Obama Is a Very Bad Man Open Thread
— Ace

The scolds and There Are Other Things To Discuss Brigades are out,* so here's their thread.

Question:

Why do you think it is that seeing someone take an interest in something you're not personally interested in causes you so much discomfort? Why is someone else's interest taken as a hostile attack on the self?

Aren't you defining the borders of your selfness a bit over-large, such that no one can take step you don't take without in some way giving offense to you, kicking at your worldview and ego?

Is anyone allowed to take any interest apart from the three or four you share?

Is mere difference a signal of hostility that must be challenged and confronted?

These are important questions.

My problem here is the hostility, as if I've given personal offense by acknowledging cultural phenomena not appreciated by some. True Detective was a big thread on Hot Air; the Dunham thing I got from the top center of Drudge.

These things are going on. This hostility over mere discussion of interests some don't share is a drag, and I'm tired of it.

Both posts qualify as political -- the True Detective one especially. Both are certainly cultural-political.

Some of you are turning cultural rejectivism into a type of cult and it's annoying. You can belong to any cult you like, but those of us not in the cult don't want to hear about it every day.

* Burn the Witch says "Brigades? You're talking about four people."

True.

But hostility is, by definition, hostile. One notices it.

On Rejectivism:

>>> ace, I really don't know what to make of much of the America I find myself in. Much is alien, nowadays. Pop "culture" is mostly irrelevant to me, and junk. Vulgar, and shallow. This, from a guy who rode choppers on the street as a young man. I just sort of stand back in awe about how bad much of America has become. -- backhoe

I get that, and I share, to a fair extent, the cultural rejectivism embraced by many.

But it's annoying to have people constantly harp that you must join them at their exact level of cultural rejectivism. If they've completely tuned out, everyone else must completely tune out.

It's not even expressed as an argument, which would be less annoying, because an argument is always interesting.

It's just expressed as a hostile resentment. And then what do I say in return?

There is an interesting argument as to whether someone should (or even could) completely unplug from the current american culture.

I'd be interested in having it.

But this drive by resentment/hostility shit -- that's not an argument, that's just negative emotionalism.

I think 90% of the right tends to reject most of our current culture. Obviously, we will each make exceptions here and there for things we find meritorious.

Can we please stop treating such minor, trivial cultural preferences as important and status-conferring and Tribal Loyalty Signaling?

I liked True Detective because I like smart detective shows. Period. That's not an attack on someone who has tuned out of current culture. I just happened to turn on the TV, and it was on.

And that's it.

If you're reading more into than that, I would suggest you should probably think about not reading so much political/tribal/cultural import into everything.

I knocked some of the left for being determined to read a narrative of Tribal Flattery into True Detective.

The reactionary version of this -- the simple act of discussing True Detective is an act of betrayal against the right-leaning tribe -- is no less ridiculous.

Call them out for being narrow-minded twats, because they are and they deserve it.  But don't forget that the majority of us enjoy these digressions, and a sizable portion of us actually wish there were many, many more of them on this blog.

94 >>> ace, I really don't know what to make of much of the America I find myself in. Much is alien, nowadays. Pop "culture" is mostly irrelevant to me, and junk. Vulgar, and shallow. This, from a guy who rode choppers on the street as a young man. I just sort of stand back in awe about how bad much of America has become I get that, and I share, to a fair extent, the cultural rejectivism embraced by many. But this drive by resentment/hostility shit -- that's not an argument, that's just negative emotionalism

Which is total bullshit because obviously people watch/care about the person, since it wouldn't be news otherwise. And I don't care how much you try to avoid pop culture, everyone knows who Lena Dunham is just like everyone knows who the Kardashians are or Bieber or any of the others.

hahahahaha.  Very true.  Denham is so nasty.

Here's an interesting fact re world history.  I'm reading a tome, several, on the stuff.  In ancient Greece the city state of Locri had a rule that if one was to introduce a new law one had to do so standing on a removable platform with a noose around their neck.

If the law passed, the noose was removed.  If the law was rejected, the platform was removed.

I thought this was very interesting, but couldn't find the name of the place in my book to reread it.  So I googled it and lo and behold who cited this very practice.  Ronald Reagan joking about how new laws should be treated.

Holy Sweet Moses was Reagan fantastic!!!  How in the world would he specifically refer to this is beyond me.  Kindred spirits I suppose.   Back to the hate on Ace's ridiculously long obsession with Girls and True Detective.  haha.

Some years ago, here in my town there was a hookah bar that opened up. It was run by a Lebanese fellow, and they also served wine. Because I like weird and different stuff, I became a patron. Well they had this group of girls called "The Desert Moon Dance club" and they would show up at this place on Friday night in their costumes and put on a dance show for everyone. They enjoyed wearing their costumes and they enjoyed the attention that the received from the patrons. The place was pretty packed because all these girls brought their fellas with them who would buy drinks and hookahs and applaud their women. But there was this one girl, Turkish or Pakistani, who had danced professionally in the middle east, and she was a beauty. She would come out and put on a performance that was just awesome. She had the looks, she had the movies, and she had everyone's attention when she was dancing. She was good and she knew it. Well over time, she started taking up with the Proprietor, and somehow talked him into letting her do the show exclusively because she hated those other bitches who were rank amateurs. He agreed. In a month, the place closed down. Apparently all those other girls were actually bringing in paying customers who kept the place open, and when their girls couldn't dance, they quit coming. Giving the professional sole billing ended up wiping out the business.

164 If anyone wants to really discuss the rot of pop culture, highbrow drama series are not the target.

Tween comedies are the target.

There happened to be an episode of "Sam & Cat" on the other day.  Cat, the stupid one, manages to find an exact combination of buttons that spits out $400 from a gas station ATM.  Which she uses.  Then Sam finds out.  She is supposedly the intelligent one. So they keep taking the cash and spending it. No conscience whatsoever.

When the gas station owner finds out, he gets the cops involved.  The girls actually look surprised.  Scott Baio is the cop, portrayed like a complete dork.  The stupid girl gets arrested, but not the smart one, even though she was in on it.  To get arrested to "be with her friend", she pours a slushy down Scott Baio's pants.

In the cop car, another call comes in for a stolen car. The cop starts to pursue, with the girls in the car.   The girls had previously gone to the vet to pick up pet tranquilizers for a flight, but he thought they were candy.  So he started to pass out. The smart girl *climbs in his lap* to drive in pursuit.

The car thief ditched, and the girl jumps out and kicks the crap out of the thief off camera (as if).

In conclusion, gas station owner did not press charges, and the money had to be paid back.  Since there was a reward for catching the car thief, the girls paid it all back with a cool grand to spare.

When they had stolen $5000.

And that is what passes for good entertainment for youth.

168 I think a lot of the "I can't believe what America has become" talk is due to age. Most people posting here are not 15-25. So when they see the stupid shit 15-25 year olds do, say, it's all HOLY SHIT THE COUNTRY IS FINISHED/.

Well guess what, when you were 20, there was probably a 50 year old somewhere watching you and thinking HOLY SHIT THE COUNTRY IS FINISHED.

170 The suspicious part is that the passports were purchased by an Iranian, for someone else, in cash, the day before the flight, in a sketchy area, in another country. The stolen passports is just the icing on the cake. Try buying two tickets in cash from a travel agent in Tijuana, for someone else, for a flight out of LA the next day. Irrespective of the stolen passports, that pattern would be such a flag that you would be advised to bring your own scented lube for the cavity search.

178 Speaking of scolds. The internet including BlazeTV is full of Justin Beiber scolds today over some deposition tape in which he is less than respectful to some clown paparazzi pretending to be lawyers on a frivolous lawsuit. I don't know much about him, and couldn't name a single song he sings. But I'm always suspect of this piling on of celebrities. Here's what I know about him - he sings, has a lot of money, is about 18, smokes weed. Big deal on all those accusations. So apparently, a paparazzi is butthurt over getting slammed by a bodyguard. I'd think thats a major part of the job, getting slammed by bodyguards, but whatev. So they held a deposition and asked important questions in the case like - do you admire Usher? Do you talk to Selena Gomez? And Beiber mocks every stupid question. How is he the bad guy? I'd be up there mocking these clowns too. And thats my say for the day.

As my dad used to say: if you don't like what I'm watching on TV, go read a book. Same goes to the scolds: if you don't like the top post at AoSHQ -- go to another site -- in the entire, vast Internet I guarantee that some blog is discussing precisely the thing you want to discuss at this very minute.

ace, I didn't read that post, or the one after it, but from past experience I think I know what you're talking about

Look, you provide an excellent forum that on the whole produces great threads and lots of laughs (however dark, given our situation).

I myself am as cut off from pop culture as one could probably be, if you aren't living on a remote island.  Not because of rejectivism, mostly personal tastes and other interests.  So I mostly skip those sorts of posts - but as I'm in furious agreement with your perspectives and conclusions, look at it as sort of a stipulation from counsel to a case .... agreeing, but not taking the time to say any more than that.

I was considering trying to craft witty triple-entendre logic-looping funny comments, but the very able others have long beaten me to it above.  Gotta love the wit of many of the regulars here.

Malaysia Airlines Flight 653 crashed at Tanjung Kupang, Johor, on the evening of December 4, 1977,[7] the result of an apparent hijacking by unknown assailants as soon as it reached cruise altitude. It was the first and deadliest fatal accident for Malaysia Airlines, with all 93 passengers and 7 crew, from 13 countries,[8] killed instantly.[9][10] The plane had been en route from Penang International Airport to Singapore International Airport (Paya Lebar) via Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport. The circumstances in which the hijacking and subsequent crash occurred remain unsolved. Also the Bali bombings which was masterminded by a Malaysian terrorist-- Dr. Azahari bin Husin (September 14, 1957 – November 9, 2005), also Azahari Husin, Azhari Husin, was a Malaysian who was believed to be the technical mastermind behind the 2002 Bali bombing. He was killed in a police raid on his hideout in Indonesia in 2005. He was nicknamed the "Demolition Man". It took a week before an Al Qaeda audio tape was released and then it did not point to bin Husin. The organisation suspected of responsibility for the bombing was Jemaah Islamiyah, an Islamist group allegedly led by radical cleric Abu Bakar Bashir.[17][18] A week after the blasts, Arab satellite channel Al-Jazeera put to air an audio-cassette purportedly carrying a recorded voice message from Osama Bin Laden saying that the Bali bombings were in retaliation for support of the United States' war on terror and Australia's role in the liberation of East Timor.[4] "You will be killed just as you kill, and will be bombed just as you bomb", "Expect more that will further distress you." The recording did not however claim responsibility for the Bali attack.

No, that's not what I mean at all, perhaps I wasn't clear.  I don't care about a 'pat on the head' (that's the last thing I'm gonna get around here anyway).  What irks me, just a little bit, is the feeling that all it takes is one guy to come into any given 'pop culture' thread and crap in the punchbowl and then suddenly it feels like it's Ace Versus All The Stupid People Who Read This Blog...furthermore, I believe he's mentioned in the past that it makes him feel pressured to not post more 'non-political' stuff because he doesn't like the backlash.

But the thing is, he is always going to get it.  A blog like this simply inevitably profiles as the sort of place that will attract a disproportionate number (although still nothing like a majority or even plurality) of "I hate everything about modern culture" Internet Complaineyfaces simply because it offers a venue to vent.  I think it was Jesus who said "the poor and the Culture Rejectivists will be you always."  (Right?  Am I getting that quote right?)

Point is, getting so bent out of shape over them is pointless: their numbers are small but they are ineradicable until and unless this places eliminates comments altogether or goes to a registration format.  It's all in the game, y'know?

229 Meh, its conservative hipsterism. The kind of mindset that says "I never watch TV, I only eat at Chik-Fil-A and I love Ann Coulter for how she incenses Democrats but don't really like her and Rush is passe and I liked Sarah Palin before she went mainstream."
No one of those things is necessarily awful in themselves but the reason behind why they are being stated is troubling. Its exactly what they pretend to reject: style over substance, a position held not for its ethical and rational merits but its cachet, its feeling and the crowd it puts you in. It makes you feel superior toward others, it makes you feel like you're a better person for what you hold to.
Because of original sin, I suspect that we're all that way to some extent - even bashing hipsters is a sort of elitist hipster posing. But really how honest is it all?

I was at a wedding  reception this weekend.  The music played was, to me, an odd mix of urban (read: black)  and country (white) music.  And while I severely  despise both, I just assumed it would cause a  bit of discomfort for one group or another.

Oddly, what I observed  was a bunch of people  out on the dance floor hopping up and down, making fools of themselves  to BOTH types of music.

I realized  then, the problem  was me... as in, I was the one whose ears were being assaulted, and  the other people were just  up there doing what they do.

I can still  make fun of  them for hopping around like fools to that horrible  music, but they  seemed to be enjoying themselves, so I can't imagine they  cared at all what I thought.

252 Politics is downstream from culture, as Breitbart often said. Conservatives cannot and should not ignore culture. We need to fight to get our viewpoints represented, we need to encourage talented conservative artists to engage with culture. I think another famous guys, somebody named Space of Ades or something like that, has said you can't argue someone into a position they weren't argued into to begin with. Noticing why Dunham's appearance flopped and why "True Detective" works *IS* important if we are to start making and supporting movies and TV that push our ideas forward while actually being watched because they are entertaining.

Disagree, the "let the act speak for itself" idea is common in terrorist circles. The question becomes what was their target: A target in China? Why grab the plane so early - if your id'd as a hijack the PLA will shoot you down. Why are they looking on the other side of the peninsula, in he Indian Ocean? Where were they going? The only high value target out there is Diego.

Look I enjoy the things I enjoy and avoid the things I don't enjoy. I'm quite capable of deciding what's appeals to me or not and whether I wish to partake in more of it. Not everything in life must be political.

And something being funny or entertaining to me outweighs whether it's officially Conservative or not. And being lectured on whether I should enjoy something or not is a Not Enjoyable category for me. I am a full person with conservative political views - not a Conservative with a set of politically prescribed cultural interests.

304 as someone that is usually a lurker but hits refresh on your page many many times a day:

YOU ARE DOING FINE.

In other words: no need to change your content.

I am a cultural rejectionist (great word).  My kids have no idea what decade they come from and if you asked them their favorite tv show they could easily say Laverne and Shirley, Fantasy Island or The Pee Wee Herman show as that is the kind of shows that they watch.  Can't tell you the last time I had one of the big three networks tuned in my house.

However, I am hardly going to poop all over someone else because he talks about pop culture items that I have no interest in, ESPECIALLY when they do it in interesting ways as you do.  I actually read the True Detective post because while i had no investment in the show, the post was still interesting.

So please, carry on.

310 >>>I was at a wedding reception this weekend. I can still make fun of them for hopping around like fools to that horrible music, but they seemed to be enjoying themselves, so I can't imagine they cared at all what I thought. ... Wow what a good anecdote to illustrate what I'm talking about. Truth be told, we're ALL like this. We're all ANNOYED by things other people like that we don't, and we have been so annoyed since we were thirteen years old. But something about the internet has made it too easy to express this general annoyance at virtually EVERYTHING. In real life, we (like you at the wedding) keep our annoyance to ourselves. (BTW it probably should be kept to ourselves, as it is fundamentally irrational.) But the internet empowers everyone to CONSTANTLY attack every one else's cultural artifacts as TEH SUXXOR and so on. This is a human thing, but most humans restrain this in real life, so it's an internet thing. The internet frees everyone to constantly post their What's Hot/What's Not list and give free reign to their inner thirteen year old.

My wife and I were eating at some new Italian place that opened up.  Turned out the owner was a former Maserati dealership partner and it was Maserati day in the parking lot outside.  Every model you can think of was parked outside.  Inside, there was an obsidian elbowed girl in a short skirt and a tight jacket with 38DDD's stuffed inside them.  She was the receptionist at the dealership.

353 " The internet frees everyone to constantly post their What's Hot/What's Not list and give free reign to their inner thirteen year old. "
It kind of builds on its self too. What started out just "Eh, I don't really like Game of Thrones" turns into "you're a worthless thronefag if you even watched one episode and I hate you!" like a junior high girl fight. And it gets that way by everyone being so absolute and so angry when they post. Snark has replaced wit, so throwing a few "you suxx0r" lines in is considered funny and thus acceptable.
Its too easy on the internet to argue people into a corner where out of defensiveness, they start contending for, and perhaps even embracing, a position they didn't start out with.

Ace, I get what you're saying.  But you're being WAAAY too sensitive, dude.  Just ignore the yapping. It'll go on and on, regardless.

Sometimes we minor commenters can offer an opinion and we get snapped at by a few of the people who are here ALL THE TIME (which I don't understand, frankly, being here all the time, that is).  And we're advised not to be butt hurt.  I get that and I kind of agree with it.

Ignoring the hostility is probably the best option. Or banning. But we need the ass holes too.

389 Since people are joking about it, figured I might as well make the comment that the "dark matter killed the dinosaurs" story-- or, precisely, the reaction to the story--- is an equally depressing example of the oddly pervasive rejectionist argument in some parts of the Right.

For instance, the theory wasn't new to me (I recall reading it somewhere before now), but I still find it interesting.  It's practically ancient cosmology by now to postulate that gravitational perturbances can upset the Oort cloud causing it to chuck comets and the like inward.  Previous theories have alleged that a "Planet X" or Nemesis may be at fault; likewise, stars that come close enough to our system could nudge comets and debris inward (and outward too, of course).  These periods of "peak comet activity" may-- may-- correspond with past Earth extinctions that could potentially be ascribed to comet impacts.

Well, since dark matter has similar gravitational effects, it makes perfect sense to theorize that dark matter could be our guilty culprit, supplanting the old theories of Planet X (which after decades of looking does not appear to exist).  If there is measurable periodicity in the extinctions that correlate with potential impacts from dark matter, then that could be evidence of correlation, if not necessarily causation.

Well, guess what?  Every time there's science story reported online, I guarantee that the comment crowds in certain places (*cough* Hot Air *cough*) will pile out of the woodwork to say the same things:

"Your theories donÂ’t work so you come up with this magical dark matter to allow them to be feasible."

"WasnÂ’t there a time when scientists observed how stuff works instead of theorizing how it may have worked?"

etc., etc.

News flash: not all science is political, at least not to the degree that climate science is political (or, more accurately, politicized).  It's the worst of sins to have politicized climate science because apparently that's turned everyone around into irrational skeptics of other realms of science.

Pssst, dark matter isn't "magic."  It's a theoretical construct to explain the behavior of gravity in a universe where not enough observable matter exists to explain it.  No, you can't see dark matter at this time, you can only measure its effects.  But guess what?  You *can't see gravity, either*, yet we all know it exists.

I get the urge to joke about these things; I do it, too.  (Science is settled! ;-).

But this reflexive hostility to things that we don't understand is depressing.

BTW, I mean that literally-- there are things that *you* and *I* don't understand.  I don't understand how computers work.  Oh sure, I know the basics of information theory, microprocessors, programming language, etc.  But beyond that, I might as well be using a magic box on my desk.  Judging computer science by the same standard as above, I should be reflexively dismissive of anyone talking about computer "science" because, what do they know?  IT'S JUST A MAGIC BOX THAT BRINGS ME PORN.

Sigh.

100% agree. I'm hearing radio commercials for the Noah film, at the end they have a disclaimer, says "Though artistic license has been taken, we believe it to be true to the values of the original story."

Would they have bothered doing this a year ago, had not The Bible and its movie sequel done well? They know they might have crapped on their best potential audience for the film, are doing their best to court them back. Would Hollywood have bothered to do that 5 years ago? Things are changing, but you have to pay attention to it or you miss it, and the chance to nudge the future a little.

The problem comes when people claim its absolutely real and certain, that it is there and proven, and that anyone who questions it is a creation scientist loser.
Its a theory that helps certain cyclical universe theories become plausible, but is by definition unmeasurable and indetectable. The best anyone can do is note that it appears, from our limited ability to measure at this distance and over this much time, that something is having an effect on measurable phenomena. And that is taken as being evidence of "Dark Matter."
My take on this is that we're about as accurate on all this as philosophers looking at ants come out of a hole in the ground and concluding that ants come from dirt.

Posted by: Ace at 02:08 PM

I don't think that is true.  90% is way to high a number.  I'd say 25% of the right may have checked out.

The thing with blog comments and people stating they don't want to talk about anything else and claiming "I don't watch any tv" or "I don't watch any movies" or "I don't listen to any music" is nonsense and posturing.  It's simply a shortcut to prove their conservative bona-fides.

I'm as conservative as they come - I am a big fan of "let it all burn" - in fact I argue for conservatives to sit out an election or two to try and force the GOP to move right.  But, I have not checked out on the culture.  I watch tons of TV (I have True Detective in my Neftlix cue), I loved The Wire, love Game of Thrones, loved 30 Rock despite Alex Baldwin being an assclown.  I watch tons of movies - even movies by far right lefties.  I wont' watch a movie if I know it is nothing but preaching because I know I won't like it, but if it is simply made by leftists, or has some subtle leftist message, but is still a good movie - I'll watch. And, despite my hatred of most of it, I watch some of the reality TV because my wife does - the Bachelor, Real Housewives, etc.

I'll admit to being out of it on music, but I was always out of it on music, and most people can't keep up with new music once they reach about 25.

I'll put my conservative bona fides against anyone else's, the idea that you can't enjoy movies or television because you are conservative is inane.

It is socially unrewarding to be analytical about things that merit such an approach - another way of saying my "culture" plays no role - but what can you do?  Culture ain't upstream of my "politics".  It isn't even on the same planet.

This is a human thing, but most humans restrain this in real life, so it's an internet thing. The internet frees everyone to constantly post their What's Hot/What's Not list and give free reign to their inner thirteen year old.

I'm sure this is not particularly insightful, but I would assume there's some evolutionary action going on there.  For it's entire history, we've largely had to communicate face to face or maybe through letters, if you could read and write.

Do it wrong and for most of history you'd get a shot to the face, if lucky, or a sword to the gut if not.

But we've gone from the telegraph to  telephone to email to texting to internet so fast that it allows the inner fucktard to come out in more people.

That's why I love celebrities and media folk on Twitter.  They can't contain it.

See, there are people who consume pop culture because they are part of that culture, think they are neighbors to it and want to understand the shared culture of the US. Then there's me - I don't share it, I don't partake, it's too ugly and sickening to take much in. It's like a giant golden tub filled with vomitus, pus, and steak. I don't pick out the steak. It's pointless. I don't think the culture is shared - it excludes me, villainizes me, makes a mockery out of my faith, history, and principles. The culture I see is a hostile, vile, ugly, and twisted one. It is for a foreign place filled with enemies. My country died a while back. This? This is the yodeling of nazis, the humming of the soviets. That's why I'm not "up" on what's current.

I don't have enough time to read the comment trail so if I'm repeating what others said I apologize.

Pop culture requires lots of time and effort to stay current, and since I can't devote the required time to  it  I depend on bloggers to alert me to shows, books, recipes, movies  or  whatever.  Since that popular  culture  is so important  in  shaping  politics so dramatically  (that's not a  controversial  statement,  right?),  I'd like to encourage those self-same bloggers to enter the  public fray and  debate   cultural issues  on my behalf.

So, thanks to Ace  and his cobloggers  for keeping me current on the culture of the day and for arguing with the shitheads who I don't like promoting vapid and nihilistic bullshit from the left.    I don't have to like  the show of the day, or whatever "it" is , but I do want to know what it  is that everyone is talking about.

Other than the political commentary, one of the things I like most about this blog is that there is tare many posts that have little, if anything, to do with politics.

I see nothing with, and actually like bloggers, who find other things to do than write about politics all the time.

I agree that there is a great deal wrong with the culture we live in but for people (conservatives) to believe that we are somehow above it all, or that itÂ’s even possible to reject what we are naturally a part of, is absurd.

There is nothing wrong with trivial pursuits that have nothing to do with politics and not reading politics into everything we see.  If nothing else, these things make people more interesting and well-rounded rather than dopey by-products of a morally bankrupt culture, or whatever.

485 The “you’re talking about silly unimportant stuff“ complaint has no place on this blog. For one thing: because it’s Ace’s blog and not yours. And B: because there is plenty of space to talk about the “important stuff”. It’s like, if you don’t care for the newest post topic, scroll down for an earlier political post – and fire away with your important comments. Or better yet, wait 20 minutes and a new post, with an “important” topic will magically appear. Except of course these posts don’t appear by magic, someone has to work to get each one published. So there’s another option for those who find themselves “focused like a laser beam” on important, world-changing topics – create your own damn blog. This stuff has been said plenty of times by plenty of the top people at the blog. I am repeating, reiterating, reinforcing. Stop it y’all. Everything I know about her comes from this blog. IIRC, Bieber is a singer who might have been an American Idol dude and who is very effeminate and on a multi-year bender. The Kardashians have a tv show whose promos I see when I'm flipping channels. You know I used to say this kind of thing too until I came to a realization: they were right, too. Things have been getting incrementally worse over time. We've been getting softer and weaker and more childish. We've been getting technically more educated, but dumber every generation.
Every generation is usually right in their complaints about the new ones. What they note as a problem almost always really IS a problem. That doesn't mean 100% total disaster is on the horizon, but it does mean a problem. And each problem builds on the last.

494 The reason people on the right reject popular culture has a great deal to do with left-wing's big mind game they are playing. Every show gets reviewed and evaluated based on its left wing certifications. Violent pornography like Game of Thrones gets the green light for being somehow feminist. Duck Dynasty gets panned because, surprise, a Christian is not going to disavow the Bible when the inquisitor asks. When the left holds an event (or an event occurs that the left endorses), it's diverse and tolerant and any goofy messages or errors are played off as proof of authenticity. Unapproved events are old white men (with tokens who are compelled to be there by bossy white men). Any silly sayings or odd ideas will be put under the microscope. Any ideas that contradict the ideology are held up as risible. Every sin is proof that the right doesn't get it. Every poll emphasizes how your influence is waning. The goal is to make you feel like you are alone, isolated, and losing. It's an effective media strategy. If you complain about basic media strategy, you are paranoid, delusional, and a crybaby. Oh, and you are also always the bully. The crybaby and the bully. As a result, people are attempted to withdraw from the culture. The good news is that the internet heightens this sort of scorched earth cultural campaign.... But real life is a lot more reasonable. You can have conversations with most people and you will find that they are not as radical as the social media zealots.

495 Every show gets reviewed and evaluated based on its left wing certifications. Violent pornography like Game of Thrones gets the green light for being somehow feminist. Duck Dynasty gets panned because, surprise, a Christian is not going to disavow the Bible when the inquisitor asks.

So, some people on the right don't watch Game of Thrones because some other people on the left claim it is feminist?  And, some people on the right don't watch True Detective because some people on the left bitched and moaned about Duck Dynasty?

But, here is where your thesis breaks down.  Duck Dynasty is a huge part of the American Culture, as is Game of Thrones.  And, I watch a lot of tv and read a lot of blogs, but haven't seen a lot of arguments for Game of Thrones being feminist.

To some extent I agree with what you are saying - the left does try to make everything political.  But, just because pundits and activists on the left try to make every television show or movie political, doesn't mean it is.

but, fine, some people on the right have no interest in popular culture because they believe it is leftist and trash.  that's fine.  Why do they feel the need to post comments to Ace's blog in discussions of common culture stating "I don't watch X" or complaining that we are even discussing "x" because it is "off message"?

that is the real issue.  Why the need to proclaim oneself "above popular culture"?

To the extent it is an attempt to persuade the remainder of us to stop watching television or movies - good luck with that.  And, even more importantly, merely telling me that "you" are too good and upright and conservative to watch show "x" or "y" does nothing to persuade me not to watch it.  It isn't really even an attempt to persuade, it is simply an assertion of moral righteousness.  "I am too good to watch True Detective".  "I don't watch True Detective and you do and therefore you aren't as good as me"

Posted by: Monkeytoe at March 10, 2014 12:26 PM (sOx93)

496 I don't withdraw from culture. But when the left goes out of its way to make you feel isolated in every arena that they control, I don't fault people for noticing and pushing back. Personally, I don't think we can afford to withdraw. If people withdraw, they get marginalized even further. As long as we all know that the odds favor the house.... That means some people might be comfortable gambling knowing they will lose (and that the revenues will finance projects that attack your way of life). That means other people are going to look for a more favorable game.

Posted by: bleck at March 10, 2014 12:41 PM (b6Qog)

497 But for the record... I wouldn't say I am better than you for not watching a show. I'm just saying there is a reason people feel strongly about this and it isn't just self I righteousness. I mean, did you see the overt devil shit on the Grammy Awards... It's just a direct kick in the face of anyone who believes in and loves God.

There's no way I'm subscribing to HBO, but it's still interesting to read about.  If for no other reason than you find it interesting, and this comes through in the writing about the subject.

On the other flipper...
I never want to hear about Lena Dunham again.  She isn't interesting.  And you clearly don't find her interesting.  You're just writing about her because other people are writing about her (for some incomprehensible reason).
She's a troll.  She's trying to be "controversial" and "start a discussion" in the same vein Miley Cyrus uses.
Don't feed the damned trolls.

500 I hear you. I am actually a very easy-going person in real life.

Good to know, since last time I remarked you must be great at parties after you shit all over another pop culture thread you said you wished you could wipe my bios.

It'd be real hard for you to get through the day.

501 I wonder if any of this has to do with kids. I used to have an easier time watching TV and listening to music before I had kids. Now, I see things and I realize that: a) if I am going to tell my kids they cannot watch or listen to something because it is fundamentally wrong, I have to hold myself to the same standard; and, b) there really is a strong view on the left that it is their job to correct the evils of the family. I didn't used to be so impatient with pop culture as I have become. But I look at my kids and I realize that the stakes are high. I don't want them to grow up to be disrespectful, self-indulgent wastrels, blaming everyone else for their problems and looking for someone to bail them out whenever they make a bad decision. As an adult, I'm inoculated to the norms projected in pop culture... But to kids, this informs the social world of their peers. And the research shows that restrictive parents have kids who show more restraint as they mature. (Though, severely restrictive households often lead to lying).

504 Developing perceptions and opinions of any culture, political belief and so forth, without an examination from all sides leaves you unable to understand your real beliefs. All you end up doing is parroting what brings you approval from your social group. Others may be more gifted at reaching quick, accurate conclusions than I - but I find it necessary to walk around the question and look at it from different angles to make a decision. Even then I'll occasionally need to reassess. So to get to my point, I seek out a good debate, and enjoy people challenging my opinions. It is a healthy mental exercise, keeps my ego in check, makes me reflect on assumptions and yeah, I continue to learn. Heaven help me if I had decided I had attained my final enlightened understanding at an earlier stage in life. The journey continues

505 I hate Obama. I hate what American culture is becoming. But I do like that this blog looks at a lot of interesting areas. And when I find something not interesting, I SCROLL PAST, not whine. It's not that hard. Carry on, Ace. You're doing a great job. This is my favorite blog.

Posted by: bleck at March 10, 2014 05:40 PM (b6Qog) If you don't understand teens cultural references you will lose them. It's a language, a code. Without the ability to understand the meaning; they will tune adults out. If we want to be able to reach this generation as they grow up; we had better understand the code key. That being said: Restricting what they watch on television is common sense. Much of the current garbage normalizes self-destructive behavior. From my observations, parents that keep their children occupied with healthy activities from sports to the arts to academics- after school, and far away from the television see more successful, happy, socially comfortable teenagers. Introducing them to cultural experiences that elevate the mind instead of degrading it will pay off. However, generally the current generation, have a far more abrasive interaction, and it typically shocks and discomforts adults. Try standing in a room with 30 plus in action at the same time.

507 yeah, total cultural rejection is one thing, writing 5000 words on lena dungheap is another. You're a Gurlz fanboi, that's fine, but don't rag on the rest of us for being disgusted with you. It's like the Bronies phenomenon, don't make everyone else embrace the suck just because you're a pervert.

508 "If people withdraw, they get marginalized even further. " Early rock and roll musicians borrowed and reworked classical music. Other musicians have constantly borrowed Christian music, tweeked it and added secular lyrics. They took what was a familiar cultural element and introduced their cultural expression. My point, you cannot communicate without using some common cultural denominator to speak to people not sharing the same cultural tastes. Our cultural references are like a pair of old comfortable shoes, and we don't enjoy being forced to walk in something that lacks the natural fit. On the other hand, visiting other countries is also different. But we often enjoy it because we treat the "new" as an adventure. So, perhaps treating the "new" at home can be treated as an adventure as well. And perhaps it can be adapted to express your culture too.

509 You're right, surfin. And generally, it's where I'm at. I just look at what's held up as clever... And it often isn't. A lot of cultural criticism on the left is kind of shoddy reaction to writers who put fashionable ideas into their work. You know, go to college and learn some PC stuff.... Put it into your product... Then the "smart" people see that you traffic in the same PC nonsense and "interpret" your show. You seem smart, they seem smart.... And the public is given their daily dose of dogma... While getting to feel erudite for correctly seeing the trite nonsense.

510 Posted by: bleck at March 10, 2014 09:27 PM (b6Qog) It takes sacrificing some serious time; but you can immerse your children and yourself in serious cultural activities that will expose them to culture not available through television sitcoms. Although there are channels that contain the good stuff. If you don't like the modern crime mysteries there are always the great British detective shows: Agatha Christie, Miss Marple, Poirot, Cadfael and the current Sherlock. There are several unbelievably hilarious shows; one of the best was Doc Martin. The BBC has a ton of British lit put to the screen. Men will run screaming "chic flicks" from the room over Jane Austin; but British classics can be highly entertaining not to mention their sarcastic characterizations. Also, the Koreans have produced a endless number of family-friendly films and television shows if you don't mind reading subtitles. Often campy, but rather goofy fun as well. As long as there are museums, concerts and books; you can still find great music, art, literature and theatre. You just have to do some footwork ahead of time.

511 " I just happened to turn on the TV,..." well, there's your trouble.

Posted by: Shoey at March 10, 2014 06:16 PM (vA94g)

512 Yes. We read books, tons. Go to museums. And watch a movie on occasion. But my kids are all under 10.

Posted by: bleck at March 11, 2014 04:08 AM (b6Qog)

513 Every generation has its scolds who say that popular culture is the devil's work and that we must all give up music, television, movies, reading fiction, dance, whatever.

There is nothing new under the sun.

But, scolds are scolds.  Anyone who claims that the grammies are satanic or that pop culture is going to turn kids into devil worshipers are just scolds, who almost nobody but other scolds take seriously.

It's fine if you don't like modern television, or modern movies, or modern music, but don't dress your tastes up in righteousness.

To me, people who believe they are righteous because they refuse to watch television or movies are just weak minded.  Shakespeare is filled with lust and violence, it just happens to be in olde English so it doesn't sound as profane to your ears, but that is mere ignorance, not enlightenment.  The bible too is filled with violence and sex.  Elvis's swaying of hips was once thought to be too prurient for good people to watch.  Jazz was once the devil's music.

It's all silliness and weak mindedness.  If your immortal soul is truly going to be damned for eternity because you watched an episode of True Detective, than you really didn't have much of a chance anyway.

As far as this idea of "the left controls culture, so it is understandable to turn away from it" is again weak.  Yeah, the smart thing to do to combat the left's control of culture is to ignore it.  That'll solve the problem.  Much like the Amish have conquered modern America by not partaking in the culture.
