What Liberals Think Vs. Reality
— DrewM

What our old friend Oliver Willis thinks when he sees Mitch McConnell walking on stage with a rifle.

Reality:

Official legal position of New York City: Cops have no obligation to protect an individual being attacked by a guy with a knife.

What "explanatory journalist" Sarah "Gosnell is a local crime story" Kliff thinks about ObamaCare's lousy poll numbers.

Reality: Obama said his plan would, "cut the cost of a typical family's premium by up to $2,500 a year."

Spoiler...it didn't.

23 Serenity has a song called Thriven that I think of often nowadays.

It tells the story of a group of people who set out and worked themselves to death building up a new homeland, and, as time passed, the people forgot the hardships that the previous generations had endured, and threw away their faith and work ethic, choosing instead to live in excess and indulgence.

The song ends with the narrator/singer wondering if their land could be rebuilt, but as he watches the vultures devour all that remains, he notes that there are no worthy heirs to the previous generations, who worked hard to make that land of peace and plenty.

Such thinking would be lost on most of our current citizenry... which probably means we'll be singing that tune ourselves before much longer.

46 Posted by: Vic at March 07, 2014 10:49 AM (T2V/1) Indeed. 5 minutes is an eternity when your house is being invaded. I live in a two story house. Which means that if someone breaks in I either go past them or out my second story window. So best case scenario here: 1) Get to phone (one room down from my bedroom) 2) Dial 911 3) wait for connection We'll call this 30 seconds (I think that's a fair estimate) 4) Describe problem to 911 agent, give location. 5) Agent dispatches. We'll call this 15 seconds. (Which is honestly far to little, but I'm being generous to dumbfuck willis.) OK, now if I'm *really* lucky there's a cop parked in the fire station across from my subdivision. (Unlikely frankly, I've never seen it, but we'll roll with that) So he get's call, determines location, and responds. Assuming he skips the light, that's still about 45 seconds at minimum. So that's 1:30 BEST CASE that I'm cowering in closet. Which frankly is longer than I want to spend with an intruder in my house and plenty of time for something to go badly for me.

47 Five minutes is a long time to wait when you are confronted by an angry man who is bigger and stronger than you, and armed.

Five minutes is a long time to wait if a gang is breaking down your front door.

Five minutes is a long time to wait if you are elderly, or otherwise unable to run away.

five minutes is a long time to wait if there are potential assailants blocking all of your exit routes.

Five minutes is a long time to wait when you realize it may take several minutes just to get local law enforcement to understand the nature of the emergency.

Amazingly enough, this is actually applicable to this thread, too, so   I'm bringing it up from the Dump.

The guy who burned himself over 90% of his body while making Molotov    cocktails   has kicked the bucket.   The cops, meanwhile, have    said that they haven't yet     uncovered evidence    of     criminal intent   in his actions.

Meanwhile,  if the cops pull you over and    find  that you have   more money in your car than they think you have any justifiable reason to have,   they can confiscate    that money.   Just because they think MAYBE you might be up   to   nefarious dealings.

Example, from Jalopnik:  http://tinyurl.com/ctxdrs9

So get this straight:

Molotov cocktails,  kerosene and gasoline   in your room :  no clear evidence of criminal intent

Having $20,000 in your car   that   you plan to use to buy another car, for which you    present    evidence of your online car shopping   as proof of your good  intent:  clear evidence of criminal intent

"We do not like your reality and will be replacing it with our more comfortable fantasy.    You're welcome."

- Law enforcement   and   the left   (but I am increasingly repeating myself)

59 The following is from an article in a Milwalkee newspaper decrying slow police response times.

New records obtained this month by the newspaper show the department's overall response time was 3.5 minutes longer on average during the three full years since Flynn's arrival compared with the three years prior. That's more than 10% longer.

In one example found by the newspaper, Milwaukee police took more than 45 minutes to get to a fatal stabbing in Riverwest in July, even though it was considered a top priority call and the caller admitted that she stabbed her boyfriend.

In another case, police took more than two hours to arrive at the scene of a fatal car crash in June on the far northwest side.

IOW this Willis toad is on a different planet somewhere if he thinks he is within 5 min of a police response.

Given the person's age, we opted to call 911. I shit you not, it rang for over a minute and I never got a response. Eventually the university security revived the person who said they just wanted to be taken outside for some air. They offered to take her to the ER (which is right down the road at the Med school.) Anyway, I hung up on the still ringing phone at this point. About 5-10 minutes later I got a call back from EMS chewing me out for "abusing the 911 system." I explained that this was the front desk of a student center, and in fact, we had a situation that warranted calling 911 (unconscious elderly person) and it wasn't my fault they were inept and that while I was waiting for a person to pick up the situation resolved itself. I suspect that they were screening and avoiding calls from the university phone trunk, which when you think about that is scary as shit.

She was on 911 for at least 20 minute as they tried to break in. They broke in and she shot one dead before the police could get there. What was she suppose to do?

How   about   those   police districts where they've said,  very clearly,   that,  due to budget constraints (also called, "The guys with the checkbooks wanting to scare the voters by cutting     emergency services instead of   Save the Whales initiatives"   from the budget),   they will have to     drawback   on those calls to which they will and will not respond?   Huh?   Places like   Compton or Detroit.   How about those places,   Willis?

Anyway, you'd better hope when the cops DO arrive that they pick the right house, and don't go stormtroopering into your neighbor's place, guns blazing.

104 There's a debate that has to be had with sheltered liberals about the reality of police response times.

But there's also a debate that has to be had about the fact that there are a ton of criminal-violence and self-defense situations in which police response is a total nonissue, because the victim never has any opportunity to contact the police.

Mr. Liberal strolls down the sidewalk of his city one fine evening.

At the head of an alleyway, a big heavily tattooed ex-con steps out of the shadows holding a knife. "Gimme your wallet, man."

Mr. Liberal squeaks indignantly, "No! I'm calling the cops!"

Mr. Liberal reaches for his phone. Five seconds later he's lying unconscious on the sidewalk in a spreading pool of his own blood. By the time someone else notices him there, Mr. Liberal has already bled out and died, and the murderous perp is long gone.

At that point, who gives a damn about response time?

155 Police response to violent crime is not about stopping the crime in progress, it's about cleaning up the mess after.

It's about stopping blood feuds between gangs or families.

It's about restraining reasonable people who have temporarily lost their self control.

It's about keeping a civil disagreement from escalating, and they do that only poorly. The only effective restraint is that of  the individuals involved in the dispute.

Police response is much like a simple lock on a door. Honest people respect property rights whether or not the property is secured, and restrain themselves whether or not the police have been called.. Dishonest people are not deterred by police.

True story: While in college, one of my liberal friends decided to bike down to the store. He lived in a bad area, and on the way to the store, he saw a large group of young black males hanging out on the sidewalk.

Not wishing to appear racist, he declined to cross to the other side of the street when passing them by. "We're all in this together," he thought. "I'll do my part not to stereotype these guys and instead be a friendly neighbor."

As he approached them, he gave them a big smile and a nod. That's when a two by four blasted him in the mouth, knocked him off his bike and shattered his teeth.

The group took his camera, his bike, and his wallet. Bloodied and disoriented from a concussion, my friend dragged himself across the street and found a pay phone to call for medial attention.

I literally laughed out loud when he told me this story. To his credit, he laughed at his own stupidity as well.

He's still a liberal, though.

166 A local example of a man, killed for his phone, while he was on the line with 911 dispatch, in one of these so-called quick response areas.

http://preview.tinyurl.com/l9o9sna

A 17-year-old boy accused of killing a Seattle man after the other man fought off a robbery attempt has been charged as an adult.

Charged with first-degree murder, Byron White is alleged to have shot and killed David Peterson on Feb. 23 in SeattleÂ’s Greenwood neighborhood. White was arrested at Sea-Tac Airport attempting to board a flight to Atlanta.

King County prosecutors contend White, a Ballard High School student,  first approached Peterson at 8:30 p.m. in the 8500 block of First Avenue Northwest.

White attempted to steal PetersonÂ’s cell phone, but Peterson, 54, fought him off, according to prosecutors. White is alleged to have walked away, then doubled back and shot Peterson in the chest, killing him.

“David Peterson went out for a walk around the neighborhood after dinner and never returned,” King County Prosecutor Dan Satterberg said in a statement Wednesday. “He was a random victim from a chance encounter with a dangerous young man.

“That the evidence shows he was murdered for his cellphone by a teenager with a gun makes this all the more tragic and senseless.”

According to charging papers, Peterson called 911 from the parking lot of a Mud Bay pet store and reported heÂ’d been punched in the head by a man trying to steal his cell phone.

Peterson then told the 911 operator the man had turned around and was coming at him again. As the operator listened in, Peterson told his assailant he wasnÂ’t giving up his phone before the call suddenly disconnected.

Police arrived minutes later to find Peterson dead in the parking lot. HeÂ’d been shot in the chest; a spent 9 mm shell casing was found nearby.

175 When seconds count, police are minutes away. Didn't it take police 20 minutes to respond at Newtown? Google map tells me it only takes 7 minutes and that's if you abide by the traffic laws and stoplights. Flash the lights and couldn't they cut at least a minute or two off the response time? Good luck counting on the police when you need them.

For all Williamson's snark aimed at constitutional integrity, he still wants it, just rebranded as a prize "won" by neoconservatism. Pfft. Talk about exercises in futility. 2. 199 The term 'perception is reality' is one of the most dangerous sayings we have... Dems believe that if they can get people to 'perceive' their 'truth'... that it will become reality. And sadly... people have voted for generations on 'nice' things... that were patently unworkable, based on things that were not true. Liberals perceive no need for guns... because THEY have never used one... they don't understand that because they CHOSE to not even have that tool available... that others can and will use it to save lives, often their own. My 85 year old Mom is a case in point.... Anti gun her entire life... didn't even want us playing with toy guns as children.... I moved back to California to take care of her 3 years ago... and the minute she saw my guns (now sadly lost in a boating accident)... FREAK!!!! Kept em anyway.... and now she does not gripe about them... because we had someone trying to break into the house... they left when, gun in hand, I flipped on the outside lights... Her perception got the Reality override...

Omaha Nebraska police will not rush into a household where there may be a robbery or home invasion in progress. They will arrive at the perimeter, monitor the situation, and await backup before then walking the property. Once it appears there is not a crime in progress, they will knock on the door of the residence. If there has been a crime committed, with or without victims, they will then begin investigating the crime scene.

At Sandy Hook, the cops arrived on location about 4 min after the 911 call, a few seconds later was the last shot fired (killer's suicide)........and the cops entered the building about 5 minutes later. The timeline is in the wiki article.

At Columbine, the cops arrived almost immediately, but dicked around outside for over 30 minutes before entering the school.

I guess 5 minutes is an improvement.
