FFFFRIDAAAAY!

President Bush. Love the guy.

McDonald's is suspending operations in Crimea and offering to relocate its employees and their families to Ukraine.

Sec. Kerry says the State Department will reevaluate its involvement in the Middle East peace process, given its utter failure to provide him a launchpad for a 2016 run. Krauthammer's acerbic column on this is a must-read.

For some fun, BusinessWeek has a long read on Kevin Feige, one of the dudes running the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I think they've done a great job with these and plan to see the new Captain America film this weekend.

The AOSHQ Podcast will be up later. We had David Freddoso of Conservative Intel and it was a riot. There were a lot of good Ask the Blog questions this week. Thanks for that.

Have a great weekend.

In before Teh Vic?

Morning, ‘rons and ‘ronettes.  IÂ’m dropping in for a short Friday story.

IÂ’ve told you before about Dr. Harry Watson Martin, the husband of ferocious gossip columnist Louella Parsons.  Known as “Docky” and “LollyÂ’s Pop,” he was a specialist in venereal disease and urology and headed up the Twentieth Century-Fox medical department.  He got a great many professional calls from actors and actresses because they knew Parsons appreciated their using him; through DockyÂ’s office, the columnist often found out an actress was pregnant before the girl herself knew.

Watson and Parsons were both alcoholics, and both were also fans of the sweet science of boxing.  It so happened that, one evening ringside, a heavyweight challenger crashed to the canvas; it looked like he had been hit below the belt and the cry for a doctor went out.

Docky hurried to the manÂ’s side and peered under his trunks to determine the extent of any injury.  From high up in the stands, a voice yelled, “Hey, doc, he ainÂ’t got gonorrhea – heÂ’s just bushed!”

And hereÂ’s our usual Friday Ziegfeld girl, the moodily beautiful Anne Lee Patterson:

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend.

12 Someone has their facts wrong. Either the source(s) ace used yesterday on Eich and how Prop 8 donors got outed, or First Things via WZ:

http://tinyurl.com/qg78b5j

Per First Things, the exposed donor list was the result of a leaked copy of the tax return of a pro marriage group in 2012 by someone in the IRS to a gay advocacy group.

Leaking tax return info is, of course, a felony.

But if First Things has it right, then the whole Eich thoughtcrime is even worse than reported here yesterday.

New York City must pay $46,000 for a 20-year-old male foster child to undergo surgery to become a woman, ruled a judge.

Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Peter Moulton ordered that the ACS must pay for the genital 'reassignment, facial feminization, tracheal shaving, breast augmentation, and laser hair removal' of the plaintiff identified as D.F.

The Judge referenced the prejudice against transgendered people and said it will make it difficult for the plaintiff to raise the money for the procedures on her own once she is out of foster care.

Moulton said that the city was being 'arbitrary and capricious' in denying the funding for D.F's surgery. 'Payment by ACS for necessary medical procedures may be a transgendered youth’s only chance to achieve congruence between her gender identity and her physical appearance,” the judge wrote.'

The judge wrote that D.F. is estranged from her family and has no high- school diploma. “Certainly for the near future, her inability to pay for the procedures is clear,” Moulton wrote, slamming the city for being “arbitrary and capricious” in denying the funding. We'll have to agree to disagree on this one. If it was so subtle that *I* couldn't pick up on it while actively looking for it (not that I'm the brightest star in the sky), then I doubt very seriously the vast majority of audiences did. IRT to the first movie, I seem to recall a strong connection between the Nazis and Hydra, with the Hydra guys being too Nazi for even the Nazis. Close enough for me, and I can't really see how that's an anti-right-wing message anyway. I guess we'll see about #2.

Producer Kevin Feige- In our attempt to make all of our films feel unique and feel different we found ourselves going back to things like [Three Days of the Condor]. Also the other political thrillers of the '70s: The Parallax View, All the President's Men. This was a time that Cap existed in in the comics. He found himself in the swinging '60s followed by the Watergate Era followed by the Reagan Era followed by where we are today. In the comics it was a hell of a journey for Steve. And we couldn't take him through those years because in our cinematic universe he was asleep. But we wanted to force him to confront that kind of moral conundrum, something with that '70s flavor. And in our film that takes the form of S.H.I.E.L.D. Yes SHIELD itself is corrupt and evil now and Cap must "take America back" or whatever.... I look back at the attacks on the right and realize they started when I was -4.

Good news, every Juan!:

Enrollment by Latinos in California's healthcare insurance exchange surged in the final month of sign-ups after an intensive push to reach that key population. Latino sign-ups made up about 36% of the March enrollments — compared with around 18% of those in October, November and December. Overall, about 252,000 Latinos had signed up through Covered California — making up more than a quarter of the total.

LATimes

On a completely unrelated note, it was reveled earlier this year that Covered California was automatically giving everyone who "qualified" for MediCal "temporary" coverage because they couldn't actually determine who was eligible and who was not.

That should only happen in conjunction with the FN key. Usually that key will have a different font color and the function key will have symbols in the same color indicating the connected operations, like adjusting the backlight brightness of the display or speaker volume.

If you're getting FN operations instead of Refresh from pressing F5 by itself, you need to check whether the FN key has gotten locked or stuck. I've seen a fair number of laptops where the key was stuck because the user tended to rest their hand there instead of lower down.

First Things doesn't have it right.  There's a public discloser law in California for state political donations. That's how Team Hissfit got the dox.

There was a lawsuit by Prop 8 donors trying to keep their list confidential because they were concerned their info would be used against them, like trying to get them fired or something.

I haven't looked at the figures yet, but in general, anything in that range is not far above stall speed.

In order to get the great masses of unemployed and underemployed Americans back on their feet, the country needs to be cranking out 400K or more jobs a month.

So: continued stagflation.

Also, the internals on the job numbers have been consistently horrible in terms of the proportion of part-time to full-time jobs. Watch that like a hawk.

240 I think probably having monasteries pillaged and burnt, monks killed, nuns and local citizens raped and sold into slavery probably put on a damper on the enthusiasm for Christian writers about Vikings. Did they do some good and interesting things? Was their culture interesting? Of course, but let's not pretend they were entirely heroic folks anymore than all the Christians were. They were not anything like Nazis however.

243 In fact, if the experiment proved anything, it's that to minimize bacon shrinkage, you should cook your bacon in the oven.

On a cookie tray, with parchment paper. If you choose your bacon carefully, and it has a high percentage of meat to fat, there is almost zero grease to deal with. I cook on middle shelf @ 350 for ten minutes, flip, then cook for another ten. Perfect bacon, every time. Very little shrinkage.

Sun Ra was very nutty but I don't think drugs were the reason.  He was extremely well read but exhibited the perils of an autodidact in not understanding contextually what he was reading (ie. he read everything to validate him being from outer space).  He was also an extremely original keyboard player and composer; and ran a very tight ship as far as practice and performance went.  I probably saw the group at least a half dozen times and enjoyed them very much; although the first time was in the 70s when he was really laying on the weird synthesizer sounds and my tastes were more for rock and the experience left me very confused.

280 I don't think the parchment keeps the grease down. It keeps your cookie sheets nice and clean. Also the bacon doesn't stick to the parchment that well. After the cookie sheet and parchment cool down the fat will congeal, so you just pick up the parchment, fold it over, and toss it in the trash.

Now I hate to clean an oven, and I notice that high temperatures make the bacon splatter, and at 350 degrees the splatter is pretty much non-existent.

289 Posted by: 98ZJUSMC Rounding Error Extraordinaire at April 04, 2014 08:53 AM (+5b9y) It's certainly an oversimplification, by a long stretch. Even if we upped the salary to $1million/year, the very nature of politics right now is that it costs a lot of money to run campaigns, which tend to attract wealthy people (or people who know wealthy people.) And still would. The idea that we need to spend more on salaries to attract better technocrats is ludicrous. We need a smaller government to let spontaneous order do it's thing.

303 And the reason why the Vikings went roving out to sea in the first place was the loss of farmland due to Climate Change? Funny that. Probably not, at least as a primarily motive - the timing doesn't actually work out right for that theory, IIRC, and there doesn't seem to be any evidence of a population boom in Scandinavia during that time. On the other hand, there was a major power struggle in Denmark that resulted in the displacement of a number of aristocratic families right before the sudden spike in raids that heralded the beginning of the Viking age, and it is likely that the raids were attempts of the losing families to restore their wealth and position. Scandinavians had been raiding each other and outsiders for centuries, it is just that the intensity picked up remarkably after 800 or so. As a matter of fact, the Saxons, Franks, et al were pulling Viking-style raids on Roman Britain back in the 3rd century.

313 Finally ran a self-cleaning cycle. The heat thus generated fried the quite expensive computer brain. Brilliant design there. Three months out of warranty, or something like that. Back to manual cleaning. Posted by: torquewrench at April 04, 2014 08:50 AM (noWW6) Had the same thing happen to my build-in GE Profile. The heat eventually fried the motherboard and it costs 350-ish to replace the board and about 500-ish for a new unit. I said fuck it, use the oven for storage (works great!) and bought a countertop Oster. The Oster looks nice, can do two 13" pizzas at a time (complete bonus) and does most baking better, actually. Less Kitchen heat in the summer is a big plus, too.

314 >>> Similar deal but, 40k, and I'd want some sort of travel schedule to get me back home. Nothing opulent there, maybe every other weekend while in session by some cheap (but reasonably fast) method. Free travel to and from DC for the five month session (May-Sept). We'll also spring for Internet so you can video coference with the family.

315 "I always thought Jackie Mason had a good solution for Congressional compensation: "Put 'em all on commission!" If the government runs a surplus they get a percentage, if it runs a deficit they get nothing. I think the deficit would disappear really quickly if that were the case..." Posted by: Nighthawk at April 04, 2014 09:05 AM (OtQXp) This is the right frame of mind. Give them an incentive to save money in the federal budget instead of just relying on finding 535 people who will do the right thing out of the goodness in their hearts.

317 Congressional salary: median income of the area or state you represent, plus travel expenses to and from home state. Housing allowance based on average rental of an apartment in Baltimore.

318 Posted by: fluffy at April 04, 2014 09:07 AM (Ua6T/) If my wife can keep her job as well (i.e. it's not a requirement that she give it up.) That and $40k would be plenty for me . I probably wouldn't hang around too long, but that's sorta the idea is it not? Cylce through people. Jwest's problem is that (as I noted above) he assumes all we need is a better class of technocrat to run the leviathan, I reject that notion. We need to get rid of the leviathan and replace it with something less leviathan-y (eh, I ran out of cool words, sorry.)

321 The idea that we need to spend more on salaries to attract better technocrats is ludicrous. We need a smaller government to let spontaneous order do it's thing. Posted by: tsrblke, PhD(c) (No Really!) at April 04, 2014 08:57 AM (HDwDg) And really, who goes into politics for the money? It's all about power which is why it constantly grows. If anyone thinks their "salary" is their entire compensation (not counting under the table - *wink wink*), they're deluding themselves.

323 Posted by: grammie winger at April 04, 2014 09:09 AM (oMKp3) Heh, that would actually raise the salary I had suggested earlier (at least for this district.) But, IMHO, not a bad plan. Still, Congressmen make what $110k/year? There abouts. (They're salary alone, not all the other "perks" or "deals" or "insider trades.") Certainly more than the average American. More than some doctors even. And yet, the argument is we can't find good ones because we pay to little. No, it seems something else is at work here....

The salary they receive is just small potatoes.

As far as the "better class of technocrat" that could be partly true. I believe we need to make it feasible for someone who is a reasonably successful business owner, executive, farmer, lawyer, doctor, etc. to run for office without having to lower their standard of living. Right now, you can only attract the Sheila Jackson Lee's of the world or multi-millionaires. Those in the middle are priced out of the job. Also, I believe no one who is a representative should be in a position that they worry how to pay the bills back home and the living expenses in D.C. Let them focus on reducing the size of the government and eliminating unneeded programs.

333 Posted by: jwest at April 04, 2014 09:17 AM (u2a4R) And I'm saying that oversimplifies the situation greatly anyway. Salary is hardly the only source of income for these congressmen. But the barrier to entry as it were occurs long before election. It occurs during the campaign cycle. So unless your next suggestion is to argue for government funded campaigns (complete with a salary for candidates) anything about tweaking salary is like trying put back together a shattered vase.

Unless someone is independently wealthy, their salary should be the only source of income. Yes, I have proposed changes in the campaign finance laws (for years now, the latest being yesterday) that allows unlimited contributions to the challenger and public matching for the incumbent. This would make it easier for anyone to run for an office and eliminate the need for elected officials to spend 80% of the their time trying to raise money.

Posted by: jwest at April 04, 2014 05:34 AM (u2a4R)

335 Unless someone is independently wealthy, their salary should be the only source of income. Because congressmen don't ever give paid speeches or other things that get honorariums. You can't invest. And no business can be structured to run while it's owner is doing other things. (Some, certainly can't. All, no.) Oh and people who may actually legitimately support the incumbent can't exercise their speech rights by trying to get him elected again? (Plus, we just created more government spending.) It's oversimplification all the way down!

336 I screened my new movie last night at the midnight showing. Really good. I tried to find conservative bashing, but couldn't see it. Seemed more like an indictment of Obama and the NSA's overreach in recent years.

It just needs to be in a "blind trust" where, supposedly, they don't have control. Same with a business. As far as people who want to support an incumbent, they can do that through independent expenditure groups. Once someone is on the federal payroll, it should be a felony to solicit or accept any money from anyone.

"Maybe Wendy Davis will toss her hat in the ring!"

The name I keep hearing among my lefty acquaintances is Fauxahontas. Which makes a weird kind of sense: running an untested, inexperienced ideologue serving a first term in the Senate, whose only assets are a photogenic smile and the fact of not being a white male, worked well for them in 2008 - so why not again?
