— Ace The scolds and There Are Other Things To Discuss Brigades are out,* so here's their thread.
Question:
Why do you think it is that seeing someone take an interest in something you're not personally interested in causes you so much discomfort? Why is someone else's interest taken as a hostile attack on the self?
Aren't you defining the borders of your selfness a bit over-large, such that no one can take step you don't take without in some way giving offense to you, kicking at your worldview and ego?
Is anyone allowed to take any interest apart from the three or four you share?
Is mere difference a signal of hostility that must be challenged and confronted?
These are important questions.
My problem here is the hostility, as if I've given personal offense by acknowledging cultural phenomena not appreciated by some. True Detective was a big thread on Hot Air; the Dunham thing I got from the top center of Drudge.
These things are going on. This hostility over mere discussion of interests some don't share is a drag, and I'm tired of it.
Both posts qualify as political -- the True Detective one especially. Both are certainly cultural-political.
Some of you are turning cultural rejectivism into a type of cult and it's annoying. You can belong to any cult you like, but those of us not in the cult don't want to hear about it every day.
* Burn the Witch says "Brigades? You're talking about four people."
True.
But hostility is, by definition, hostile. One notices it.
On Rejectivism:
>>> ace, I really don't know what to make of much of the America I find myself in. Much is alien, nowadays. Pop "culture" is mostly irrelevant to me, and junk. Vulgar, and shallow. This, from a guy who rode choppers on the street as a young man. I just sort of stand back in awe about how bad much of America has become. -- backhoe
I get that, and I share, to a fair extent, the cultural rejectivism embraced by many.
But it's annoying to have people constantly harp that you must join them at their exact level of cultural rejectivism. If they've completely tuned out, everyone else must completely tune out.
It's not even expressed as an argument, which would be less annoying, because an argument is always interesting.
It's just expressed as a hostile resentment. And then what do I say in return?
There is an interesting argument as to whether someone should (or even could) completely unplug from the current american culture.
I'd be interested in having it.
But this drive by resentment/hostility shit -- that's not an argument, that's just negative emotionalism.
I think 90% of the right tends to reject most of our current culture. Obviously, we will each make exceptions here and there for things we find meritorious.
Can we please stop treating such minor, trivial cultural preferences as important and status-conferring and Tribal Loyalty Signaling?
I liked True Detective because I like smart detective shows. Period. That's not an attack on someone who has tuned out of current culture. I just happened to turn on the TV, and it was on.
And that's it.
If you're reading more into than that, I would suggest you should probably think about not reading so much political/tribal/cultural import into everything.
I knocked some of the left for being determined to read a narrative of Tribal Flattery into True Detective.
The reactionary version of this -- the simple act of discussing True Detective is an act of betrayal against the right-leaning tribe -- is no less ridiculous.

Seriously, this stuff is interesting. I get that there's other "important" stuff going on in the world, but there's only so many times you can say, "Obammy's a pussy who's being repeatedly kicked in the bitch wrinkle by Putin" before you sound redundant. It's nice to take a break for a while.

I totally agree. For instance, Game of Thrones is only a month away. I can't wait to see Tyrion's storyline this season, but I'm afraid the show is really going to suffer from lack of quality in the last two books. I've been trying to get through the 5th book for over a year, but it's a bit of a snoozer. This time I'm trying the audio book.

You gotta learn.... "fuckit", "ducks back", "shrug the shoulders". Ive been managing people my entire adult life. While it good to consider others points of view, build consensus, yadayadayada..... it's also helpful to remember that at the end of the day, YOU set the agenda here. Constructive criticism is a good thing..... incessant whining from the chattering masses is not. What you cannot do is let it bother you. Ignore it. DONT PUNCH DOWN. Dont respond and do your thing.

hahahahaha. Very true. Denham is so nasty.
Here's an interesting fact re world history. I'm reading a tome, several, on the stuff. In ancient Greece the city state of Locri had a rule that if one was to introduce a new law one had to do so standing on a removable platform with a noose around their neck.
If the law passed, the noose was removed. If the law was rejected, the platform was removed.
I thought this was very interesting, but couldn't find the name of the place in my book to reread it. So I googled it and lo and behold who cited this very practice. Ronald Reagan joking about how new laws should be treated.
Holy Sweet Moses was Reagan fantastic!!! How in the world would he specifically refer to this is beyond me. Kindred spirits I suppose. Back to the hate on Ace's ridiculously long obsession with Girls and True Detective. haha.

Tween comedies are the target.
There happened to be an episode of "Sam & Cat" on the other day. Cat, the stupid one, manages to find an exact combination of buttons that spits out $400 from a gas station ATM. Which she uses. Then Sam finds out. She is supposedly the intelligent one. So they keep taking the cash and spending it. No conscience whatsoever.
When the gas station owner finds out, he gets the cops involved. The girls actually look surprised. Scott Baio is the cop, portrayed like a complete dork. The stupid girl gets arrested, but not the smart one, even though she was in on it. To get arrested to "be with her friend", she pours a slushy down Scott Baio's pants.
In the cop car, another call comes in for a stolen car. The cop starts to pursue, with the girls in the car. The girls had previously gone to the vet to pick up pet tranquilizers for a flight, but he thought they were candy. So he started to pass out. The smart girl *climbs in his lap* to drive in pursuit.
The car thief ditched, and the girl jumps out and kicks the crap out of the thief off camera (as if).
In conclusion, gas station owner did not press charges, and the money had to be paid back. Since there was a reward for catching the car thief, the girls paid it all back with a cool grand to spare.
When they had stolen $5000.
And that is what passes for good entertainment for youth.

ace, I didn't read that post, or the one after it, but from past experience I think I know what you're talking about
Look, you provide an excellent forum that on the whole produces great threads and lots of laughs (however dark, given our situation).
I myself am as cut off from pop culture as one could probably be, if you aren't living on a remote island. Not because of rejectivism, mostly personal tastes and other interests. So I mostly skip those sorts of posts - but as I'm in furious agreement with your perspectives and conclusions, look at it as sort of a stipulation from counsel to a case .... agreeing, but not taking the time to say any more than that.
I was considering trying to craft witty triple-entendre logic-looping funny comments, but the very able others have long beaten me to it above. Gotta love the wit of many of the regulars here.

Posted by: mrp at March 10, 2014 10:37 AM (JBggj)
No, that's not what I mean at all, perhaps I wasn't clear. I don't care about a 'pat on the head' (that's the last thing I'm gonna get around here anyway). What irks me, just a little bit, is the feeling that all it takes is one guy to come into any given 'pop culture' thread and crap in the punchbowl and then suddenly it feels like it's Ace Versus All The Stupid People Who Read This Blog...furthermore, I believe he's mentioned in the past that it makes him feel pressured to not post more 'non-political' stuff because he doesn't like the backlash.
But the thing is, he is always going to get it. A blog like this simply inevitably profiles as the sort of place that will attract a disproportionate number (although still nothing like a majority or even plurality) of "I hate everything about modern culture" Internet Complaineyfaces simply because it offers a venue to vent. I think it was Jesus who said "the poor and the Culture Rejectivists will be you always." (Right? Am I getting that quote right?)
Point is, getting so bent out of shape over them is pointless: their numbers are small but they are ineradicable until and unless this places eliminates comments altogether or goes to a registration format. It's all in the game, y'know?

No one of those things is necessarily awful in themselves but the reason behind why they are being stated is troubling. Its exactly what they pretend to reject: style over substance, a position held not for its ethical and rational merits but its cachet, its feeling and the crowd it puts you in. It makes you feel superior toward others, it makes you feel like you're a better person for what you hold to.
Because of original sin, I suspect that we're all that way to some extent - even bashing hipsters is a sort of elitist hipster posing. But really how honest is it all?

I was at a wedding reception this weekend. The music played was, to me, an odd mix of urban (read: black) and country (white) music. And while I severely despise both, I just assumed it would cause a bit of discomfort for one group or another.
Oddly, what I observed was a bunch of people out on the dance floor hopping up and down, making fools of themselves to BOTH types of music.
I realized then, the problem was me... as in, I was the one whose ears were being assaulted, and the other people were just up there doing what they do.
I can still make fun of them for hopping around like fools to that horrible music, but they seemed to be enjoying themselves, so I can't imagine they cared at all what I thought.

The other group I'm annoyed by are the people who sift through every book/tv show/movie/song/painting/game/etc/ to determine whether it's Conservative or Not Conservative (and to be shunned).
Look I enjoy the things I enjoy and avoid the things I don't enjoy. I'm quite capable of deciding what's appeals to me or not and whether I wish to partake in more of it. Not everything in life must be political.
And something being funny or entertaining to me outweighs whether it's officially Conservative or not. And being lectured on whether I should enjoy something or not is a Not Enjoyable category for me. I am a full person with conservative political views - not a Conservative with a set of politically prescribed cultural interests.

YOU ARE DOING FINE.
In other words: no need to change your content.
I am a cultural rejectionist (great word). My kids have no idea what decade they come from and if you asked them their favorite tv show they could easily say Laverne and Shirley, Fantasy Island or The Pee Wee Herman show as that is the kind of shows that they watch. Can't tell you the last time I had one of the big three networks tuned in my house.
However, I am hardly going to poop all over someone else because he talks about pop culture items that I have no interest in, ESPECIALLY when they do it in interesting ways as you do. I actually read the True Detective post because while i had no investment in the show, the post was still interesting.
So please, carry on.

Near high-end car dealerships?
Receptionist.
My wife and I were eating at some new Italian place that opened up. Turned out the owner was a former Maserati dealership partner and it was Maserati day in the parking lot outside. Every model you can think of was parked outside. Inside, there was an obsidian elbowed girl in a short skirt and a tight jacket with 38DDD's stuffed inside them. She was the receptionist at the dealership.

It kind of builds on its self too. What started out just "Eh, I don't really like Game of Thrones" turns into "you're a worthless thronefag if you even watched one episode and I hate you!" like a junior high girl fight. And it gets that way by everyone being so absolute and so angry when they post. Snark has replaced wit, so throwing a few "you suxx0r" lines in is considered funny and thus acceptable.
Its too easy on the internet to argue people into a corner where out of defensiveness, they start contending for, and perhaps even embracing, a position they didn't start out with.

I find that to define one's self in terms of what others find interesting (or worth engaging) or not is to be giving too much power over one's self to others. Perhaps, realizing this, they are just bitter/hostile that they must rely on others to define them.

For instance, the theory wasn't new to me (I recall reading it somewhere before now), but I still find it interesting. It's practically ancient cosmology by now to postulate that gravitational perturbances can upset the Oort cloud causing it to chuck comets and the like inward. Previous theories have alleged that a "Planet X" or Nemesis may be at fault; likewise, stars that come close enough to our system could nudge comets and debris inward (and outward too, of course). These periods of "peak comet activity" may-- may-- correspond with past Earth extinctions that could potentially be ascribed to comet impacts.
Well, since dark matter has similar gravitational effects, it makes perfect sense to theorize that dark matter could be our guilty culprit, supplanting the old theories of Planet X (which after decades of looking does not appear to exist). If there is measurable periodicity in the extinctions that correlate with potential impacts from dark matter, then that could be evidence of correlation, if not necessarily causation.
Well, guess what? Every time there's science story reported online, I guarantee that the comment crowds in certain places (*cough* Hot Air *cough*) will pile out of the woodwork to say the same things:
"Your theories donÂ’t work so you come up with this magical dark matter to allow them to be feasible."
"WasnÂ’t there a time when scientists observed how stuff works instead of theorizing how it may have worked?"
etc., etc.
News flash: not all science is political, at least not to the degree that climate science is political (or, more accurately, politicized). It's the worst of sins to have politicized climate science because apparently that's turned everyone around into irrational skeptics of other realms of science.
Pssst, dark matter isn't "magic." It's a theoretical construct to explain the behavior of gravity in a universe where not enough observable matter exists to explain it. No, you can't see dark matter at this time, you can only measure its effects. But guess what? You *can't see gravity, either*, yet we all know it exists.
I get the urge to joke about these things; I do it, too. (Science is settled! ;-).
But this reflexive hostility to things that we don't understand is depressing.
BTW, I mean that literally-- there are things that *you* and *I* don't understand. I don't understand how computers work. Oh sure, I know the basics of information theory, microprocessors, programming language, etc. But beyond that, I might as well be using a magic box on my desk. Judging computer science by the same standard as above, I should be reflexively dismissive of anyone talking about computer "science" because, what do they know? IT'S JUST A MAGIC BOX THAT BRINGS ME PORN.
Sigh.

100% agree. I'm hearing radio commercials for the Noah film, at the end they have a disclaimer, says "Though artistic license has been taken, we believe it to be true to the values of the original story."
Would they have bothered doing this a year ago, had not The Bible and its movie sequel done well? They know they might have crapped on their best potential audience for the film, are doing their best to court them back. Would Hollywood have bothered to do that 5 years ago? Things are changing, but you have to pay attention to it or you miss it, and the chance to nudge the future a little.

What is making me believe that we're being bullshitted about this whole event is that an airliner disintigrating over anyplace is going to leave a lot of debris, either over land or on the water surface. The problem comes when people claim its absolutely real and certain, that it is there and proven, and that anyone who questions it is a creation scientist loser.
Its a theory that helps certain cyclical universe theories become plausible, but is by definition unmeasurable and indetectable. The best anyone can do is note that it appears, from our limited ability to measure at this distance and over this much time, that something is having an effect on measurable phenomena. And that is taken as being evidence of "Dark Matter."
My take on this is that we're about as accurate on all this as philosophers looking at ants come out of a hole in the ground and concluding that ants come from dirt.

Posted by: Ace at 02:08 PM
I don't think that is true. 90% is way to high a number. I'd say 25% of the right may have checked out.
The thing with blog comments and people stating they don't want to talk about anything else and claiming "I don't watch any tv" or "I don't watch any movies" or "I don't listen to any music" is nonsense and posturing. It's simply a shortcut to prove their conservative bona-fides.
I'm as conservative as they come - I am a big fan of "let it all burn" - in fact I argue for conservatives to sit out an election or two to try and force the GOP to move right. But, I have not checked out on the culture. I watch tons of TV (I have True Detective in my Neftlix cue), I loved The Wire, love Game of Thrones, loved 30 Rock despite Alex Baldwin being an assclown. I watch tons of movies - even movies by far right lefties. I wont' watch a movie if I know it is nothing but preaching because I know I won't like it, but if it is simply made by leftists, or has some subtle leftist message, but is still a good movie - I'll watch. And, despite my hatred of most of it, I watch some of the reality TV because my wife does - the Bachelor, Real Housewives, etc.
I'll admit to being out of it on music, but I was always out of it on music, and most people can't keep up with new music once they reach about 25.
I'll put my conservative bona fides against anyone else's, the idea that you can't enjoy movies or television because you are conservative is inane.

ace @ 307, again there are people who fall outside your generalization. I for one. As I have said before in response to posts where you say that we all want politics to affirm our culture (something to that effect), not so. My "culture", whatever that is, has essentially nothing to do with my "politics" (a word I generally use for those - most - with no seriousness about the subject and very primitive understanding of the issues - even when it affects them directly and materially).
It is socially unrewarding to be analytical about things that merit such an approach - another way of saying my "culture" plays no role - but what can you do? Culture ain't upstream of my "politics". It isn't even on the same planet.

This is a human thing, but most humans restrain this in real life, so it's an internet thing. The internet frees everyone to constantly post their What's Hot/What's Not list and give free reign to their inner thirteen year old.
I'm sure this is not particularly insightful, but I would assume there's some evolutionary action going on there. For it's entire history, we've largely had to communicate face to face or maybe through letters, if you could read and write.
Do it wrong and for most of history you'd get a shot to the face, if lucky, or a sword to the gut if not.
But we've gone from the telegraph to telephone to email to texting to internet so fast that it allows the inner fucktard to come out in more people.
That's why I love celebrities and media folk on Twitter. They can't contain it.

I don't have enough time to read the comment trail so if I'm repeating what others said I apologize.
Pop culture requires lots of time and effort to stay current, and since I can't devote the required time to it I depend on bloggers to alert me to shows, books, recipes, movies or whatever. Since that popular culture is so important in shaping politics so dramatically (that's not a controversial statement, right?), I'd like to encourage those self-same bloggers to enter the public fray and debate cultural issues on my behalf.
So, thanks to Ace and his cobloggers for keeping me current on the culture of the day and for arguing with the shitheads who I don't like promoting vapid and nihilistic bullshit from the left. I don't have to like the show of the day, or whatever "it" is , but I do want to know what it is that everyone is talking about.
Onwards!

Seems so, huh? This is the story, of all the stories out there, that has my attention. Planes just don't disappear, especially in high-population/high-trafficed areas without someone seeing something, whether the event itself or debris of the aftermath. The reports so far aren't moving the truth-O-meter.

Other than the political commentary, one of the things I like most about this blog is that there is tare many posts that have little, if anything, to do with politics.
I see nothing with, and actually like bloggers, who find other things to do than write about politics all the time.
I agree that there is a great deal wrong with the culture we live in but for people (conservatives) to believe that we are somehow above it all, or that itÂ’s even possible to reject what we are naturally a part of, is absurd.
There is nothing wrong with trivial pursuits that have nothing to do with politics and not reading politics into everything we see. If nothing else, these things make people more interesting and well-rounded rather than dopey by-products of a morally bankrupt culture, or whatever.

Nope. And long, drawn out arguments and flame wars over subjective things like taste in music or movies don't interest me either. I like what I like, you like what you like.
Sports, on the other hand, as a Philly fan in good (bad?) standing, bring it on!

I bet you'd see a reduction in those comments pretty quickly.
I'll also bet about 1/2 of those comments are by people just trying to get your goat. You have posted enough about how this irritates you that I can see a certain profile enjoying tweaking you every time you go "off message".
Bring out the ban hammer.

Point out to people that newspapers have arts, sports, business, and other sections, so why shouldn't blogs?
Television news has stories on sports, arts, business, and human interest as well.
I don't think a single one of these commenters honestly believe you shouldn't post "off message" posts. They are a) tweaking you and b) throwing down their bona-fides by saying "I'm so conservative I don't have time for television!!"**

And when you're right, you're right. Ruin Tamorrow Jr. screwed up when he traded away every prospect the Phils had to try to win in 2010 & '11. We are going to be pretty bad this year, and Astos/Marlins-level bad after that. But what hell, they milked the one championship for 28 years, we can win another one in 2036.

You know I used to say this kind of thing too until I came to a realization: they were right, too. Things have been getting incrementally worse over time. We've been getting softer and weaker and more childish. We've been getting technically more educated, but dumber every generation.
Every generation is usually right in their complaints about the new ones. What they note as a problem almost always really IS a problem. That doesn't mean 100% total disaster is on the horizon, but it does mean a problem. And each problem builds on the last.

So, some people on the right don't watch Game of Thrones because some other people on the left claim it is feminist? And, some people on the right don't watch True Detective because some people on the left bitched and moaned about Duck Dynasty?
But, here is where your thesis breaks down. Duck Dynasty is a huge part of the American Culture, as is Game of Thrones. And, I watch a lot of tv and read a lot of blogs, but haven't seen a lot of arguments for Game of Thrones being feminist.
To some extent I agree with what you are saying - the left does try to make everything political. But, just because pundits and activists on the left try to make every television show or movie political, doesn't mean it is.
but, fine, some people on the right have no interest in popular culture because they believe it is leftist and trash. that's fine. Why do they feel the need to post comments to Ace's blog in discussions of common culture stating "I don't watch X" or complaining that we are even discussing "x" because it is "off message"?
that is the real issue. Why the need to proclaim oneself "above popular culture"?
To the extent it is an attempt to persuade the remainder of us to stop watching television or movies - good luck with that. And, even more importantly, merely telling me that "you" are too good and upright and conservative to watch show "x" or "y" does nothing to persuade me not to watch it. It isn't really even an attempt to persuade, it is simply an assertion of moral righteousness. "I am too good to watch True Detective". "I don't watch True Detective and you do and therefore you aren't as good as me"

There's no way I'm subscribing to HBO, but it's still interesting to read about. If for no other reason than you find it interesting, and this comes through in the writing about the subject.
On the other flipper...
I never want to hear about Lena Dunham again. She isn't interesting. And you clearly don't find her interesting. You're just writing about her because other people are writing about her (for some incomprehensible reason).
She's a troll. She's trying to be "controversial" and "start a discussion" in the same vein Miley Cyrus uses.
Don't feed the damned trolls.

There is nothing new under the sun.
But, scolds are scolds. Anyone who claims that the grammies are satanic or that pop culture is going to turn kids into devil worshipers are just scolds, who almost nobody but other scolds take seriously.
It's fine if you don't like modern television, or modern movies, or modern music, but don't dress your tastes up in righteousness.
To me, people who believe they are righteous because they refuse to watch television or movies are just weak minded. Shakespeare is filled with lust and violence, it just happens to be in olde English so it doesn't sound as profane to your ears, but that is mere ignorance, not enlightenment. The bible too is filled with violence and sex. Elvis's swaying of hips was once thought to be too prurient for good people to watch. Jazz was once the devil's music.
It's all silliness and weak mindedness. If your immortal soul is truly going to be damned for eternity because you watched an episode of True Detective, than you really didn't have much of a chance anyway.
As far as this idea of "the left controls culture, so it is understandable to turn away from it" is again weak. Yeah, the smart thing to do to combat the left's control of culture is to ignore it. That'll solve the problem. Much like the Amish have conquered modern America by not partaking in the culture.
