— Ace Time-lapse photography so good you'll have to say "FAKE!!!"
Damn, this is pretty impressive. Storms, the Milky Way, buttes, and cornfields. What's not to like?
It's like the trailer for the next True Detective. The killer will violate people with corn.
It was shot by a guy called Randy Halverston, who calls it "Dakotalapse."
Very sweet pictures. You could take any eight of them and insert them into Cosmos tomorrow and people would say "Wow, professional shots." If I'm reading him right he caught all of this in just six days.
Thanks to @rdbrewer4. You might want to check out the Jovian photography in the sidebar, too.
And Open Thread.

I didn't realize that South Dakota got such spectacular views of the Aurora.
We never get even a smidgeon of it down in OK.
But then, if we did...it would probably mean that we were getting our transformers fried from a solar storm.

28 Okay then...... is the "Cosmos program" pretty much like the Sagan one, only updated?
I didn't watch it last night.
But I've been curious too, to know if it was any good.
The original Cosmos, with Sagan, was one of the few sources of cool astronomical photography....at that time.
Unlike now, when we can get it from the internet, etc.
I hope they didn't use it as another forum to push the global warming/climate change propaganda.

Which is exactly what has been happening.

I suspect you'll find that they're not so much interested in making the case for science as they are in making the case for Science.
Classic science involved doubt and debate and dissent and controversy.
Whereas Science can be, and is, "settled". No contrary opinion need raise its ugly head. In the world of Science, authority speaks with one loud, uniform voice.
And if you do harbor such a contrary opinion? Well, as we all know, Science is the source of everything good. And if you disagree with what Science says, you're "anti-Science". And hence an opponent of everything good.

Great visuals. Note that he's got the camera moving as well. Really well thought out.
Used to see the Lights pretty much every night while out in the field at Ft Greely, AK. Pretty good entertainment when you've been up for 72 hrs without sleep, freezing your nuts off in a foxhole pulling perimeter security at 3am. I always remembered them as white, though. Never saw much of the pretty colors, maybe a tiny tinge of green or blue if I was lucky.
I've never seen the Milky Way like that before, without magnification. Is that real, have any of you seen it like that from the ground with the naked eye?

Let's remember the extremely intellectually disreputable stuff that Sagan got into late in his life and career, the TTAPS "nuclear winter" hypothesis.
Sagan was a heavy-duty hippie, a left-wing pothead peacenik, a product of the 1960s campus left. So were a number of other Americans at the time, of course.
Except that the peacenik bloc including Sagan went to the rest of the country in the 1970s and said, "Hey, the USSR poses no real threat, let's unilaterally disarm and they'll follow."
The rest of the country shook their heads and said, "You clowns are cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs, the Commies want to kill us," and rejected the peacenik policies and voted for Reagan.
Sagan hated Reagan, hated Reagan's rearmament, hated SDI, hated all the things.
So how to get people to hate Reagan, as sensible sciency people should, and vote for sensible, sciency policies like unilateral nuclear disarmament?
Try to scare them. Presto. "Nuclear winter".
Which was a completely laughably overextended scheme involving wild guesses being plugged into supercomputer models (sound familiar?).
At the time of the first Gulf War, Sagan completely flipped out into full bore eleventy peacenik mode. He went out and gave television interviews claiming that if the war proceeded, and if Saddam burned the Kuwaiti oil fields, a miniature nuclear winter would follow. An absolutely incontrovertible climate signal that everyone would see and realize the sciency truth that war was obsolete as a policy tool.
Well, the war came, the oil fields were burned, and nothing fucking happened.
What do we call scientists whose theories are massively refuted by reality again? Oh, yes. INCOMPETENT.
Freeman Dyson and Richard Feynman, two guys with vastly superior chops to Sagan in physics, both basically said they thought the guy was a clown, using a contrived theory to front-run his politics.
Sagan was also one of the losers who claimed that it would never be technologically possible to intercept a ballistic missile in flight, because Science. And because Reagan. Who was an invariable object of the wrath of Carl.

Science is under attack by (some) conservatives, yeah; but it is under subversion by mainstream liberals.
I think we'll find the latter to be more corrosive. Because when it's widely known that "Science" has been deliberately lying about (to start with) global warming, people are going to look for any climate scientist to blame, even the honest ones. Even people who look like a climate scientist, like - say - biologists.

It was Sagan's nuclear-winter / anti-Reagan crap which turned me off him, not his stance on religion.

127...I think the internet empowers people to revert to a place where apparently they once flourished, or at least like a great deal more than any educated, socialized adult would admit. They liked the playground rules of ages 7-11. They see the internet as a way to unleash their inner 10 year old bully again.

I flirted with the notion that the UK should have stayed out, and then I read up more on Kaiser Bill's stupidity. The guy was awful. So I came back around to agreeing that it should have been fought (but more competently).
The real miss in WW1 was Versailles. A strong Germany with a sane government is entirely in Europe's interest. Versailles ensured a stronger Germany with an insane government two decades later.
Off topic of course.

I'd question much of that on the conservative side. Most of the "attacks" are not attacks against science or the scientific method, but disputes about the conclusions drawn or moral judgments. For example, opposition by many groups to the use of embryonic stem cells in research is not "anti-science" any more than would be opposition to the vivisection of young children. Questioning whether or not the proper solution to climate change is destruction of the Western economy and the condemnation of billions to starvation and death isn't anti-science either.

Glad to see that others in the Horde recall the USMC's "Ontos".
Weirdest looking armored fighting vehicle ever. And with some major quirks/design issues.
But, I have read several Marine memoirs of Vietnam wherein it was claimed that the Ontos was hugely useful to them, not least because its low ground pressure and small size meant it could take heavy firepower into soggy and/or confined places where other armored vehicles could not go.

So I skipped even reading the comments. My life didn't end because I didn't post on that thread. Or read the comments.
There's a concept known as signal to noise ratio, which can be applied to a variety of other things including comment sections. I first experienced it on Usenet, in the poker forum. At first, there was a ton of signal (info about poker) and very little noise (everything else). As time went on, the S/N ratio went to shit so bad that it became a waste of time to hunt through it for nuggets of actual info.
I 'fail to post' stuff I've typed up in the comment box here almost daily. I'm tempted to do it this time as well, but it should be heard. Before you whack that Post button, ask yourself 'Does what I've written contribute to this thread or to general knowledge, or is it just noise?'
And yes, boobeh pics qualify as signal under the general knowledge clause.

They actually tested releasing the canister from a bomber at night. Over New Mexico. The canister released, and opened at the right altitude, to free the bats, who were carrying live incendiary time bombs strapped to their legs, just as they would in a combat mission against Japan.
Then amidst the congratulations by the engineers, someone said HOLY MOTHER OF GOD, we never thought about what happens next. Are the bats carrying their live bombs going to go roost in homes and barns all over the release area? Will there be a spate of mystery fires we will have to explain?
Fortunately the bats had all frozen into immobility while at high altitude.

And his theory about life on Alien Worlds was optimistic to the point of fantasy. Over the last decade, i've discovered details about what permits life to exist on Earth, (such as the moon stabilizing our rotation) and it looks to me like a similar set of lottery jackpot conditions are not so likely as Sagan seemed to think.

1) Tillis worked his ass off for four years finding candidates and raising money to win the legislature for the GOP. Where were these other candidates while Tillils was on the road?
2) After Tillis got a GOP House and Senate he stopped Perdue's budget cold dead.
3) When Tillis got rid of a Democrat governor's veto with Pat McCroy's victory he passed these
4) reduced tax income tax rates by almost 3%
5) passed voter Id
6) stopped early voting on Sundays, aka Black church voter fraud
7) Increased CCC benifits, allowing CCC in parks, in bars, in parking lots
increased restriction on all abortion clinics in the state
9) I am forgetting something?
So how much more conservative do you want Tillis to be?

Although I am not a North Carolinian, I in general want all GOP Senate candidates to be so conservative that they make Mitch McConnell wake up with a start every night and pray,
"Please don't inflict any more of these troublemakers on me, Lord, with their crazy ideas about making the government smaller and behaving like there are limits on Presidential power. All I want is my place at the trough without any fuss and bother."
And I'm not sure Tillis is quite that conservative.

I don't know any of the GOP senate possibles that well, but I do know this- that what the NC GOP accomplished in 2010 is something that is, to me, even more remarkable that what Scott Walker and his people did in Wisconsin. Period. Thom Tillis' contributions to that election and to the bills that followed are much to his credit. Voter ID so strong that the US AG got involved. Good work.

San Antone gets as hot as nuclear rocket exhaust. If that's an issue.
Also, the lefty crazee is getting very intense, at least inside the city limits of SA proper. That's the place where they passed a law saying in effect that if you're not comfortably down with teh ghey, you're not allowed to serve in city government.
