Happy Thursday.

BIG NEWS: Priorities USA, the enormous Democratic PAC, is sitting out the midterms. Why would they do something insane like that? To save money for Clinton's run in 2016.

Cover Oregon, which might just be the worst Obamacare exchange, knocking even the Maryland and Minnesota exchanges out of the running, continues to implode. It turns out the Cover Oregon project director may have lied to her state bosses and to the federal government in order to keep the HHS grants flowing.

As far as personal brands go, Tim Tebow won the Super Bowl.

This is Ziegfeld girl Olive Thomas, dressed in a Follies salute to the seasons:

She died in 1920 after drinking – whether on purpose or by accident, no one really knows – caustic mercury bichloride.*  Her ghost is said to haunt the New Amsterdam Theater in New York.

Any thoughts about the way they made up their lips?

The style was called  both  "Cupid's-bow" and  "bee-stung," and you see it on most of the stars of the 1920s (a biography of Murray is actually subtitled The Girl With The Bee-Stung Lips).  The idea, as I understand it, was to give off an aura of pouting sexuality,  a  sort of   I'm-ready-to-play!   look.

Of course, you know  one of the reasons  why lip gloss was invented.

67 from Zoe Magid, Wellesley College Junior regarding the "Sleepwalker" -- http://tinyurl.com/kogzayj "This highly lifelike sculpture has, within just a few hours of its outdoor installation, become a source of apprehension, fear, and triggering thoughts regarding sexual assault for many members of our campus community," says the petition. "While it may appear humorous, or thought-provoking to some, it has already become a source of undue stress for many Wellesley College students, the majority of whom live, study, and work in this space." = She's so off on herself. I don't think that it's funny at an all female college to erect a life like male that illustrates being brainless, in a drunken or drugged stupor, stick the label "sleepwalker" on it to feign no sexism (where's the female counterpart sleepwalking in only her un-sexy underwear?). If a fraternity had this on its property, there'd be a sense of humor rather than vindictive derision of the male psyche as null. It's one thing to poke fun of yourself; quite another for the entire population of the opposite sex to do so. Where on earth Zoe saw reason to fear a stupified person, as if a physical threat to her person, only shows what kind of weird she comes from herself. She wants to project how strong she is for BEING female; and yet has not the intelligence or physical prowess to avoid being "taken" by a sleepwalker? Idiot.

87 The only thing that the market doesnÂ’t take care of is anti-market acts: acts that initiate physical force. ThatÂ’s why we need government: to wield retaliatory force to defend individual rights.

Radicals for capitalism would, as the Declaration of Independence says, use government only “to secure these rights”–the rights to life, liberty, property, and the pursuit of happiness. (Yes, I added “property” in there–property rights are inseparable from the other three.)

ThatÂ’s the political philosophy on which Obama is trying to hang the blame for the recent financial crisis and every other social ill. But ask yourself, are we few radical capitalists in charge? Have radical capitalists been in charge at any time in the last, oh, say 100 years?

I pick 100 years deliberately, because it was exactly 100 years ago that a gigantic anti-capitalist measure was put into effect: the Federal Reserve System. For 100 years, government, not the free market, has controlled money and banking. HowÂ’s that worked out? HowÂ’s the value of the dollar held up since 1913? Is it worth one-fiftieth of its value then or only one-one-hundredth? You be the judge. How did the dollar hold up over the 100 years before this government take-over of money and banking? It actually gained slightly in value.

93 The statement from the Wellesly college president and director of its art museum really must set off that statue's "victims" - "The very best works of art have the power to stimulate deeply personal emotions and to provoke unexpected new ideas, and this sculpture is no exception," the statement said. The sculpture "has started an impassioned conversation about art, gender, sexuality and individual experience, both on campus and on social media." Hoist, meet petard.

Posted by: DangerGirl and her Sanity Prod (tm) at February 06, 2014 07:14 AM (ELs9k) A thousand years ago when I was in the Army, the DOD issued a rule that said that civilian employees HAD to take a break at a specific time. It all stemmed from a lawsuit filed by an employee who had never taken a break (by her own choosing) and wanted back pay when she retired. She won which led to DOD civilians stopping a transaction in the middle and sitting around for 15 minutes before coming back to finish up.

98 73. Fat Freddy's Cat -- they are insane. Just look at Schrillery. Nothing delicate about how coarse, cruel and uncaring the feminazi is. From my perspective, this is all disgusting. The "art" (for dumb affekt) is dumb, at best. But the reaction from Zoe is stuck on STOOOOOPID, at best. All that tuition money bought her a dunce cap which she and her colleagues wear with pride: "In Stupid We Trust." THEY haven't a clue as to the Feminine Wisdom represented by Sophia. And where is the Good Samaritan in their midst? My first response to the picture was, "Help that poor guy in distress." Zoe responded with ungrounded fear and HATE at an image that should have evoked compassion. As if, "Abort, abort abort: how dare my insanity be challenged! Kill the statue." When Ivy League erased the classical education from their "presence" of mind and juxtaposed the curriculum of stupidity in its place, the world degenerated into our present chaos for chaos sake. There's no point to that. Zoe makes no point other than the irrational permeating all. At arms length, so long as they would not permeate the world, pity the pitiless who exist in their own self constructed box. Problem is, they do permeate and pollute the earth, holding positions of massive political (economic and ideological) power at present. And they take lives, never sacrificing their own, but stealing others' lives to assassinate on their alter of chaos.

115 DangerGirl, DO NOT falsify your timecard.

Management can write a note to the file.  It is their job to fix it - not yours.  You can be fired for timecard falsification even if management directs it.

You should also save any emails directing you to do so, if they did it in a phone call -- then document that phone call immediately in an email back to yourself.  If you have a senior manager whose is reasonable, forward them the email and ask for a quick meeting -- at that meeting tell him or her that you'll be a team player - but that HR really shouldn't be telling people to fake timecards.  You should not write the words fake and timecard in any emails - except the one to yourself.

I'm well aware that there IS income inequality but certainly nothing that any person with limited rights can object to without the hammer landing on the head. The problem to address is EQUAL RIGHTS UNDER THE LAW, constitutional rule of law. We are all equal under the law, no one is more special. These grounds are "standing" -- whether or not the SCOTUS wants to see the wart on its own nose. Equal Rights do not permit favoritism. No prejudice tolerated, pro or con. We are all equal under the law. When THAT is honored in our judicial system, that will be the day...

When our little Nightengale was in high school she wanted to get a job at the local mall after school.  Mrs. Nighthawk and I told her "you already HAVE a job- that job is to go to school, study hard, and get the best grades you can!"

She did and now, ten years later, she has a strong work ethic that is serving her well in her "real" job.

Anecdote - there was a guy in the old neighborhood who was stealing mail out of the mailboxes in the early afternoons before people would get home.

I called the USPS and they told me to call the local police because there was nothing they could do.

180 Posted by: Nighthawk at February 06, 2014 08:22 AM (OtQXp) And that's wonderful. My point remains, girls can achieve success from a variety of avenues to mature and achieve professionals. There is no single "orthodox" method that monopolizes the only way to become. My mother worked a job after hours through high school, as did her siblings. It was expected of children who grew up during the 1930s. She was a stay at home mom raising seven children. As soon as we were all in school, she divided periods of her life while we were in school. Some years she was earning her own undergraduate degree. Afterwards, she was part of the working moms who helped earn a second income, and to save for retirement. My sisters got summer jobs during high school, and weekend jobs during high school academic years. They married, raised happy families, returned to complete their degrees just as Mom did, and work still, approaching retirement. I put myself through university on scholarships and TAs, having spent my middle school and high school years preparing towards my profession. On the other hand, my friend in school pursuing the same career was earning her own way working jobs in high school to pay for her private lessons; whereas most parents paid for their children's private lessons. She was a fine individual who remained successful professionally, self made. Our daughter chose in high school to get a part-time job because she so wanted to have her own independence. Yes, I warned her she was starting work at a young age, and should concentrate on academics. Today she's an employed engineer, having graduated on her own initiative. And she's all the more grounded in life for her own enterprise and gut efforts.

Nope, if the mail box says US MAIL on it - its a Federal crime.  If its a mail slot and drops into your house, locals.  Honestly, getting their attention for small stuff is tough - they focus on mail fraud, employees going off reservation, and narcotics trafficking via the post.

182 USPS does arm some of their postmaster generals. For instance, my grandmother fell victim to a scam where she was sending money to a woman in NC (thinking she had won a car) who then forwarded it onto Haiti. Fortunately the second time she was sending an envelope full of cash, her post office asked her what she was doing(this is in a very small town). They thought it sounded suspicious, and called the Postmaster General in North Carolina and gave him the address my grandmother was sending the money to. That Postmaster General went to the address armed, and was able to recover some of the cash that the woman had on hand. At one point the FBI was involved but I don't know what ultimately happened.

You DID say Metro based.

But there's a garage on 10th St. about half a block from the Metro stop.

240 Posted by: grammie winger at February 06, 2014 08:40 AM (P6QsQ) I find it fascinating that the current idea behind the progressive left is that the free exercise of my religion (by myself!) prevents the free exercise of their religion (which is usually worshipping government.) That's not sarcasm. Go reread CBD's linked NYT editorial. That's actually what they're saying. I also think it's strange that they want desperately to consider atheism, agnosticism and humanism *not* religions. So they can be ensconced in the law.

That gets complicated.  But, I believe they do - but rarely get involved.  I recall them putting up surveillance cameras for a business that had repeated thefts (of medical samples of all things); but not sure how they handle porches.

I'd put up a game camera, and leave a box on my porch.  See which neighborhood kid I catch.

245 My question for the legal eagles.

I live out in a very rural area in which some folks  seem to mistake for a garbage dump quite often. The last time someone dumped some broken up old furniture there.

Inside an old desk, I found something very valuable during the clean up.

Now does the person who dumped it there still have any claim to the valuable part even though they committed a crime dumping it there?

246 And if I recall correctly, the First Amendment (Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof) prevents the Federal Government from establishing a "national" church

============

How do you go about starting a church anyway?

I ask because I think it would be awesome if somebody formally founded the "Church of Secular Hedonism" established on the principles of free contraceptives, abortion on demand, legalized drugs, and the "right" to "marry" whoever, or whatever, and in whichever number, you please.

Then traditional churches could sue the government on First Amendment grounds for passing a whole slew of laws "respecting the establishment of a religion".

I believe it varies.  Some places you have to post a 30d notice above a certain value.  Call your local cop's non-emergency line.

I recall them putting up surveillance cameras for a business that had repeated thefts (of medical samples of all things); but not sure how they handle porches. I'd put up a game camera, and leave a box on my porch. See which neighborhood kid I catch. Posted by: Jean at February 06, 2014 09:02 AM (4JkHl) Eh, it hasn't happened since I moved. And all they got was a set of kitchen utensils. Speaking of medical supplies, when moving the lab I had to take the $40k microscope, and an entire case of needles in my car to the new building. (surprisingly the Aveo was the only car in the lab's fleet that could hold the scope because it has a fold up back seat.) Anyway...to cut to the chase. Which do you think I was more worried about it being stolen while unloading? I don't know what the street value of almost 1000 sterile needles of various sizes is, but I'm betting it's more than an fancy (and heavy) microscope.)

=====================

Once something is purposely discarded and abandoned, it has no owner.   I mean, it's not like they dropped their wallet on the side of a road.  They dumped a piece of furniture.  It's scavenger time.

Posted by: grammie winger at February 06, 2014 05:11 AM (P6QsQ)

253 Now does the person who dumped it there still have any claim to the valuable part even though they committed a crime dumping it there? The precedent you're looking for is Finders/Keepers vs. Losers/Weepers.

Posted by: --- at February 06, 2014 05:13 AM (MMC8r)

254 @245 Finders keepers on abandoned personal property. But not lost or mislaid. The act of dumping is strong evidence of abandonment.

Posted by: Beagle at February 06, 2014 05:14 AM (sOtz/)

255 BTW, how long should I wait for a floater to go away on its own before calling an opthamologist? They never go away, though your brain starts ignoring them most of the time after awhile. If there are a bunch of them that suddenly appear at once, go to the doctor now. If just one, your call, but it is likely just part of the aging process.

256 "The precedent you're looking for is Finders/Keepers vs. Losers/Weepers."

That might be true in most states. I live in Illinois where things are not quite "right" to begin with.

Compare the value of what I found to the potential trouble, looks like the donation box is a good idea.

Winners all around.

257 Catch your breath. I've not spoken ill of your mother. See 180. The point remains that just as people are different, there are different approaches towards an archetypal goal, "success". Posted by: panzernashorn at February 06, 2014 08:52 AM (MhA4j) My mother was born in 1927 to parents that had 9 children & she was in the middle of them. Her mother was bedridden for 22 years. My mother had to take care of her younger siblings, her bedridden mother, then her older siblings kids & then two of her own families, & then two of her sisters with the same rheumotid arthritis as they got it at around age 40. My mother had two families of her own because my older brother is 10 1/2 years older than I am & one of her sisters died with a 4 year old & he came to live with us, before I was part of us. I came along & then my younger brother two years later. It depends on how your mother grew up. Mine grew up working all her life but despite all that activity, she spent the last years of her life in a nursing home with AlzheimerÂ’s. My mother was a saint, IMHO to everyone. My older brother told me she used to make four breakfasts every morning before I was born.

259 @256 Abandoned property law does not get tough until you get to intangible things like accounts or stocks and bonds. Dumping something to get rid of it is abandonment. You only have a duty to the previous owner if it is lost or mislaid.

Posted by: Beagle at February 06, 2014 05:33 AM (sOtz/)

260 My boyfriend knew a guy that bought a cat box at a yard sale. It still had the cat litter in it. When he got it home and emptied it out, he found several thousand dollars wrapped up in a plastic bag. He was contacted by the seller, wanting it back. He refused. They took him to court and they lost. So I'd say that you might be able to keep what you found in that desk. It is a bit different though, since it's something that was dumped in a public place.
