1,100 Insurgents Detained in Mosul Offensive, Including Three Wanted Al Qaeda Bombers
— Ace

Al Jazeera reports:

About 1,100 people have been arrested during the first four days of an Iraqi military operation in the country's main northern city of Mosul, the defence ministry says.

Major-General Mohammed al-Askari, the ministry spokesman, said on Saturday there had been no clashes or killings during the mission, which is ongoing.

...

Al-Askari said 530 of those being held, three of them senior al-Qaeda members, were wanted by the authorities.

He said security forces had recovered 1,400kg of explosives, 45 missiles, 263 mortar bombs and 175 assorted weapons.

Iraqi leaders said many of the fighters had fled to nearby areas, where troops were hunting for them.

However, the operation is being described as successful in depriving the fighters of their urban stronghold. But the flight of al-Qaeda fighters to nearby areas raises the concern they can regroup elsewhere, as has happened in the past.

...

Major-General Mark Hertling, the senior US commander in northern Iraq, whose forces are working with the Iraqi troops in the operation, said he did not believe significant numbers of fighters had escaped.

He said Iraqi forces had surrounded the city with barriers and checkpoints controlling entry and exits.

"It's been very successful," he told the Associated Press. "I think the combination of the arrests plus the uncovering of a number of weapons caches will reduce the number of attacks in Mosul."

On Friday, al-Maliki had announced a 10-day amnesty for those surrendering weaponry, but officials said there had been no response to an offer of cash in exchange for heavy and medium weapons.

A Time piece states that the IA and US military may have hoped for an Al Qaeda Alamo, fighting to the last man in an effort to save their last urban haven, and spins it as terribly disappointing that so many fled. But it seems to me that if they were in Mosul that was their first preference -- probably easier to hide and escape combined arms attacks -- and so they've retreated to less favorable ground.

Meanwhile, an Al Qaeda sympathizer laments, by his calculations, a 94% drop in Al Qaeda operational strength.

The chart he complied tracking attacks:

Speaks for itself, even without a translation.

A Remake Of Red Dawn?
— DrewM

How many ways might this suck?

The fact that this movie ever got made in the first place with the Soviets (remember them?) as the bad guys and the Cubans as the not quite as bad guys was a miracle.

Who would Hollywood cast as the invading force that AmericanÂ’s would rise up against? The Russians? Please. Some Islamic group? First, the idea that a terror group would invade the US in a conventional attack is laughable and itÂ’s politically incorrect as all hell.

So beyond the normal ‘neo-Nazi’ or bad guys of undetermined ethnic origins, I think that just leaves China. Hey don’t laugh, one thing we learned from the original Red Dawn is that even after they get nuked, there’s still a shit load of them left.

Of course the most likely answer is after several years of an Obama utopia Bush and Cheney unleash their Halliburton and Blackwater trained forces to take over the country.

Bruce Ramsey thinks we have the memory of an Alzheimer's patient with a head injury
— Open Blog

Ace posted a few days ago a link to an op-ed that provided a pretty clear example of just how far the left-wing media is willing to go to rewrite history. Fortunately, LGF preserved the text of what was originally published, including the money quote:

What Hitler was demanding was not unreasonable. He wanted the German-speaking areas of Europe under German authority. He had just annexed Austria, which was German-speaking, without bloodshed. There were two more small pieces of Germanic territory: the free city of Danzig and the Sudetenland, a border area of what is now the Czech Republic.

Not surprisingly, a few people showed up to let him know how unreasonable his claim was. If you didn't catch the original text, I suggest popping over to read it in its entirety, so you can revel in the idiocy that has now been posted.

When I read the op-ed yesterday afternoon, the revisions were already taking place. I wish I'd saved a copy of what was posted then, since he's revised it even further. more...

A Democratic Senator We Can And Should Beat Up On
— DrewM

Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) says John McCain, with his history of military service and that of his family, might just be too darn tied to the military to be President.

This is particularly rich coming from Harkin who has a history of, um, ‘embellishing’ his own military record.

But donÂ’t question his patriotism because smearing a genuine war hero and lying about your own military record is clearly a higher form of patriotism than most people practice.

BTW- I think Harkin's actual service was noble and praiseworthy. His decision to lie about it? Not so much.

Teddy Kennedy Rushed To Hospital
— LauraW

With the symptoms of a stroke.

WASHINGTON, May 17 (Reuters) - U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy, a leading Democrat and patriarch of a prominent American political dynasty, was hospitalized in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, with symptoms of a stroke, CNN reported on Saturday.

Kennedy, 76, was taken to the hospital early in the morning, CNN said, citing an unidentified prominent state party member

The source said Kennedy was to be transferred to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

Do I have to say it?
Yeah, probably.

You guys know what kind of comments will be deleted out of hand. If you see this news as an opportunity to make creepy remarks about a sitting U.S. Senator, please don't do it on Ace's site.

UPDATE [DrewM.]

It may not have been a stroke.

A spokeswoman says Sen. Edward M. Kennedy has been hospitalized in Boston after suffering a seizure.

Stephanie Cutter says it does not appear Saturday that the Democrat had a stroke as initially suspected.

She says he is undergoing tests at Massachusetts General Hospital

How Far Is the Leftwing Media Willing to Go to Spin for Barack Hussein Obama? A Continuing Series...
— DrewM

This morning's big stink was Jamie Rubin's op-ed piece in the Washington Post saying John McCain in 2006 had advocated dealing with Hamas. This was a clear attempt to help make Barack Obama's desire to talk to every thug in the world without conditions look less insane than it is.

Well, Rubin was done in pretty quickly this morning by Ed at Hot Air and now by an extended excerpt from the interview.

Rubin had to know this would come out within hours of his piece appearing and that his credibility would take a hit. Yet he was willing to throw it away in the service of the Obamassiah.

In reality of course, he won't suffer any damage. He'll still be considered a hero by the left for giving a shot.

We should really start keeping track of the lengths the media is going to protect the Chosen One.
