Feel-Good Story Open Thread [Y-not]

There have been a lot of downer stories lately, so how about something uplifting?

This week is the Masters Championship at Augusta. (That's a golf tournament, you haters!) I've never been (iirc some of our morons have), but from everything I've heard, it's quite a celebration. Many (most?) of the former champions return each year and a select few guests get to meet them.

One of the returning champions is Billy Casper, who is one of the most accomplished pro golfers of all-time. Unfortunately for him, his career was at its peak during the era of the Big Three (Palmer, Player, and Nicklaus), so he didn't get as much acclaim as he might have otherwise.

I've been lucky enough to get to know Billy (and his terrific wife, Shirley) a little since moving to Utah, and he really is an impressive (and fun) person. If you ever have a chance to watch the interview Feherty did with Billy last year, do so. Feherty, who is generally a very snarky guy, was clearly moved by the experience.

In any event, here is a nice story about Billy's visit with a wounded G.I. during Vietnam:

That day in a Japanese hospital may have shown Casper at his warmest because when he looked over at a hospital bed and saw a soldier who had been wounded to a point where he could barely be recognized, the golfer moved closer. A doctor told him not to bother, that Lt. Patrick Cleburne Â‘ClebeÂ’ McClary Â“was ready to die,Â” said Casper, but something made him approach the man.
Â“I will never forget that day,Â” said McClary, who on March 3, 1968 had been wounded during his 19th reconnaissance mission in Vietnam. McClary lost his left arm and his left eye and laid in that bed that day thinking one thing. Â“IÂ’d given up. I wanted to die and IÂ’d have died right there if not for him.Â”
Casper, by 1968 a two-time U.S. Open champion and one of the most prolific winners on the PGA Tour, sensed McClaryÂ’s hopelessness as he approached the man.
Â“He put his arm around me, leaned in and said, Â‘God could use you today. DonÂ’t give up,Â’ Â“ said McClary. Â“Then he thanked me for what I had done for our country and said, Â‘God bless you.Â’ Â“
Somehow, McClary found the resolve to fight. Somehow, he survived, left that hospital in Japan, and settled in South Carolina around Myrtle Beach.

One reason I enjoy following the PGA Tour is that it seems to me most of the golfers are men of good character. Nice change from many sports "heroes."

4 Golfers have to be nice and have manners. You can't go on a course, especially one like Augusta, using foul language and your pants falling off. I have to go through there next week.

6 I see that Lt. McClary did indeed recover and is now a motivational speaker. He has several books on amazon. I think I will check to see if my library has any copies. I'd like to read more of his story.

It's also a surprisingly compact course, like many of its era, which is why they really can't lengthen it anymore. But the best part is the food! Wonderful pulled pork sandwiches and pimento cheese sammies that only set you back something ridiculous like $2.00.

18 Very nice story, and one that reinforces the positive aspects of athletics.

One reason I am more and more interested in hockey is that for the most part, hockey players are more interested in the team than themselves, and they seem to do lots of good things with very little publicity.

22 I remember a few years ago when Little Winger was on his second tour in Iraq. He's an avid golfer and watches golf all the time. So he asks me to record the entire Masters tournament on DVD and ship them over to him. So literally ten minutes before the tournament starts, the DVD player goes kaput. I run over to Target like a crazy person, grab whatever they have off the shelf, race home, set the dang thing up, sweating bullets the whole time. I did not want to let him down. I got the whole thing up and recording in like half an hour flat and about had a heart attack doing it. So finally the tournament is over, I ship everything off, and a couple weeks later I asked him if he got the DVDs . He said, oh yeah but he didn't need them because somehow they had managed to see most of the Masters from the jail in Baghdad or somewhere stupid like that. I could have decked him.

49 Re my sickbed. I'm getting better. I got really worn out when I flew back to MD and then promptly caught a cold when I returned. It's running a normal course (for me) - throat->head->chest. I'm getting better. Annoying thing is Mr Y-not didn't catch it when I did... but as of yesterday he's started showing symptoms. :-(

61 Love The Masters! Its a toss up between The Masters or the British Open for my favorite Major. Next week the the PGA Tour stop is at Harbour Town, SC. Another beautiful golf course that I would like to visit. I'm not sure I'd play it. I need easy golf courses to play on, I'm terrible. I think Matt Kuchar will get off the best player to not win a major list this week.

69 About Gin and Tonics....

Muddle the lime in the bottom of the glass....it gives a great flavor from both the juice and the oils from the zest.

I cut 1/2 a lime into four pieces and muddle for several seconds.

71 I guess I have somewhat conflicted feelings about televised golf. LOVE the green and all the blooms in Augusta at this time of year, when it's still brown and half-frozen here in New England and the only things blooming are the pussywillow and the heather. But the sappy commentary, especially Jim Nance, combined with all-too personal shots of the swearing guys on the course, is a bit much. My favorite golf-watching experience dates back to when Pat Summerall was announcing. His quiet voice and restraint--his gracious ability to actually stop talking now and then and just let us watch--combined with after-church stupor, inevitably produced a very idyllic Sunday-afternoon nap!

Funny... Mrs T asked me if I wanted an overnight stay at a 5 star resort with golf package for my bday. So, duh, I'm like woohoo! yeah!...

20 minutes later she announced we're playing 9 holes at the local military base due to cost.

/sigh

women. Stop torturing us already.

At first I thought that was a baby porcupine (couldn't read the caption). So to further my edjumication, I went to the repository of all accurate information on the internet, Wikipedia. Among the mating rituals is this gem:

"A male porcupine urinates on a female porcupine prior to mating, spraying the urine at high velocity."

106 I went to high school in Augusta . Used to be they would have local athletes as gallery guards for a little part time job . Anyway , in 73 I was lucky enough to get that job . Friend and I were on the 1st hole . Once the field played through No.1 we got to watch the rest of the tourney . Pretty cool spring job . A bunch of Augusta residents rent their houses out for Masters week . I suspect these days they can make 6 months of mortgage payments just for renting their house out for a week .

108 There's usually a goldarn gullywasher at least one day during Masters . When we were there it was blowing probably 40 mph in gusts as well as heavy rain . The guys just kept on playing like it was nothing . The honorary starters are pretty cool . We got to see some of the real old timers of golf . I remember Gene Sarazen especially . Guy was in his eighties then and could still belt it pretty good . First time I ever saw someone wearing knickers .

Never posted a comment here before but I read daily. I feel compelled to after reading the Casper/McClary connection. I had the great fortune of hearing McClary speak while at the USAF Squadron Officers School in 1997.

He left me with one phrase I will always have in my head. FIDO- Forget it, and drive on.

If he told the Casper story, I don't remember. As an avid golfer, I am gratified to hear the connection.

But I do remember Lt McClary very well, and every time my life goes "Tango Uniform" I try to remember to Forget it and Drive on!
