that character in a different context. Meh. But I don't think the target here was the Bible. And if someone is goofing on herself, I give them latitude to goof on other things along the way.

Of course, later in the show, they featured a sketch in which a "male rights activist" was shown to be a loser h8r without troubling themselves to add any actual comedy to the piece. At the end, his out-of-his-league girlfriend tells him to hit the road. Yay, comeuppance for mustache-twirling stereotypes and cult hate objects!

There are so many problems with this that I really don’t want to take the time to parse them all. Suffice it to say that the creepy misogynist who opposes abortion just because he wants to keep women down is the left-wing P.C. equivalent of the equally bogus right-wing P.C. cliché that feminists are shrill, physically unattractive, and driven into their ideology by resentment at their failure to get men. Of course, in the case of every P.C. stereotype (whether it’s the P.C. of the Left or the Right) there are some individuals who conform to that stereotype. There are some pro-life activists who are misogynists who resent women’s equality; there are some pro-choice feminists who are shrill and motivated by resentment against men. But as broad-brush generalizations, both of these are, in my experience spanning almost five decades now, false.

Most readers will at this point expect me to denounce the SNL sketch because it expresses a political opinion different from mine. Nope: That’s totally fine with me. The day I can’t laugh at a joke by Rush Limbaugh or Jon Stewart or P. J. O’Rourke just because I don’t happen to agree with the political point of the particular joke is the day I will have to give up and register myself as “Humorless Person, Class A.” No, what really annoys me about that sketch is that I don’t remember there being any jokes in it. I am, among other things, a feminist and a pro-lifer, and I’m okay with people telling jokes about feminists and pro-lifers. But when you have an attack on any group, and don’t include any actual, you know, jokes, then what you’re left with is not a comedy sketch but merely an act of verbal aggression and ritual humiliation of the unpopular Other (in this case, the men’s-rights anti-abortion guy). As such, it of course deserves my protection from censorship, because I’m a First Amendment absolutist; what it does not deserve is my respect.

I understand that creative people like injecting "messages" important to them into their work, but such a piece has to also stand on its non-"message" merits to be a success. In this piece, there was nothing more than The Message. Girls good, h8rs bad.*

I only watched three or four sketches, to be honest. It just wasn't funny. That's not really Dunham's fault -- the show is never funny, and has not even been intermittently funny for about five or six years now. The only thing I thought was mildly funny (though really in an end-of-the-show weakest-sketches-that-made-the-cut sort of way) was this easy sketch about Bad Rap from Goofy White People. Easy and dumb, and I feel like I've seen this before, but still, if I'm being honest, I kind of smiled.

The show's ratings were down.

I'm really not sure why anyone watches it anymore.

Mildly Funny: This clip isn't from this show, but a previous one hosted by Tina Fey. It goofs on Girls.

Yeah, that's about as good as SNL gets, and it only gets that good once every five episodes.

* I have to say I tuned out of this sketch because it was so lame but I suppose... I suppose it's possible their intent was, possibly, to mock the intolerance of people on the left? I didn't pick up on such a subtle reversal, but who knows, maybe it was just because I was too bored to pay attention.

This is a side issue,   but   it's impossible to be a feminist AND a pro-lifer.   Not if you're using the modern definition of "feminist," which equates to, "Supports    a   woman's right to have as many free abortions as she wants, any time,  without any consequences."

Just saying.

29 Ace, Thanks for watching it for us. I havenÂ’t watched SNL in years and donÂ’t like Girls. I think it is one of the dumbest shows HBO has & I havenÂ’t watched any HBO series since The Sopranos. Showtime series are great. My older brother kept telling me I would like Shameless but I didnÂ’t watch. I had Showtime on earlier this year and it was on & sounded entertaining. I watched all three previous seasons and then started watching this season. ItÂ’s funny & dark. Dexter is another show that I never watched until the end of the 2012 season. I watched all of them on demand & loved it. IÂ’m glad I watched them like that because it was suspenseful and I didnÂ’t have to wait a week for the next one. Ray Donovan & Masters of Sex are very good too.

32 SNL still does good ratings -- even these low Lena ratings are still pretty good. On broadcast TV it got the highest 18-49 ratings. 3.25M viewers. 1% of America. But it's the whole Flattering of the Chattering angle. SNL has a reputation of a show you need to stay up to date with to be part of the "cultural zeitgeist". I haven't purposefully watched in years, but when a sketch goes viral I see it.

33 "Of course, later in the show, they featured a sketch in which a "male rights activist" was shown to be a loser h8r without troubling themselves to add any actual comedy to the piece." Reminds me of the "Gay Civil War Soldiers" sketch they did back during Clinton's term and the implementation of DADT. A little humor here and there, but the last minute or so made no attempt at humor on any level. Not that it was humor that I just didn't find funny, it was just flat out cheerleading Clinton. No jokes, no comedic delivery, nothing but a message.

37 Meh. But I don't think the target here was the Bible. *** I agree. Had it been I would have turned it off instantly. Instead, it was just really, really unfunny. The entire show, with the exception of the opening bit with Neeson, was terribly unfunny. I don't think I laughed even once.

Of course, what that means is that SNL wasn't expecting a very big audience,   because only people who watch "Girls" would give a rat's ass about watching Lena Dunham host the   show.

Only a handful of people watch "Girls" in the first place.   Take that handful, cut it in half (because just watching a show doesn't mean you're going to slavishly follow it's 'star' wherever she goes) and then cut THAT in half    because a lot of people gave up on SNL long ago, and bingo.  You've got shitty ratings for a shitty show that jumped the   political shark ten years ago.

Based on my own personal experience, I'd say most people who call themselves feminists are very unattractive physically.

I don't know about the "resentment at their failure to get men" part.  It seems to me a lot of feminists were weaponized by professors in college.  Not being able to get men is often the result of their mindthoughts and mouthwords afterwards.

76 There are some pro-life activists who are misogynists Except this is illogical. The implication is that they don't want women to have such power, but would allow men to have it. Yet I see no advocacy groups for fathers or husbands deciding if 'their' women can have abortions. We do see lots of abortion groups that rail about overpopulation and people who choose to have mentally retarded babies. In short, the difference between the two sides is extreme abortion people really do like child murder.

I saw a Tweet about this episode I really liked, to the effect of "I DVRed this solely to see The National (the musical guest), NBC please disregard the ratings otherwise".  Musical guests are pretty much the only reason I've gone anywhere near SNL since the last Celebrity Jeopardy aired.

81 One of the silliest aspects of the Left's abortion narrative is that eeeeevil men are desperately trying to make wymennnz have OMG! babies!!!! The fact is that women are more likely than men to be pro-life. My 23 yr old son, who doesn't bother to go to church, has found time to join a pro-life group at his university --- and I know why. Okay, maybe it's not a great place to pick up EASY women, but it's a great place to pick up good-looking girls you'd like to hang out with.

82 the left-wing P.C. equivalent of the equally bogus right-wing P.C. cliché that feminists are shrill, physically unattractive, and driven into their ideology by resentment at their failure to get men. "Equally bogus," yet supported by ample evidence.

Wrong.   Feminists ARE shrill -- every last one of them.   They are, by and large, unattractive, because they deliberately make themselves unattractive so as to "stick it to the patriarchy."  And yes, there are a fair few who preach feminism because they   know they're  too ugly and too    shallow to ever find a man.   Rather than attempting to identify their own character flaws and try to grow as a person, these feminists instead choose to blame their crushing loneliness on the male-dominated world.

Conservatives understand   lefties a shitload better than lefties understand us.  That means our stereotypes of them   are based    on     actual observation and experience    rather than      blithering fever dreams of pathological hatred.

Probably because she doesn't know the entire story. God told adam he was going to make his prefect mate to be his perfect partner in life, one that would honor him and respect him. Adam asked what the cost would be for the perfect soul mate. God informed him it would cost his right eye, an arm, and a leg. I'm really not sure why anyone watches it anymore.

Posted by: Ace at 01:17 PM

Because a) it's "cool" and cool people watch it; and b) a lot people watch it in case it is funny - don't want to miss a culturally important moment.

People watch it out of obligation - either the obligation.  Nobody watches it because it is good.

In fact, going back to the very beginning, it wasn't really that funny ever.  It was funnier, but it was never really a solid show.  It was edgy and new when it first started and had some funny sketches. Usually about 20% of the show was actually funny.  Then, a bunch of its original cast made it big in movies.

It lived off that for years, then had a slight revival with Eddy Murphy, where again, about 15% of any particular show was funny.

But really, what is its competition for that time-slot?  As long as it can keep the cast's salaries down, the show can run in perpetuity and always have ebbs and flows of being "funny".

And, by funny, I mean a few chuckles per show.  Nobody can point to a single episode of SNL that was as consistently funny as, for instance, a decent episode of Seinfeld, or early 30 Rock, or early Modern Family.

But then, if it was easy, everyone would do it.

Sort of on topic...I got XM radio with a new car, which means that I'm listening to Howard Stern again, and he is the best interviewer ever (*nods at Terri Gross, you're good too girl*).

The reason that this is a problem is that he is obsessed with SNL and Lorne Michaels and when he interviews cast members he makes the whole thing sound really important and compelling.  I have to keep reminding myself that every time I accidentally watch it I don't accidentally laugh.

He did the same thing to me last week with Chelsea Handler.  Riotous interview.  I had had had to watch her show.  Which turned out to suck.  Making sucky people interesting is a double edged sword.

I think SNL was legitmately funny more than otherwise during the Will Ferrell/Dana Carvey/adam sandler/chris rock, etc years. There is a reason most of that crew became big names.

I still remember some pretty decent skits about the riots in LA. The other skit show that aired at the same time was always a bit edgier though (what was it called?).

160 Speaking of humor being subjective and all of that, I was pondering Bridesmaids and why some people think its hilarious and others are horrified. At least to me, it's because it's mean natured humiliation. I very much dislike watching people get humiliated and when it seems to be mean, well, count me out. The flip side of that would be The 40 Year Old Virgin which I can only watch in about 10-15 minute bits but is very very funny and it's also clear that these people are friends and do care for each other and it's not mean spirited at all. That makes all the difference in the world. My exception to all of that would be Bad Teacher which I watched based on ace's comments about it and, yes, that is vicious and cruel but it's Cameron Diaz being vicious and cruel to herself. Plus the send up of the Earnest Noble Teacher is brilliant and biting and perfect. Very funny movie. So, to sum up, I miss the land shark.

176 >>>she says the lives as portrayed in Girls are realistic, in her experience. That's the whole point. Perhaps she is not as narcissistic as her character, but I think she is. A perusal of her tweets shows that. Oh I believe she's narcissistic. Hannah is plainly a close version of herself. But one can be aware of one's flaws and spoof them. I saw a clip on the internet of Hannah, forever preoccupied about her stupid book being published, pestering a WIDOW at a FUNERAL about what her husband did with the book before he died -- that is, had he moved on it? What was the schedule? Hannah was played as a narcissistic, self-centered idiot, and a bit cruel besides. The widow shot her down and said something like, "If i promise to look into this, will you promise to leave and never talk to me ever again?" This is obviously a joke at Hannah's expense. Her bad behavior, like Costanza's, is portrayed as human, but *bad* human, and certainly not something to be proud of.

Posted by: MWR, Proud Tea(rrorist) Party Assault Hobbit at March 10, 2014 01:26 PM (4df7R) It seems to me that there are so many sub-types (or 'waves') of feminism that the psychotic man-hating, PIV is rape, yay abortions to six months after birth types get cover from the rational "of course women should vote, own property and get paid equal money for equal work" sort of feminism that LIVs associate with the term.

The problem with Lena Dunham is her belief that people want to see her naked.  They don't.  She wants to believe that she can force people to accept her nudity as "hot" as a better looking female's nudity.  It's not.

218 what I found objectionable about the jewelry party skit, so much so that I fast forwarded through it, and thus all my insights are based on interpolation is that it was typical liberal pinata arguing. So there's a guy, and he shows up and has to defend his beliefs and all he does is squirm (remind anyone of how the GOP dealt with W in 2008?). Right, if I am going to be a man's rights activist, maybe I should be able to deal with a bunch of clucking hens, pecking at me for my beliefs. But to the libs who wrote the sketch, it was all about flaying someone who has no ability to fight back. I mean literally, the character is written to fail. 261 SNL has always had more than it's share of bombs, but they usually had two or three sketches a show (sometimes more) that were damn funny. A few times a year they'd have some that were insanely funny and quotable for decades. Even through the 90s and into the early 00s. But I haven't seen a viral SNL skit that made me laugh in years and I've caught a couple of episodes in the past five years that couldn't even get me to smile.

Dr. Kevin Weeks had just come home from one of the world’s most dangerous corners, only to be hit with the stunning news on the home front, according to The Daily Mail. Weeks was shocked that daughter Miriam Weeks — known as sex kitten Belle Knox in her porn moonlighting — was doing the deed on film so she could help out with Duke’s massive tuition. The doctor and his wife are devout Catholics from Spokane, Wash., who will embrace Miriam no matter what she does, according to family members. “This is a tragedy in the family. The father is one of the best human beings I’ve ever met,” said Amanda Minor, the mother-in-law of Miriam’s brother, Paul. “He is just back from Afghanistan. That's missing the point, which is not that 11:30 is some magical time on the clock where the rules change, it's that the mythical average person watches their local news and then whatever's on immediately after that before falling asleep.  Hence the show second after the news has more leeway in terms of what they can get away with.  Conan could do the Masturbating Bear (who may or may not have been played by Ace) at 11:30/12:30, but probably not at 10:30/11:30.

275 86 63 I haven't watched SNL since Beluchi and friends were on it. Posted by: Nevergiveup at March 10, 2014 01:33 PM (t3UFN) ____________ You missed a lot of good stuff by Will Ferrel, Mike Myers, Chris Rock, Adam Sandler, Jon Lovitz, Dana Carvey....that era (1990ish to 1998ish) was a lot funner than the Belushi era IMO. I wasn't old enough to watch the Belushi era, but the little I have seen in re-runs or online, I dunno, I just don't find it that funny. Could be a generational things I guess. Some comedy only works at a certain time and place. Posted by: Mr. Moo Moo at March 10, 2014 01:35 PM (0LHZx) I've watched SNL since the first season, and even back then, it was hit and miss. They did have shitty musical guests, and they had lots of shitty hosts. There were also a lot of skits that made you sit there and say "WTF". And let's not forget, Buck Henry was the "go to" host the first few years. Throughout its history, SNL has had what are considered the "highs" and "lows" in terms of cast members. People think the "original" cast was the high point, others think when Eddie Murphy was on, others the Myers, Sandler era. Some think the original cast's replacements were the worst, some the cast right after Murphy left, and some think now is the worst cast. It doesn't matter because Lorne Michaels now has complete control over NBC's late night programming. NBC knows that Saturdays are the low point in television advertising, so if he can deliver average ratings at a cheap price, NBC is happy. Lorne is probably cutting cast salary costs in order to "bank up" some money right now so that in a couple of years he can get a pretty good cast that will be pretty good for the 2016 elections. That way, they can do some primetime stuff that will make the show "hip" and relevant.

299 SNL in the late 70s did a parody of the U.S. Navy recruitment commercials. "Join the Navy and See the World" showed a place like Hong Kong, or some other exotic place with happy sailors on liberty. SNL did one called; "Port of Call, Bayone, New Jersey." Besides showing sailors cleaning heads, scraping paint, and painting, it showed the lovely sights of Bayone.

300 What a coinky dink.  I watched SNL for the first time in heaven knows how long.

It sucked really bad and was not funny at all so much that I turned it off.  I found this Leena Dunham gal to be very obnoxious adding to her unattractiveness as a person more so as to her apparent shtick as a dumpy wallflower or whatever it is. Of what I watched, I did think that the lead character in the "Pimp, pimpin' with Katt" character to be well done.  He has talent.  The fat chick, news guy etc. and all were just not funny.  Nothing like some of the other talents of the past.

301 "I think she was the one that commented about Bush and rape or something." ------------ Are you talking about Cameron Diaz. Batshit crazy leftist, but with the emphasis on crazy, as in knee-jerk and brain-dead. She's the one that thought it was cute to carry a handbag emblazoned with Maoist symbols in Peru. And then she was surprised when they spit at her for it. (Over 100,000 dead from Shining Path/Maoist terrorism there.) "Golly gee! I didn't know! In Hollywood it's cool!"

Awesome! Ferguson is adorably geeky over Doctor Who. I am sure he'll have Capaldi on sometime, and when he does I will have to watch, it will be epic.

321 And, by funny, I mean a few chuckles per show. Nobody can point to a single episode of SNL that was as consistently funny as, for instance, a decent episode of Seinfeld, or early 30 Rock, or early Modern Family.

I can think of one, but only one.

Dec 09, 1989:

Yard-a-pult
Messy Date
Tales of the Runaway Boulder
Attack of the Masturbating Zombies
I believe there was a Tales of Ribaldry

I originally thought Happy Fun Ball was this episode, but it wasn't.  That was Feb 16, 1991, and seems otherwise unmemorable.

329 Robinson and local pastors are calling for the increased use of capital punishment, especially when it comes to black-on-black crimes. "The message has to get out -- a strong message that black life does matter, that there is a value attached to it," Pastor Kenneth Adkins said. He said community interest shouldn't solely surround trials like George Zimmerman's or Michael Dunn's. He said the same passion demonstrators displayed then is necessary every time a person is killed. "Where is the outrage when it's black-on-black crime? Adkins said. "Where are the marchers, where are folks that are fighting and those that are upset? It should be the same amount of passion from the community standpoint." Pastor Terrance Calloway said he's eulogized the deaths of nearly a dozen black men and teens over the last four years. He wants to see more mentorship programs offered for black teens and neighborhood programs to offset violent crimes. "I think the death penalty is sufficient for those who kill heinously," Calloway said. "We still have a problem that needs to be addressed, not just in the religious community, as the entire community." So crazy that it may just work.

336 It seems the left has gotten quite good at elevating people w/ zero talent, charisma, intellect, looks, etc into positions where (some) people are evidently supposed to pay them attention. 337 155 It was far and away the #1 show on Saturday in 18-49 and, I think, in total viewers. Posted by: Costanza Defense at March 10, 2014 01:37 PM (ZPrif) And was the second lowest rated episode of SNL of the year across households and the 18-49 crowd. So what does that say about the popularity of Saturday programming? The fact of the matter is it was a clunking failure. People tuned in for the musical guest and to see what all the fuss was about regarding Lena Dunham. They walked away unimpressed. Posted by: MWR, Proud Tea(rrorist) Party Assault Hobbit at March 10, 2014 01:46 PM (4df7R) That's like saying Coastal Carolina is one of the best teams in the country because they won the Big South and are in the NCAA tourney, but they aren't. Saturday nights on network television are the Bermuda Triangle and Black Hole of programming. It's where networks send shows to burn off new episodes so that they don't have to air them when it could hurt their actual numbers. The ratings for the show were the same as "Pawn Stars" Thursday night's show. Pawn Stars delivers more viewers than broadcast television on Saturday night. I would venture to say that the Duke/UNC basketball game was far and away the number one show on television Saturday night once those ratings come in. Almost forgot to add, the SNL ratings are based on the overnights which are based on the larger TV markets, once the ratings for "flyover" start getting added in, watch for the inevitable "adjusted downward" follow up.

I don't watch television, so I can't comment on SNL or "Girls". However, this lifelong Catholic has no problem with comedians riffing on the Bible, as long as they're funny. Last Saturday, my wife and I were walking down the street when a bus drove by with a huge

339 Wrong. Feminists ARE shrill -- every last one of them. They are, by and large, unattractive, because they deliberately make themselves unattractive so as to "stick it to the patriarchy." And yes, there are a fair few who preach feminism because they know they're too ugly and too shallow to ever find a man.

341 Clayton Bigsby? The first time I saw that I asked myself if this was real and actually happening. Brilliant and gut-punchingly hilarious. Posted by: EC at March 10, 2014 01:54 PM (GQ8sn) It was based on his grandfather. His grandfather was blind and very, very light skinned. From IMDB "Yes. Dave's grandfather was born blind. He was born in 1911 in a white hospital to a white woman. His birth father is unknown. According to Dave on the DVD commentary, "My grandfather looked like a white person. He probably was a white person...His dad was either black or white. Nobody knows. He could be white." He was adopted by a black family and he could not see himself so according to Dave "as far as he knows he's a black dude that grew up in the streets of D.C." On the day of the assassination of Martin Luther King, some black people started riots. According to Dave, on that day his grandfather is on a bus and hears a group of black youths threatening a white man. His grandfather thought how silly the white man was to be in a black neighborhood while blacks were rioting. He did not realize that the white man was him. As his grandfather explained to the youths that he was black, one can imagine the confused looks on their faces."

342 I know this isn't going to be well received, but I kinda like the chubby naked girl from HBO, I was annoyed by it the first season, but the characters are growing on me, and I like that Dunham seems in on the narcissist joke. The Adam and Eve joke made me laugh a few times, but that's probably because I like the show. However, the planned parenthood sketch on SNL was repulsive and beneath everyones dignity.

344 I think people watch SNL because it's a "Hip" New York City biased Sacrament of the Liberal Church (and it's history).

Which is why it's lasted so much longer than it deserves.

People aren't watching it for entertainment. They're watching it so they can talk about it with their liberal friends and show how liberal they are. They would feel left out if missed something and people were talking about it and they had to say they didn't watch.

Being seen as liberal seems to be the point of most liberal activism anyway.

346 I almost hate to see Hannah Horvath compared to George Costanza, if only because Seinfeld is 1000 times wittier on average than Girls at its best.

Of course, Girls gets around that by pretending that it's trying to be something more meaningful than a mere comedy.

349 You aren't alone, ronette. For, even though GIRLS Season 3 remains on my DVR as yet unwatched, I enjoyed Seasons 1 and 2 much more than most people here.

352 I've been watching "Girls" all along for reasons I know not. Perhaps I like watching train wrecks. Most of the show looks like it was shot through a dirty window. The first four shows repelled me because I thought it was glamorizing the lives of these lefty loser girls, a sort of louche "Sex In The City." Then I realized that it was a farce, mocking these directionless, vapid city twentysomethings. It is not praise for a lifestyle, but rather a horrible warning of what not to be and do. With that realization, I was repelled in an uplifting way by this tragedy. We peer through the dirty window of their sordid lives.

353 I've said it here before and I'll say it again: Lena Dunham is a very talented writer. And, you are correct that she makes herself the target of her own critique. So, I'm not surprised that she did the same thing on SNL. It's her style.

Posted by: Pastorius at March 10, 2014 05:04 PM (gMAUH)

354 I haven't found SNL funny in many, long years. IMHO here's funny by SNL's Pat Stevens sometime in the late '80s: Pat Stevens: Hi, thank you! Hello, everybody! Welcome to "The Pat Stevens Show", I'm Pat Stevens. Well, you caught me doing my favorite thing - reading a good book! You know, I like to think of my mind as a big, empty bucket, just waiting to be filled with pictures and words and.. whatever. Surprise me! That's why Vogue is my favorite book.. and you know, I have my own library - volumes and volumes of Vogue. You know, I can just refer to them. What was I thinking last October? Well, I can look, and it's right here, between September and November! I just love leafing through the pictures.. I know there's pain in the world, and poison and hunger and other bad things, but I love a jersey knit. [ sighs ] And the pictures are just so educational.. [ flips to a page ] Here's one I just love. [ holds it up to the audience ] It's a picture of a woman in a fur, and she has a baby. I've always thought that children made the best accessories! Well, gals, please pick up a book, I cannot express that enough - they're not that heavy.
