Weekend Travel Thread: The Nicest People [Y-not]
— Open Blogger

Greetings, morons and moronettes! Welcome to your Weekend Travel Thread, brought to you by 2000 Miles:

I was away last weekend visiting a sick parent. Not a very fun form of travel (nor economical). I think the five day trip ran over four grand. (Mr Y-not is hiding both the bills and all sharp objects from me -- there goes our 30th wedding anniversary vacation!)

Anyway, it was a trip packed with plenty of time (too much time) to sit and ruminate, especially about people... ...by which, of course, I mean the Evil Rat Bastards who comprise the minority of the U.S. population but manage to occupy an overly large presence in our psyche by virtue of their commitment to being unpleasant.

That said, I gotta tell you that I found myself really enjoying (well, as much as possible given the circumstances) being back in my hometown. Almost every single person with whom I interacted was not just polite, but actually nice. Now you might expect that of service industry folks, but I even found a good number of regular people I passed by on foot smiling or nodding or even saying hello.

(I don't have an explanation. It's not a small town, nor is it a particularly homogeneous one in terms of appearances, accents, or much of anything -- so it's not like I seemed like I "belonged" any more than any other person might. And the weather was cold and dreary. But whatever the reason, it was certainly a relief to be dealing with nice people instead of jerk wads last week.)

So it got me thinking about where I've traveled that have a disproportionate number of "nice" people -- and the reverse, of course.

There are tons of listicles about this topic. Here's one that was published last year by Conde Nast.

More than 46,000 readers gave their opinions last year on everything from favorite airlines to best hotels and friendliest and unfriendliest cities. It's the latter category that might cause the most surprises, with U.S. cities dominating the "unfriendly" list.
Newark, New Jersey, is the unfriendliest city in the world according to the survey.
"Newark is best known for being the site of an airport near New York, and for many of our readers, that's the only reason to stop there," says Conde Nast Traveler.
In total, five U.S. cities were voted into the top 10 unfriendly cities list and eight made the top 20.

One U.S. city broke the top five in Conde Nast's list of friendliest cities: Charleston, South Carolina. Clearly I need to add it to my bucket list. Follow the link to see the top and "bottom" lists.

MSGI-charleston-savannah-multisport-12.jpg

The Battery, Charleston, South Carolina

I can't say I was too impressed by Conde Nast's rankings, however, as the "unfriendly" cities are also, for the large part, simply dangerous and/or depressed cities. I mean, Newark? Come on! I'm really more interested in which cities (or countries) that are typically thought of as travel destinations are home to a lot of friendly (or unfriendly) people. Which tourist destinations have an undeserved reputation for friendliest? Which deserve that reputation?

In my own travels I've found that there's something Mr Y-not and I call The Mahalo Effect. You know how everyone says how laid-back and nice Hawaiians are? They refer to the "mahalo" lifestyle. Well, in my experience after several trips there, I'd say that's undeserved. If you are lucky, you get professional service from the folks in the travel industry, but random interactions with non-tourists are generally meh (or worse). I've found it's a pretty common phenomenon in areas with seasonal tourism, especially beach towns. In any event, we've concluded that the actual translation for "mahalo" is F-U.

I will add, that the exception to The Mahalo Effect appears to be in the Waimea area of the Big Island which seems more like a real place with real people who don't treat you as a walking wallet to be picked.

Waimea-town.jpg

Go here.

BTW, if you just want to focus on the U.S. cities that are ranked friendlies and least friendly, follow this link. (It's just a summary from that same Conde Nast survey.) I'd say one of the friendliest large cities that I've spent time in is Houston. The men, in particular, are very polite. My least favorite U.S. cities in terms of friendliness are probably Boston and New Orleans. YMMV. (In terms of destinations outside the U.S., the friendliest was Vancouver, B.C., and the least friendly was Paris.)

Another way to identify "friendly" places, might be to look at which places are considered to be ideal for solo travelers. Back in the day I did a lot of traveling on my own and it did make a huge difference to the enjoyment of my trip if the locals were friendly, helpful, nice, etc. Courtesy of a site called Thought Catalog, here's a list of the best places to travel alone. Here's a bit about the criteria used:

the ideal places for solo travel will have to either:

Have really friendly people so you can make friends easily and get to know a place through local knowledge;

Be away from crowds but yet safe enough for you to relax without worrying too much.

Follow the link to see the top ten. What do you think of it? I have not been to any of the places on the list, although I did find the parts of Portugal that I visited to be pretty friendly. No problems navigating there despite not speaking the language and some effort by the locals to engage with us as people, not just tourists.

PORTUGAL.jpg

Aveiro, Portugal was ranked number three in top destinations for solo travelers.

Finally, in the interest of completeness, I think I should provide this link to six places where women should not travel alone, courtesy of a site called Hello Beautiful. There are no surprises on this list.

So where have you visited (or lived) in which you've found the people especially nice?

8 I haven't actually traveled all that much, but I agree that Parisians are not friendly at at all. We had a great experience in Edinburgh, though, don't know if that's the norm. I'm still half in love with this guy named Paul who bought us a drink in the hotel bar and gave us touristy tips. He was super hot, too bad it was my first anniversary trip!

9 I have a shorter list of places women should not visit alone:

1. nations with an Islamic majority
2. sub-saharan Africa
3. nations experiencing civil strife
4.nations with exceptionally high crime rates

Sure, there's a few exceptions, but generally I think this is an easier list to remember....

13 Winter time in November, off-tourist season, Vieste Italy tres bella.  It is a small Italian town nestled on the Adriatic with friendly people.  Naples is just a drive over the boot and mountains from there.  Rome is seven hours away by bus.  Can take a ferry to see Croatia and Bosnia.  Food is decent and if there is a small mob can order 'family plan' to feed the masses the salad, the pasta, the ante-pasta, and if you have room dessert.  Plus its simply beautiful to watch in the evening as the people of the town do a promenade.

For the religious, Vatican is about seven hours away by bus.  Never tried Italian trains.  Within easy driving distance from Vieste is Monte San Angelo and where Padre Pio was.  Due to Italian drivers, by the time you reach either you will feel a need to confess sins and give thanks for living.

If you like bargains, once a month on Saturday the town square is filled with vendors selling everything from movies to luggage to crystal to leather jackets.

14 aloha Y-not.  I have not traveled enough to rank places.  I went to the Maldive Islands for work 16 years ago and it was very friendly at the time and was a big European winter beach destination but I think I read something about the fundamentalist Muslims gaining power so I wouldn't go there for fun now.

18 Charleston-Had friends that used to live they rave about it to this day. Hawaii-Heard the same from relatives who visited. People aren't very nice, everything costs twice or three times what it does on the mainland, and, lots of Asian tourists whose ideas on politeness and courtesy are different from everyone else's. Portugal-Had an old GF that went there one time. Cheap. People were nice she said. Not absolutely touristed all up so you could get around and do things without much trouble.

28 In my limited experience: NYC manners in the 80s were horrible, now they're ok. Paris in the 80s kind of sucked too, but when I went back two years ago, no one was rude, and a few folks were very friendly. Even in my own friendly Texas, I ran into more assholes in the 70s than I do now, at least in regards to folks in government jobs. Either people are nicer now, or people are more polite to old married bags than they are to young women. Or, I'm just full of shit. One.

32

I have visited places that were friendly to me...and then later talked to other people who'd visited there, and had experienced the complete opposite.

So it's difficult to definitively declare that a place is 'friendly'....based solely on my own experience.

I tend to be nice to people first, and then they usually are nice in return.

Rabid lefty, yes. But she's had at least one episode of reasonableness. When Rush started using My City Was Gone as his theme, her record company freaked and sent a C and D letter without informing her. When she heard about the letter, she put a stop to it and let Rush use the tune, partly because her parents were both Rush fans. She donates the royalties to PETA, and both sides are happy as a clam.

64 My travel plans certainly got curtailed last week. Furloughed from my 767 captain position after 14 years with my airline. I should be in Spain right now picking up coffee for my Dad but spent this week filing for unemployment. Still a little hope that a buyer is in the wings (pun intended) and could get my job back but no guarantees. If you have the chance, opportunity or wherewithal travel as much as you can. We truly live in a wonderful world and if things don't work out a large part of my life is gone. PS If you are ever in Bucharest tell the lovely lass at the Hyatt (I think) captain Al said hi. WOW.

As the train pulled away from the station I could see him beating the shit out of the pick pocket on the platform Now, if you go to the north of France the people are very very friendly and love America and Americans. Still Germans in the countryside are very nice. Irishmen in pubs too I have always been treated very well in NYC. I have been pushed off every sidewalk in Asia. Its a bit jarring, but not personal

78 It is certainly a pretty place on this planet that SoCal. Now, Orlando. Everything looked like it had been built within the last 5 years. Sort of like the fake Rock Ridge in Blazing Saddles. Although I don't remember any guff from the locals while there.

83 Alf767 sorry to hear about the furlough. Been there done that. Good luck in the job hunt. As to travel - been to Paris many times for both business and pleasure. The Parisians seem to require to look down their noses at someone. For a long while it was Americans, but lately it seems the Russians are the targets of their scorn. So if you parade around in a tracksuit and a gold medallion, be prepared for rudeness. Concur that nothern France is much more American-friendly. They still remember D-Day.

85 Ah! Parker Ranch. I am intimately familiar with that shopping center! Wife stops there for a restroom break, we buy cowboy stuff for the in-laws, and get some juice at the health-food store on the way from North of Kona up and around. The restaurant there is good - but we always wind up at Merriman's.

You should always stop at Tex Drive In for some Malasadas.

We're there every September or else.

86 I don't have anything to say about traveling, but last night I stopped at the liquor store on my way home from work. The cashier was wearing a short skirt, knee-high boots with flat soles, long hair tied back in a bun, and glasses. Great googly moogly. She pushed all of my buttons. Even better, she looked about 40, and I'm in my 50s. So it's not like she was a 20-something cutie who is out of my league. I'm going to have to chug down this bottle as fast as possible so I can go back there again.

73...Its like that

Posted by: thunderb

----------

Yeah, see...I think that's why it's hard to say definitively if a place is 'friendly' or not.

It depends on a lot of factors.

It depends on who you are, how you look, if you're friendly and have a nice attitude...and if the people you encounter have a preconceived notion about 'people like you'.

For example:

My pickup broke down one time, and I was stranded on the Interstate.

It was out in the middle of nowhere...and my cell phone was intermittent.

So I get out and try to get help from passers-by.

My hair was in a braid, with a ball cap on and sunglasses...had a baggy work shirt on over a t-shirt and jeans.

No one stopped.

So I get back in my truck and take off the ball cap, take down my hair [blonde]...and take off the baggy work shirt, revealing a snug t-shirt.

I get out and stand by my truck.

Three cars pull over in rapid succession...with very friendly guys in them, asking me if I need help.

So, like I said.

'Friendliness' can depend on the factors in play.

Philadelphians are not very friendly and when I was there (several trips in the '80's), they had the most aggressive panhandlers I have ever seen. If you said no, they'd follow you and badger you. Even in NY, I didn't have that experience. DC people are not that friendly to tourists, but I found, living there, that it is fairly easy to make friends there. There are so many single people there from someplace else that nobody has the option of continuing to hang out with high school friends. (Milwaukee is the reverse - people are friendlier to visitors, but it's tough to make friends here because so many people here have lived here their entire lives, still hang out with old school buddies, and don't feel the need to expand their social circle.)

Paris isn't friendly, but Normandy is. My sister loved the Italians. And I thought the Brits were much friendlier than their rep, although I met a few anti-American aholes there as well. Houston people are extremely friendly.

I had some Chinese lawyers in town a few months ago and took them around. We did Getty Center, Sunset Strip, outdoor lunch at a restaurant in Santa Monica and the 3rd St. Promenade. The SM pier. It was a beautiful day and they couldn't get enough of it. It's interesting seeing somewhere you lived all your life through the eyes of people who are from a completely different culture. You know what impressed them the most? How blue the sky was. Weird.

187 I live in the Shreveport Bossier area, AKA NW Louisiana, AKA the ArkLaTex. The people here are extremely warm and friendly. In four years here, I have had the best service of my life in many different categories. My plumber's wife helped me get out of jury duty (long but true story), I had about 4-5 people at Lowes beat the computer system into submission and get me an extra discount, another person at Lowes asked 3 of her co-workers to help her find brown duct or electrical tape for my daughter for a craft, every teenager at the grocery store or McDonalds calls me Ma'am (and they get the order right almost every time), there was once a waitress who sat down to cut my son's pancakes so I could eat, etc. etc. etc. I'm really getting used to it. Not a whole lot of reasons for y'all to come visit, though. But if you want to gamble and just hang out, esp. in winter or supposed spring, come on by. Or if you want a medium sized urban area that is growing and has jobs...

maybe something to do with they don't get robbed and burglarized and carjacked and vandalized every waking moment of every day.  sorry, we're basically under attack here in my very overpriced neighborhood the last couple of weeks.  they come in through the bathroom window and ransack the places.  2 days ago they took a 125 pound safe out of someone on the next block.  they are brazen and relentless and i want them to die.

196 My son got stranded in Shelby Montana for 2 weeks - low on cash and a car that gave up. He had that 'not from around here look.' (white kid with dredlocks). After a few days the people at the motel and a cafe learned his story and were so incredibly kind to him. The cook at the cafe would make him a huge breakfast and the waitress would package up the extra so he could have it later for lunch. Locals bought him a few beers and told him the areas history and some great spots to take his camera to get some pictures. We were thousands of miles away and worried for him. Their kindness warmed this mother's heart.

Been away from Pugetopolis nigh on fifteen years now and every time I go back I dislike the people even more. Either snooty, pretentious and fanatically leftist (Seattle) or pasty-white 300-lb trailer trash (parts surrounding). However, here in Texas pretty much everyone is friendly, chatty and helpful. In fact I remember the one time I made a casual remark to a clerk in a store and he ignored it. Just that one time. I love the way men are still polite to women here. Even the most saggy-assed, tattoo'd up dude or redneck with holes in his shirt will hasten his step to hold the door for a lady. I love it.

252 Do you remember the model? I'm curious 'cause I like old tractors and have restored a few JDs. Grew up with a Ford 8N on the farm. Yeah, it was a '51 8n. Had it overhauled and still have it. Good as new to this day.

253 Empire- I'm in Dover.

Truck Monkey- Have you hit Bombay Hook for birding?

Hell, you could come to my house in the middle of town and be nearly gauranteed a couple of Blue Heron sightings and have a decent shot at seeing a Bald Eagle. Get a Hawk on our street once a year or so and have watched the Eagles do battle with Osprey (I think).

254 I would kill to find some old dude what loves old tractors. It just seems so sexy to me.[/i} Lots of people out there who like old tractors. I'm not an "old" guy so I can't fit you're bill, sorry. Ever visit "Yesterday's Tractors" or "Tractor by Net" on the web? If you do, you'll find your huckleberry.

255 @251 Fucked that post up. Too much italics.

Great little tractor. Has a 3 pt. hitch (that Ford kinda stole from Ferguson).  Not great for farming, ideal for small acerage. I enjoyed the 8N we had when I was a kid.

257 How Seattle doesn't make it on every list of the most 'unfriendliest' cities is a mystery to me.

When Seattleites aren't pulling their passive-aggressive bullshit, they're downright rude.

In short, it's a city that thinks way, way too much of itself and it really isn't all that.

That's my home page. Don't read it as much as I used to. Good information there.

259 The only rude people I ever cam across in WI were in Madison.... where you'd expect them to be. Moonbat central. Posted by: Truck Monkey, Gruntled New Business Owner at April 05, 2014 Us flatlanders in IL refer to it as "The People's Republic of Madison". Haven't been there in years, but they have a long history of assholery IMO.

260 Yeah, ol' man Ford robbed Ferguson. I grew up on a Ford NAA so the non-independent three point threw me. Learned it. The little thing will do anything the NAA (which we still have) will do and burn less gas doing it. LIttle sum bitch. Dad has a Kubota 2710 now and it is a damn fine piece of equipment. But there are still things both the NAA and the 8n will do better.

261 I just got home from Cloudland Canyon State Park in NW GA. All kinds of awesomeness. Posted by: Adam at April 05, 2014 05:24 PM And how did your tatas survive the hike. Oooops, I mean your fatass! T Posted by: The Farmer ------------------- Kind of an odd bit of geography to find in Georgia, no?

I looked that tractor up on Bing.  Nive looking  utility tractor.  I have a JD 750 4WD.   Your Dad's tractor has more HP.  I love my 750.

I also grew up driving a red Ford. Don't remember the model. I was the first with Selec-To-Speed.

Posted by: Ronster at April 05, 2014 05:36 PM (puNd6)

263 I must be getting drunk.  That's supposed to be Select-O-Speed. Damn.

Posted by: Ronster at April 05, 2014 05:45 PM (puNd6)

264 The little Kubota is a marvel. Things that look like they should break, seeming weak points, parts that look like they just aren't up to par.........don't fail. They just don't. Hard to pan it because it just never fails. The NAA and 8n are simple stalwarts that will be operating a century from now. Just rebuild 'em and put them back out. I will not be last owner of my 8n.

 Ricardo Kill,

Enjoyed talking tractors with you.  I'm out.

267 Austin isn't all bad. I find that people are generally pretty friendly, especially around the outskirts. I was just at Home Depot in Dripping Springs and EVERYONE was super nice and helpful. If you asked a question, they insisted on walking you over to wherever it is you need to be to find whatever. My husband is originally from New Jersey and he still hasn't quite gotten the gist of being Texas friendly or accepting what it means. He's been here since 1988-89 or so.

268 SC is by far the friendliest state in which I have been. Everyone waves and says, "hey".
