He grills Obama on raising taxes. Obama wants to call individual mandate fines "non-taxes." Because they're just fines. Fines which are paid to the government as part of its revenue collections. That kind of fines.

Obama won't stop arguing that that's not a raised tax. Just new, additional money you in the middle (or lower) class have to pay to the government, but not a tax. Because it's "fair" and "common sense."

He also asks Obama multiple times if he will sign into law the coming (hopefully) ACORN defunding ban.

Obama votes present, multiple times, refusing to answer.

I Gotta Tell Ya... It never even occurred to me that the individual-mandate "fine" was really just a tax on the middle class, thus breaking Obama's much-repeated pledge.

Well. Yet another reason to hate the Eagles, and, if you have that bent (and I know most of you do) the Patriots.

On the other hand, the Cowboys win some goodwill... but not bloody enough.

I'll take your bet, Dave. Even if the Giants are a bunch of commies. Whoops: Got the columns backwards. The Giants are 72% non-commie. Considering where they play (the most corrupt Democratically-controlled state outside Rhode Island) they're positively arch-conservative to only toss the Dems 28% of donations.

Incidentally, no one cares about this basket-case organization, but Al Davis is as good a political theorist as he is an owner.

President Barack Obama is warning U.S. commanders that he’s “skeptical” about whether more troops will make a difference in Afghanistan, saying he’ll approve an expected request only if the forces fit into a strategy to beat back al-Qaida and protect the United States.

U.S. generals are preparing to seek as many as tens of thousands additional troops for the increasingly unpopular conflict, but in several of his five Sunday talk show interviews, Obama made clear that heÂ’s far from convinced about the need for a massive infusion of forces and wonÂ’t be rushed on the decision.

“We’re going to test whatever resources we have against our strategy, which is, if by sending young men and women into harm’s way, we are defeating al Qaeda–and that can be shown to a skeptical audience, namely me, somebody who is always asking hard questions about deploying troops— then we will do what’s required to keep the American people safe,” Obama said on ABC’s “This Week with George Stephanopoulos.”

Who could have seen that coming.

I missed his passing two days ago. New Ledger explains his influence and importance to the conservative movement and tributes he man himself.

The WSJ also notes his passing:

Perhaps the greatest gift of the gifted Irving Kristol, who died yesterday at 89, was prescience. This does not mean predicting the future. Prescience, a more useful gift, is seeing the direction in which the future is headed.

In his early years, Kristol saw that the Marxism which fascinated him and many others at mid-century had no future, and he embraced the ideals of the West, holding them tight for a lifetime. Later as a Democrat, he saw that many of the social welfare policies of the 1960s would fail, and so he undertook a long, unsparing critique of his own party's most cherished ideas. Later still, as a Republican, Kristol realized that his party's economic ideas were moribund, and he turned his energies to leading the pro-growth, "supply-side" revolution that culminated in the historic Reagan Presidency.

Irving Kristol is most often credited with leading the movement in American politics that came to be called neoconservatism...

In late July 1998, he wrote a piece for the Journal titled "Politics Reaches an Endpoint." In it he described the evolution of the Democratic Party into what it remains today. In typical fashion, Kristol made his argument by looking for a counterintuitive truth. Here, it was that George McGovern had "won" the 1972 election:

"He did not win the White House but he won the Democratic Party. Again, it was his nomination that was the crucial event, not the election. His nomination meant that the left-liberal wing of the Democratic Party had finally seized control, ousting the more 'centrist' wing that had its base mainly in the South and West. Can anyone imagine Lyndon Johnson being terribly concerned about discrimination against homosexuals in the military, fighting tooth and nail against tax cuts or vetoing legislation limiting late-term abortions?"

The Weekly Standard (edited, of course, by his son Bill) has posted a 2005 column from Kristol, defining the sub-movement he created.

Item #1: Build your own Mitsubishi Zero
This is a super detailed model from the DeAgostini model company. The gimmick is that only a few of the parts are released each week along with a magazine and you have to buy them at hobby and book shops. Each week's kit costs about $15 and it can take up to a year or more to finish it completely. Overall the kits are probably overpriced, but it's popular among a lot of hobbyists.

Also this brings back warm memories of my childhood. My father was really into model building and when I got old enough to not eat the pieces, he let me help out (kinda). Most of his models were incredibly intricate and may have been a weekly kits like this one. I remember many an evening sitting at the table with my dad trying to figure out what part to attack next with the smells of airplane glue and paints in the air. As a kid taking 6 months to build something and actually finishing it was an utterly amazing achievement. Good times, very good times. It's a shame these kind of activities seem to have faded away. I blame Al Gore.

Behind 46-0 late in the fourth quarter Monday, St. Joseph Benton High School (MO) unleashed their ultimate offensive weapon against Maryville: 5-foot-3, 110-pound running back Matt Ziesel. Ziesel, who just happened to have been born with Down syndrome, promptly took the hand-off and dashed 65 yards for a touchdown.

The touching scene was orchestrated by St. Joseph Benton coach Dan McCamy and Maryville defensive coach David McEnaney.

“I’ve got a special situation,” McCamy remembers telling Maryville freshman defensive coach David McEnaney. “I know you guys want to get a shutout. Most teams would want a shutout, but in this situation I want to know if maybe you can let one of my guys run in for a touchdown.”

“It’s just amazing how one play can mean so much to one kid and then to a team and then to a community,” McCamy said Thursday after practice. “And now it’s spread not just to the community of St. Joseph, but now it’s spread across the region. How something so simple can impact so many — to me, that’s the amazing part about it.”
