— Ace Over at Hot Air, some are taking a second look at Rubio.
I liked his speech calling out Tom Harkin and the useful idiots on Cuba and Venezuela, but this does seem like too quick a bout of forgiveness. There might be some Cheap Date-ism going on in the party.
Meanwhile, a New Republic writer admits that Romney's much-media-derided "geopolitical foe" statement about Russia "seems exactly right."
Bonfire of the Vanities: Mead has a column up at The American Interest about how Crimea weakens Obama.
Facts destroy theory, every time.
Washington’s flat-footed, deer-in-the-headlights incomprehension about Russia’s Crimean adventure undermines President Obama’s broader credibility in a deeply damaging way. If he could be this blind and misguided about Vladimir Putin, how smart is he about the Ayatollah Khameni, a much more difficult figure to read? President Obama is about to have a difficult meeting with Prime Minister Netanyahu in which he will tell Netanyahu essentially that Israel should ground its national security policy on the wisdom of President Obama and his profound grasp of the forces of history. The effect will be somewhat undermined by President Obama’s failure to understand the most elementary things about Vladimir Putin. With Hitler-style lies blasting from the well-tuned Russia propaganda machine (attacks on ethnic Russians! mass flight of refugees! fascism!) and armed soldiers backing up thugs in Crimea and elsewhere, President Putin is not exactly looking like a partner for peace at the moment—and Obama’s decision to work with him isn’t making President Obama look like a foreign policy genius.
Prime Minister Netanyahu—and many other world leaders—will be looking at President Obama with cold and calculating eyes. They can see that he turned to Russia for help when his Syrian red line policy collapsed; they can see that he is betting heavily that Russia will help him with Iran, both in the negotiations and at the UN Security Council. They observe how Washington was flabbergasted and stunned by the events in Ukraine, and they are likely to conclude that President Obama’s Middle East policy is in much worse shape than he thinks.
Both friends and foes are also probably thinking today that President Obama is going to have less control over the future of American foreign policy than he might like.

He went on English-speaking network TV news interviews to talk about the amnesty plan, and said, "Of COURSE we are not going to give these people the vote and government benefits right away. It will be a very lengthy process."
Then with near simultaneity he went on Spanish-language Univision for an interview and said, "Of COURSE you get the vote and government benefits right away!"
This business of saying one thing in one language and then saying something quite different or utterly contradictory in another language -- and then claiming to have been mistranslated if caught at it -- is an extremely disreputable habit.
It was a favorite trick of Yasser Arafat, for example. He would give morning speeches talking to the world media in English about "a peaceful two-state solution" and then in the afternoon talk to his Palestinian audience in Arabic, swearing that the long-range goal was still to "push the Jews into the sea".

Here's my $0.02:
The GOP thinks they've been dealt a huge winning hand. They don't have to do ANYTHING because Obamacide is so bad. They're so confident of this, they've decided to focus on something their big money donors want; amnesty. They're focusing on that because hey, awesome hand, and what are the voters going to do? Vote for Democrats who also love amnesty?

No, I don't think so. There's no one with that sense of inevitability like there was with McCain and Romney. Bush is damaged goods on accoutn of his name if nothing else. The bigwigs may get behind him, but they're badly misunderstanding the feelings of teh country if they think anyone wants to vote for another member of the Bush family.

Nobody deserves to be the Repub candidate in '16 yet. Nobody has earned it. When someone shows the necessary experience, attitudes, skills and patriotism necessary, I'll be all for them. This.
With the heat of a thousand blazing suns.
That family have had two bites at the apple. Two Bushes have been President.
Neither one governed in anything like an actually conservative way. And both left such a foul taste in the mouths of the electorate that each one was succeeded by a two-term Democrat who accomplished big liberal goals. In both cases, a sketchy Democrat with baggage, who probably wouldn't have been elected save for the damage to the GOP brand each one of those Bushes accomplished.
Now the money men (fresh off their 2012 triumph with the Romneybot) are talking about this Bush crap yet _again_? I don't have enough hands to perform a facepalm of the required magnitude.

You weren't talking to me but I've decided I'm off the GOP Reservation now, for Presidential elections anyway.
FWIW, the numbers cannot work out for a GOP win without serious outreach and overhaul, and thats a decades-long prospect. So by your own question, you should seek out another solution. Either kibosh the Dems vote or find an alternate or settle for smaller fry.

I get tired of this question.
It is NOT 2016 yet. A great deal can -- and undoubtedly will -- happen before then, and it is the height of lunacy to attack yourself to one of the "likely" candidates now, unless you're nothing more than a political fanboi who wants to be sure Your Side wins the election, no matter what the cost.
If the election was today, I suspect the choice would be between Choom Boy and Choom Boy. Maybe someone will finally screw up the courage to blow the whistle on the America-hating fuck before what I fear actually plays out, but right now there's too much Poppin' Fresh-style "fairness" out there getting in the way of courage.
If we have a real election in '16, I'll look at who indicates a desire to be president, and make my choice in the primary and general elections.
But not before.

Rubio has more good qualities than bad.
Jeb may have this as well, being Barb's son, but no, thank you, Jeb. I do not want another Bush.
While I would like a President Cruz, a Trey Gowdy, a man of fire... or, maybe (jury still out on everything due to his own father) Rand Paul...I am ok with Rubio. Bite moi. I was also very ok with President Romney and do think he would have been a good leader, focused on the economy, as well as their family bringing class back to the White House vs swag. I took a lot of heat on this blog for being a Perry turned Romney girl, and too freaking bad.
I am a realist Republican. This Rino throwing crap has not worked in two elections. When the people vs the Democrats unite, they will get somewhere and maybe, in 2014, if the Senate races go red, Obamacare can be repealed. That should be the focus: the Senate and House races, not the election of 2016.
If I have to weigh the good qualities with all of the bad (Dems) then I will vote for whoever is the last man standing. It is politics, not my marriage.
That said, I will not ever vote for anyone pro-choice...that is the hill I will die on. Because pro-choice is late-term Gosnell and I want no part of infanticide.
I want the current immigration laws enforce before a similar fubar of Obamacare does the same with a new law. Senator Rubio knows this as he has heard from me. I honestly think once people go to DC they are threatened and bullied by special interest groups. I don't know, but time will tell if he flips again. He knows he has a lot to overcome from the mess he made.
Considering the fraud of Medicare and Medicaid was not attempted to be fixed first, before the vast left-wing Democrat document known as Obamacare was forced down our gullets, no, do not want a new and comprehensive immigration law from any part. Enforce the law and secure the borders first.

Democrats can get away with being publicly for a popular policy, but doing nothing to help it become law, while telegraphing to their base that they're really, secretly behind the scenes working to undermine it - see, for example, Obama opposing gay marriage in 2008 and the balance of his first term. This is a tremendous tactical advantage they have - duping the moderates and centrists while promoting far left positions on the ground.
Is it beyond the realm of possibility that Rubio is playing this game, or has been dealt this hand after actually attempting to reform immigration and being convinced that it can't work? I mean, is it at least possible that he'd be a Manchurian candidate like the Democrats have all the time, allowing the centrists/moderates/one-issue Hispanic voters to think he'll push through an immigration bill that they'd like in order to get elected (hell, Obama did as much without addressing the issue in any way until after 2010)?

Perry has been talking about Jobs and Growth, all along.
Lately, he's even been attacking Barky for "hollowing out our military".
Unlike any other possible candidate, Perry has over 12 years of executive experience and successfully encouraging Economic Development.

If there is going to be a third party alternative they better be born today. Anyone can whine and sit out elections. You see where that got us? I'd say that I was very tempted until McCain got Palin on the ticket. Very tempted and probably said it in anger, as that time I wanted (I think) Thompson then Romney---who was cheated at the last minute in Florida by Crist. Yet I voted. Honestly, this is politics. All of a sudden the new yardstick is some kind honest, forceful articulation of conservative bona fides. Not a simple appeal that would resonate with enough of the electorate to get....elected.

Rubio made great remarks on a topic that should be a regular piñata for Republicans. The fact that it is so rare as to almost warrant praise is pathetic.
He did a good job shooting fish in a barrel. He COULD do the same on immigration, but chose another path.

Besides, Senators suck as Presidents. Harding, Kennedy, Obama - need I say more? There's a reason we elect Governors and Generals often and only rarely Senators: the former have the experience, the latter do not.

Second look at Colin Powell? He was our 1996 frontrunner, so I think by the rules of GOPrimegenature he's next in line. And since he's older than Hillary, he's perfect for the GOP.

Rubio: right. Are you kidding? A lightweight twink from the start, only of note because (1) the vast desert that is political talent these days (2) the devolution of GOP types to a slightly less rank form of tokenism and racism than their opponents. Enough said.
Meade: if I could just find some essays I did when I was 25, I think they would sound just like his. That is, not wrong, per se, but so much the very essence of annoyingly obvious stuff ponderously expressed, that, well ...... anyway, why people find him interesting would baffle me, if I didn't live in a country where Obama is any sort of public figure, and the pundit class consists of complete retard libs and sub-mediocre "conservatives".

That is your opportunity to nominate a conservative who matches your ideology.
Not really, zombie.
Unless you're in one of the 'Early Primary' states...the choice has already been made for you.
I really hate the way our primaries are done.
