Mike Judge Endorses Instapundit's "Higher Education Bubble" Theory
— Ace

HBO is apparently so high on Mike Judge's new comedy, Silicon Valley, that they're letting you watch the first episode for free on YouTube.

Instapundit must not have actually watched it, or else he would have noted the fierce attack on modern-day college occurring near the beginning of the show.

The character who delivers this diatribe at a TED talk is called "Peter Gregory," who is obviously based on tech titan Peter Thiel. Thiel, famously, is a strident critic of what college has become, and actually offers people $100,000 if they will quit college to pursue their tangible, possibly-useful dream. (I assume Thiel has to first approve of your dream before you get the money. So, you know, don't just quit college and then show up at his door with your hand out.)

In the show, the Thiel-analogue is noted to have made just exactly this offer himself, and then gives that TED talk rant at about 8:25 in the below link.

There are two things about this that are interesting for conservatives, who have long suspected Judge of having conservative (or libertarian, or at least liberal-skeptical) positions:

1. This Thiel analogue is the more attractive character of the two tech titans depicted. The Thiel analogue is helpful towards the heroes, wheres the Thiel analogue's rival seems to want to cheat the hero out of his invention.

The rival tech titan is a Blazing Douchebag who smugly propounds upon his devotion to "social justice." The Thiel analogue hasn't revealed his politics, but Peter Thiel himself is a conservative-leaning libertarian.

2. Mike Judge permits someone in the audience to talk back to the Thiel analogue, and say that his ideas are "dangerous," but that guy is a rumpled old hippie, and he is humiliated in verbal sparring by the Thiel analogue. He's left only to sputter "Fascist," impotently, as he leaves the auditorium.

This is probably the most mainstream reference to the idea of a growing Bubble in Higher Education and the current wretechedness of the college system (particularly when one factors in costs and benefits).

Worth a watch. Skip to 8:25, as I say, and watch the minute long second exchange.

I watched the show earlier today on YouTube. Overall, it's pretty good. It's plainly a Mike Judge production, with his sense of humor and sensibility obvious in the script.

Oh, being a Mike Judge production, and being on HBO, you should know there is some objectionable material here, all of the adult potty mouth sort. Though the minute I'm recommending is clean.

Oh. So it's definitely reality-based, then.

I'm waiting to see if they have a bunch of Blazing Douchebag tech executives who blather on endlessly about "global warming", while at the same time maintaining a fleet of luxury private jets for their own use.

Blazing Douchebag tech execs who then fill up those planes of theirs with below-market-rate discount jet fuel at the government owned pumps at Moffett Federal Air Field in the Valley -- not a privilege extended to members of the general public -- after donating lotsa cash to the Obama campaign.

Because that too is reality-based. That's how sleazy things are now.

19 The funniest part was when the decided to adopt "an African child," and when he shows up, he's a blonde South African white kid. But, being the good liberals they are, they make him wear a African skullcap and a dashiki anyway. And then there's the dog they force to be vegetarian, who's literally going insane with his craving for meat. Every episode destroyed suburban liberalism.

54 The education bubble is either going to occur or it won't (I think it will). So why care whether the theory becomes mainstream or not? The nature of bubbles is that certain people become aware too late, but only those left holding the bag at the end. If it continues forever, then it isn't a bubble, its just growth. I think for those with young kids the idea that college is a must is sort of dying. There are certainly some benefits to college, as the hippie said, many are intangible. There is nothing wrong with that ... if you can afford it (or you are willing to accept the risk that there may be no tangible benefit). To each their prerogative. As for me, I am unwilling to save thousands of dollars for a dubious education for my children, even though I benefited from such education on my parent's dime. But if I have the money and can easily afford it, I reserve the right to change my mind.

84 I wrote a paper in my Masters program about education changing to have more vocational credit programs and less college. It was not well received in 1998. But I saw this in practice in the nuclear industry, where skilled tradesmen would get certified out the yang, with high school diplomas they were pulling down big bucks as pipe fitters and welders and plant operators. Eventually, I figured, this is how we would do computer technicians and operators, who mostly don't need art appreciation or whatever to do their skilled jobs. I think this is coming, but the universities are kicking and screaming against it. Plus, you know, war on women because they get better grades in the softer stuff.

>>>Keep in mind colleges also tried to usurp the role of some of the things that could be handled in trade schools.

For example, education and business. Which had seperate campuses and their own frats, etc. but they were never "college" in the same sense. It changed, especially for business schools around late-60s early 70s with the advent of community colleges which had the cachet of "college" and cost about the same as a trade school. Then those business and trade schools were mocked and became things like Bryant and Stratton is today: Places for dead-enders to learn some marketable skills so as to achieve marginality and learn some manners.

101 "Though an education for it's own sake is a good idea. Or was when tuition wasn't so ridiculous." Now that so many schools offer their courses online for free, I see zero reason to go to college if your goal is simply to become more educated. There are definitely some jobs that require a college degree. I don't disagree with that. It's just that the number of jobs that require a college degree is far lower than the number of jobs that now "require" a college degree due to the influx of the -studies crowd.

104 Also unremarked in the cancerous explosion of the higher education industry:

_Griggs v. Duke Power_, one of the most preposterous Supreme Court decisions ever (and of course that's saying something in the era of "emanations and penumbras").

Companies used to hire people without college degrees and then use tools like IQ testing to promote the smart ones.

Because when you're putting people in charge of things like large power plants, as Duke Power did and does, things that catastrophically catch on fire or explode if mishandled by dumb people, having smart people in charge is important. To say nothing of the importance to the public of reliable power supplies. So: filter by IQ.

Oops! Certain ethnicities don't do well on IQ testing. Teh rayciss!

So the use of such testing became illegal. Thank you SCOTUS!

It took under five milliseconds for all of those jobs which had not previously been thought to require a college degree to suddenly, hey presto, require a college degree.

College loan debts are totally ready to be the next Democrat vote buying gift.  First, they've dramatically expanded the debts and encouraged people to buy useless degrees in "communications" and "criminal justice", racking up huge debts.  Then they kicked banks out of the market, so government totally controls the granting and disposition of the debts.  Lastly, they toughened up the terms and made the debts undischargable in bankruptcy (which is fucking amazing, in and of itself).

119 College is and of itself is not a problem. It is merely the cost of it. There is the direct cost of going and opportunity cost of not working which have to be weighed against the tangible and intangible benefits. In years past the direct cost were low and the opportunity cost were low, but the tangible benefits were high (and for some professions are still high) and the intangible benefits also had some value (e.g., meeting wife, a form of networking). But now, those are all inverted. Further, there are added negatives that have arisen from the liberalization of the campus environment. It will be interesting to see what transpires over the next 20 years. For one, there is a demographic issue for college because a "baby bust" will be following the millennial baby boom in about 10 years.

In fact, the GOP should pass a debt forgiveness first, and get ahead of the shithead progressives, in return for which an equal amount gets shaved from 'administrative costs" in HHS, IRS, Justice, Commerce etc etc (everything except Defense).

It's a two-fer:  we get to claim we wanted to forgive student loan debt, but the evil Democrats who hate students and the middle class refused, and we get to say we wanted to eleiminate only champagne in the bath tub from HHS and make Eric Fucking Holder buy his own private jets rather than use the taxpayers, but Democrats are so wedded to spending big on fraud and waste that they refused.

Social promotion messes up societies. Whether it's social promotion of an inner city kid who can't read being given a high school degree anyway, or social promotion of a mediocre guy who got in to Harvard because daddy is a wealthy alumnus.

It pisses me off that a 4.0 from a decent relatively unknown college doesn't get you in the same doors  as a 3.0 from what you deem a top 50 school.   The reason most get to go to a top 50 school other than a scholarship  is because they have some one who is paying the 40k to 100k a year in tuition and board.     They are not necessarily a better candidate,   they just have more access to money.

College may give them a chance at higher incomes, but when you factor the direct cost of college and opportunity cost of early work years, it may simply be a push. Never mind that it is a government action -- successful felony prosecution -- that created the protected status in the first place.

The one benefit I have over Cassandra I suppose, I have a sense of humor about it all .

233 Posted by: Rev. Al at April 08, 2014 05:46 PM (hFL/3) I've learned two things from you Rev. Al. One: Lying cheating and race bating pays well. Also it's apparently an excellent diet regiment.

234 yeah... anyone else notice that Al has lost like 80lbs in the last year?

My inner voice says it's not due to his workouts.

236 (I assume Thiel has to first approve of your dream before you get the money. So, you know, don't just quit college and then show up at his door with your hand out.) OTOH if you're the sort to quit college hoping a rich guy will give you $100,000 for free... you're probably not going to get anything from college either. Quitting won't hurt you. Maybe a trade school? Or find a loan to get a septic tank cleaning truck... those guys make bank in areas with septic tanks (and for a damn good reason).

237 To be fair in this argument, my college tuition was subsidized.. 100% scholarship ride for tuition. Just had to cover room & board for 4 years and keep my 3.5+ GPA to keep it all. I graduated with my GPA dropping to 3.49 my last semester after funding was secured. Lowest "Cum Laude" GPA my college had ever graduated, as they calculate that before the last semester. And they changed the rules so nobody without a minimum 3.5 cumulative can ever graduate with Cum Laude again. Not really something to be proud of as such; but it's still my legacy there.
