One Reason I've Lost Interest in the Olympics

As I've gotten older I've become more and more disenchanted with the Olympics. Part of this is the sheer amount of corruption and politics that's tied up with it these days but a large part is just due to the fact that nothing shown in the games has any interest to me.

My earliest memories are of the 1976 and 1980 games and I remember watching entire events and following individual athletes through the Olympics. But today the networks don't show the events I have an interest in (which are mostly ones involving speed or strength over form and art) though you might get a highlight of an event if you're lucky. In fact most of the Olympic television coverage these days has become a reality show about athletes going to the Olympics rather than the actual Olympic events themselves. But another factor that this chart shows is that the number of events has doubled since 1988 which means each event gets even less coverage than before. Feh.

In Praise Of Sochi Schadenfreude

On why we should celebrate Russia's failure.

We don't even have to bring up the fact that Putin has consistently undermined American interests, abetting brutal dictatorships in Syria and North Korea - not to mention, shielding Iran's nuclear ambitions. Surrounded by an army of 40,000 soldiers and police in a "ring of steel," Bob Costas can whitewash his host's misdeeds, but Russia's government is not only corrupt, and not only is it intolerant of gays, but according to Amnesty International, human rights violations by the government include killings, enforced disappearances and torture, and they are "frequent." According to Freedom of Information index by Reporters Without Borders, Putin belongs on a list with Chinese President Xi Jinping, North Korea's Kim Jong-un, Iran's Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the Italian Mafia and Chechnya's Ramzan Kadyrov.
That's not to say that Russians, with or without Putin, don't have a long way to go. It's not to say that the Russian people don't have their quirks. But if Sochi is, as Putin claims, a vision a "new Russia," lots of people around the world will see that the new Russia is extraordinarily similar to the old Russia.
This is his Olympics. We should all get in a good laugh at his misfortune.

It was his politics, mostly, that lifted Herblock above his lack of technical skill to the Pulitzers and the medals and the honorary degrees. The Post reviewer lists his big issues: "fascism, war, the bomb [presumably against], the environment, civil rights, lobbying reform [presumably for]." He didn't get much more complicated than that. The crudity of his politics and the crudity of his draftsmanship were intimately connected.

I've been so amused by all the pictures and stories coming out of Sochi of how unprepared the area is for all the foreigners and reporters arrive for the Olympics. Is this any surprise from a society that continually failed to meet its five-year plans? The picture of the sign in the toilets telling people to place their toilet paper in a trash can rather than the toilet brought back unfond memories from the time I spent in the Soviet Union in 1979. That is what we had to do at all the toilets. And we were lucky if we had something recognizable as toilet paper to use. Often we had cut up squares of newspaper giving rise to many jokes about the best use of Pravda. Once we encountered squares of wax paper - not the most absorbent material which somehow misses the point of toilet paper. I wrote my husband at the time that we were inevitably going to win the Cold War since no modern country that could manage to provide toilets and toilet paper could defeat us. What is amazing is that they have not made much progress in modern bathroom implements since 1979.

Remembering Robinson "Robbie" Risner

He made a name for himself as an Ace in Korea but it was his time as a POW in Vietnam where he proved what he was really made of.

James Robinson Risner was a man of humble origins, son of an Arkansas sharecropper, educated at secondary school level, not particularly ambitious, a common man save for two things: He could fly the hell out of an airplane; and, under terribly difficult circumstances as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam, he rose to a level of heroic leadership matched by few men in American military history.

...It was the Korean War that put Robbie Risner's name on the map of aerial warriors of that era, and became what he described decades later as the most gratifying period of his life. He finagled his way out of his recalled Guard unit into a front line air combat Group equipped with the best aircraft of the period, and paid back the favor by shooting down 8 MIGs. He also pulled off other incredible feats of airmanship. He once pushed the damaged and fuel-starved plane of his wingman with the nose of his own aircraft out of hostile skies into friendly territory for a safe bailout. That is the stuff of which legends are made.

And on Sep. 16th, 1965 he was shot down and captured by the North Vietnamese and held for the next seven and half years.

At the time of Robbie's capture there were 27 other Americans incarcerated in Hanoi, separated from each other, all doing their best to abide by the Code of Conduct for American Fighting Men. Once Risner determined that he was the Senior Ranking Office, he began to put structure and guidance into the POWs' lives, a sense of order and community, the very thing their captors were trying desperately to prevent. He would pay a terrible price for that leadership when the guards would catch him communicating, but they couldn't stop him. No matter how brutal the beatings, the next day he would be at it again.

In the early days he was generally held in that small cell block mentioned earlier, and since most new prisoners were held there temporarily, after initial interrogation and torture sessions, Risner used brief moments of guard absence to "induct" new men into his POW command. His message to me as I lay on the floor of my cell, straining to hear his every word, remain burned into my brain even now, almost 48 years later: He told me his name, and asked mine and my rank. Then he said: "You must learn the tap code, and here's how it works...memorize it, and practice it, it's vital." And he added: "Eat everything they give you, no matter how disgusting; it'll keep you alive. You've just been tortured, and that's not the end of it; resist to the limits of your sanity, or to permanent physical damage. You'll know when you get there." And he concluded: "And pray; if you haven't been, start. We're going to get through this, and I'll see you when it's over."

How Long Have the British Isles Been Isles?

Now very long - barely 8,000 years which almost puts the Channel formation into historical times.

The maps in question feature the area we know as northwest Europe and the British Isles from 18,000 to 5,000 BC. At the beginning, ice sheets covered the latter (especially Scotland). But the whole was one big land mass, because so much water was bound up in the ice that there was no English Channel, and the North Sea was a narrow finger of the ocean. It wasn't until 6,500 BC that the British Isles became "isles," when the waters rose significantly and separated them from the rest of Europe.

14 So the getting locked in thing brings back memories. When I finally had gotten my own lab, I was so excited to get in it that I showed up late on Friday to just have the fun of walking around the gleaming renovated space. There was a big open lab and a couple of small offices inside it (not accessible to the hallway). So I sit down in my new office at my brand new desk to savor the moment. Then I get up to leave and realize I'm locked in. (They'd installed the locks backwards or something.) And there's no phone. Or computer. Or cell phone. (Besides, it was in the sub-basement, so no reception.) And it's past regular work hours so there's no one around. I had to pound on the walls for about half an hour until a janitor finally heard me and peered through the windows into the lab and spotted my face in the window to my interior office door.

32 There are differing definitions of "active duty." I think gold dust of the National Guard, and would not say a thing against them, but if you're a Guard member and not deployed and devoting your time to Olympic training, you're not on active duty.

There is a program called World Class Athlete, in which a full time serving member may take one (1) year to train for an Olympic or World Cup event. As you read, none of these Guardsmen are in that program.

First and foremost, this link is to his family's memorial website, not the ONT. While, I'm sure, it would be a comfort for them to know how many people knew Joffen, they would likely misunderstand "Horde", "Morons", and -- especially in juxtaposition with the actor deal -- "Ace of Spades". I would recommend just "knew him from the internet", and that's how I'll do it, myself. It would probably be best if they not find their way here. Second, as you read the obituary, you will probably notice a glaring omission.....and it would be very unfortunate if it were referenced by anyone from here. These people have suffered a terrible, heartwrenching loss -- let us not add to their pain. Third, there is some standard "in lieu of.....donations" language. There are some minor technical issues with the way the family describes the process, which I'll discuss in another comment....but to start with, the "Contribute" in the toolbar and the "Make a donation" button at the bottom are for the website, not the family or daughter, and should not be used unless you have some great fondness for Canadian memorial websites.

This is because the Olympics are the only major sporting event where the majority of viewers are women. Plus NBC is horrible, they show the same damn events throughout the night, while not showing others. Also the replay feature online doesn't allow for fast forwarding.

81 Watched several hours of the Olympics this afternoon between naps. I have somewhat of an ace up my sleeve though. I live in the northern suburbs of Detroit and we can have the local Windsor, Canada TV station on our cable or over the air. They are obviously biased toward Canadian participants but more coverage, somewhat fewer commercials and I didn't hear any political crap all afternoon.

84 Oh, man, Jinx - I'm glad you're ok. We had an oil heater fill our house with smoke when we lived in Waltham, MA. Apparently the oil company and/or landlord who had some sort of kickback arrangement were unhappy with the fact we ordered from a different company. They gained access to our basement and tampered with the heater so that the oil mist was too rich and the thing would not ignite properly.

95 House is fine, except the brickwork at the top of the chimney is black from the smoke. I am not using the stove tonight so that I will be alert and awake to monitor the chimney tomorrow. This is an old house, c. 1810, and had been abandoned since 1942 when I moved in '84. I poured new liners and they insulated the heat really well. I am still pretty shaky though. More so now , than when it was happening.

111 Maybe it would help if I liked pro sports but I find the Olympics to be tedious in the extreme. Everything notable can be edited down to about ten minutes of video. Like Usain Bolt blowing away the competition. That was impressive and made more so by knowing that any one of those guy would be regarded as remarkably fast compared to average people.

But if it took an hour of enduring endless profiles and ads to get there? No thanks. I may not have much of a life but I'm not spending it doing that.

Live Free or Die Hard was made PG-13 in theaters, and of course had the unrated dvd release. And yet if that had really been successful wouldn't you expect them to do the same thing with A Good Day to Die Hard? But the theatrical release for that was back to an R-rating.

198 Tip for travelers who smoke. If you have a layover in Detroit and want to smoke. Go to the Westin in Concourse A. It's a nice area -- there is a small eating place and bar/eat. There are various meeting and relaxing areas -- nice sofa and chairs. WiFi. It's dark, but in a good and relaxing way. Anyway, ask the hostess. But if you go to the bar, take a right in the small corridor to the elevator, go up one level, walk a short way through the Westin and you are on the street. Return the same way. When you leave, you clear security at the TSA at the hotel, which is way shorter than the general mob and they seem to be nicer. All in all I had a nice snack, a drink, and got to take a smoke break too. Security was a breeze, but it was a Sunday too.

Pleasant surprise.

268 I know a half a dozen people who, as children, had an adult parent commit suicide. Really only one of those people is in good shape today. The others have a constellation of long-term issues proximally related to their parent's death.

It is a hell of a legacy with which to visit a kid.

A few years ago, a deeply depressed friend vanished, and I was *absolutely* convinced that he had hiked off in the deep back woods and capped himself, and in all honesty, all I could think was, "Thank God he never had children," envisioning the effect it would have had upon them.

I know that clinically depressed people really are blinded by that terrible illness to where they can not rationally evaluate consequences, including what will happen to those close to them. If it were different, I have to imagine that at least some would reflect and turn back.

I was away from the ONT when Joffen stepped out. My condolences to those of you who had to endure the horrific strain of dawning realization, but were unable to do anything to change events. And of course my thoughts are with his surviving family and their hard new reality. Wouldn't wish their lot on anyone.

With the amount of scratch NBC paid to the IOC for the broadcast rights, the IOC was very happy to add another figure skating event that didn't add any more athletes to the games since the teams are made up of individuals who qualified for the Olympics.

You add in the Russian hubris, the fear of Putin, the corruption of Russia ontop of the olympic corruption, and the fact that you're turning a SUMMER resort into the Winter Olympics location and this is what you get.

Eh - I have very mixed feelings about the idea of self-censorship of any discussion of Joffen. I'm a big believer in being real which means acknowledging what you're feeling when you're feeling it and being able to talk about it.

I don't know how much his family was aware of his online activities here or if they even know of this particular website of Joffen's nick here. But whether it's discussed tonight or a month from now, it'll still be just a Google search away should they come looking for it.

And nothing I've seen here of what Joffen posted and people's interactions with him was anything to be shamed of. In fact most morons went out of their way to be friendly and encouraging to Joffen and some were probably as close to him anyone in his life. And the real pain we're experiencing from his death is a testament to this.

So I'm not a big fan of sniffling our own discussion and keeping secrets (that aren't really secrets at all) on the off chance that his family might somehow eve find their way here and possibly be hurt by what they read. Eh - I have very mixed feelings about the idea of self-censorship of any discussion of Joffen. I'm a big believer in being real which means acknowledging what you're feeling when you're feeling it and being able to talk about it.

I don't know how much his family was aware of his online activities here or if they even know of this particular website of Joffen's nick here. But whether it's discussed tonight or a month from now, it'll still be just a Google search away should they come looking for it.

And nothing I've seen here of what Joffen posted and people's interactions with him was anything to be shamed of. In fact most morons went out of their way to be friendly and encouraging to Joffen and some were probably as close to him anyone in his life. And the real pain we're experiencing from his death is a testament to this.

So I'm not a big fan of sniffling our own discussion and keeping secrets (that aren't really secrets at all) on the off chance that his family might somehow eve find their way here and possibly be hurt by what they read. I don't see this scenario happening and having a de facto blog blackout on any discussion of it is IMO unfair to the people here who are still struggling with what happened.

Based on my experiences with suicides in my own family if they come searching, it will be because they're trying to answer the usual unanswered questions of why, when, were there signs and what could have been done. Some of his comments here may fill in some the gaps and I can't recall anything that would be an embarrassment to Joffen's memory or to the morons here. Living in fear of this possibility isn't healthy either.

I think I called him while you & cth were talking to him... i talked to him until 5 AM that day. Since then, we talked on the phone a couple times a week. Sometimes, more than once each day. Yeah but I cannot believe what my sister has told me about the guy they sent. I couldn't be awake that early because I have an overnight job coming up on Monday and cannot shift schedules like I used to. (Especially with the blood pressure meds.) I'm no plumber but in this situation I'd be inclined to expect a lot of water still in the pipes. Not this guy. He ended up spilling more water on the laminate floor, that was installed just a few months ago, than was placed on the floor by the original leak.

So now the damage isn't just the area under the refrigerator but also warpage in the main traffic are of the kitchen. Just the thing for our 85 year old mother to trip on. Whether they're going to take responsibility for this remains to be seen.

You might try to work an automotive feeler gauge. maybe the .005" to start, between the stock and carrier, to see if you can find what is catching and where, and maybe disconnect the parts.

364 As I understand it, then, removing one of the pins to disconnect the U Rcv from the L Rcv does not allow the 2 to disconnect. If you remove both pins, can you slide the U Rcv forward and off the L Rcv? Also, IIRC, there's a pin involved with retaining the bolt in the carrier. You might check to see if it is sticking out and caught somewhere.

It's interesting to me how many people who are affected by clinical depression are noted for being "goofballs" and "having a great sense of humor". Most Russians had a favorable view of America until we bombed their Serbian Allies until they agreed to allow NATO to send in peace-keeping forces into Kosovo, based on claims of human rights abuses that turned out to be mostly false, with the promise that Kosovo would remain part of Serbia, would be allowed to have troops maintain border crossings, and to guard Serbian historical sights and Churches. Once NATO went in, all promises went out the window. We now recognize Kosovo as independent, Serbian troops were never allowed back in, in any capacity, and Churches are burned down and desecrated with regularity. Just recently, the Muslim controlled government that we installed banned the use of Church bells in Kosovo.... and all of this was done over the objections of Russia. Combine that with the fact that NATO has pushed to bring in all of the former Soviet Block into NATO, but when Russia showed interest in joining the party, they alone were told to pound sand. Then we start setting a missile shield that is supposed to protect Europe from Iranian missiles, but just happens to be along the boundaries of Russia. And today in Syria, we are backing Jihadist Muslims that are raping, killing, and displacing the 10% of the country that is Christian. Putin is the only leader of any major power that has shown any concern for the Christians of Syria. Putin is not a liberal democrat, but he is also not Joseph Stalin. Life under Putin in Russia is far better than it was under Yeltsin. I agree with Pat Buchannan, who considers Putin a Russian patriot. He simply wants Russia to be a strong, prosperous, and respected nation. If we would stop sticking our thumbs in Russia's eyes, they would probably stop sticking theirs in ours.
