Notice who was not included. Places like Fallujah in Iraq or Konar Province in Afghanistan. Nope those are Bush's wars, not America's.

Bush just got on Marine One -- wait, it's not Marine One anymore, as Maddow, Matthews, and Olbermann keep triumphantly reminding us -- and Matthews wonders gleefully how the throngs of happy people will look to Bush. Will he take it as a rebuke? One can only hope.

"He must behold the crowds with wonder and dismay," Matthews says.

The crowd is chanting "na na na na, na na na na, hey-ey-ey, goodbye." Matthews, Maddow, and Olbermann refuse to note this. They simply pretend they didn't hear the loud, raucous taunting. Because they're too classy to point this out.

We're all thrilled to see this Cowboy Imperialist Torture-Monger depart, but perhaps, in the spirit of the New Unity, we can manage to suppress our hatred to say a kind word for the departing President, and what he accomplished, and how we will miss him.

Sorry for the length...but I wrote this a couple of weeks ago, and this seems as good a place as any to post it again:

To borrow shamelessly from a great man (who, in fact, turned out to be quite wrong with this assessment): the world will little note, nor long remember, what I say here. This does not matter, for what I say needs to be said. It is, simply: thank you, President George W. Bush.

Thank you for leading our great nation for these past eight years.

Thank you for your strength in the wake of the horror of September 11th, 2001.

Thank you for having the courage to call evil by its true name.

Thank you for keeping our country safe since that horrible day; few, if any, would have believed in September 2001 that the United States would be free from attack for the next seven years, yet that is precisely what has happened.

Thank you for removing the murderous dictator Saddam Hussein from his seat of power, and, when the war in Iraq seemed to be (and, indeed, was) going poorly for our side, thank you for your resolve not to abandon the Iraqi people to despair, but rather to finish the fight; this resolve has today turned the tide and all but won the fight against those who would keep the Iraqi people under their thumbs, afraid to walk the streets.

Thank you for the amazing humanitarian work that you have done in Africa; you have, during your administration, more than doubled the amount of aid given to that continent under any previous President. Even your political rivals can find no fault with this aspect of your administration.

And, yes, speaking of those rivals...thank you for the grace, common decency, and sense of humor that you have shown under the most abominable character assassination imaginable. Thank you for being able to laugh at the fact that, yes, you do sometimes say things in a bit of a cockeyed way. (Thank you, also, for having the courtesy not to point out that most people, were they to have the vast majority of everything they say every day for eight years of their life recorded on videotape, would be rather likely to sound silly at times, as well.)

You, I'm sure, would be the first to join me in thanking God for bringing you to faith in Christ, and for allowing His love to shape your life and your interactions with others.

Most of all, though, President Bush, thank you for being willing to shoulder the burdens that come inherent in the job that you have filled these eight years, and thank you for doing so with love in your heart for all the citizens of this country. Those citizens may disagree with you in some respects, but there can be no serious question of the love you have for your country and God.
