Whoa
— Ace

Time-lapse photography so good you'll have to say "FAKE!!!"

Damn, this is pretty impressive. Storms, the Milky Way, buttes, and cornfields. What's not to like?

It's like the trailer for the next True Detective. The killer will violate people with corn.

It was shot by a guy called Randy Halverston, who calls it "Dakotalapse."

Very sweet pictures. You could take any eight of them and insert them into Cosmos tomorrow and people would say "Wow, professional shots." If I'm reading him right he caught all of this in just six days.

Thanks to @rdbrewer4. You might want to check out the Jovian photography in the sidebar, too.

And Open Thread.

Yup. I really hate the internet and would like to get out of it. I am really tired of all the Broken People who view the internet as their only means of expression. There's a reason it's their only means of expression: Because they've alienated every living soul in their lives with assholery. So now they're here. Yayyyy.

73 Auroral displays appear in many colours although pale green and pink are the most common. Shades of red, yellow, green, blue, and violet have been reported. The lights appear in many forms from patches or scattered clouds of light to streamers, arcs, rippling curtains or shooting rays that light up the sky with an eerie glow.

Posted by: thunderb at March 10, 2014 04:11 PM (zOTsN)

74 The Northern Lights are actually the result of collisions between gaseous particles in the Earth's atmosphere with charged particles released from the sun's atmosphere. Variations in colour are due to the type of gas particles that are colliding. The most common auroral color, a pale yellowish-green, is produced by oxygen molecules located about 60 miles above the earth. Rare, all-red auroras are produced by high-altitude oxygen, at heights of up to 200 miles. Nitrogen produces blue or purplish-red aurora. found it had to share explains why I have never seen the red ones no high altitude in ND

80 "They actually have announced that their goal is pro-science agitation, 'making the case for science.'"

I suspect you'll find that they're not so much interested in making the case for science as they are in making the case for Science.

Classic science involved doubt and debate and dissent and controversy.

Whereas Science can be, and is, "settled". No contrary opinion need raise its ugly head. In the world of Science, authority speaks with one loud, uniform voice.

And if you do harbor such a contrary opinion? Well, as we all know, Science is the source of everything good. And if you disagree with what Science says, you're "anti-Science". And hence an opponent of everything good.

Great visuals. Note that he's got the camera moving as well. Really well thought out.

Used to see the Lights pretty much every night while out in the field at Ft Greely, AK. Pretty good entertainment when you've been up for 72 hrs without sleep, freezing your nuts off in a foxhole pulling perimeter security at 3am. I always remembered them as white, though. Never saw much of the pretty colors, maybe a tiny tinge of green or blue if I was lucky.

I've never seen the Milky Way like that before, without magnification. Is that real, have any of you seen it like that from the ground with the naked eye?

127 Here's my theory on the internet: From ages 7 to about 11 or 12, we learned a lot of social rules on the playground. These rules were largely animal-like-- stuff about establishing dominance, bullying, selecting someone as the butt of a joke and then humiliating that person. From ages 12 - 18 or so, we learn a lot of socialization, and we learn things like "Just because you COULD bully someone, or you COULD say something nasty, or you COULD humiliate someone, doesn't mean you should." I think the internet empowers people to revert to a place where apparently they once flourished, or at least like a great deal more than any educated, socialized adult would admit. They liked the playground rules of ages 7-11. They see the internet as a way to unleash their inner 10 year old bully again. Well, we stopped acting that way at age 11-12 for a reason. Some people have this idea that "honesty" is most important. If they "honestly" feel like saying something nasty and trollish, why, the world would be a poorer place if they restrained themselves. But again, most of us spent our years from ages 11-16 learning how to NOT act like little wolves playing never-ending dominance and humiliation games, but to act as if we had a sense of empathy and cared, generally, about other people. In any political movement, you will find anti-social types -- who are anti-social because they are broken -- making the case that the Bestest Politics!!!! and Bestest Internet Discussions!!! are those in which the anti-social are permitted free reign. It just so happens that they think the Bestest Way to Be Online!!! conforms with their pre-existing anti-social, broken personality types. Well do the rest of us get a vote on this? Even someone who's not anti-social (such as myself) feels the tug of permissible anti-social behavior on the internet. But this, like all bad habits, should be restrained, not endlessly indulged.

134 Also with regard to classic _Cosmos_ and Carl Sagan:

Let's remember the extremely intellectually disreputable stuff that Sagan got into late in his life and career, the TTAPS "nuclear winter" hypothesis.

Sagan was a heavy-duty hippie, a left-wing pothead peacenik, a product of the 1960s campus left. So were a number of other Americans at the time, of course.

Except that the peacenik bloc including Sagan went to the rest of the country in the 1970s and said, "Hey, the USSR poses no real threat, let's unilaterally disarm and they'll follow."

The rest of the country shook their heads and said, "You clowns are cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs, the Commies want to kill us," and rejected the peacenik policies and voted for Reagan.

Sagan hated Reagan, hated Reagan's rearmament, hated SDI, hated all the things.

So how to get people to hate Reagan, as sensible sciency people should, and vote for sensible, sciency policies like unilateral nuclear disarmament?

Try to scare them. Presto. "Nuclear winter".

Which was a completely laughably overextended scheme involving wild guesses being plugged into supercomputer models (sound familiar?).

At the time of the first Gulf War, Sagan completely flipped out into full bore eleventy peacenik mode. He went out and gave television interviews claiming that if the war proceeded, and if Saddam burned the Kuwaiti oil fields, a miniature nuclear winter would follow. An absolutely incontrovertible climate signal that everyone would see and realize the sciency truth that war was obsolete as a policy tool.

Well, the war came, the oil fields were burned, and nothing fucking happened.

What do we call scientists whose theories are massively refuted by reality again? Oh, yes. INCOMPETENT.

Freeman Dyson and Richard Feynman, two guys with vastly superior chops to Sagan in physics, both basically said they thought the guy was a clown, using a contrived theory to front-run his politics.

Sagan was also one of the losers who claimed that it would never be technologically possible to intercept a ballistic missile in flight, because Science. And because Reagan. Who was an invariable object of the wrath of Carl.

An astronomy club hired him to give a presentation at one of their meetings. He arrived early and the club members helped him set up his audiovisual equipment, etc. He would say things like, "Hey Bob, move this over here." "Tom, put that over there." I'd question much of that on the conservative side.  Most of the "attacks" are not attacks against science or the scientific method, but disputes about the conclusions drawn or moral judgments.  For example, opposition by many groups to the use of embryonic stem cells in research is not "anti-science" any more than would be opposition to the vivisection of young children.  Questioning whether or not the proper solution to climate change is destruction of the Western economy and the condemnation of billions to starvation and death isn't anti-science either.

248 210 95% of people are broken. It is just a matter of how much they let it out. The reason we call people out for being wise or "having it together" is because they are so rare. Most people have so much psychological baggage they need a bellhop with a cart to lug it around. But you are right, the internet lets people be who they want to be in the absence of societal checks. The sad part is, when you see who some people really are it is pretty ugly.

Weirdest looking armored fighting vehicle ever. And with some major quirks/design issues.

273 261 just a final thought:

i occasionally submit your content to others via social media websites. unfortunately, oftentimes people won't even read the content because the layout of this site is from dubya's first term, and so they automatically assume these are just the ravings of some idiot.

as you well know (and as you certainly enjoy telling your readers from time to time), you're actually quite intelligent. so it's a shame that you lose out on potential future readers simply because you haven't felt sufficiently motivated to improve your site in about a decade.

300 I don't have TV, but apparently the first episode of the new Cosmos aired last night. Supposedly it was introduced by TFG. That alone makes it pretty dubious. Here is a post critiquing a segment of the show: http://tinyurl.com/m4kr6dx I'm also not a fan of Neil deGrasse Tyson. He wrote an article recently criticizing private space efforts and basically saying that only government can run a space program. He's entitled to his opinion, of course, but I disagree. As I like to say, "We need a private space industry, not a government space program." The government has been in charge for the last 40 years and all we've done is gone round and round the Earth. Yes, the government did Apollo, but that was part of the Cold War. As soon as we won the moon race, they lost interest and didn't build on their success.

310 Why should I have a comment on the True Detective thread? I've never seen the show, and don't intend to.  I read the post, and didn't feel I had anything to add to it that would be relevant. I didn't even have the reference points to know why or if what ace said was insightful.

So I skipped even reading the comments. My life didn't end because I didn't post on that thread. Or read the comments.

There's a concept known as signal to noise ratio, which can be applied to a variety of other things including comment sections. I first experienced it on Usenet, in the poker forum. At first, there was a ton of signal (info about poker) and very little noise (everything else). As time went on, the S/N ratio went to shit so bad that it became a waste of time to hunt through it for nuggets of actual info.

I 'fail to post' stuff I've typed up in the comment box here almost daily. I'm tempted to do it this time as well, but it should be heard. Before you whack that Post button, ask yourself 'Does what I've written contribute to this thread or to general knowledge, or is it just noise?'

And yes, boobeh pics qualify as signal under the general knowledge clause.

It gets better.

They actually tested releasing the canister from a bomber at night. Over New Mexico. The canister released, and opened at the right altitude, to free the bats, who were carrying live incendiary time bombs strapped to their legs, just as they would in a combat mission against Japan.

Then amidst the congratulations by the engineers, someone said HOLY MOTHER OF GOD, we never thought about what happens next. Are the bats carrying their live bombs going to go roost in homes and barns all over the release area? Will there be a spate of mystery fires we will have to explain?

Fortunately the bats had all frozen into immobility while at high altitude.

346 Mongolia’s climate has been changing even faster than in the rest of the world, with temperatures in parts of the country rising by as much as 4.5 F over the past 40 years. At the same time, the country has been hit by severe summer droughts followed by a dzud, or a long, harsh winter. The same tree rings that revealed the climactic history of the Mongol empire show that the most recent drought, from 2002 to 2009, compares in its severity only to those dry periods in the late 1100s. The droughts and the dzuds have killed millions of animals and ruined the livelihood of Mongolia’s herders, forcing them to more en masse to the swollen capital of Ulaanbaatar. Climate change is still putting Mongolians on the move—but this time, there’s no end in sight.

Dr Brannon has been found GUILTY of stock fraud in a civil lawsuit in Wake Co, NC and ordered to repay his former classmates $250,000 for misleading them, AKA lying. Stock fraud is the misleading of investors to induce them to buy your stock. In this case the jury found that Brannon, and ONLY Brannon, mislead his former classmates with a promise that Verizon was going to use their product. Verizon had said nothing of the sort. The jury found the inventor/co founder of the company innocent. I did not decide that, a jury did. I have given you references, do you want them again? It is NOT going away.

569 "So how much more conservative do you want Tillis to be?"

Although I am not a North Carolinian, I in general want all GOP Senate candidates to be so conservative that they make Mitch McConnell wake up with a start every night and pray,

"Please don't inflict any more of these troublemakers on me, Lord, with their crazy ideas about making the government smaller and behaving like there are limits on Presidential power. All I want is my place at the trough without any fuss and bother."

And I'm not sure Tillis is quite that conservative.

San Antone gets as hot as nuclear rocket exhaust. If that's an issue.

Also, the lefty crazee is getting very intense, at least inside the city limits of SA proper. That's the place where they passed a law saying in effect that if you're not comfortably down with teh ghey, you're not allowed to serve in city government.

679 One of the Iranian nationals' intended final destination was Frankfurt, where his mother lives, while the other wanted to travel to Denmark. The same source that spoke to BBC Persian also emailed CNN with a photograph of him posing with his two friends in the days before they embarked on their fateful trip. 693 "I think the internet empowers people to revert to a place where apparently they once flourished, or at least like a great deal more than any educated, socialized adult would admit. They liked the playground rules of ages 7-11. They see the internet as a way to unleash their inner 10 year old bully again. Well, we stopped acting that way at age 11-12 for a reason. "But this, like all bad habits, should be restrained, not endlessly indulged. " I wonder what the Internet could have become if this understanding had guided us. Could you imagine discussions between groups with opposing views that could carry out a reasoned debate; where they actually listened and remained rational? It's reached the point where all I hear are people attempting to out-scream insults and cliche slogans at one another. It's such an irony that the communication revolution has created so many people unable to listen; to others and to what they are communicating to people. Thanks.

694 It's reached the point where all I hear are people attempting to out-scream insults and cliche slogans at one another. This is what happens when people don't have to fear getting punched in the teeth for being an asshole. I also attribute that to the rise of the smarmy hipster. No way should a Matty Yglesias be allowed to walk outside in his purple suit and glasses without taking an ass beating.

695 #173 Not watching Cosmos because I don't like Tyson. I don't know that I don't *like* him, but I was trying to remember what he said that I thought was so dumb and I suddenly remembered it was about using science to extend life or to make us (for practical purposes) immortal. Gah! The dumb... it hurt. First, the premise that what makes us try to achieve anything at all is that we're aware of our impending deaths. That might work for someone with a terminal illness, but I don't know what reality he's in that he thinks people work hard for any other reason than to get stuff. And then he asked us to imagine what it would be like if no one died, as if practical immortality wouldn't change the starting circumstances or the behavior of humanity in the same way that people who expect to live and expect their children to live have far far fewer of them. Simple observation contradicted his silly "I wouldn't want us to extend life with science" emotionalism. And science fiction has explored the ideas for a century.
