Olympics Open Thread - [Niedermeyer's Dead Horse]
— Open Blogger

The word incredible is suitable to describe last night's opening ceremony in Sochi: Incredible special effects that sometimes worked and sometimes didn't. Incredible glossing-over of the facts in the telling of Russia's history. Incredibly bad coverage by NBC wherein they referred to the Soviet Union as , I'm not kidding here, "one of modern historyÂ’s pivotal experiments". Russia's own Garry Kasparov has been on a tear for days.

And Bob Costas....

Bob, did you drink the yellow water? I can't stand to look at him on a normal day but, for NBC to expect me to look at him with that gross, runny, squinty eye... no thank you.

The games are now underway. The United States hasn't quite started raking in the medals, yet. Congratulations to Sage Kotsenburg and Hannah Kearney of Team USA. Kotsenburg took the gold medal in the Men's Slopestyle competition and Kearney took the bronze in Ladies Freestyle Skiing Moguls. You can keep tabs on the official medal count at the Sochi Olympics site, where you can filter the results in any number of ways.

And, though it seems so long ago, Gabe reminds us, via Twitter, that this never gets old:

8 The speed skater in the CSM article said his skates cost $2500, replacement blades 500 bucks a pair. I bet those rifles cost upwards of 10 grand, I'll go check.

We watched some of the figure skating and the speed skating today. Two things stood out: the attendance was way down and the heads of state were in attendance. Except Barky McFuckstick.

Watching the King and Queen of the Netherlands cheering on their skaters was pretty cool.

13 Again, I'm not as shocked by this as I am by Costas interviewing a visibly stoned Barack Obama. High as a kite on national television.

The guy is starting to unravel. He craves attention and adulation, and yet he is now so politically radioactive that his own party's Senate candidates are refusing to be seen with him on the campaign trail. That visibly stings the Narcissist in Chief. He got openly bitchy about Kay Hagan's demurral just a few days ago.

Imagine how uncorked he might become if Reid becomes Senate Minority Leader next year.

14 So where did I watch the opening ceremonies?

Inside an apartment in the Burj Khalifah, the world's tallest building.

I totally scored, getting an invite from a couple that I met 26 hours before.  Spent the evening with them in the resident's lounge on the 123rd floor, before heading to the airport.

68 A Chicago Olympics would be a complete and utter disaster, anyway.  We can mock the Russians, with good reason, but the graft and corruption Chicago has to offer is second to none.  I'd imagine it would be about 400% of budget when it was all said and done, and the rest of the state would have been ready to secede and form the 51st state.

I can't watch this, it makes me physically ill."  She said, "Yeah, this is terrible." And that was the end of that.

111 I am huge fan of winter olympics and winter sports but I have to say nearly all the winter olympics sports are useless. ski jumping, luge, bobsled, downhill skiing, and of course curling, there is essentially no usefulness in any of 'em. biathalon is useful but everyone knows cross country skiing is a stand in for waterboarding when the temperature is below 32 degrees.

Very technical top section is where he'll likely win the race tomorrow. The other skiers can't match his courage and technique up there. He gets up to 70mph very quickly after plunging out of the starter shack. They showed a wipe out of note on one of the three big jumps. Dude bloodied his face when he hit head first and didn't stop wiping out for quite a while. One of the jumps finds the skiers going 80 to 100 yards in the air. 200 Check out this article about what Bode Miller said after today's training run. http://tinyurl.com/knxchlf KRASNAYA POLYANA, Russia – Two days after stating that consequences ultimately define downhill skiing, U.S. skier Bode Miller warned that Sochi's brutal downhill course has the potential to kill in these Games. Saturday's course had a harder pack and icier conditions than in previous runs – a wicked combination that led 10 racers to crash and 19 others to completely skip their final practice opportunity. Slovenian racer Rok Perko took a particularly explosive tumble, leaving shaken and with a bloody nose. But in typical swashbuckling style, Miller attacked the course rather than dialing back, and finished with the fastest downhill run for the second time in three days. But Miller wasn't in celebration at the end of the run. If anything, he was wide-eyed after watching so many crashes, including a near disaster by teammate Marco Sullivan that was averted at the last moment. *** At one point, Sullivan wobbled after a jump and careened toward a lightly barricaded safety fence, saving himself at the last moment by steering off course and abandoning his run. "He almost killed himself," Miller told reporters. "If that crash doesn't go just the way it went, he goes flying through B [safety] nets going 75 [miles per hour] and straight into the trees. "I was going to go easier but seeing those first couple of guys crashing, I decided not to do that. It is so damn fast and the snow is so hard that you don't want to sacrifice edge pressure and grip on the snow for aerodynamics. …If you are not totally focused, this course can kill you. It is one of those courses where I don't think you are safe going easy."

246 Posted by: Ski mania at February 08, 2014 06:20 PM (5Q1ZU) *** We were chatting here yesterday about the dangers. Shaun White baled on on f the competitions rather than chance injury and be unable to compete in the Half Pipe. A female skier injured her knees after coming down hard due to extended hang-time off a ramp. From what I've read, the fault lies not so much with the facilities themselves as much as with the failure of the IOC to properly test the facilities which usually would allow for modifications prior to the start of the games. As one skier put it, they are basically using the Olympians as crash test dummies.

297 And I will just piss everyone off and say I thought they handled the communism part pretty well. The actual Bolshevik bit was visually unpleasant and unsettling, and they referenced the propaganda train, which I thought was pretty amazing in itself. As far as the Cold Era segment, if we did a similar bit, I doubt we'd be showcasing turning dogs and fire hoses on black people who wanted to drink out of the same water fountain as white people, or the internment camps, or the Trail of Tears or anything else like that. (And yes I know it's not anywhere near as horrible as Stalin's record, etc) But I didn't see anything that particularly glorified communism.

After welcoming everyone to Russia, with it's history, culture, and music, they ended by reminding us why we're there in the first place. 367 339 On the other hand you did not have people on TV saying that the Bataan Death march was a "Pivotal Experiment" in the history of the world. My point about it is that if Germany was hosting an Olympics and showed Nazi Imagery (not withstanding that most common Nazi symbolds are illegal to display in Germany) would we hear the same cheers and so forth? To me Communism and Nazism are the same thing. I was just as pissed when everyone was slobbering all over China during the summer games. Now everyone is free to do as they will. Putin is going to include soviet imagery because he himself does look on it fondly. There is still a sizeable portion of the Russian citizenry that looks at it fondly. That is fine. (not fine, but you know what I mean.) I just do not like the whitewashing from supposedly free, "enlightened" people. You cannot look back on history with rose colored glasses, everything should be looked at, warts and all and then weighed on both it's merits and demerits. I am not attacking you, I agree they should be allowed to do it, it is just what our reaction to it should be.

Out and out communist and soviet-phile. He is there standing with his hammer and sickle pins on his shirt and talking about how great the soviets were and all I could say was: "You are one of the useful idiots." He had no idea what he was advocating because we did not even get into a lot of the worst of the soviet excess even when I was in high school. The best part is that Valerie Jarrett and co. had bought vast tracks of property betting on getting the games. Maybe that's why she's so pissed.

406 398 That is an old theme. The "if Lenin had lived" camp. It is the same thing as people during the purges saying "If only Stalin knew" what people were doing in his name. Strictly speaking, Marx theorized that communism could not happen in Russia or China, because he presupposed an older, fully industrialized nation (neither really were.) His targets for the "inevitable" communist uprising were Great Britain and France.

408 Communism wasn't just a 5-year blip on the radar; it pretty well covered the entire 20th century in Russia. If you're going to do a "history of Russia" theme for your opening ceremonies, you HAVE to address it. If they'd left it out, we'd be sneering that they were "whitewashing" their history and get them going the other direction. I could have done without the floating Soviet Realism sculptures, but it wasn't as heavy on the communist propaganda as things like this can be. Maybe we've been spoiled by our own cultural meltdown into thinking that an orgy of apologetic hand-wringing is de rigueur, but the Russians aren't like that, and they're not going to oblige.

421 >>Has anyone noticed a bit of a ..I don't know if meme is the proper term, but I keep seeing here and there in comments at various places about how "real" communism hasn't been given a fair chance...that Russia was evil Bolsheviks, not true communism.... Oddly enough, this is sort of the thing successive commie leaders often said about their predecessors in the old USSR. Comrade Stalin was downgraded after his death for not doing it right. Here's a fun fact about Mother Russia. After the fall of the USSR among the things they had to change was the national anthem. References to Lenin, Stalin, Communism, just didn't seem cool to most people. They went through some changes and ended up with a song without lyrics. Among the people who complained the loudest were athletes who complained that a wordless anthem was not very inspiring when played at sporting events. So Vlad decided to make a new anthem. Took the music from the old Soviet anthem and grafted on some new lyrics. You can take the boy out of communism but you can't take the commie out of the commie.

The current Russian anthem uses the same music as the old Soviet anthem, and if you hear it (instrumentally or with lyrics) there is a very "Russian" feel to it.  Sort of natural to keep the music and change the words.

Germany did a similar thing.  Haydn's wonderful music was paired with nationalist poetry from a half-century later to produce "Deutschland uber Alles" (Deutschlandlied), which of course has nothing to do with Nazi hegemonism and racial theory.  The first stanza of the song has geographical references which were not linked to Nazi irredentism but the original version of German nationalism before there *was* a Germany to speak of.  Since the war the far less poetic third stanza has been the official lyrics, and of course the Horstwessellied banned (East Germany had their own lame anthem which of course disappeared in 1990).

As to the opening ceremonies, didn't watch 'em (never do), but FFS let's not adopt moral imbecility in our comparisons.  The Trail of Tears is supposed to somehow be equated with the epochal slaughter and terror and degradation of the Soviet Union?  I just put down "Savage Continent" after 100 pages because I couldn't take the NPR-stupid imbecilic moral equivalence (and glaring inaccuracies) suffusing the thing, sure don't expect to find it here.

A focus on cultural history and sports would have been a perfect theme for the ceremonies, avoiding all the issues here.  And yes, Russia DOES have a history about which they should be, from the start, troubled and even apologetic.  Don't recall the Munich ceremonies - how did they handle their similar historical problem?

No; but if you're honest, you'll at least equate it with this:

Or, if English, with the shit various of our governments got up to in Ireland.

483 Don't recall the Munich ceremonies - how did they handle their similar historical problem? Posted by: non-purist at February 08, 2014 08:21 PM (afQnV) Well, that was quite a long time ago, and it seems to me that these insanely ambitious "History of the World and Humanity and the Evolution of Goodness and Progress" spectaculars are a more recent innovation. It used to be we got to see some nice folk dancing in traditional costumes, then a good parade of the athletes and the "official" stuff of raising the flag and lighting the torch. I don't remember anything as lavish as what we have now, and it seems that every 2 years they try to top what's gone before.

491

boulder, if we do even a generous (i.e. only midly morally imbecilic) pairing of "worst moments", we'll run out in the US before we get through the Russian civil war post-1917.  And just for clarity, I think it would be far more amusing to pair up non-native "native" American worst moments with each other with Euro-colonial worst moments towards any of them as a warm-up.  Not even talking the galactic evil of the Aztecs or Incas, just the homely genocide that was SOP among many North American tribes/empires.

But for the UK, the NHS bit in the opening ceremonies really suffices.  Not even white-washing evil history, but revelling in ongoing self-debasement and under-achievement through self-inflicted idiocy.  One is darker, but the latter is creepy because it is the living embodiment of Orwell's worst fears.

Looking back at that expulsion of the Crimean Tatars I'd mentioned, that might even be a high moral point of Stalin's reign. At least Stalin wasn't trying to kill the Tatars (as opposed to how he treated the Ukraine). For Uncle Joe that's progress!

And... the disabled person will also receive a complimentary ticket for a guest because, you know... disabled. I was there last summer, just after a soccer ref was stabbed and beheaded at a soccer match. Stabbed. Beheaded. Soccer. Rio during the day, party. Rio after dark, scary.

575 Nowadays, the hospital tosses her out in 48 hours or less and the family is scattered around the globe. Posted by: Grampa Jimbo at February 08, 2014 08:47 Grampa, by the we had our third kid hospital tried to kick momma out in 24 hours. I balked and we got an extra day and got it covered by insurance.

Posted by: olddog in mo I was begging to be let out after 24 hours. I had 3 c-sections too. I just can't get any rest in the hospital when they come check your vitals every f'ing hour, day and night. I'd rather be at home.

581 "I don't understand how Costas got the gig over Richard Simmons." Putin doesn't want teh gheys in his country anymore because of the declining birthrate. The USSR always had a dynamic of tolerating and prosecuting homosexuals when it suited. One decade they'd be recruited as agents, with special perks, against the decadent intolerant west and others they'd be sent to the mental hospital as dangerous deviants poisoning the society of the new man. The Orthodox Church isn't terribly warm or accepting to them either. Where Putin is a fairly devout Orthodox Christian and of the old school soviet mindset, his stance is obvious.

584 My god, I do NOT understand the communist apologists. Stalin killed far more people than Hitler, yet the left embraces the ideology and ignores the horrendous murder the ideology hath wrought. We should have movies about the gulags, memorials dedicated to Stalin's victims, and the Russian people need to make sure that the world "Never Forgets," because if we do NOT completely and utterly expose the crimes of this ideology, it will kill millions more. What will it take to thoroughly discredit once and for all the gulags of Stalin and enslavement of Eastern Europe, Russia, Cambodia, North Korea. Why our are artists NOT telling this story through movies, books, and music?

585 Somebody should alert Costas to the fact that Russia's greatest poet, A. Pushkin, was an octoroon. That ought to keep him busy working that angle.

586 boulder, if we do even a generous (i.e. only midly morally imbecilic) pairing of "worst moments", we'll run out in the US before we get through the Russian civil war post-1917. Posted by: non-purist Thanks for posting that. As a director of a small town hist. soc. in N. IL I run into this "we treated the Indians so bad all the time. If I have the time and inclincation, depending on the person, I point out the Sauk and the Fox were driven out of Ontario into MI, then by other tribes into Wi, then by other tribes into N. IL. Yeah, they were a whole friendly bunch of f*ckers. Ig you look at history it's the story of mankind. Wake the f*ck up and America needs to stand up today! (end of rant)
