Christie Speaks at CPAC, Gets Standing Ovation
— Ace

Allah discusses this and provides links to people, like @freddoso, who were there.

Below is linked excerpts from his speech. I cannot judge if the speech is standing-o worthy because the excepts are, of course, the most basic, obvious things. Stuff like "we have to start saying what we're for, and not just what we're against." This is an obvious thought which virtually everyone says, and the only way to judge whether or not this was an effective part of the speech is to hear the details he then turned to, which the excerpts, of course, leave out.

Of course Christie also had to contrast Republican governors, such as himself, who do things, with Republican congressmen who, in his telling, only talk about doing things.

I think in another context this would be a standard piece of puffery that raises no objections, but these words from Christie provoke a certain suspicious response from many. Because many people in the conservative movement think he's throwing the rest of the party under the bus to advance himself.

Which is standard political behavior, to be sure, but I think many people are alarmed by the suggestion that the federal-level GOP ought to just roll over for Obama and Reid.

As Christie, I'm sure, would remind you, when speaking about himself, doing the right thing is not necessarily doing the popular thing, but I don't hear him defending the congressional Republicans for doing the right, if unpopular, thing.

Eh, maybe I'll listen to the whole thing when it gets released.

In the meantime, there are excerpts, and also this report on McConnell's "lukewarm" reception and his own speech.

16 I haven't seen any evidence of Christie doing the right thing anyway. Taxes aren't down, gun rights are curtailed, Republicans haven't gained in statewide office. He's like Rudy. Its all about him, not about moving the cause forward. He, like other North East RINOs, has done nothing to deepen the bench, help his party in other states (Hello Rob Astorino) and has actually hurt members of his own party.

40 The Obesity Rate for Children Has Not Plummeted Despite what the New York Times tells you. Razib Khan http://tinyurl.com/ml28rp3 So, two primary takeaways. The first concerns how the sausage is made in modern science, and the question is: Why was this even published in the first place, with all the caveats? Because a great deal of research manages to get published. Where there’s a will, there’s a way. So when you read a headline that appears too good to be true, remember: Just because it appears in a reputable journal does not mean that a study has “proved” anything. A far bigger issue is that studies like these, and the headlines that result, drive the discussion about public health and policy in this country. The media seizes on sexy results, amplifies them without due skepticism, and the public is misled. This can impact billions of dollars allocated to campaigns meant to capitalize on the supposed implications of scientific studies. It's hardly an academic footnote in this case. Commentators are already attempting to adduce the reasons for the decline in obesity in this age, pointing to the dietary changes in preschool menus, awareness campaigns, and exercise programs that specifically target tots. Let’s not congratulate these policies just yet, because the most likely upshot is that this finding won't be verified over time. In other words, it is probably a statistical fluke. I will be thrilled if studies with more methodological rigor prove me wrong.

47 Yeah, he sounds arrogant, but I still think it was a "smart" speech for him. Like I mentioned in the previous thread in ot - he has a take away from being head of the Governor's Association. He sees the broad spectrum of achievements from the governor's across the nation, and gives them just kudos. He is able to give clarity to the fact that governor's have to lead. They have no choice. Yes, he talks up himself. He's confident. He's self-serving. And, he's a natural at the podium. Complete, with the trained, odd, hand gesture that is taught to so many speakers/hopefuls. I soured on Christie as much as the next guy, but, he did pretty well, considering. Is it enough to climb back up from Sandy Schmoozing, or the Bridgegate? Dunno.

141 From CNSNews It's like the new "Dreamers" Amnesty has created some new incentives or something. --- The Department of Health and Human Services is estimating in its new budget proposal that the number of unaccompanied alien children who will be caught having illegally entered the United States will rise to 60,000 in fiscal 2014. That is up about 815 percent from the 6,560 unaccompanied alien children (UAC) who were apprehended in the U.S. only three years ago in fiscal 2011. “Since FY 2011, the annual number of arriving UAC has increased from 6,560 to an estimated 60,000 for FY 2014,” says HHS’s “Budget in Brief.” “On average between 7,000 and 8,000 children are served annually in this program,” says the fact sheet. “In Fiscal Year 2012 (October 1, 2011 – September 30, 2012), this number jumped dramatically, with a total of 13,625 children served by ORR that year. In FY2013, this overall increase continued, resulting in 24,668 UAC referrals from DHS for the 12-month reporting period.”

143 "Saying what we're for" is how we got all this chamber-of-commerce socialism.
"What we're for," or should be, is in most cases a government that wouldn't do this. Now your Republican Party can't get out of a lot of things -- Internal Improvements and The Transcontinental Railroad were in the original platform, and even though TFG can't pronounce his name, Rooooootherford Hayes began the federal involvement with school curriculum -- and that's always going to drag on them. "We're for" less waste, fraud and abuse. Meh.

But how do you positively present "what we're for" when it comes to taking money from taxpayers to pay for the inability of solar energy to support itself, for example? Once you even mention it, you're bound to spending federal money, even if you cut it back to basic research grants -- and then you're talking "cuts." So you face a future of endless expanding compromises, just what the GOP has been. If you boldly torture syntax and announce "We're for an open market in energy, where all players are free to compete," it's going to take a greenie newsanal yst five minutes to unpack that for the LIV's. It's...a cut!

So I think this approach is and always has been goofy. You have to show people why fed good-goods that they're used to are hurting them. That has never yet been a project for the GOP. And even most of us here think the only way they'll get that message is to let the good-good warehouse catch fire. "Like Rome."

My problem    stems      not from the fact    that it was just plain mean -- which it was --   but   from the fact    that Bridgegate    was       more evidence of a disturbing tred among politicians to use the powers of their office for     vindictive attacks.    Whether or not   Christie knew what was happening  (and I'm pretty damn sure he DID know, or at least had an inkling)    it speaks to the    character    of the people he has in place around him   that they would feel this was an acceptable use of the     power of the governor's office.

As long as the Republican party will re-elect people who talk conservative for a few weeks every election and govern left for the rest of the time we will continue to get more of them.

Christie sees that the Republicans have nominated John McAmnesty and Mitt Romneycare in the last two elections and believes that being a liberal, even on the biggest issues of the day, is NOT a problem in getting the Republican nomination.

I agree.  That's been evident since right  after 2010.  Way too much Tea Party celebration to suit the northeast/Rove  mentality.  This next election won't be won by appearances on media-approved events like CPAC, but in the trenches with the grassroots organizations.  CPAC is only there to try to get people  to donate to the RNC.

The RNC is dead to me.  I'll be donating to only the individuals I support.

Because it would be genius politics for a conservative political conference to NOT invite the only nationally-viable conservative political party's leader in the US Senate, leader of that party's governors, and that party's last VP nominee to speak to them for 15 minutes each.

Genius politics, I tell you.  And you wonder why some people, maybe most people, in the national Republican party generally ignore the far right wing.

Barky is the same sort of shameless liar.

Any 'good ideas' that might get passed in the House, and then by some miracle get passed in today's Senate...would be coopted by the Dems and claimed as 'theirs'.

So until we have the Senate...it would be politically foolish, unfortunately, to pass bills that would save Barky and the Dems from themselves.

No, but two parties is almost guaranteed by the Single Member District Plurality system of voting.  In parliaments with proportional representation you can get strong third parties.  Here, if you have a strong third party it knocks off the weaker of the predominant two in a couple of cycles.

Posted by: Frumious Bandersnatch at March 06, 2014 12:11 PM (A0sHn)

268 PPP's newest Arizona poll finds that John McCain is unpopular with Republicans, Democrats, and independents alike and has now become the least popular Senator in the country. Only 30% of Arizonans approve of the job McCain is doing to 54% who disapprove. There isn't much variability in his numbers by party- he's at 35/55 with Republicans, 29/53 with Democrats, and 25/55 with independents. McCain trails in hypothetical general election match ups with both 2012 nominee Richard Carmona (41/35) and former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords (42/35). He would lead though in a match up with former Governor Janet Napolitano, 44/36. This has the potential to be an interesting one in 2016. “The low opinion both Republicans and Democrats have of John McCain now means he could be vulnerable in both the primary and the general election next time around,” said Dean Debnam, President of Public Policy Polling. “George McGovern lost his Senate seat 8 years after losing his Presidential bid and McCain could suffer a similar fate.” bwbahahahahahhahahahaha

The bottom line point is -- why are we looking at Christie.

A blue state is fucked up and he won there.  Yay!!!

But he barely won the first time, and didn't increase his vote total on reelection.  So his one supposed strength is not that strong.

Not that compelling of a case.  I kind of like him, but just in general, b/c he's fat and kind of funny.  He is not the leader of the GOP nor very conservative.

Only 30% of Arizonans approve of the job McCain is doing to 54% who disapprove. There isn't much variability in his numbers by party- he's at 35/55 with Republicans, 29/53 with Democrats, and 25/55 with independents."

So in other words, he holds a consistent level of appeal that crosses the aisle?

They being WHO THEY ARE renders it impossible that they have something worthwhile to say,   because   their past      statements    have   all proven that   they only say   things they think will play well politically,  not things they actually believe   and certainly nothing they intend to follow through on.

There might be some RINOs who have earned the benefit of the doubt and get at least a cursory listen, but   McCain, Graham and Christie?    No.

what's happened to CPAC
Posted by: MWR

From CPAC's own demograpic info on their site:

CPAC participants are 48% female

65% of National CPAC registrants purchase Student Tickets placing them between the ages of 18-25

CPAC conferences principally attract registrants from within five hour drive of the host city. 71% of Washington, D.C. conference registrants are from the Northeastern U.S.

So the audience is young. female and from deep Blue Mordor.

Doesn't really reflect the Republican, let alone conservative base.

315 Hollowpoint: "They being RINOs renders it impossible that they might have something worthwhile to say in a speech?"

In a word, yes.

In more than a word, when statements don't match record, then why listen to them? Or if declarations of conservatism are betrayed by policy. They are pulling my chain; or trying to. Sorry. I'm tired of keeping candidates propped up by cherry-picking the worthwhile bits.

Let's call it the Gell-Mann of politics. A politician makes many "conservative" statements. Time passes. He then does nothing or less than nothing to advance them even to the point of damaging conservative movement. He then makes another statement perhaps of even a red meat sort. Am I supposed to feed the Amnesia and cheer for the guy?

Nope. Worthwhile speech not matched by action is useless. Worse, the speech is used as a rhetorical tool to manipulate. At the point where I feel the manipulation to be offensive (and there are certainly degrees to be considered here), I'm not bothering to pick out the wheat from the chaff. It's all chaff.

319 McCain is the least popular senator in the nation ---- The interesting thing is that he spent a new record amount on his last Senate race--over 20 million-- running as far to the right as Cruz. Az voted him in and immediately he went right back to his old positions; further Left actually. So he Arlen Spectered himself without actually switching parties. At this rate he may become a memé in American history like a muppet or a fast food commercial.
