16 My favorites are the honest ones: "HELL YES I'm going to use it to buy cheap wine!" *** John Stossel did a show, 'Freeloaders', in which he posed as a bum asking for money on a DC sidewalk. He first said the usual, something like "Homeless, need help" then he changed the sign to read "Need money for beer". Guess which raised more money.

No way to tell who's fake and who's not, so I basically flip a mental coin when deciding whether to give anything.

He of course never figured out I wasn't a touch, and he'd follow me half a fucking block asking for a cigarette. Anyway, we had an engineering student from Taiwan living at our house "Verminshire Arms", and after a trip back home as a thank-you present for not killing him, he gave us all a pack of "Long Life" cigarettes. These things would melt a statue - because some of the smokers in the house didn't wake up for days. Short story long - I gave this bum one of these Long Life gems, and I never saw him again.

83 In an effort to get a crossbow vs longbow style argument a goin', and with the full knowledge that hobos are deeply memed here at the HQ,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hobo

A hobo is a migratory worker or homeless vagabond—especially one who is penniless. The term originated in the Western—probably Northwestern—United States around 1890.[1] Unlike "tramps"—who work only when they are forced to, and "bums"—who do not work at all, "hobos" are itinerant workers.

The pictured guy is a bum, not a hobo. Bums are the bottom of the barrel. If you're holding a sign saying 'Need Work', you are a hobo, or at least simulating one. Whereas holding a 'Need Money' sign leaves no doubt.

***
The government has long been changing from an institution whose primary purpose was to protect the lives and property of the productive class to one that exists to extort money from the productive class.

So all that being said, relying on the police for your personal and immediate protection is of questionable value, especially in bluer areas where the move to the government being a protection racket is more advanced.

After all, how much money does DC take in when it arrests a hobo?

92 I had an uncle who lived in San Fran years ago. On his days off he'd play his guitar on street corners for a half day or so and clear around 100 bucks a day. Tax free, obviously. He said, in San Fran, they just assume you're poor or homeless (he was neither) and give you money.

That sorta makes sense.

I knew a priest who lived/worked in a bad part of town, he would get approached all the time.  He would get tired of seeing the same  bums approaching him, thinking he was an easy mark, so he asked another priest about it.

The recommendation was, tell the bums  the church rectory will give them food and various sundries.  They kept a supply on hand for that very purpose, and all the bums had to do was walk a couple blocks to the church.

Very few of them ever did, but it kept the priests from having to feel like they were being taken advantage of, or more importantly, to be in violation of the vows to help the poor.

Hello from here way Down Under again

No cyclone here in Sydney but it is raining...which means wet kitties and muddy paw prints everywhere

In the Sydney CBD there are regular hobos planted on strategic corners on footpaths but I have yet to see an original and funny sign

All of them have sick mothers in the country they must visit and have no $$$ to get there or an occasional plea for dog food money (and they have the doggie with them)

I do like the buskers who play  a variety of instruments - and an occasional singer who actually sounds OK...some have lots of coins/notes in the guitar cases etc placed in front

Provo passed an ordinance that prohibits panhandling at iirc curbside. I guess that will stop the firefighters' "boot" drives, but I'm good with that because those are really disruptive and dangerous. Stupidly, Provo's sister city, Orem, has not taken any action, so they've just shifted to there. When you live in an area with as many churches as this one has, it is really hard to see panhandlers as anything other than predators. If you need help, you can find it.

Also, integrating women into the combat units? America truly is on the dawn of where I want it to be.

And if you could elect Obama a third time to prove that you are no longer a racist country that would be wonderful.

First, he has a point.  Less pay means that over time you end up with only the guys who REALLY want to be there.  Which in turns raises discipline.  I do not advocate this approach at all....but it is an approach.

Sorta like hope isn't a method....but it IS a technique....

Second, he's a Marine.  They're all about trying to make their quality of life suck - and suck to the max extent possible.  They are perversely proud of this fact.  And if you doubt that (and I know you know this), compare living standards on ANY Marine base with ANY Air Force Base, Navy Base or Station, or Army Camp, Post, Fort, or Station.

"Sobering" would be the best term to use when describing the comparison.
