Saturday Thread for Non-Gardening Discussions [Y-not]
— Open Blogger

For those of you not interested in gardening.

Tragically, a Malaysian Airlines jet has gone missing.

Flight MH370 vanished at 18:40 GMT Friday (02:40 local time Saturday) after leaving Kuala Lumpur for Beijing, where it was expected at 22:30 GMT.

The aerial search has been halted for the night, but sea operations continue.

No wreckage has been reported by the airline, but Vietnamese planes reported seeing oil slicks in the sea.

Per my twitter feed, the flying conditions were reportedly near-perfect.

Prayers for the missing and their loved ones.

7 Drudge reports that there were two passengers aboard, each with a stolen passport.  Both passports were apparently reported stolen promptly by the victims of the thefts (at least one passport was stolen a year ago).  Which leads to the question:  Does Malaysia have access to a stolen/revoked international passport database?  Does such a database exist?

15 There originally reports of US personnel at a Thai Air base picking up a mayday signal from the down aircraft.
At first I dismissed it.
But Exercise Cobra Gold just wrapped up in February, that base is usually used by US forces for Cobra Gold, and there are probably still small numbers of our people still there.

21 Here's a funny political thing. I just got blocked on Twitter by Neal Boortz. Someone in my timeline retweeted a tweet by him opining that conservatives need to " keep their mouths shut" about gay marriage and abortion. I replied saying who cares about gay marriage, but keeping silent about murdering unborn humans was a matter of principle, and principles are important. The Republican Party was founded on the unpopular principle that it was wrong to enslave people. His response was "Murdering? You're blocked". Two things. #1, if I stuck a probe in your head and sucked out your brains, yea, that would be murder. Peter Singer aside, it's no different with a baby. #2 what kind of narcissist finds it necessary to announce "You're blocked!" on twitter? I responded to a retweet, if you don't like it, ignore it. I hate to break it to you but you're not that important. Boo hoo, I'm "blocked". My life is over. Really, I had thought better of the man based upon his radio show, he seemed more down to earth.

22 20. mrp, yes. Even if the stolen passports were scanned electronically for verification, hacking happens. And makes a customer wonder what ANY company's "award winning" claim secures.

23 The passports certainly nudge the scales.
And that may ultimately be the case.
But, I'm not ready to stamp the case "Solved" just yet.
Apparently, Bangkok is THE major center for forged passports in the entire world.
And I didn't know that till today.

27 24. I would have guessed as much. Validation? I wonder how many passports on that flight were fraudulent, not "stolen" ... I can imagine there'd be a lot of reasons someone might need to travel under assumed ID. Not always criminals or terrorists, but political refugees -- say a "real" journalist who has taboo information. Or simply a spy who knew too much. That has happened before. All the lives taken, merely collateral damage.

29 Neil Boortz is a Libertarian, is he not? I have never seen many Libertarians opposed to abortion. While some individual Libertarians might be opposed to it, , they wouldn't want to make that choice for others Therefore so he would consider "murder" an inflammatory term if he didn't think the fetus became a person until after 3 months or whatever. I'm not saying I agree with his POV at all but I understand it. I don't agree with his blocking you, however.

33 I think the De Havilland Comet was the earliest example.
Previously unknown stresses around the passenger window frames caused catastrophic failure of three of the aircraft in flight.

For awhile, no-one knew why these things were falling out of the sky in pieces. Then they realized that the sharp corners of the window frames were concentrating stress, and redesigning the widow corners solved it.

34 His response was "Murdering? You're blocked". Two things. #1, if I stuck a probe in your head and sucked out your brains, yea, that would be murder Murder implies malice. For instance, if you stuck a probe in someones head and sucked their brains out while you were under the mistaken belief that they were already dead, it wouldn't be murder. Aside from being imprecise terminology, it would be best from a political standpoint not to associate abortion with "murder"- it's the sort of language that turns people off. Demonizing women who get an abortion as murderers- no matter how wrong you think they were in doing so- is counterproductive. It's more likely to turn people against you than persuade them.

62 Neil Boortz is a Libertarian, is he not? I have never seen many Libertarians opposed to abortion.

That's because most people claiming to be Libertarians are fakes. They like some of the consequences of the notion of rights (along the lines of 'you can't judge me' or 'no one can tell me what to do') mentioned by America's Founding Fathers but have no loyalty to the basis of rights.

Namely that God created us with rights by virtue of creating us in His image. Therefore there is no right to sin (so gay 'marriage' is a non-starter) and that our rights are inherent to us at the moment our creation begins (so a child/baby/fetus' inherent right to life trumps any right of the mother short of her own life).

Posted by: Boss Moss at March 08, 2014 02:17 PM (bitz6) Most of the passengers on board were Chinese, so I don't think that's likely. I very much doubt it was shot down. The stolen passports are very suspicious, but planes can crash for all kinds of reasons. Remember that Air France crash in the Atlantic a few years ago. It was a complete mystery until the black boxes were found, and there was lots of speculation about terrorism.

Within the last couple of Months I listened to a radio show that Boortz filled in while the regular host was on vacation... Boortz was pretty adamant that so much as even mentioning gay marriage or abortion would doom any (R) candidate and taint the rest of the party. Those two topics are radioactive (to Boortz) which is what he was re-emphasizing when using the ban stick.

His alliance with  (R) has more to do with the simple fact that they are not in power right now, when they are in power he'll switch to fighting the (R) power with the (D)s, whne the (D)s are back in power, he will fight the (D) power with the (R)s....blah, blah, blah...

(L)s seem to put more effort in fighting the power than finding common ground and using the power.

#70; I once got hold of the network alarm log from that day for one of the big network providers (Verizon or Sprint, forget which), and it was spooky seeing this big burst of alarms when the towers fell for a bunch of core routers, major circuits and the like.  I used to work for what is now JP Morgan Chase, and after the first WTC attack our department manager had some big TVs installed in the NOC so we could keep an eye on the news.  Seems that Chase lost a bunch of major circuits in that attack as well, but we had no idea why because we were not monitoring the news.  It was several hours before we figured out why those links were down.  Turns out AT&T as well as some of the other IXCs had big facilities in the WTC, which were damaged in the first attack, and destroyed on 9/11.  In fact we had several big customers in the New York area that had sites down for months after 9/11 until AT&T was able to complete repairs.

97 Tje woman who went to Duke after turning down full scholarships to other schools talks about how spiritual she is and complains that she would not had had to do porn had Duke been affordable: MW: I was offered scholarships at a lot of places. I was offered full tuition at Vanderbilt, for example, and was accepted into USC, Wellesley, Barnard, Pepperdine, some others. But I visited Duke last year on Blue Devil Days [Duke's programmed weekend for admitted freshmen], and I remember walking into the Duke Chapel -- I'm a very spiritual person -- and just feeling an energy that told me, "This is the place you need to be." And I felt something in the chapel in that moment that told me that I needed to be here and go to Duke and it was something that would be an amazing experience for me. Would you still do porn if Duke cost less? MW: No. If Duke had given me sufficient financial aid, if they had given me the proper resources and made college affordable for my family, I would not have done porn. What a sad, foolish woman.

98 What I don't understand though is how they were able to use passports that had been reported as stolen.
Come on. I'm sure it's pretty easy for Asian Moslems to pass as guys named Maraldi and Weiss.

100 "I am also really into spirituality. I like astrology, Zen, all of that." ^^ Quote by the 18 year old porn star. I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

101 So it's Duke's fault that her oncologist father couldn't pay for her tuition there and she had to do porn?

No big surprise there, Vic.

Didn't his dad win a few of those too?

But what is up with Rand Paul doing robo-calls for Karl Rove?

Has Rand gone over to the dark side?

108 Cruz is leading the unscientific poll at Drudge. Rand Paul is second as I recall but a fair ways back of Cruz.
