Bruce Elliott, a painter with very little talent, is cashing in on Palin's popularity by painting a crude nude of the governor. The ick factor (one of many) is that his daughter served as a model.

Nothing says Christmas to me like Home Alone. That's right Macaulay Culkin does it for me. Did I mention I'm Jewish? Chicago Tribune came out with a (lame) top 25 Christmas Movie list. Home Alone only comes in at thirteen, people obviously don't understand movie magic. Anyhoo, I have a feeling ace will be pretty pissed about me hijacking the blog to post about my love for Kevin McCallister, but that's what he gets for "traveling."

I assured him I would be covering "serious" news like the assholes in Congress giving themselves a pay raise, however I was lying. It's what girls do best. I hope he has enough val-u-rite vodka not to notice that I broke his blog. You're welcome.

California Attorney General Jerry Brown has gone back on his earlier statement that he would defend the will of the voters. He is now trying to persuade the California Supreme Court that Prop 8 is inconsistent with the California Constitution, which bans sexual orientation discrimination.

That argument worked for invalidating the traditional marriage statute which was voted on in 2000 (a statute must yield to the constitution). But Prop 8 is no mere statute, it is a constitutional amendment and thus stands on equal ground with the California Bill of Rights. People can argue about how it interacts with the earlier-enacted protections, but to say that it is impossible to amend the state constitution is, well, obviously wrong.

Prop 8 supporters are less than thrilled to have AG Brown "defending" their interests in the case and have retained super-advocate Ken Starr to make their arguments at the Court. I can say from personal experience that their case is in good hands. Dean Starr is one of the most impressive advocates I've ever had the chance to watch in action. Each word of his oral arguments is chosen with care and his written work comes from an earlier era, when gentlemen (and a few gentleladies) would come before the Bar to respectfully disagree. Seriously, his decisions as a D.C. Circuit judge, which our law student readers may have seen in their first-year case books or perhaps an Admin law class, are like stepping in the way-back machine (in a good way).

Mice may be responsible for a blaze that killed nearly 100 cats at an animal shelter near the Canadian city of Toronto, officials say.

"It's unfortunate and ironic that mice caused the fire that killed the cats," Toronto Humane Society spokesman Ian McConachie told the BBC News website.

"Unfortunately, the mice probably perished in the fire as well," he added.

So they were Hamice?

Some say Palin shouldn't get tainted by the Senate. Well, I don't think she'd get very tainted. Except to the extent she would cast a lot of conservative votes on hot-button social issues, which governors usually don't have to deal with, which is partly why governors have an easier time of winning presidential elections. But sell out? No, no way.

She's a very competitive person. The liberal media just brutalized her. Called her an idiot.

I think she wants this. I think she wants the Fuck You, Too.

Surprising this guy didn't get the memo that there was to be a whitewash.

"I'm looking at calls made and received by a number of people," [Franklin County prosecutor Ron] O'Brien said yesterday.

Jones-Kelley, a Democrat, said that no one from Barack Obama's campaign or Gov. Ted Strickland's administration instructed her to make the check of child-support, welfare and unemployment records.

"She was contacted by no one with any political requests whatsoever," said H. Ritchey Hollenbaugh, Jones-Kelley's attorney.

She and Hollenbaugh met yesterday with O'Brien and have been cooperating in the probe.

"He asked Helen to provide information with respect to certain phone numbers, which she has done," Hollenbaugh said.

O'Brien, a Republican, said he has made no decision about whether criminal charges will be filed.

State phone records obtained by The Dispatch showed that Jones-Kelley made few calls from her desk phone, and none appeared suspicious.

Officials at the Department of Job and Family Services said she did not have a state-issued cell phone or BlackBerry. She did, however, have a personal BlackBerry to which her state e-mail was synched, and she apparently used that phone for most of her calls.

Jones-Kelley hardly needed to be told by Obama to dig dirt on Joe the Plumber. I'm sure she did that all on her own. It could be interesting who she called immediately after the violation of privacy, though.

By the way: I have heard no follow-up on the records dug through at the office of the Attorney General. Did that come to some resolution I missed?

Some of these quotes minimizing Chicago corruption are jaw-dropping. Especially given the media's conniptions about the so-called "Republican Culture of Corruption." (And bear in mind -- Republicans have institutional corruption; Democrats merely have a few bad apples who strayed from the One True Faith.)

Here's David Gregory, urging us all to take chill-pill about government corruption, and stop being such babies about it:

"(A)t the heart of all politics is pay to play. Yes. There's a thin line between expectations and shakedown. But do any of us really believe that the people who raise huge sums of money for a particular political candidate aren't expecting something for their efforts? Do we really believe that a person who is vested with the power to give away a Senate seat isn't going to give it to the person who will somehow do him or her the most good?"

Challenge to lefties: Dig up an equivalent quote by Gregory "contextualizing" and minimizing, say, the Abramoff scandal, or Enron, or Mark Foley.
