#WarOnPoorChildren
— Ace

Why hasn't this hashtag taken off?

Sowell calls the left's relentless attack on high-performing charter schools a "war on minorities." Indeed, it is. Some people in the left's coalition have more pull than others. The teachers unions have a great deal of pull; minority children, not much at all.

And so the #WarOnPoorChildren continues.

If anyone wanted to pick a time and place where the political left's avowed concern for minorities was definitively exposed as a fraud, it would be now -- and the place would be New York City, where far left Mayor Bill de Blasio has launched an attack on charter schools, cutting their funding, among other things.

These schools have given thousands of low income minority children their only shot at a decent education, which often means their only shot at a decent life. Last year 82 percent of the students at a charter school called Success Academy passed city-wide mathematics exams, compared to 30 percent of the students in the city as a whole.

Why would anybody who has any concern at all about minority young people -- or even common decency -- want to destroy what progress has already been made?

One big reason, of course, is the teachers' union, one of Mayor de Blasio's biggest supporters. But it may be more than that. For many of the true believers on the left, their ideology overrides any concern about the actual fate of flesh-and-blood human beings.

Something similar happened on the west coast last year. The American Indian Model Schools in Oakland have been ranked among the top schools in the nation, based on their students' test scores. This is, again, a special achievement for minority students who need all the help they can get.

But, last spring, the California State Board of Education announced plans to shut this school down!

Why? The excuse given was that there had been suspicious financial dealings by the former -- repeat, former -- head of the institution. If this was the real reason, then all they had to do was indict the former head and let a court decide if he was guilty or innocent.

There was no reason to make anyone else suffer, much less the students. But the education establishment's decision was to refuse to let the school open last fall. Fortunately a court stopped this hasty shut-down.

Sowell goes on to note that Obama has joined the #WarOnPoorChildren at the federal level, cutting DC's voucher program, and having the DoJ attempt to block Louisiana's attempt to expand charter schools.

8 In WA state, we voted to allow charter schools in 2012. Which in and of itself was pretty amazing, given the state voted for Obama by 15%. But 2 years later, there are exactly ZERO charter schools in the state. The people voted for it, but the Democrat run state govt has put up so many roadblocks and red tape, it might as well have been voted down.

They can't because, ironically, the poor starving American kids are too fat.  But they're fat on McDonald's food which puffs you up like a poison pup.  In all actuality, they are starved of vitamins and nutrients and love from h8rs like every Republican on the planet.  There may even be some living in your house, Marmo, since you're on this military (gasp) blog.  I'll fix this problem through the state-controlled indoctrination centers.

23 The "American Indian Model Schools," despite the title, were not populated by Indians (or native Americans). I don't know where they got the name from. It was typically "multicultural" as you might expect in Oakland. Except: It was HARDCORE academics, with military-style discipline expected from ALL students. Inner-city parents begged to have their kids let in. Why? BEST RESULTS OF ANY SCHOOL IN OAKLAND. Was the former principle skimming off funds? Maybe. Who knows? But what's that got to do with the kids in school NOW? If "a former employee stole something" is a valid criteria for closing down an institution, we as a species would revert to living in caves.

Anyway, any person bringing a child into the world in the US is just making a new slave to the State - I no longer pity any parent who intentionally makes babies without being able to afford leaving the public system. They should know better by now. The schools have been trash for decades. Soon the only people in this country holding any positions of authority in the private sector will be from private schools, home school, or the better charter schools. 71 In a little-known episode from my past life, I very briefly was a substitute teacher for second-graders. But I didn't last long. Why? Here's why: After the end of school hours, a lo of the kids had to hang around and wait for their parents to come get them or for the always-late buses to show up. So I came up with an idea: Optional and voluntary after-school funtime lessons in really interesting stuff for the kids to learn. No grades, no homework, no expectation, and extra credit: Just a educational way to pass the time if the kids wanted something fun to do while waiting. About one-third of the kids eagerly participated, usually for somewhere between 15 and 30 minutes after classes on most days. In the classroom. What did I teach them? Stuff like: - Basic electrical circuits: Each kids got a AAA battery, a couple pieces of wire and a small lightbulb. Task: Make the turn on! They loved that. And they were really learning, I could tell. - Set theory. Basic logic about "Subsets" and "supersets" and "not included" and "empty set" and so forth. More amazement and learning. - Strategy games. Taught them the rules to checkers, go, chess, that African bean-moving game similar to backgammon whose name eludes me, and more. Minds growing! - Ecosystems. Explaining how everything eats everything else and what a predator is and a herbivore and a scavenger and a parasite and so on. I could see I had just created several young biologists. Etc. Etc. And them...the administration found out. I was summarily fired. Why? FOR TEACHING STUFF NOT IN THE CURRICULUM WITHOUT PERMISSION. Even though the curriculum was moronic and atrocious. I never went back to teaching after that. Ever.

81 Yeah, like non-poor kids will have it any better. We had a common core flunky come to the university's math department. There were a lot of people in the room but mostly from the math ed side of the department. Notably, all of the Asian faculty were missing even though they had kids in school. The flunky started filibustering and wouldn't let a word in edgewise, except from the sycophantic lecturer whose only job is to teach the pre-remedial course that the students can't even get college credit for. In several faculty meetings, most of the faculty expressed the belief that she was unqualified to teach anything higher and that she made several (somewhat pedantic) mistakes when observed. Well, this flunky kept talking about one thing -- College Algebra. We've got to get these kids ready for College Algebra. (1) College Algebra isn't. It's what you were supposed to have mastered in 10th-11th grade. It's not considered a remedial course, but it should be. Even after you pass it, you're still not ready for calculus. (2) Calculus is what they should be ready for. Not one word about calculus. Instead the whole goal is to make everybody as dumb as people with Ed.D.s, like this flunky who is the Iowa Regents education head honcho. Because she's an expert, see? She has a degree in education, so she knows more than you professional mathematicians.

85 Here in WI we have public school open enrollment and school vouchers. Walker is trying to push more vouchers but you can guess how that is being met. He really gored them with his Act 10. The surprising thing about the vouchers, they started in Milwaukee pushed by the African American community. But, that's where their support of the GOP ends.

87 OT on teen suing her parents. Reunited A New Jersey cheerleader who sued her parents for child support has returned to their house after having her lawsuit thrown out. Rachel Canning moved out of her parent's New Jersey home but filed a lawsuit against them saying that she deserved to have her college tuition and other expenses covered. The judge denied the teen's request last week. The lawyer representing Rachel's parents held a press conference Wednesday afternoon confirming that the family has been reunited. 'My clients will be known for this for quite some time... As far as my clients are concerned it's over, it's done,' attorney Angelo Sarno said. 'Rachel's back home.'

88 I often despair of the GOP being able to get its act together on messaging. Not least when it comes to arguing against the corruption and inefficiency of unionized public schools.

Part of this is no doubt because many weak hands on the Republican side start to tremble in panic at the thought of charges that they hates them some chirruns.

After all, isn't education good? So anyone who criticizes it must be bad! By definition! H8R!

But it can be done. Here's a guy who is on message with laser focus and unafraid. With a simple understandable analogy that everyone will instantly get: what if supermarkets were run the way that public schools are run?

I think the only way you could improve on this would be with an online video animation to rope in the always growing TL;DR crowd of slow readers and nonreaders.

89 Why does no one publish pictures of these poor, starving American children? Where is this happening?

The USDA tracks "hunger" with some broad brushes.  The worst bucket to be in is called "Very low food security".  5.7% of American households fell into this bucket sometime in 2012.  Only 1.2% were households with children.

Here is the official definition of "Very low food security":  experienced reduced food intake and disrupted eating patterns at some time during the year.

Source USDA:  http://preview.tinyurl.com/cltoopg

If you eat a "less varied diet or participate in gov't food programs" you're "Low food secure".  10% of households are there in 2012.  That appears to be the bulk of the "starving" or "hungry" kids they point to when they claim 1 in 6 are "hungry".

Got that?  If you're eating just fine, but on assistance, you're "hungry".

173 163b rockmom I really would like to believe you. Sadly, I have seen nothing but hate and sneer towards minorities by Republicans. It is a shame that the party that freed the salves and fought for civil rights now views victims of Democrat oppression as the enemy. It actually breaks my heart that Republicans are based on white resentment instead of liberating fellow Americans to reach their full potential..

174 The African-American community can't seem to get away from the idea that Republican = Racist. And unfortunately, until that perception is somehow fixed, it doesn't matter what you offer. The African-American community is going to vote straight Democrat. Posted by: junior at March 12, 2014 07:39 PM (UWFpX) _________ And that's why I say fuck 'em. They voted for this mess, they get to suffer. Blacks have the highest unemployment rate and the spread between the white and black rate has grown substantially since 2008. Tell me again why I'm supposed to give a fuck or feel sorry for them? They voted 98% for Obama. They broke it, I'm sure as hell not going to lift a finger to help them fix it.

180 "The African-American community can't seem to get away from the idea that Republican = Racist."

I tend to view it a bit differently. I think AfAms are making an economically rational decision for themselves. Economically rational on a short-run time frame, by voting for a party which says Free Shit For All But Even Moar Free Shit Based On Skin Color.

(A decision which is simultaneously long-term economically irrational for them, and damaging to the rest of society, but there you have it.)

Talking about the "Hispanics are natural conservatives" business, I postulated how I would think if I had just shown up in America for the first time, and I was given this political choice:

(1) Party D will give me plenty of free shit even if I don't work, and if I do work, they promise me preferential treatment in hiring and promotion. Plus I get an excuse card for bad behavior and poor choices, simply because of my ethnicity.

versus

(2) Party R wants me to work for my living with no special treatment and no excuses.

I've said before and will continue to say that in that situation, once I got the vote, I would pull the lever for Party D till my arm fell off. It's the short-run economically rational thing for me to do.

Again, if you have enough people making what are short-run good decisions for them but long-run bad decisions for everyone, the whole society collapses. You still can't pry people off of it.

196 A popular program that allows D.C. public school students to receive tuition for private school education has had its funding cut under President Obama's 2013 budget.

The Heritage Foundation wrote on its blog yesterday that Obama has cut funding for the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program, under which some 1,600 public school students have received $8,000 each annually towards private school education. The program was created in 2004 and functioned until 2009, when Democrats in Congress threatened to cut off funding. Republicans reinstated funding for the program last year.

The scholarship program has always been something of a political football. Some local officials and national public school advocates have argued that it takes necessary funding away from public schools, while proponents, both locally and nationally, have said that it provides a vital alternative to poor families in a city with notoriously bad schools. During a hearing on the Hill last year on the program, Mayor Vince Gray came out against it while D.C. Council Chair Kwame Brown testified in favor of it.

And I will repeat the November 6, 2012 election results from DC:

Barack Obama -- 91%
Mitt Romney -- 7%

Democrats taking away the DC voucher program had apparently NO IMPACT on voting totals.

197 apparently being a real conservative means being bipartisan. puffington host:

"As both a senator and a presidential candidate Dole's positions on issues were conservative. He has always been pro-life, supported a balanced budget amendment, played a key role in enacting the Reagan tax cuts, pushed for welfare reform, opposed the Clinton health care overhaul and promoted traditional family values."

I recall Clinton giving his "with this card" speech in front of Congress at the end of 1993. I also recall Dole saying that he expected some version of what Clinton wanted would pass. I also recall Phil Graham saying 'over my dead body", which is why I wanted Graham as the Repub presidential candidate in 1996.

I also vaguely recall that the House impeachment managers wanted to bring up all of Clinton's questionable fundraising which seemed to lead to China getting a better deal on hi tech technology, but the Senate Repubs caved to the Senate Dems on that issue (tell me if I am remembering this incorrectly.)

Death to liberal websites who tell us what being a real conservative means.
