So, it looks like Al Gore may want to make a sequel to An Inconvenient Truth. Sorry Al, that dog don't hunt.
Laurie David believes "everything in that movie has come to pass". Really? Was there an increase in destructive tornadic activity? We're in our third straight year of record low activity. Increase in hurricanes? Nope. Obama has the lowest hurricane frequency of any President. North Pole will be ice free? Nah, multi-year ice is growing. What exactly did come to pass then from that movie? Kelo v. City of New London
Remember the Kelo v. City of New London Supreme Court case? It seems it all may have been for naught as the 90-acre plot once earmarked for office buildings, luxury apartments and a new marina, remains vacant.
So how does New London, specifically Fort Trumbull, look now?“The homeowners were dispossessed for nothing,” wrote The Boston Globe’s Jeff Jacoby. “Fort Trumbull was never redeveloped. Pfizer itself bailed out of New London in 2009. The Kelo decision was a disaster, as even the city’s present political leaders acknowledge.”

Military Inventions
11 incredible products that were really invented by the U.S. military.
It turns out that you were right all along when you called it "duck" tape. Soldiers in World War II first using the new adhesive called it a variety of names, one of them being an homage to the small water fowl. Johnson & Johnson had created a tape for infantrymen that could seal their ammunition cases in any weather and be ripped from the adhesive with their bare hands. After the war, the tape got its grey coloring (it was a camo-esque green pattern before, go figure) and made its way into hardware stores. Eventually it became known as a good wrap for air ducts, kicking off its new name and decades of confusion about whether there really is a "t" at the end.
Scenario
So morons, what do you do in this situation? Father hires escort who turns out to be someone he knows far too well.

It really is a crappy wrap for ducts. As it will dry out over time and leak like a sieve. So it seemed like a good duct tape when introduced and proven to be crappy 5 years later.

I will be back to take any and all abuse in a hot minute. I have to run up to the 24HR drugstore on the corner, since my last trip to the grocery store resulted in my accidental purchase of DIET ginger ale... who drinks this shit, anyway?

Win 8 has downgrade privileges to Win 7 for the same license. So if the OS of Evil was installed on your Femputer at the factory, you can devo it to 7 on the same machine.
Google for the process.

I thought i'd heard of President's pardoning someone for all past crimes. I would presume that included crimes for which they haven't been convicted.
Posted by: D-Lamp at April 04, 2014 10:59 PM (bb5+k)
My understanding is that the President can pardon an individual for any identifiable crimes or accusations. So a Prez could say, "I pardon X for all crimes for which he was convicted on April 8, 2009." Or "I pardon Z for all indictments returned by the Grand Jury on September 14, 2010." But -- again, as I understand it -- the President may not pardon anyone for unspecified wrongdoings or classes of actions. In other words, a President may not say, "I pardon Eric Holder for all instances of perjury during my term in office." or "I pardon Eric Holder for anything involved with Fast-and-Furious."

Bookmarks are easy to move off of FF. I was actually referring to passwords. If I recall correctly, you can't copy/paste passwords off the passwords list, but I've done the print screen thing before to transfer passwords. You still have to add 'em manually, but it's better than trying to rely on memory.

Bernhardt's actually very good in it. Crazy bitch indeed. It's a tryly great film. For my money, Deniro's 2 best are KOC and Midnight Run, both from the 80's and both comedies. Casino is a great movie and IMHo better than Goodfellas, which is also great. Raging Bull? You should probably see it, it's technically brilliant, but I fell it's overrated. It's ok, but it's not all that and a bag of chips.

::: arrives for a party :::
::: walk in to find known local arrogant shitweasel trying to kindle fireplace :::
::: head for kitchen, grabs beer, scopes out large pot locations :::
::: shrieks of horror from living room :::
::: fills largest pot with water and heads over :::
::: extinguish pile of burning kindling that has rolled out onto (new!) carpet :::
::: accolades :::
::: dumb shit departs, ranting about lawsuit over "defective" fireplace :::
Would have loved to have seen that guy trying to get a fire going in the woods at night with minimal tools.

In my kit-
1. Flint striker (spark maker)
2. Steel wool
3. Cotton balls
4. Petroleum jelly
Catch a spark in a ball of steel wool, blow gently, watch it go. Add a cotton ball impregnated with petroleum jelly and presto- fire as quick as striking a match.
(Yes, I said "impregnated" on the ONT, knowing the risks full well)

It's easy to store those cotton ball/vaseline tinder balls using a drinking straw.
Pinch off one end with pliers and melt the flat end with a lighter
Cut to length and stuff with the cotton, leaving about 1/2" of room at the end
Pinch off the open end and melt to seal
When you need tinder, cut both ends with your knife and push out with a stick or twig

I'm not sure if the rules for "a presidential pardon" and "a pardon of a president" are exactly the same. It certainly looks like they tried to stay within the format of the former, despite the subject being the latter.

Ford pardoned Nixon, obviously at a time that Ford was a president and Nixon was no longer a president. He was just a private citizen at that point. It was a presidential pardon of a man who used to be president. Maybe I'm missing something in the point you are trying to make?

But seriously, lighters can be fragile and leak out their fuel over time, kitchen matches are one-time-use and not waterproof.
Carrying multiple methods of firestarting is always a good idea, and paradoxically you use the more difficult methods when conditions are good, keep the easy stuff for use when things are bad (rain, blizzard, windstorm etc)

I believe that the "beyond his authority to do so" was actually raised, but....(a) Presidents are not normally liable for Presidential acts; (b) the remedy for Presidential misconduct is impeachment, not damages/jail time; (c) the incoming administration (Ford's) was clearly signaling that the era of flogging Nixon was conclusively over, so the AG wasn't going to press things; (d) Congress wasn't going to press things; (e) nobody else had standing.
In the event of a hypothetical all-encompassing pardon of Holder, the situation is entirely different. Each jurisdiction/grand jury/etc can go after Holder, Holder can brandish his "get out of jail free" card, and each prosecutor can then take it to a court and argue the merits of the pardon.

The President shall be commander in chief of the Army and Navy of the United States, and of the militia of the several states, when called into the actual service of the United States; he may require the opinion, in writing, of the principal officer in each of the executive departments, upon any subject relating to the duties of their respective offices, and he shall have power to grant reprieves and pardons for offenses against the United States, except in cases of impeachment.
It looks to me like his pardon power is unconstrained by the text, with the sole exception of impeachments. If the Congress wants to impeach someone, the President will be unable to prevent it. But other than that, when it comes to Federal crimes, the President's pardon power is absolute.

One of those light two wheel shopping carts urbanites use to carry groceries in the city. Carry the most essential stuff in a backpack, supplementals in the cart. Then you can drop the cart and move fast if things go really bad. You'll still have the essentials.

What do you want to know specifically? Esbit stoves have a good track record. Got them as standard issue in the army back in the day. They are light and work well, even in the tropical wet. The downside is long term use. The tablets are not terribly easy to source and if you get enough to last awhile, then what you gain by the lightweight stove, you lose in having to lug around a whole bunch of tabs. As a short term thing, though, they are excellent.

A "later" Tuesday IS a "no"; a "later" Monday is way too damned close to one. I sincerely hope you haven't used up all your runway.
If you were repeatedly getting the stall this week, I was leaving open the possibility of coming up Monday to help with some unblocking. I'm not gathering that you've been pressing them, however.
And, really, don't worry about me now....I'm getting better, despite my voice being a rasping croak.

Got invited to Boss's New McMansion about 20 years ago, back when yuppie know-nothings were still a joke and not the norm. Slyly noted to self that white carpeting extended right up to edge of fireplace, glass doors were of the ornamental, non-airtight variety, and fireplace had a proper damper control for actual fires, but with "switch-on" gas log installed over grate. Saw trouble coming.
Sure enough, proud new owner had to demonstrate several times how Big Fire could be made to flame up with remote control, and how cool it looked behind glass. And then to demonstrate energy efficiency, went to top of stairs and turned on the whole-house fan.
Flame leapt out of door gaps like from a blacksmith's forge. White carpeting suddenly two-tone! Nylon fibers had started to singe before I could get to the damper handle and, more or less, save the place from burning down. They got a nice new "hearth rug" the next week, though I suspect it was polyester.
The next Boss up the ladder from that one (should have known better, came from the real west) had a single-layer metal flue pipe inside a vinyl-siding chimney enclosure. Got a newspaper-log roller and burned that house to the ground.

The whole lightweight camping/hiking/survival scheme is full of fascinating design and implementation questions. A very complex trade space.
Some of the kit out there for the extreme long range lightweight hikers is just crazy. Titanium and carbon fiber and who knows what else, ruthlessly engineered to save mass down to the last hundredth of a gram, costing absolutely tip top dollars.
We're not trying to push the limits of what's physically and financially attainable. Just trying to make sensible decisions about disaster and disruption resilience.

Someone told me that they borrowed a friend's Esbit and promptly ruined a meal with the harsh chemical odor the tablet smoke imparted to the food. They were hungry but couldn't eat what they had cooked.
I have wondered if this might perhaps be down to cut-rate discount brands of tablet. Or aged milsurp tablet stock that had chemically reacted with its packaging while in storage.

They'll break the handle off a plastic spoon to save that eighth-of-an-ounce. And the stuff they eat, oh Jesus. One thing I like about camping is the camp cookery. Even back-packing, I'll carry a small dutch oven or a thick aluminum skillet. And I cook from "staples," not pre-made freeze-dried space food. They pack fine.
Sadly and accordingly, a lot of the special stoves made for backpackers are not really for cooking, only for boiling a small amount of water. And mixing greenie-powders into it. Put yourself on that diet for a week, and you're in for another week of distress when you come off of it.
Yes I can envision, darkly, some Mission where that regimen might be called for. But all of my concepts of going into back country for pleasure, and most of my bug-out strategies as well, involve at least one piece of iron.

Hmmmm. Maybe. I remember them being a bit stinky, but, not affecting anything that we brewed up. Not tea or coffee or chow. You would normally cook up something in a relatively high can or a billy or something. Ideally covered, but not necessarily. Did they cook/boil up under cover, or on a tin plate, or something? Otherwise the tabs shouldn't do that really. It might be the age of the tabs, like you suspect I haven't had any experience with... wait a minute, I likely did use old stuff. We often got all sorts of ancient shit issued to us. Even WW1 shit on occasion. So, old tabs were likely used, but didn't misbehave like that. Dunno. Maybe it was the brand?

NorCal. So our baseline resilience scenario is a quake big and bad enough to unhouse us, with long delays for humanitarian aid.
The kicker on that is water. Some funds have been spent in recent years to improve the seismic stability of the water distribution in Commiefornia, but we both still remember being without line pressure for some time after the Loma Prieta quake of '89. Which was NOT a genuine "big one".
Water is goddamned heavy. Big trouble to lug around.
The missus is an experienced amateur outdoorswoman who doesn't panic easily and has camped under difficult conditions. It's just that carrying adequate provision and kit is tough for her.
If I'm there to be the big dumb beast of burden, things get simpler, but we can't assume I will always be at home just in time for the shit to hit the fan. Hence the grabbable lightweight "satellite" bag concept atop the main bag.

Note the recent Asiana Airlines crash at SFO. Where the first responders managed to run over and crush to death an unfortunate girl who had survived the crash and been ejected from the wreckage. Top notch work there by our unionized public safety workers.

I was assuming you lived in town and were starting the bugout from home. If you are 30 min out of town you live where I would have rented the storage unit.
This discussion has got me thinking maybe getting a UTV might be worth it. I want one anyways but they could make for a great bugout vehicle since laws covering them would be out in a disaster. And alternate routes would be available vs my car.

Now that is something worth thinking about, and most people skip it when they're doing the "Going to Mars" game of prep. It's typical for dwellers of the biggest highway-bound cities to know the "surface level" alternate streets, and escape routes, because of traffic jams. But people in more efficient towns don't need to think of that, so they don't.
You need to look at your surrounding neighborhoods topographically, not by the political and property-line maps you use for civilized transportation. Especially, pay attention to invisible watercourses, like artificial streams, ditches, and detention ponds, and know their flood and drought seasons. Once you look at the suburb as a battlefield, there's a surprising number of "egresses." Unless you're on the VFD, don't count on practicing these much.
Ever notice, the newer four wheel utility vehicles are about the same size and HP as the WWII Jeep? I keep waiting for Jeep to notice.

Y'all talking about your bugout places makes me very happy about where I am. I am living at the bugout place for people who live in El Paso and surrounding areas. Have a well here, and a pretty defensible road coming in, and a little place up the mountain that has water, even if the neighbors have to get together and hook up our generators to keep it running, but far enough away from the zombies that I think we are fine.
And fires - reminds me of when family would go camping. First thing was, find firewood, then find mom what we called a poking stick, then leave the fire to mom.
Now that she's gone, I get the poking stick, to make the fire burn just so, and I usually get the honor of starting it.

For the lucky few who already live in The Gulch, it's important to get the neighbors thinking about things like pooling electrical resources, and co-operating on the water supply. This is what "Zombie" games are all about -- a way to mention it without tipping your hand too much. Makes for great social affairs, for those privileged to have that opportunity.

Also the fancy bike/walking paths in the city are all roads for a UTV in an emergency. And they make nice maps for those trails.

Neighbors where I live are already pretty much all on the same page as far as survival. Most moved there back when...
I am not that worried about me and the bh, we will be fine. It's those who need to get up here I worry about.
I just hope I can hold on to everything I have, and next generation sees the practicality of what we have set up for surviving instead of selling off for $$$ if we're not here when the time comes to really need it.

And, funny bebe's boobs, Hubby calls me his pack mule when we are unloading my "gathering" expeditions. His back isn't that great, so I set everything up so he doesn't have to twist at all when he's lifting, and I try to take the heavier stuff, since thank goodness my back is fine so far.
The only reason I use those recyclable bags is because you can pack more in them, and I can put it over my shoulder and it's the right height and doesn't bang into my knees when I am carrying stuff. Have to have two bags the same weight, so I don't mess up my back.
Very short legs, and it helps not to have the stuff banging you in the knee while hauling!

I am excited because hubby is going wild turkey hunting when we get back from niece's wedding in May. Looking forward to hearing about how to get them. I have seen them on our mountain property a lot, and want to learn the tricks to that. I hear they are way smarter than the domesticated.
I can't go along, because of way too much work then, but looking forward to learning the way to hunt them.

Read a piece by someone else who grew up in Shitcargo.
They said that their family just loved to argue politics back and forth across the dinner and/or holiday table.
So when this person got old enough, they had the brainstorm, to say to the rest of the family, "Hey, enough talk without action. Time for all of us to get directly politically involved and active, whaddaya say?"
Instant visceral fear from the family elders. "No! If we do that... they will _destroy_ us. Ruin our businesses, wreck our careers, threaten our safety."
Horrible but true. That's how Chi-town machine politics work.

I've read the same thing, somewhere. Yet the first time I saw a digital camera, I said 'Those things are going to kill the film market.' But it took a while, as prices were steep to start and quality could still be beat by film (plus film was more versatile).
