I just exhaustedly made it back to my hotel room so I guess you know where I'm going with this excuse....

Mind the Gap: Why Income Differences Don't Matter

An absolutely excellent essay on why the left's complaints about income inequality are really based on cloudy thinking and basic fallacies and a whole lot of emoting. I'd excerpt the whole thing but laziness and fair use laws but mostly laziness prevent me.

Like chess or painting or writing novels, making money is a very specialized skill. But for some reason we treat this skill differently. No one complains when a few people surpass all the rest at playing chess or writing novels, but when a few people make more money than the rest, we get editorials saying this is wrong.

Why? The pattern of variation seems no different than for any other skill. What causes people to react so strongly when the skill is making money?

I think there are three reasons we treat making money as different: the misleading model of wealth we learn as children; the disreputable way in which, till recently, most fortunes were accumulated; and the worry that great variations in income are somehow bad for society. As far as I can tell, the first is mistaken, the second outdated, and the third empirically false. Could it be that, in a modern democracy, variation in income is actually a sign of health?

Quote of the Day: Shockingly Russians Are Interested in Russia's Interests

And will pursue them as far as they can get away with i.e. the Krauthammer explains Political Reality 101:

Remember the speech he gave at the U.N. when he started his administration? He said no nation can or should dominate another. I mean, there's not a 12-year-old in the world who believes that. And he said the alignment of nations rooted in the cleavages of the long ago Cold War make no sense in this interconnected world.

As our Secretary of State said today, or yesterday, after all this, this is a 19th century action in a 21st century world. As if what he means his actions where governments pursue expansion, territory domination, no longer exist in this century, as if that hasn't been a constant in all of human history since Hannibal.

They imagine the world as a new interconnected world where climate change is the biggest threat and they are shocked that the Russians actually are interested in territory.

No matter how '19th century' acting in your own self-interest is.

Apropos that warm water port, a liberal asked me "Why is Putin doing this?"  My response aside from the obvious "because he can," was "because he wants a warm water port."  The liberal sneered at me that this isn't the 19th century anymore.  I suspect that he hadn't read that Lurch er . . . Kerry said exactly the same thing.  Instead, this is just a default Leftist sneer.  In fact, as I noted above, a warm water port is an excellent thing for the Russians and Putin knows it.  He is therefore following State Craft Rule 101:  act in your own self-interest.  As Tom Rogan explains, no airy-fairy theory in the world will override this number one rule of governance.

10 And again, on Ukraine:

I just can't believe that the JEF and his 'handlers' let themselves(as brilliant as they imagine themselves to be), get painted into this corner.
The JEF likes to talk tough, as all he has to do is "say the words" and things happen, Although, he actually has 'not a fucking clue as to how things work'.

He releases pictures of him 'takin' it to Vlad' on the phone.
What a "Tough" president!

We have what, 35,000 - 50,000 troops in shitcanistan?
They, and their equipment can get out through Russia, or Pakistan.
(Our ally, Pakistan, nuked and sponsors of the Taliban, yeah, them).

Our astronauts on the ISS are going to get home, how?

Where do we get Titanium???

The Euronaughts are no better-off.
Well, NATO should rise-up and stop this!
It's WINTER and your GAS for heat/power/light comes from Russian gas through Ukraine.

Putin planned this very well.
When The Ukraine president ran on going with the EU, got elected, then got a better deal from Putin, the "Peasants are Revolting!", Yeah, they stink on ice...

When the 'coup' happened, Vlad felt his assets in Ukraine were at risk.
Unlike Obama, he is a nationalist and loves his country.

Vlad has ALL the cards here. Obama and the Euros painted themselves into a corner. Putin is not stupid. Obama is...
Drinking now. NYTOL...

Peace and freedom bloomed throughout the world and the libs told us t'was time to beat our swords into plowshares, but one of our admirals...damn, I wish I could remember which one...solemnly warned us not to be fooled, that the bear was still a bear.

And now, years...decades, really...later the same libs who had us beat our swords into plows are very, very surprised that the bear is acting...bearishly.

41 Last year I decided to start a company. It's been a lot of work, going in fits and starts, but I've persevered. Thing is, I didn't have all the money needed for this venture, so I've had to raise some from investors, some of whom are good friends. Tonight I executed several investment agreements, tomorrow significant sums of money will be deposited in the corporate account. It's no longer a project, an idea or a proposal. This is happening now, and I'm not only betting my family's future on success, in a very real sense I could be hazarding some extremely cherished friendships as well. This 17 second clip sums it up: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uvqJ1mTkEuY Part of me is scared to death. 90 Anyone giving odds as to whether obama new before hand and acquiesced? Posted by: yankeefifth I think that is very reasonable assumption. When the Berlin Wall was going up, Kennedy did nothing because he knew there was nothing he could do (theoretically). He "understood" what Krushchev was up against. There is nothing much we could do anyways. But Obama will fail to even have a top level NATO meeting and plan for the future. Vlad knows NATO is a hollow force without American backing and leadership. Watch them all fall all over themselves to make separate deals with the Russians in the next year.

103 30 When I was just a wee sprog, on the old Forrestal, the wall came down in Berlin to much rejoicing and drinking of Jaegermiester. It would be amusing, if it wasn't so pathetic. Posted by: GGE of the Moron Horde, NC Chapter at March 03, 2014 10:57 PM (xa1/W) I remember it well. The media/Dems called it the "peace dividend" and could not wait to spend it by gutting the defense and jacking up spending on entitlements. It took 9-11 to break us out of that thinking for 7 years, and the bear coming out of hibernation may do it again. Dear God, it feels like 1978 all over again.

Temporal incongruity anyone?  NX Enterprise is about 100 years prior to TOS, but the Empire in the Mirror universe copies Defiant and never improves on it?  When Kirk and his crew swap places with their Mirror universe twins, why its a duplicate of Enterprise.  Then there is the matter if the Empire knew such a universe existed from reading Defiant's data-banks, the UFP would have been conquered long before Kirk was born.

The part that made me want to punch the screenwriters is when Clooney's jet pack ran out of fuel. Maybe he'd have had more fuel if he hadn't been JOYRIDING IN CIRCLES AROUND THE FUCKING SPACE SHUTTLE TELLING STORIES TO MISSION CONTROL WHEN HE WAS SUPPOSED TO BE KEEPING HIS MIND ON HIS FUCKING JOB.

348 A lot of foolish and ignorant people are spewing the "sphere of influence" nonsense. In its latest American mutation, a "sphere of influence" is some exclusive geographic bubble, self-evident and obvious, and all sensible, pragmatic, better people have to do is respect "spheres of influence" and everything will flow smoothly. Only ideologues and dumbasses could violate somebody else's sphere of influence, and only total morons could deny the historical necessity of spheres of influence! In the real world, spheres of influence is a concept for promoting conflict and warfare between nations rather than preserving the peace. They are supposed to be pushed until they overlap. There is no concept of neutrality. Any nation, such as Ukraine, that seeks simply to engage in peaceable commerce under its own direction, has committed a hostile act -- a "causus belli"-- justifying and probably requiring war. And by this hostility, the competing spheres are pushed back. Preferrably, they will be pushed until the competitor ceases to exist -- its territory divided and disarmed. If we were to join the neoimperialists, and concede to Russia "her sphere", we would see Russian influence extend from the Pacific to Portugal. If it is only natural that Ukraine takes orders from Moscow, it is also natural that Poland leave NATO. If that is natural, it would also be natural for the United States to lose its airbases in Germany. If it is natural that Russia maintain a dominance in the natural gas market of Europe, it is also natural that it obtain a monopoly, and natural that its military, economic and political pressure be brought to bear to achieve this. Bear in mind, that when competing with Russia, we are bound to refuse to assist dictators who desire to slaughter useless sections of their population, or destroy disloyal ethnic communities. Russia, as it has proved with its support of Iran, Syria, and Serbia, has no such qualms. It is only natural that it will use its expanded influence and martial pride to offer its services over a wider area, especially if the American point of view is that declining to accept this patronage creates a respectable causus belli. It is foolish and ignorant for the United States to promote the worldview that created the First World War. When that view is promoted because we want an ideology that excuses our weakness, it is suicidal.

"When I use a word," Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a scornful tone, "it means just what I choose it to mean—neither more nor less." "The question is," said Alice, "whether you can make words mean so many different things." "The question is," said Humpty Dumpty, "which is to be master that's all." Alice was too much puzzled to say anything, so after a minute Humpty Dumpty began again. "They've a temper, some of them—particularly verbs, they're the proudest—adjectives you can do anything with, but not verbs—however, I can manage the whole lot! Impenetrability! That's what I say!"

399 OK, I'm going to ask a weird question, because this is the ONT.

So, I wear glasses, and I have for a long time. I have to upgrade them every few years, because age. They fiddle with their machinery, and I get my glasses, and I hand over entirely too much money. Along the way, they're testing me for eye diseases that would require me to smoke pot or something.

I think I can beat the system. I can buy, for about 1/3 of my usual glasses expenditure, a kit where you can fit lenses into a sort of frame, and sort out for yourself what glasses you need. I am encouraged in this by my searches, which turned up a post by someone like me who asked, on an ophthalmologist forum, "say, what's a good brand of these kits?" (they're called Trial Lens Sets) He got a REALLY cold response that was apparently the ophthalmologist  version of "please go have sex with a monkey right now", which gave me the idea that he was taking away their rice bowl.

So, I get this kit, I sort out my own prescription, and I order my glasses from one of the nice cheap glasses providers that are spread across the Interwebs, like Goggles4U or Eyebuydirect.

Is this insane, because I am taking a really high risk of getting those diseases that make you smoke pot, or does it seem like a good way to beat the system? If I just went to the pupil-dialators every 6 years or so, would I be sort of reasonably covered from eye disasters?

He used to run this pizza place in the university district of Seattle called the Hungry U. He was cutting this pizza and the slicer fell apart. It had fallen apart before and been repaired, so it had this hex nut on it. He could not find that hex nut, so he just served the pizza. My grandfather had one of these that he used, largely because he had astigmatism on a wandering axis (that's not supposed to happen). They are quite a pain in the neck to fiddle with, unless you're the "build a ship in a bottle" type. How much are you being charged for vision testing? You do know that you can go to an optometrist, take the recommended correction, and walk-out with it, right?

428 "401 Why the Stupid Think They're Smart --------------------- Naive you are If you believe That you are not naive" I'm not sure that I would call the present administration or liberals in general naive. I think the W Bush administration was naive for believing that Islam and democracy are anything but opposites. They believed in the goodness of human nature and ignored the poisonous culture of the M.E. Of course I agree with the Founders that peoples' natural evil must be regulated. The problem with the present administration is different. It has a virulent, deep seated intellectual arrogance that it KNOWS how the world works and how it should work. If facts prove otherwise, the facts are wrong. Round pegs WILL fit into square holes! This sort of arrogance can only be bred in the bubble of academia and incubated with untested theory. I think it is far less innocent than naive.

Probably, unless you notice something weird going on with your eyes. A walmart eye exam by an optometrist will set you back a whole $58, the last time I had it done. The scrip is good for two years. It costs a bit more if you want contacts.

Glaucoma is painless however you won't notice it til you're damn near blind. Every decision has risks.

449 I one time attended an event where the magician was Lou Zocchi. The man who invented Star Fleet Battles and the dreaded D100 among other things.

My sophmore English teacher had, while we were reading Arthurian stuff, a game where everyone got territory and could do one thing per day like fight each other invade, or what not. Not being a number person, her rules on resolution was just, each person rolls a die. Winner gets his objective and a bonus to all die rolls for the remainder of the game. Ell, my best friend and I, both being gamers and math people, immediately set about a strategy of attacking every day and accumulating the bonus. About a week in when the rest of the class caught on, we then talked the teacher into letting us bring in dice from home, to 'speed up the game' (prior to that everyone was sharing the 2d6s the teacher had brought from a yahtzee set).

I brought a d20. My friend had and therefore brought a d100. Hillarity ensued.

457 Lesson #1 of geopolitics--you cannot make another country do what you want short of waging and winning total war against them. You can cajole, bargain, or threaten--but you cannot make them do anything unless they will concede that it is in their interest to allow you yours. You may accomplish this through bargaining, deceit, or threats--but you cannot make it happen unless you crush them and impose your will upon the survivors. Putin understands this. Obama thinks this is a faculty lounge debate where the jackass who says the most impressive-sounding pseudo-Marxist thing is the winner. Rational self-interest, as nationalism or empire-building, will not be deterred by appeals to a feckless authority or fairness. Such a nation respects only power. It's why the British Empire had to smack down an unready US in 1812, and why we has to curb-stomp Japan in 1945. Power and the will to use it is what keeps others inline. The Pax Romana didn't happen because the Caesars played tiddly-winks with their adversaries, and the Pax Americana didn't occur in spite of the military-industrial complex.

I'm plenty of a committer -- but I'm a big fan of keeping it nongovernmental. And I'm especially a fan of keeping it nongovernmental when for no reason at all you could have the bureaucracy turn on you and totally ruin your life -- and that of your spouse as well. Both the BH and I have managed people, and you will inevitably encounter an employee who thinks that a valid criticism about measurable aspects of job performance is, in fact, a criminal slur regarding the little snowflake's government-protected status -- which you may not have even noticed. We've seen it happen to people around us -- pleasant folk with not a splinter of racism in their bodies -- who were cut loose by their employers and left alone to fight-off some contingency-fee lawyer who had designs on their house.

How could I expose my lady-love to the full risk of losing everything just because I didn't hit the right nuance in telling a self-important jerk how much his work output sucked? Staying unmarried meant that I could be personally ruined, but she could force the house to be sold and get half the equity out of it and her assets would never be at risk. I could hope she stayed with me while I rebuilt from nothing, but even if she didn't I wouldn't bear the shame of having ruined her, too.

There are a myriad of government clusterfarks involved with state-sanctioned marriage, and tax policy is certainly one of them. But, seriously, the one that is most frightening in the People's Republic of California is where an entire family's assets can be wiped out when one member is convicted of a thoughtcrime.

523 The whole "income inequality" thing is just such utter crap as to make one wonder at the sanity of those who promote it. The town sot that nobody would allow to starve made $0 in 1920, while a farmer made $5/day. Today, the local meth-head makes $0, while a white-collar worker might make $80,000/year. Precisely which aspect of this merits disdain?

And, yet, there is some slight core of truth....but it cuts the other way. In the private economy, vendors must delight their customers at the price point offered, lest the customer walk away.....it is only in the public economy that you can be forced to pay more for an inferior product -- and, sure enough, boondoggles are overwhelmingly associated with coercion. If there is any facet of "income inequality" that involves actual, tangible harm....it is the income inequality created and maintained through government favor.

535 I think they were unarmed cause they are massively outnumbered and didn't want to get shot. Seems like the Russians have seized their airbase, half the base already surrendered, and they were kept in their barracks or something. Don't know the full situation. They don't want to surrender, they don't want to leave, but they don't have manpower to fight back effectively. A day or two ago they were just doing their normal job when the Russians showed up. Half the base surrendered immediately. Probably much of their command structure defected. So these guys are kinda stuck there, unsure what do to. Apparently their wives have shown up at the base, begging the Russians not to kill their husbands. Some of the media obviously are also there now. Odd situation. Don't know the full facts.

Not to worry, friend. The thing is, we've made our arrangements so that we are a partnership; I would have no issues plighting our troth in any church, before any man or any God. But to go before a bureaucrat and sign up to a deal where harassment of either could ruin us both is a step too far....and such is the case here in California.

I had thought that we could make our escape, and (after the dust settled and I knew we were safe), I could make a production out of it. But she's still acting as if Silicon Valley was the Promised Land and Houston the imploding economy -- when the last stats I saw had CA with the 5th highest unemployment rate in the nation.

So now the deal is that we'll marry when it's safe to do so....which (to me) means elsewhere. It could be sooner, it could be later, and it hasn't been "never" with me for many, many years....but it's now more of a certainty.

554 Does the US or EU actually hold any cards in this situation? I was reading up on all this Russia/Ukraine business all night and see two major roadblocks to stopping Putin from doing whatever he wants... The EU is dependent on Russian NatGas and oil... The US is dependent on supply lines for our troops in AFG that go through Russian territory... We have 30 plus thousand troops in AFG still...won't this affect anything we would attempt to do to pressure Putin. It seems to me that Putin is somewhat in a no lose situation as long as he doesn't overreach and say move on Poland.... or am I reading this stuff wrong??

I'm not fixated on it being puzzling and worrisome -- I'd recognized that it was peculiar that local conditions were so problematic and figured that things would resolve into more traditional patterns as soon as we shook off the dust from this nest of vice and depravity.

And if anyone is wondering about the wishy-washy cutoff date....California has a lovely practice where you can be unemployed for six months, move to somewhere without a state income tax, and start a new job because their economy isn't stunted by California's grabby tendencies.....and end up paying California income tax on the wages you earned elsewhere as a "part-year resident". Ha ha ha, what a joke. Sacramento and the state legislature is
populated by a bunch of greedy, spendthrift assholes, put there by
clueless metro area voters.

=====they could send me a tax bill like that, but that doesn't mean they would ever get paid.
They might get a "I have no property in your state, GFY" letter, but there wouldn't be a check attached.

The more deeply you look into what the founding fathers put into the Constitution, the more awesome their accomplishment becomes. Without crap like Wickard v. Filburn, we might yet be profiting from their restraint.

578 576 So if a former CA resident were to refuse to pay tribute to the state for being a "part-year resident", how does the Franchise Tax Board plan to get their pound of flesh? Posted by: Blacque Jacques Shellacque at March 04, 2014 04:01 AM (AQTz3) Hide posts from (AQTz3)

In large part, multi-state compacts.

Posted by: cthulhu at March 04, 2014 12:06 AM (T1005)

579 Ya know, I knew there was something wrong the day I saw on my CA vehicle registration renewal form years ago that specified a "non-operation" fee. Up until that point, one just simply didn't pay the fees and parked the car in the backyard if it was broken, or for whatever other reason the car wasn't going to be driven. And now the fucking state demands that we PAY them not to operate our own damn vehicle? Right then and there is where the intense dislike I currently have for this place sprang forth from the ground and began to grow.

Posted by: Blacque Jacques Shellacque at March 04, 2014 12:11 AM (AQTz3)

580 AFAIK you don't have to register a vehicle in the backyard at all. The non-op fee lets you re-register it at a lower rate. You do it when you plan to re-activate a vehicle shortly.

581 The non-op fee lets you re-register it at a lower rate. You do it when you plan to re-activate a vehicle shortly. How it used to work was that if the car was parked for whatever length of time, no penalties at all were assessed if you signed a form declaring that it hadn't been driven since the registration expired and if the plate numbers didn't show up on any moving violations or parking tickets.

How quickly regulation morphs into extortion.....

Posted by: cthulhu at March 04, 2014 12:28 AM (T1005)

584 That non-op fee is all bullshit anyway. It's not like a substantial amount of paperwork or intense human labor is involved to reactivate the record, since it's all electronic to begin with, and doesn't get deleted when the registration expires. It's just another Sacramento's money-collecting nickel-and-dime the public to death schemes.

591 Morning, Horde. I'm giving style points to Putin. He's giving a press conference now, CNN is covering it live. Russian format seems to be that each reporter asks a question, Vlad writes them down on a yellow pad, then delivers his response. Now, yes, he's a tyrant and a vicious crapweasel and his statements are disingenuous. The style is that he's seated in a chair on the floor in a sparely appointed room, on the same level as the reporters. There was no bustle, no pomp, no projection of majesty. He's a guy in a room talking to people. Feels like we've forgotten something over the last 225 years.

593 "Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen." It tries to express the inexpressible –– the nature of God –– and so it uses words like this: "In light inaccessible hid from our eyes" –– that are mysterious as well as beautiful. "Light inaccessible" –– why would anyone refer to God as "light inaccessible"? The scriptures, particularly the Psalms, speak of God as light: "God is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear" (Psalm 27:1). "Let the light of your face shine upon us, O Lord" (Psalm 4:6). But why "light inaccessible"? Perhaps because, if the light of God were to shine upon us full force, it would consume us. Perhaps because we could not stand to see the full glory of God until we see him face to face in heaven. There are other interesting phrases –– "silent as light." I think of light as bright or dim or as expressing a particular color, but I had never thought of it as silent –– but, of course, light is silent. This hymn speaks of God as "Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light." How can God be unresting and unhasting on the one hand, but silent on the other? That line reminds us that God is always at work in our lives –– always –– but that God's presence in our lives is often so subtle that we can fail to perceive it. If you would like to do a thoughtful, quiet meditation, sit quietly for a half hour reading the words of this hymn. Richard Neill Donovan I like it because I think sometimes in the church we have lost this concept of the majestic, "holy other" nature of God. While its true that for Christians we certainly do have a friend in Jesus, God is holy and awesome. That is why Moses has to take off his shoes to approach God. A modern approach to this (in a small way) is the powerful light which consumes the Nazi villains who want to use the Ark of the Covenant and the power of God for their own evil purposes in "Raiders Of The Lost Ark" A majestic version of the hymn from a church in Florida: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JNPq2IhSDp8

595 Sorry; The beginning part of what I had wanted to share go cut off. It was this: This hymn. "Immortal, Invisible, God only Wise" was written by Walter Chalmers Smith, a pastor of the Free Church of Scotland, in the late 19th century. It is based on 1 Timothy 1:17 which is the sentence quoted at the beginning of the previous post.

596 Good morning, Fenelon Spoke. I think we are the only ones up. I woke up in pain, as usual, but my neck has been acting up for two weeks. I hate it when it wakes me up.

Our power was off for 36 hours so late at reading this. It isn't that the first black pResident is a dumbass. Rather, he is an evil islamo-communist who hates America, and does the bidding of those way more powerful and rich above him. And you better bet your ass they HATE America.

600 Communism is organized crime on an international bases.  Russia figures they have Europe by the short hairs, but only if they keep control of Europe's energy, natural gas and oil. There they have the help of Obama's efforts to kill oil, gas, and coal production here in the western hemisphere.  Since the "Promise Land" came with gas and oil, time is running out for Putin. The krainians had 10 million people starved to death by Stalin.  So it's no surprise that Russians are not popular with the Ukrainians.  Putin could probably buy off the Ukranians for the 9 pipelines that go through the Ukrain, but he is not willing to share the wealth.
