Overnight Open Thread (1 Feb 2014)
— CDR M

Ah yes, tomorrow is Groundhog Day. You know, Punxsutawney Phil is more accurate with his predictions than so-called climate scientists and their global warming models.

Speaking of Groundhog Day, here's an interesting question. How long was Bill Murray stuck in Groundhog Day?
Obvious Study

People slow to react are more likely to die prematurely. You don't say. Someone actually paid for this? But hey, you can test your reaction time here with this test.

The Cook's Thesaurus

Ever start to cook something and realize you are missing an ingredient or two? Well fear no more as The Cook's Thesaurus will help you come up with similar ingredients to complete your meal.

Practical Chemistry

Cool stuff.

Sabertron

Got kids? Like Gladiator movies? Maybe fancy a colored lightsaber from Star Wars? Well this Kickstarter project just might be for you. Sabertron: Foam sword play with wireless electronic scoring.

Useless College Courses

Why would one go into six figure debt and take courses like this? Rutgers University offers class on Beyonce.

Or this one. Backward college professor teaches students to sympathize with bin Laden.

Car WiFi

Nice idea in theory but if every car does not have one, it will be a problem. Potholes abound on the road to car-to-car communication. Once you get used to relying on the alert system to proceed through an intersection, you may stop looking both ways before proceeding and that'll be the one time a car without it runs the red light. I have blind spot detection on my current car and it works great except when it rains. I still look over my shoulder before making a lane change but I'm sure there are some people who rely on the gadget without verifying it is in fact clear.

In addition to the above, there are still concerns over hacking and who can get your information and use it against you.

Chinese Demands

Heh. US to China: "Happy New Year." China to US: "Give us our money back." I guess they haven't heard about what happened to the GM bondholders.

Airsoft Battles

OK, I think I can get into this airsoft gun stuff, if I could have one of these.

Pin-Ups

There's a bar in Glenwood Springs, CO called Doc Holidays. They have an old wooden bar back that was brought in on three wagons in the late 1800's. Doc Holiday went there for the springs, they were supposed to alleviate his tuberculosis. Pretty cool place. I've wanted to do a coffee table book on stuff like that for a while. I was in a VFW in Boise City, OK that had an 1800's bar back in there that was pretty impressive. I would love to see some of the old bars on the left coast.

Modern coffee makers are pretty efficient at extracting 90%+ of the caffeine present in the grind, which is the main reason I drink the stuff. But I'll concede that the first fresh brewed cup tastes the best.

298 PGiS, I make it on sunny days in the winter as well, but then, we get good solar heat in Colorado. I can't promise my method is the best -- I don't have the most sophisticated tastes. I pretty much think coffee is good if it is strong. Pioneer woman has a method on her website. I steep mine longer than she says because I don't feel I get enough flavor in less than 1 day.

They also make great coffee, just more, as you said "hands on:" Posted by: Niedermeyer's Dead Horse at February 01, 2014 11:48 PM (DmNpO) I had an electric coffee maker before I bought the French press. I kept a small jar of instant coffee in the cabinet for emergency use during power outages. I have a gas range, so I can still heat water. Now with the French press, I have to heat a pot of water on the stove anyway, which means that I'll be able to make coffee normally during the next outage. Bye bye instant!

306 The place where I had my first accounting job (1983), was also the investor HQ for a company that made concentrated coffee brewed coffee that was distributed in bags, then mixed with hot water to make a cup, sort of the way coke machines work. I've never been a coffee drinker, but plenty of people said it came out pretty good (our office had the demo machine full time). I had always thought the Keurigs were like that. *** K-cups are little individual servings of coffee contained within a filter which is contained inside of a little plastic cup. The brewer punches the top and bottom of the cup and forces pressurized water through the top which brews it and then it pours through the bottom into the cup.

Alton,

In the Keurig machine, there is a sharp, pointy, large-bore needle that punctures the top seal of the "K-Cup", and another one that punctures the bottom of the cup, offset towards the edge.

The heated water is injected through the top needle, into the grounds (yes, actual coffee grounds, extra-fine, to ensure a timely brew), and the water is pumped into, and through the "K-cup" under pressure, to more quickly saturate said grounds.  Towards the end of the cycle, it seems that a final purge is delivered via a small bit of air pressure, thus clearing remaining water from the pressure cycle, and getting that last bit of brew from the empressured "K-Cup" chamber.

When you remove the spent "K-Cup" from the brewer, it is not empty, as it would be if it had been any sort of instant coffee.  Rather, it has the weight of any other like measure of post-brewed grounds.  If you're that skeptical, I suppose someone here can peel the lid off of a spent "K-Cup", and photograph the evidence for you?

The pressure brewing method is what makes it work, and as long as you're buying "cups" from a reputable packager, i.e;  Keurig, Folger's, Dunkin' Donuts, etc, then you're truly getting the real thing.

Pro-Tip.  Avoid at all costs any "K-Cup" offerings of tea of any kind, and likewise for any hot chocolate brew.  Just.  Don't.

It kicks ass though, for coffee.  Highly endorsed.

Tour notes: *There are still several bullet holes in the hallway were the guy shot Huey Long. *The gardens are nice. *I had my road-trip backpack with me going through security and forgot that there was a large pair of scissors inside it for cutting yarn and clipping recipes & stuff. The X-ray machine caught it but security was totally chill. Even let me keep them in my bag. *The elevator ride to the top of the tower was comically lame-the first elevator was OK, but somewhere at floor 11 or so you changed to a second elevator, with poorly-installed plywood walls. I was so embarrassed for them, being a Texan with the most beautiful and classy capitol building in the country. The hinges on the shutters in the capitol bathrooms have perfect Texas stars stamped into the brass. No shitty plywood elevators for us. And that is my report from a place that has bullet holes in the walls. I have also been to Gettysburg but it's been a while.

I have a refillable K-cup, but I haven't been as happy with it as I have with the "real" K-cups. Besides, although filling the thing certainly isn't difficult, it cuts down on the biggest draw of the Keurig - one cup of coffee in 5 seconds, with no mess or fiddling. Since I am not a morning person, the less I have to do to get that first cup, the better.

418 What kind of surround system did you end up with? Sony. This one ( http://tiny.cc/xd3max ). Not my very first choice, but I was able to get it "free"* I found the HDMI to RGB converter I needed, and it works for the picture from the cable box, but not for DVDs or Blu Rays. I think the problem is the TV, it's 8 years old and I suspect it only handles 1080i, while the disc output is 1080p. Nothing to do about that except buy a new TV, which I'm not quite ready to do. In April I may be able to get a TV "free" from the same source I got the Blu Ray. I'm as thrifty as a Scotsman though, I hate replacing stuff that works perfectly well. *Work has a career production bonus program, as you hit career milestones, they give you points that can be spent on merchandise. So, on one hand it was free, but look at it another way I worked for 16 years to get it. In April next bonus points go into my account, I may have enough for a 60" TV to replace my old one.

A lifetime ago, when I ran retail stores, One of our vendors set up a points program that sounds similar. I moved Richmond to open two new stores and decided to give my TVs away. Told myself "if I go a year without a TV, I'll buy the best TV out there." I ended up not owning one for almost three years. Was told I had to cash in points or lose them. I ended up with a big Sony, a VCR, a bike, and a bunch of other stuff. Kinda wish I never got the TV.

470 So, we had this issue where we discovered that rats had gotten into our attic through a chewed hole in this weird origami part of our roof, and we called out some exterminators who, essentially, specialize in rat control. They know where to look, what to do, how rats work, what they're thinking....and they baited with the anticoagulant stuff -- which I hadn't previously known also makes the rats incredibly thirsty, so they'll leave your structure looking for water -- until it looked like they were all out, then went through and sealed all the cracks and crevices they could use.

All seemed good, except that I was doing some work in the dining room and heard a little scurry by the kitchen ceiling every once in a while. Or I'd be in the living room, and I'd hear a little scurry by the ceiling by the dining room. So I called 'em back out, and they inspected, and said, "nope -- but call us back as often as you want, you're guaranteed for a year."

And I keep hearing it, until one day, I'm standing right by the division between the kitchen and dining areas and heard it again -- but could triangulate exactly where it was coming from. It was the damned icemaker dumping cubes into the bucket and having 'em slide down the pile.

Amazingly enough, you can still get it in California -- 'cause I did a couple of months back....but you can't buy paint thinner. The way that it was explained to me is that it was an anti-coagulant, and if the rat got a scratch it would bleed out.....but if it didn't, it would start losing plasma into the gut -- not much, but enough to get it dehydrated. Whereupon it would "go walkies" to find water, and probably eventually get scratched.

We got invaded by mice back in December, when it got cold.

They were coming in through the dryer vent.

A subtle cherry wheat has some plausible appeal. And I could see dark-roasted malts with a hint of cherry having an interesting flavor. But this crap didn't even taste like beer.

But I don't get your disdain for IPAs.....sure, the originals crammed in the Kent Goldings hops until they wouldn't spoil on a trip through the tropics, but modern California IPAs use blends of (oft-times related) hops to capture exotic blends of pineyness, citrus, floral, or just "zing!" Try one of the Stone ones, for instance -- I was down there in November and had a blast.

I don't know how rational you want to be about this, but it's actually better not to relocate raccoons. The most humane way (hint, hint for Death Row) is to suffocate them in pure nitrogen -- it's 70% of air in the first place, so it's not recognized as a dangerous substance; there's no buildup of CO2, so there's no panicked panting or distress; and when the bloodstream O2 levels fall off, it's a painless lights-out. You can buy or rent tanks cheaply, they don't have to be made out of anything special, it's not explosive....it is prone to industrial accidents in enclosed spaces because it seems so innocuous -- you don't get a smell or a headache or blurriness in advance.

The reason against relocating them is that they'll start mini-plagues when you do. Each local population has their own disease load that they've fought to a draw.....but when you move them a couple of raccoon-generations-of-travel away, none of the raccoons there will have any immunity. When you get to >100 miles, the effects can be almost genocidal -- but might be almost nonexistent.

We're already in a semi-rural area...that's why we've got the problem.

So I think that whatever diseases they've got, the other raccoons over by the river will probably have them too...or be immune.

But that's something to consider, though.

I wouldn't mind putting them to sleep...but mr. wheatie is a real softie.

There's no shortage of raccoons here in OK.

You can make your own, and I had done some work in that area, but adding TSP (suggested elsewhere) can actually damage your glassware and I ended up using -- Consumer Reports fave: Finish PowerBall packets. Now, here's the important bit -- if you go online, you'll find there are boxes of weird sizes, like 24, 36, 54, 96, or 104 tabs or something.....check the price per tab. You'll find something really peculiar -- like the 96-tab box is half the price per tab as the 104-tab box, or vice-versa. Get the cheap one.

It's not perfect, and I have washing soda and TSP around in case I want to jack around with it later.....but they're pretty good.

Wheatie - i need to find some kind of mouse control that won't kill or break the toes of the min-pin. If anyone has advice, do tell.

Cooth - i think almost every label of every product i buy has that "not for Commiefornia" label. I could make a nice ecksplosiive in 15 minutes in the HD parking lot for a few dollars. You can't buy paint thinner?

You can still get TSP out here. And you can still mix explosives. It's the Air-Quality Management Districts that are out of control -- you can't get volatiles (things that smell) or creative ways to burn things (and not run them through a catalytic converter).

Especially out here away from the cities.

I live in Silicon Valley, within walking distance of a mall with a Gucci store....and I was driving to the grocery store one night when I pull up to the little demand-signal to get out of the neighborhood and wait for it to turn green. When it does, and I start rolling, I caught movement out of the corner of my eye and spot a raccoon crossing the street, in the crosswalk, who had been waiting for the light to change. They're EVERYWHERE, and they're smart little buggers about fitting in.

I have a dog in the house, too.

The trick is, to positions your traps in places where your puppeh can't get to...

Like next to the fridge, between the fridge and the wall...or behind furniture.

The bait you use in your traps needs to be irresistible for them.

I tried peanut butter...no sale.

I had a bunch of baby Snickers bars leftover from Halloween...and was eating one...

A mouse ran past me and stopped for a second, sniffing the air.

That's what gave me the idea to use Snickers to bait the traps.

I was having traps go off almost as fast as I could re-bait them again...got eight mice within about thirty minutes.

My dog is a big guy, with a head bigger than mine.

So I can slip my hand and arm into places that he can't get to...to position the traps.

But Chi's doggeh sounds smaller.

So the 'Jaws' of death traps that I use might be a problem for him..if he doesn't have some little tight places to put them that his pup can't get to.

One trick I learned (from the local vermin control staffers) is to cut a washcloth (the kind that's like a small bath towel) into 1" squares and put the peanut butter on the cloth, then hook the cloth to the trap. Rats and mice want to take their food away to eat it, or just lick, gnaw it away. If they can do the first, the trap won't get 'em.....if they do the second, the trap might not spring -- but if they think they can haul off the towel, they're likely to give that trigger a good tug.

And you just haven't known me long enough -- on our second conversation, you'll have me more properly sorted out as "repetitious blowhard".

Yeah, the raccoons around here have been getting really brazen.

My dog has killed a couple of them in the yard...so they've backed off on coming inside the fence.

But we've got a tree that we've let the branches get grown over to the edge of the roof...and it sits on the fence line...so that is my theory on how they're getting into the attic.

That thing about the brain-worms...now, mr. wheatie hates bugs, spiders and any kind of creepy crawly thing like that.

I tell him about that, and he just may declare war on the fuckers.

Before, we would use cans of tuna in the tender trap...to lure them into it.

So I guess we could just use some sort of poison in the tuna cans this time.

Works for me.

I've been trying to envision how one would get a screaming raccoon into a trash bag to use the nitrogen gas on them.

That's a little more intimate than I want to get with one.

Based on them planting death worms near human occupation, being plentiful as dandelions, and having few redeeming qualities, I would personally consider them vermin and shooting/gassing with auto exhaust are in play -- but if someone is queasy with that, ok. Nitrogen suffocation is something especially merciful that I could see with condemned human prisoners -- and is cheaper and easier than a cyanide chamber, electric chair, or lethal injection. As far as Hefty usage goes -- how do you move the tender traps? Put entire trap into a 55-gallon Hefty bag, cut small slit on bottom, wrap bag opening around gas source, start pumping.

Now, my dog is already vaccinated, annually...and he gets a multi-wormer pill every month...so I don't worry about him when he kills one.

Could be worse -- with rabies, they mostly have to be alive to bite you. I used to live in Newbury Park, CA, which is quite near Agoura.....and, evidently, Agoura has one of the larger bacterial reservoirs of Yersinia pestis in the western hemisphere in its ground squirrels.

Yersinia pestis, also known as "Black Death" or "Bubonic Plague" reduced world population by about 1/3 in the 1300s. It's still around. In California squirrels, among other places.

Anyhoo -- the fun thing about that is you could gas the host (squirrel, raccoon, etc.)....and still get bit by an infected flea while you were disposing of the body -- insects take much longer to suffocate than mammals do. In fact, since their intended host no longer had any blood pressure, the fleas would be more inclined to try to grab a snack from anything nearby with a pulse.

Fast-acting would be optimum.

My dog, Luempe, would do that with gophers. We'd find a burrow, I'd position a shovel about 1-1/2 gopherlengths back from the entrance, we'd wait for him to poke his nose out.....then I'd slide the shovel in, flip it over, Luempe would grab 'im, and I'd back up so as not to get sprayed.

The things about poison: (1) what if it gets loose? You don't want to be slaughtering your neighbors cats.....word might get around. (2) what if it isn't dosed right? Rats are easy because they have no vomit reflex -- when you're poisoning rats, use boatloads. (3) what if the animal survives? Then you've got a sick and suffering one. There's a lot to be said for tender traps/gassing.

If you're looking for toxic, tylenol is much more lethal than aspirin. In the US and UK, acetaminophen (the active ingredient) has been either the #1 or #2 cause of acute liver failure for a while. It has one of the smallest gaps between "minimum effective dose" and "lethal dose for 50% [LD50]" of anything over-the-counter. Myself, I won't allow it in the house and think it should be outright banned.

I would suspect that it would also be effective on raccoons, but would have to do research to be sure. Of course, it's probably also effective on da kittehs and da doggehs.

554 My dog, Luempe, would do that with gophers. .... Luempe would grab 'im,

We can do that. We don't even need a reason.

Our reason was usually something like "Sunday afternoon in the backyard."

BTW, the dog's name has an umlauted u -- normally spelled as ue for retarded typesetters -- means "rascal" in German, and is supposedly a common name for pet dogs. Named from a 7th-grade German lesson that had "Luempe hat Katze nicht gern" in it.

556 LOL, love that cat gif

As for the largest holder of US debt, I posted a link last month to an article (WSJ?) that said China was no longer the largest holder of US debt.

They have been passed (by a large amount) by the Fed due to the Treasury simply printing money (ie selling bonds to the Fed).  China had been selling off US treasuries when they started this QE BS.

Yeah, understood.

The tender trap would be in the attic, closed up to other animals...well, on second thought, if the coons are getting in there, then other critters could too, I guess.

But I haven't seen a cat around here in quite a while.

The coyotes have been wiping out any strays in the area...and my neighbors don't have cats anymore, for that reason.

It's been pretty cold here lately, down in the single digits.

So hopefully that will have knocked down the onboard flea population on these raccoons.

But I still intend to spray the bodies before getting them out of the trap.

According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acetaminophen -- Tylenol blows up the oxygen transport function in cats -- so they don't get liver damage, they suffocate. Dogs get liver damage, like humans.

I can understand the triumph of a successful hunt, but I've always been squeamish about fleas and ticks on the prey animal and would want to be very businesslike about handling it.

Cthulhu, thanks for all the help...I'll have to check into finding some nitrogen gas.

If I can't find any, then it will either be lead to the head or figure out a poison to use.

Gotta get them out of the attic.

For many reasons.

Now that the sun is coming up...they've gotten quiet. Of course.

Rain? Aren't you in Cali? ....It's been really dry there, hasn't it?

We're supposed to get snow today, starting any time now from the looks of radar.

Again: never have nitrogen in an enclosed space -- there is no lead-up or warning, because it's 70% of air to start with. CO2 will cause panting and suffocation panic; helium will cause squeaky voices and other "WTF is going on?" phenomena.....but nitrogen is "clunk." YOUR SAFETY IS #1.

We had a dog that killed a skunk that way. It was hilarious how a cute young golden retriever could instantly morph into a stone cold killer.

Yeah, when that instinct kicks in, it's a thing to behold isn't it.

My big doggie is a mix of sheppard, chow and something big. Not sure what exactly.

He has no interest in birds, and I kinda love that about him.

But furry things...he goes on target alert.

Sorry to be late in replying, forgive me, I'm sleep deprived.

I keep getting bumped off too, with this twitchy dsl that we've got...and when I come back I miss things.

if you are still around, Amazon (via AoS of course) still has commercial Cascade dishwasher detergent in the six pack, but the price has roughly doubled since I first bought some based on recommendations here.  The box lasts me about  month and does the job.  My glassware still seems to be OK.  I have been waiting for them to outlaw TSP, but you can still get it here as a cleaner degreaser in the Paint section.

Regarding Tylenol, my physician was commenting on the fact that kids can't ride bikes without helmets, but you can buy enough Tylenol over the counter to kill a family several times over.

I note that our gummint FDA, in the spirit of looking out for you, makes sure that low level pain narcotics (Percocet and Vicodin) have a mandated hefty "Tylenol" component to help insure you won't suffer long.

Uhhh....not really. The narcotics combined with NSAIDs work better than when they are given alone.

Although your larger point is 100%.

573 Gotta get them out of the attic. For many reasons. CBD, I do not have to read all of it to suspect that itÂ’s squirrels in your attic. Am I right? Twice I though I was going to have a heart attack, seriously, because one got into the house. I heard noise like cat scratching behind the couch, only problem was cat died in the summer of that year. I had to go downstairs & wake up my older brother, it was winter & he was in his only in his underwear. That couch has a skirt? at the bottom and my brother didnÂ’t believe me. He moved couch and it wasnÂ’t behind it. They the damn rodent ran out from under skirt on couch. That was in 1995 or 1996. Second time was in 2007 or2008. We had huge snow storm on Friday & I had a banana on the table. WhenI came home, I dismissed what looked like the banana exploding, which was really stupid. The next morning I woke up too early, it was treacherous out as far as driving went. I ate the last of 4 pack of Dunkin Donuts blueberry muffins. I had gone to drive through on my way home Friday to pick up another box of four. I went back to sleep. When I woke up the kitchen table was a mess, something attacked new box of muffins. My older brother was out shopping & when he got back I showed him mess & we looked everywhere for the thing. We think he came in when he had bulkhead open to bring out snowblower. I live in pain and I take Valium as muscle relaxer. I tossed remaining muffin that it went after & ground up 3 Valium & spread on top of remaining muffins. I heard nothing, then brother was out again & I heard something with claws in kitchen floor. Squirrel ignored muffins & I had him trapped behind cabinet that has microwave, armed with two household cleaning sprays that said they can cause blindness or serious injury to eyes. It tried to come out one side & I sprayed it, then other side & I did same. It ran out into living room. I had to take an extra valium. I looked everywhere & found it behind curio where my mother had all her very expensive Hummels. I called a friend to come over & he said he couldnÂ’t come over then. I cornered it with the vacuum cleaner. Any cat or dog I had had as a pet was terrified of vacuum. I stood in hall with vacuum pointed towards it. My brother finally came back & we tried to catch it in a towel but the rodent was too fast, We finally got it, after about 1/2 hour to get it down the stairs & let it out. Next day my older brother told me I should have called our next door neighbor., who grew up on a farm in IL & has had gun since he was a kid. He would have known how to get it out. I know he couldnÂ’t shoot it here in Massachusetts. Typing this is giving me case of the creeps thinking about the damn things. Good luck what ever it may be in attic!
