8 Does anyone follow figure skating? I was just curious because a lot of the "canned" ads show the woman who got the Olympic spot, but came in 4th at the US Championships. Was there some politicking going on in her selection rather than the girl who won 3rd? I don't know, but my cynicism for that selection just says "ad revenue" rather than winner.

12 Well, when Monday comes I have to haul my Cole-boy ( The late Miss Emily's beloved Border Collie ) to the vet's clinic on Pennick road. Not looking forward to it.

Besides his being an awful car traveler- he can't sit still & sheds like crazy-- he totally freaked out last visit there. Screaming & crying & panicking. Don't know why, but he did.

18 backhoe - It's weird. Dogs differ a great deal. One of my girl friends (in a former life) had a Greyhound. Great dog, docile and funny. *Hated* going in the car. The car BTW, was a VW beetle. You had to pick the animal up and try to stuff him in the back seat. The dog would immediately stiffen all of his legs and spread them out. It was like some kind of bad comedy scene..., there was just no way to jam him into the back seat without two people doing the job.. The current critter hops in the car, settles on the seat, and just looks out the window. At the Vet's office, she hops out and trots to the door, eager to be let in.

23 Y-not? It's just a check-up and rabies shot. I tried to get them to make a housecall for it. My vet is one of the few who still does that. But for whatever reason they insisted I bring him to the clinic.

He's seven, going on eight. Once the fastest dog I've ever seen, but slowing down some. And yeah, he led me to Emily's purple, bloated corpse in 2010. Guess he did not know what to do with a dead Mommy.

Neither did I. Take it one day at a time is all I can figure.;

It's funny, the different personalities of dogs. Sasha, the rescue dog I had to give back to county animal control- because she was always tunneling under the fence and running away? Had perfect car manners. Sat like a lady in the seat and never moved.

Cole-boy can't sit still. I attribute that to Dead Miss Emily's spoiling him so rotten. She never commanded him "No!" no matter what he did. He's shocked when I give the command.

Well, I'll get him to the clinic. Despite my worries. Another thing he won't do is "come" if he gets loose. Much like my bull-headed, geeky and nerdy late wife....

================

Ha!  Great story!  Greyhounds do that when they are nervous.  They just plain balk, stiffen their legs and refuse to move even an eyelash.  Funny critters they are, and so very sweet.

Our first Greyhound loved riding in the car.  I had a Mustang at the time and it was hard getting her to fit unless the top was down.  On sunny days, she'd stand up in the backseat with her nose to the sky, loving every minute of the car riding down the highway. The best part was seeing drivers in the oncoming lane pass me by with a big smile on their faces.

Lord, I miss that dog.  The absolute sweetest thing ever, and dumb as a bag of hair.

Molly,

You should should round up a dozen of your friends and start a job shop.  Hospitals and nursing homes are always looking for nurses to fill in on the weekends.  You charge full rate plus.  Pay the nurses full rate and keep the plus.  With dozen friends it becomes your full time job at home. No more travelling and plenty of time off.

46 http://tinyurl.com/nnd9tvc Tehran (AP): The commander of Iran's Northern Navy Fleet, Admiral Afshin Rezayee Haddad, is quoted by the official IRNA news agency as saying Saturday that the Iranian naval vessels have already begun the three month mission to the Atlantic Ocean via waters near South Africa. = As this is Iran's response to the US Naval Base in Bahrain, and U.S. naval deployments near Iran's coastlines, I'd consider the ongoing threat being in a naval base installation that Iran would negotiate with a Central/South American nation like Venezuela. As for approaching US maritime waters, I'd rather the report actually stipulate exactly where the Iranian naval route will pass, and who all else passes that route regularly in commerce. And how thoroughly does our own Coast Guard and Navy patrol/secure our coastal maritime waters, given "open borders" policy? Consider also how dependent we are on electronics too easily disrupted by energy bursts. Some media stories must be taken with a grain of salt. It's expected that a nation's navy learn the terrain of the ocean floors. Just as maintaining a safe distance is expected in order to prove "mutual respect". Therein, I'd align a parallel point, that a privacy comfort zone surrounding the body be the constitutional right of "We The People" US citizenry, to be honored by the US Government (TSA, law enforcement protocol). Rather, at present, far too much tax sponsored authoritarianism and bureaucratic effort is directed against the good citizenry rather than in traditional and constitutional fulfillment of governmental purpose: DEFEND THE BORDERS, defend our lives, persons, and inner sanctity, all being equal under the Supreme Law of the Land.

60 I mentioned a while months back we've adopted an abused eighteen-month old male German Shepherd rescue pup. Well, he just turned two (or so we think, we had to make up a birthday based on the sketchy medical records we have) and he has really come in to his own lately. He's gained 20 pounds in the last four months, his hair has grown in, the parasitic infestation has been conquered, and he's been turned from a feral, neurotic, dangerous to the cat, panting, wolf-like beast into a playful (even with the cat), well mannered, leash trained house dog. Now that he's squared away, though, he's really feeling his oats athletically. Sprinting in big circles in the back yard (which is really beautiful to watch), taking over part of the couch (we gave up fighting him and just put a blanket with his name on it in his spot), and generally acting like a crazed maniac once or twice a day in between naps. This past Wednesday night, my wife and I were shooting a game of pool up in the game room, and as usual our little monster was underfoot. When he got tired of us paying attention to the game and ignoring him he jumped all the way up onto the fucking pool table. All four feet landed at once, so he could have made the jump if it had been another foot or two higher, like he's JJ Watt or something. It's really gratifying to watch him develop, and just generally to help give an animal a new lease on life.

There was some discussion about it here a few weeks  back.  If I recall, the general gist  of it was that Noah was now going to be a story of global warming, or some  other such "environmentalist whacko" topic.

Plus, it has Hermoine Granger in it, and the question was whether Russell Crowe was going to be boinking her or not.

I live on a truck route. A guy two streets over is known to trap and kill people's cats- and he is suspected of being behind dog vanishings, too. Why he's free is a mystery, but his "partner" is a disbarred lawyer, so that may have something to do with that.

In addition there are rumors one or two vans full of Mexicans cruise the county and kidnap dogs for dogfighting.

I just could not take her running away all the time. Hope she gets a good home with lots of room to roam.

Send out a few Fast Attack boats to meet the Iranian targets, and just ping 'em continuously, with absolute, full strength sonar blasts.  Continually.  From multiple bearings.

Concurrently, the skies overhead should be spiderwebbed with all manner of airborne assets.  Especially EW heavies, which would utterly deny the Iranians the benefit of any SIGINT, useful radar returns and any targeting ability.

And of course, a full Carrier Group making it's presence felt along the way.... just to send those warm n' fuzzy U.S.N. greetings.

Sadly though, 0zero is more likely to send a harbor pilot out, and welcome the Iranians into port as his honored guests.

Whereupon, he would bow down to them.

My guess is that it's a money maker for them, which they probably need given the level of intelligence of the average American. Most folks here probably dig documentaries and historical recreations, but A&E and the Cartoon Channel probably thump the History Channel in the ratings. Ancient Aliens is just what you said - entertainment - but it's well done and shows cool places and things I don't see elsewhere, so why not indulge in a little historical science fiction from time to time? I find it to be a harmless diversion between Vikings and Nazis. YMMV of course.

Posted by: Anna Puma http://www.thewilds.org/default.aspx The Wilds is 10,000 acres of strip mined land in Eastern Ohio (about 1 hour east of Columbus, Ohio) that has been reclaimed and planted with a high nutrition hybrid grass. There are a series of 500 acre paddocks that contain wildlife (endangered and otherwise) from all over the world. It is affiliated with the Columbus Zoo. It's a lot like "Jurassic Park", in that a bus carries visitors through different gates to the different paddocks. The paddock for Africa has giraffes, rhinos, gazelles... a real plethora of African Fauna. It's actually a pretty neat place to visit. The African animals are kept inside during the winter. No predators are kept there yet, but they do still have plenty of unused land to be developed.

About the only "educational" media presentations that insult intelligence and try our patience are by recent NOVA nerds and nitwits pretending to be artisans and warriors themselves re-enacting history. (Like watching someone "rediscover" the wheel.) It's frustrating when American tax-funded PBS venues like NOVA become substandard productions, for a variety of reasons. It's a sad state when scholarship and taxes produce dumb and dumber. A lot of BBC productions stay in the low budget, two scholars revisiting historical sites with two specialist guests on screen (artisan, military), illustrating events in high tech animation while narrating, recreating ancient battles to view with convincing effect.

Posted by: DangerGirl at February 08, 2014 12:33 PM (GrtrJ) Disgusting. Hijacking the Olympics. Bad form. But no surprise given Obama. Watch him push any gold medal winner from the pedestal to take the awards himself, citizen of the world.

179 And Norway takes it home. Almost a sweep. I would think cross country ski racing would be just about the most demanding winter sport of all.

180 @118 Tami That's exactly what happened. Wife is in Moscow and we just spoke about that a hour ago on the phone. A couple of days ago a German news team was interviewing russians who were thrown out of their houses and some who had the business stolen by local government officials. The most costly Olympics in history because its graft and corruption all the way down.

I don't imagine he would be there.  Too much emphasis on competition, and people having to work hard to succeed.

Plus, too many white people.

183 Are snowboarders known for their decorum in discussing opponents?

BTW, the U.S. bobsledder who had to punch his way through a (literally) cardboard bathroom door after a shower, Johnny Quinn, used to play in the CFL (as well as the NFL).

Using "snowboarders" and "decorum" in the same sentence = logic fail.

Pretty crappy description of the optical properties of calcite. It doesn't "depolarize" light, it simply separates the polar components of normal sunlight. Gypsum crystals do this, too. And many other minerals; in fact, most minerals.

185 I was at the garden thread. I have one thing to say. Mitch McConnell must be an idiot. I just received my 7th letter from him via USPS, with my notice of my 2014 support! I have thrown them all away & they still send them.

187 The Obama administration and many in the analytical community have said al QaedaÂ’s central leadership was no longer influential and that the terror group as a whole was diminishing.

After al Qaeda’s current leader Ayman al-Zawahiri released a propaganda video in January 2014 telling Syrian insurgents to ban together, the State Department said that al Zawahiri was the only al Qaeda core leader left and that he spent “more time worrying about his own personal security than propaganda.”

Hoffman disputed that notion.

“The core may not be as strong, but the al Qaeda brand I would argue is just as strong if not stronger,” Hoffman said.

While al QaedaÂ’s central leadership has suffered significant losses, al Zawahiri has still managed to maintain influence among affiliates and facilitated the expansion of the al Qaeda network, Hoffman said.

“I think he’s actually achieved the impossible, he’s held the movement together now for three years at a time that it is splintering,” he said. “Al Qaeda is in more places today than it was before al Zawahiri took control.”

188 The founder and CEO of American Title Services in Centennial was found dead in his home this week, the result of self-inflicted wounds from a nail gun, according to the Arapahoe County coroner.

Richard Talley, 57, and the company he founded in 2001 were under investigation by state insurance regulators at the time of his death late Tuesday, an agency spokesman confirmed Thursday.

It was unclear how long the investigation had been ongoing or its primary focus.

A coroner's spokeswoman Thursday said Talley was found in his garage by a family member who called authorities. They said Talley died from seven or eight self-inflicted wounds from a nail gun fired into his torso and head.

Also unclear is whether Talley's suicide was related to the investigation by the Colorado Division of Insurance, which regulates title companies.

7 or 8 self inflicted NAIL GUN wounds to the torso and head...

Obvious suicide... /eyeroll

Reminds me of that story about the KGB spy who died of 23 self-inflicted gunshot wounds to the back of the head.
