The Weekly Standard has a piece nicely illustrating my point on the last podcast about the government being the main obstacle to economic dynamism. Pity the poor bureaucrats.

Speaking of innovations that can spur the economy, have you heard about the crowdfunding project for a movie about Kermit Gosnell's house of abortion horrors? Well you wouldn't have if Kickstarter had their way.

And of course my favorite leftist boot on the neck of the economy comes from the greens, who just got the 5th installment of the IPCC's report on Global Warming or whatever they're calling it now. The Heartland Institute has a report from the climate realist side that rubbishes any claim of "consensus" (for whatever that's worth) but it's hard for people to hear about it when the newsertainment business propagandizes for the other side.

1 Good Morning Morons.  Today is Monday, April 14, 2014.  On this day in 1846 the ill fated Donner Party of pioneers departed Springfield, Illinois, for California, on what will become a year-long journey of hardship, cannibalism, and survival.  If you ever drive out of Reno, NV to northern CA on I-80 you will pass Donner Summit (and a lot of other stuff named Donner).  The actual location where the Donner Party met their fate however is a few miles off I-80 on the old Lincoln Highway.  Their big mistake?  They waited to late to start the trip and when the reached the mountains instead of stopping at a settlement they decided to move on through the pass.  I can tell you from personal experience that even I-80 gets blocked by snow at times in the winter.  Imagine trying to do that in the winter with wagons and no roads.

2 More information on the Kansas City shooting and the shooter.  He has been identified as a former KKK member from NC (now living in MO) and had also belonged to some other hate groups.  He has a long and sordid history.  What is odd here is that if he was a white supremacist as they say here why was he killing white people?  I believe the neo-Nazi report we had yesterday is probably more accurate.  Police are now calling this a hate crime.  He does qualify for the death penalty in KS but it is unlikely he will ever be executed.  KS has always been a reluctant death penalty State and they haven't executed anyone since 1965.  My opinion, "some people just need killin" and this is one of them.

4 If you live in MD (why) and have tried to buy a gun lately you know that there is a long backlog on checks and issuance of a permit.  That somehow has allowed 360 guns to be sold to felons and others who are not supposed to have guns.  Yeah, the gun control laws really work don't they.

Would-be gun buyers in the state must pass a background check conducted by Maryland State Police. But a gun can still be sold without a background check if state troopers are unable to complete it within seven days and the dealer has no reason to believe the person purchasing the weapon is ineligible.

I suspect that that 7 day pass will go away soon.

27 And finally I have been trying to track down this BS of the Obamanites garnisheeing tax refunds based on ancient debts of parents or other ancestors.  I have found quite a bit of information.  This program has been going now for 3 years and it is worse than you think.  And it is ILLEGAL as I expected.

First here is a link to an article giving a good description.  One thing that is amazing is that nobody in any branch of government will take credit for this POS.

And here is the amended code. Note that nowhere in the actual code does it allow the government to go after debts by hitting the children or descendents.  And they are also required to notify the "debtor" which isn't the children of the debtor.  Note also that debt collection laws say that the "estate" is responsible for debts of deceased debtors.  If they failed to collect from the estate then they are SOL.  From the code:

(a) After trying to collect a claim from a person under section 3711 (a) of this title, the head of an executive, judicial, or legislative agency may collect the claim by administrative offset. The head of the agency may collect by administrative offset only after giving the debtor—
(1) written notice of the type and amount of the claim, the intention of the head of the agency to collect the claim by administrative offset, and an explanation of the rights of the debtor under this section;
(2) an opportunity to inspect and copy the records of the agency related to the claim;
(3) an opportunity for a review within the agency of the decision of the agency related to the claim; and
(4) an opportunity to make a written agreement with the head of the agency to repay the amount of the claim.

The government has not complied with ANY of this.  But not to worry, once all the civil suits are settled you will be paying for it if you pay taxes and this administration go liars and crooks will never be held accountable.

Morning, ‘rons and ‘ronettes.

IÂ’ve never been a Lauren Bacall fan, but hereÂ’s a cute story about her:  when she first came to Hollywood, she felt out of place at parties.  While she was “sponsored” by director Howard Hawks, she was uncomfortable because, being a newcomer, she had no standing and because she neither smoke nor drank while everyone else did.

It turned out that Hawks gave a party at his house one night and found, to his dismay, that he had to drive Bacall home.  “WhatÂ’s the matter?” he asked, a little irritably.  “CouldnÂ’t you get someone to offer you a ride?”

“I don’t get along too well with these people,” Bacall admitted.

“Are you nice to them?”

“I try to be.”

Hawks wondered how he could help his protégé.  Finally, as he dropped her off at her apartment, he said, “DonÂ’t be nice the next time.  Try insulting people and see if you do any better.”

A week passed, and the following Saturday, Bacall was a guest at another Hawks party.  When it ended, she went up to him and told him proudly, “I got a ride home.”

“Good for you,” Hawks said.  “What did you do?”

“I insulted a man.  I asked him where he got his tie.  He said, ‘Why do you want to know?Â’ I said, ‘So I can tell other people not to go there.’”

Hawks was delighted.  “Who was the man?” he asked.

Smiling, Bacall replied, “Clark Gable.”

HereÂ’s a young Bacall around the time of the story:

And here she is with Bogie in The Big Sleep:

42 Over at AmericanThinker.com, a story on Kathleen Syphillis and her horrific record as KS governor. Here's a taste: During Sebelius’s six years as governor, women came from 48 states and points beyond to have late-term abortions in Kansas. They came not because Kansas had uniquely liberal abortion laws. They came because Sebelius was uniquely hostile to the law’s enforcement. The state’s most efficient practitioner of this dubious art, the late Dr. George Tiller of Wichita, boasted on his website of having “more experience in late abortion services with fetuses over 24 weeks than anywhere else in the Western Hemisphere.” What Tiller’s website did not say is that during the six years of Sebelius’s reign as governor, he ended the lives of thousands of healthy babies ready to be born, in full violation of state law. Nor did the website tell how Sebelius personally intervened to let the carnage continue. This was no small task. To succeed, she had to destroy her Republican attorney general, Phill Kline, who was hot on Tiller’s trail.

I'm currently taking an introductory course at the nearby regional state school and the professor (an Australian astrophysicist by speciality) is fairly even-handed in her treatment of the subject. She's been building up to her discussion on AGW for the entire semester and then dropped the fucking hammer on the alarmist camp. I try to stay fairly well-informed on the subject, but she's been covering scientific angles to this I'd not heard of. She's so nice and mild-mannered, and matter of fact, but supremely logical, well-informed and just brutal (in an academic way) on the AGW crowd. This is to one of those big lecture halls full of 18-20 year olds. It give me hope.

That's the great crime here.  Not that you have a handful of charlatans trying to perpetuate their belief system with a bunch of bogus claims about the "science" they've settled on.

It's that there is not a howling reaction from  the  so-called scientific community  at the egregious abuse of the concept of science by these people.  Their silence makes them complicit.

71 Newsertainment! Heh. If you tried to watch 60 Minutes last evening, you got to see a pretty nice piece on Pope Francis, but then they could not help themselves. It was almost as if they did it as a lead into the segment with Steve "Lapdog" Kroft "interviewing" Our Fucking Emperor, with the Liar-in-Chief going on about how he and Francis had a nice private tete-a-tete all about inequality. Yeah. Inequality. The defining issue of our day. And how Francis is going to help King Fuckface overcome it and all. And Kroft? Big smiles, nods. Shit, anything at all ol' Barry wants to mouth off is fine with him. After all, it was him and Valerie that demanded the air time. Wasn't it.

I'd hoped, by mid-April, it might be off for the summer. But, no. As we got home last night, Milady says she forgot to bring coffee. It's only been on the shopping list for days. Although our daughter's friend's hens are laying again, the delivery chain has problems and the eggs aren't here, either. And there's no bacon. Then I dropped the cell, and it lost the net for several minutes, along with my blazingly brilliant first comment of the day you'll never get to see now. It was about Hillary! I had a cup of some awful sweet instant stuff, and at least we had some pancakes left over from yesterday, so it's not all bad. But I think I'd better run in and get some real coffee. Weird. Almost feels like Monday. Morning, Glories. Jesus bless the horde this week with truth, and just enough wisdom to stay Morons. ___ Noah II Latest vid webwork 40sec click nick.

86 There must be a huge disconnect between the commies at CBS news and the rest of the network because the programming of shows like CSI and Person of Interest is reasonably balanced.  For example they don't insult the intelligence of viewers like the shitheads of Law and Order do by claiming that "neo Nazi skinheads" are the *real* problem of NYC.  The stupidity of that mindset is pretty fucking depressing.

Yes, Some Republicans Are Racist
By Michael Tomasky The Daily Beast

it’s supposed to be controversial when Rep. Steve Israel (D-NY) says, as he did Sunday on CNN, that “to a significant extent, the Republican base does have elements that are animated by racism”? Please. You have to be living a life of willed ignorance and denial to take issue with what Israel said...

Say you were a Republican political consultant. Would you ever in a jillion years suggest that your candidate take on racism within the GOP as a speech topic? You most certainly would not. Your candidate would be dead immediately. I mean metaphorically, but depending on the part of the country in which the speech was given, maybe literally, too.

Morning Anna!

I was reading a book about genetics yesterday and one chapter went into detail about Japan's only officially recognized "double bombing" survivor.  I believe his surname was Yamaguchi.  He was late going into work at Mitsubishi in Hiroshima.  He had forgotten something at his boarding house and went back to get it, and by the time he was back on his way the bomb had hit and he was spared the worst of it.  He still got badly injured though.  All he wanted to do was get back home to his wife and child, so he fought his way to a train that would take him back to his home....

....in Nagasaki.

Guess what happened the next day?  He said he thought the mushroom cloud had followed him home.  He got double the massive dose of radiation and suffered horrible burns.  However, he lived to the age of 93 when he died of stomach cancer in 2010.

Oh man, I LOVE Red Green!   I watched it all the time when I was a teen/tween.    I've got my favorite seasons on DVD (1994-1996, I believe), and I can still recite most of the dialogue right along with the characters.   Love love love love LOOOOOVE it.

171 VIA I used to build new home in the Rehobeth area. Lunch was generally taken at the nearest bar. About eight of us walk into a local place and order lunch? Carpenters with mud on our boots and clothes. About halfway through my sandwich, I look around and notice the place is all female. Then I notice the hostile looks, short hair and flannel. We had accidentally invaded a lesbian bar. Man, are they ever friendly.

178 I know that name, never seen the show though. My father-in-law got to see Red Greene in person, and took a picture with him. They look like twin brothers. As for the story- really, all the funny is in the one-liner. Friday morning, after I'd gotten dressed (I can do this in my closet, so I don't wake up my wife), I went from the bathroom into my bedroom. In the dark, I ran (gently) into my dog. I like my dog, that's why he's my dog. So I decided to bend down and pet him a little. However, in the dark and at 6:15 AM, I did not pause to think about where I was in relation to furniture. The corner of a chest of drawers met me half-way down. I'd say it won the fight.

179 What is really disappointing is the silence of the "scientific community" when frauds like ManBearPig come out with their dogshit pronouncements of the "science is settled" which flies in the face of what the scientific method is about. Even if you intuitively believe in the conclusion, you would have to be appalled at the lack of transparency about the data and the lack of procedural rigor in arriving at the results. Plus anybody with a purportedly functioning cortex that thinks that one compound found in extremely small quantities is *the* determining factor in something as complex as climate has to be borderline delusional.

Police reportedly started investigating after residents who were cleaning out a garage and discovered a dead infant inside a container. When authorities arrived, they found the infant to be at full term, according to a press release from the Pleasant Grove Police Department and Fox 13 News. Officers obtained a search warrant and discovered six other infant bodies — all stored in separate containers. I think I heard that she was divorced and not one of these victims were the husbands.

219 In Russia's takeover of Ukraine, the WSJ's Matthew Kaminski reports, "Russian intelligence and special forces on Saturday directed local crime bosses and thugs in coordinated attacks on police stations and other government buildings in town across eastern Ukraine." I just finished a novel about the US falling apart after a muzzie-directed EMP nuke disables the grid west of the Rockies, and SoCal is in total chaos. President Hillary Clinton allows Mexico to come in and "stabilize" everything from Tijuana up to about San Luis Obispo, and Mexican CIA and special forces types, no insignias on uniforms, do the same thing to SoCal. Kill all the cops, kill all the government people, let about 45 million die from starvation and disease, and use the hispanic drug gangs as puppets and killers. Hillary's goal is to save the Democrat party apparatus in SoCal, but the Mexicans have a different idea. Tell her thanks for the invite, hey, we'll help, then do what they want. And what they want is to kill all the gringos and take it all back. Like it was before. Hillary gets impeached. And convicted. But it is interesting how, in reality, a takeover in a country where the people are not widely in possession of guns and ammo, readily happens when the invaders engage the gangs as allies, and move quickly to neutralize the cops and the pols.

tsr, is it some special kind of ice at the poles? Last I heard, 90% of an iceberg was below the waterline. Same is true of the polar icecaps.

BUT, there's also the melting of ice on the continents and islands. That would add to overall water in the ocean.  There's actually a theory (Graham Hancock) that when the Ice Ages ended, the continental ice caps melted largely from the ground up, so there were large sheets of ice floating on water that eventually worked their way downhill, gaining speed, and crashed into things including the ocean, causing tsunamis. Not sure I buy it, because I think the underlying water would work its way downhill before the ice floating on top of it, which would mean the ice wouldn't be floating any more. But it's fun to visualize. No question, however, that there are places on the Earth that are under water now that weren't during the Ice Ages.  http://www.grahamhancock.com/gallery/underwater/

The water that is displaced equals the mass of the ice, the reason the ice floats is because of the air trapped in it. Melting the ice, just as in the glass experiment, will not raise the sea levels even a little bit.

I don't think it's air trapped in it, I think it's that the solid form of water has a molecular structure that is less dense than the liquid form.

If I might advise just from a practical viewpoint, if you get more involved in anything demanding, do so gradually, as you can handle it. You're only human. Sometimes we take on new things, but too much too soon, especially so with the spiritually enthused, and we end up trying before we're ready to juggle too many flaming chainsaws. Then we burn out. Acclimatization is how we adjust and adapt. pax

251 Vic "And here is the amended code. Note that nowhere in the actual code does it allow the government to go after debts by hitting the children or descendants. And they are also required to notify the "debtor" which isn't the children of the debtor. Note also that debt collection laws say that the "estate" is responsible for debts of deceased debtors. If they failed to collect from the estate then they are SOL." A couple of threads later, so probably no one reading this, but.... Vic hits the nail on the head here. Most states operate under some version of the Uniform probate Code. The UPC requires the estate to notify known creditors and to publish notice to unknown creditors. That would include these claims. If the creditor fails to make a claim against the estate w/in 4 months, they are SOL. It doesn't matter whether the kids received money from the estate and it doesn't look like the Feds are even making that argument.
