Due to a customer emergency tonight's ONT will be skeletal.
Apparently whether you were allowed to eat sausage during Lent was a big theological issue that led to the Reformation in Switzerland. Here's what Wikipedia says:
The Affair of the Sausages (1522) was the event that sparked the Reformation in Switzerland. Ulrich Zwingli, pastor of Grossmünster in Zurich, Switzerland, spearheaded the event by publicly speaking in favor of eating sausage during the Lenten fast. Zwingli defended this action in a sermon called Von Erkiesen und Freiheit der Speisen (Regarding the Choice and Freedom of Foods), in which he argued, from the basis of Martin Luther's doctrine of Sola Scriptura, that "Christians are free to fast or not to fast because the Bible does not prohibit the eating of meat during Lent."
So there you have it.
And it was this article that led me to look up the L'Affaire de Sausages: Repent of Lent: How Spiritual Disciplines Can Be Bad for Your Soul
[Link not necessarily an endorsement of his arguments]Accepted Wisdom on US Intelligence
Then:
U.S. intelligence told Bush that Saddam tried to buy yellowcake in Niger. Bush claiming to believe that, and repeating it to the American people, was a lie.
And now:
U.S. intelligence told Obama that Russia would not invade Ukraine. You can't blame Obama for believing U.S. intelligence.EU: 'Bankruptcy' is Out, 'Debt Adjusted' is In
Get ready for a whole lot of 'debt adjustment' since the B-word is such a harsh term.
The EU is trying to erase 'bankruptcy' from the English language and replace it with the term 'debt adjustment'.A drive by Brussels to remove the 'stigma' of going bust would include a ban on the word, which has been in use in Britain since the mid-16th Century.
It raises the bizarre prospect of businessmen who run into financial trouble having to say: 'Bad news. I've been declared debt adjusted.'
...The word bankruptcy dates back 500 years and is believed to derive from the Italian banca rotta, meaning 'broken bench', inspired by the ancient custom of breaking a money-changer's bench to signify his insolvency.
This time in Kansas City. MO. But you won't hear any protests over it because both the men involved are white and the shooter was a policeman.
The parallels to the Zimmerman defensive shooting are striking, including the fact that the attacker was unarmed, the relative positions of the attacker and the defender, the beating of the defender's head against a concrete sidewalk threatening loss of consciousness, the failure of observers to provide assistance, and the relative lack of injuries to the attacker other than the bullet wound inflicted in self-defense.
'Penicillin Girl' Genean Hixson Dies at 83
One of the first people to be saved by the new drug penicillin.
Genean Hixon was one of the first American civilians to be treated with the drug, The Denver Post reports.Hixon, born Genean Smith on March 3, 1931, was hospitalized in July 1943 with severe osteomyelitis, the paper reports -- a bone disease then-considered incurable and possibly fatal.
Her daughter, Connie Hixon Davis, told the Post that her mother spent more than four years in hospital beds in her teens but was saved by the treatment.
Hixon was subsequently known as the 'Penicillin Girl' after being treated with the drug. She reportedly received fan mail, and even a bouquet of roses from one soldier.
'Interestingly, she developed an allergy to penicillin and couldn't take it in her later years,' Hixon Davis told the paper.
Penicilin also saved my grandfather's life. In 1943 he was training to be a navigator/radio operator in the Eighth Air Force's bombing campaign over Germany but developed a severe bone infection. It was so bad that he was confined to a bed for almost 9 months and doctors were unable to even amputate a limb to save his life.
But then he was transferred to a hospital in Santa Monica where they gave him massive doses of a new drug called penicillin. It took a few months but doctors were able to slowly drive the infection out of his bones until the only bit left was in the tip of his right pinky - which they then chopped off.
Because of the partial loss of a finger and residual weakness he was ineligible to fly and later transferred to doing USO shows where he met many of the biggest celebrities of the time. Unfortunately many of his training buddies (including a lot of the men from his hometown) were lost due to the horrendous losses from bombing attacks on Germany without complete fighter coverage. He was also severely allergic to penicillin afterwards.

The late Bill Mauldin traveled right along the front lines with the "dogface" infantry in Europe, and immortalized them with the fictional Willie and Joe characters in his cartoons for _Stars and Stripes_.
In the comments he wrote for Stateside readers, trying to put across the huge difficulties and risks that Americans were enduring in combat, Mauldin said that the dogfaces hated the German 88 more than any other single weapon, and swore the damn thing could throw a shell around a corner.

Its where you presume the word "lent" has to be specifically stated to answer the question. The Bible never says you have to refrain from eating meat at ANY time, and specifically states you can eat whatever you want in the new covenant and further to be wary of special days and festivals.

I watched Iron Sky a few months ago and enjoyed it. It didn't take itself all that seriously and had fun with the idea of Nazis from the dark side of the moon who are both advanced yet clueless about modern technology. The Palin as president joke is pretty played out but there were enough pretty funny scenes in it that I could overlook that.

The only warrantless search reasonable would be search of a witnessed crime perpetrator.
Reason is that the cops are lazy (human right?) and they use the loophole and now you can drive a truck through it and they abuse it like an old donkey.
The thumb on the scale of justice should be in favor of the people and not the Government. We've seen what they do, We've seen their willingness to act lawlessly.
And don't bother trying to reason with me about it.
The cops and DA's have crossed over the line and are now act like our prison guards and that they can do anything they please.
Time to push that line back a bit and put them in their place.

Note also that the concern pushing these storylines -- Occupy brave and good, Tea Party raciss and bad -- is owned by a family who had their matriarch stand (twice) as a Republican for the United States Senate.

Advertising these days isn't about the product, its about trying to get on youtube and turn viral, so people talk about the ad. This gives the ad agency sexy cachet so they get better contracts. Does that help sales? Maybe, I dunno. I've never EVER watched an ad that made me want to buy a product. I resent attempts to manipulate me.

A topic I ponder from time to time is how much of our current situation is the consequence of Leftest steering of the electorate rather than just being the cultural path we are on.
For example, a lot of factors contributed to the creation of the sexual revolution, not the least of which is the reduction in available men changing female promiscuity during and after the war.
Reduction of men made them scarcer, so females had to bid higher.
Anti-Biotics reduced the consequences of many sexual diseases.
The invention Pill made pregnancy less of a factor in the decision to have sex.

I know most of the posters here are likely Christians... and I appreciate that. It's especially refreshing given some of the out-and-out bigots spewing all over the interwebz lately.
But... is there anyone here who, as a Christian, has another Christian friend, family member, acquaintance... who is *just convinced* that the Rapture is coming any day now? Anybody? Because I'm sorry, and maybe the "burning times" are indeed coming... but the Rapture? Really? Obama is the antichrist?????
Not that the liberal media (BIRM) helps. But I personally think Christians shoot themselves in both feet oftentimes when we make our arguments... and then top them off with "by the way, Jesus is coming back to Earth next week!" Well if that's true then, why do we even need to be involved in politics and culture to begin with????
Anyway, just had to get this off my chest. Thanks. Would love to read your responses.

I've been saying this for a very long time. Every national election, the media meddling is equivalent to a billion dollars in campaign contributions.
I cannot emphasis too strongly how influential the media empires are in our national elections. They deliberately steer votes to Democrats, and it is long past time we should have burned them down for doing it.

Yes, Christians are our own worst enemy. Personally I think the arguments they make and the position they take is ludicrous, but my crystal ball sucks, so I can't say for sure who's right about the future.
But honestly, its no more ridiculous than saying the oceans are rising 30 feet in the next century because you drive an SUV but Barack Obama caused them to recede.

Flipping though that book and laughing way too much was the drawing where Mauldin pokes fun at Patton's regulations. Two rain soaked weary soldiers in a Jeep with messy kit reading the board welcoming them to the 3rd Army Sector.

I agree, I loved those ads. They made people very curious about and like the Isuzu car, and made the word (which oddly enough people still mispronounce) familiar, and by reverse argument made the cars sound good.
Its also a good example of an ad campaign that didn't outlast its effectiveness. They stopped leaving you wishing they'd put out more.

I admit I ask this because I have a FB friend who's like this. Yet it's obvious what her real issue is, if I may play armchair psychologist: she's in her 60s, her husband was killed sometime around 1970 by cops (because he was an idiot fleeing from cops after a burglary), her only son is a hopelessly addicted "professional" poker player/gambler who's never had any real money to his name, and she's been raising this son's son (her grandson) for him now for 20 years.
I think what she really wants out of the Rapture is for God to hit the big "reset" button in the sky, because she hates her life and is convinced she's powerless to change anything. Just my two cents.

If it helps, I can prove that Obama is NOT the anti-Christ. In Revelations 13:5 it says:
"5 And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue bforty and two months."
42 months = 3-1/2 years. Obama is up to 5.
Feel better?

Working from memory here.
Mauldin wrote about watching some considerable number of American armored vehicles (six? eight?) all simultaneously trying to engage a Tiger. Can't recall if these were American tanks, or tank destroyers. The latter, if memory serves.
They fruitlessly bounced shells off the Tiger, which slowly turned its turret and destroyed each one of them in turn, killing their crews. With the infamous 88, again.
What infuriated Mauldin was higher-ups sending ordinary enlisted men, Willies and Joes, on what often amounted to suicide missions with inadequate equipment. It is reasonably to be assumed he would have been just as pissed off at the various command stupidities in the Air Force of the same era in the same theater of operations.
A subordinate officer of Patton's wrote an entire book decades after the war about how underarmored and outgunned the American tanks in Patton's Third Army were by comparison to their German adversaries. The title of the book is "Death Traps", which should give you a good idea of the regard in which he held the likes of the Sherman.

I especially love her "innocence' routine. She'll post 10 FB posts in a row calling Obama the antichrist, and stating with absolute certainty that the Rapture is coming.
Then I post that no one, not even Jesus himself knows... and she says "oh yes, well I'm just spreading the gospel. Of course I don't know" Never any acknowledgement of ever doing anything wrong or going down the wrong path as a Christian. Next day/week, another dozen posts of the same crap.

Instead of either doing something constructive like making their view known to the politicians, praying, or admitting it is truly beyond their control.
It boils down to that, it appeals to a certain mindset. And the too loosely wrapped of that mindset go more squirrelly than a squirrel loose at a revival.

Anyone who believes Jesus is returning next week doesn't believe in the Rapture as there is generally believed to be a gap in years between the two. Sure, Obama is pretty much the saddest excuse for an Antichrist ever, but the way the world fawned over him without any real reason is exactly the sort of thing a Christian would expect to see when the real thing shows up. The growing desire among nonbelievers for the Antichrist seems to me the clearest sign of his approach.
The Burning Times/Let It Burn is a separate phenomena. That mostly comes from the observation of this civilization's utterly unsustainable debt addiction. The more debt is added to the economy, the more short term growth you get in theory (with diminishing returns) and the cost of doing so goes up at least exponentially (assuming you at least pay the interest on existing debt and stop borrowing more) but we aren't even managing that. That process will end and the economy will drastically contract as a result.
Whether people will generally keep there shit together when their paper wealth vanishes is anyone's guess, I'm on the highly dubious side. Let It Burn specifically has to do the manner in which such an event will end Federal borrowing and force a reckoning (namely a balanced budget which we've been told for a decade is politically impossible).

One great, under-the-radar way I personally think conservatives can win this country back... is by trying to help improve the quality of Christian thinking in the USA.
Of course, that's a super-long-term goal and not something that can be anywhere near neatly wrapped up by 2016. I still think it's worth doing, however. Call me crazy. :-)

But he seems to have weaned himself off the "here's another GOPer who's a scumface" bit and has for at least the past month been posting mainly about Venezuela and Ukraine. Thankfully, he's actually pretty good about those topics; he's especially down on the Chavez cargo cult and leftists who make excuses for him. He admits a ruthless evil dictator is a ruthless evil dictator, whether they're on the right or left, which is refreshing to hear from a lefty these days.

Then the Soviets threw the T-34 at the Germans. And the Germans developed the Panther which was superior to the T-34. But the Germans could not accept the sloppy build standards of the Soviets, so the Panther was built like a Swiss clock. Which affected their reliability, try to replace an inner road wheel on a Panther and kept their production numbers low.
Plus the German penchant to seek improvements which frittered away more time and resources. Sure the King Tiger was scary as all get out, but it was ponderous, slow, and few in number. IIRC two M-24 Chaffee light tanks managed to kill one simply for being more nimble and quicker firing. None of their rounds penetrated the hide of the beast but induced internal damage with each hit.
And that was one reason the Sherman and T-34 beat the German tanks. There was simply tens of thousands of them versus a few hundred Panthers, Tigers, and King Tigers. At that point a T-34 engine digesting itself or a Sherman earning again its nickname Ronson does not matter.

Another aspect was that the Sherman had a hydraulic turret, whereas the German tank turrets had to be hand cranked to turn. This allowed the Shermans to get to the more vulnerable flanks and rear of the German tanks and train their guns before the Germans could react.

Still a subject of official concern.
Where I live, if you close up your house's crawl space vents, you had better have an active radon monitor with alarm, and power ventilation to exchange that air to the outside through a stack. Or else the code inspector will be very unhappy. HULK SMASH! levels of unhappy.
There is, needless to say, precisely zero radon in our soil. There are places an hour's drive from here where there is some. At levels which might hypothetically pose a human health risk, at least based on the government's very timorous guidelines. But here? None to be found.
You still have to have the alarm and the venting. Even though the thing they are supposedly "protecting" you from is absent. Because government.

If Germany had not attacked Russia, they probably could have taken Europe, settled for peace and built up, then taken Russia later, but Hitler was manipulated into Barbarossa by clever British and US Intel. Well, yes, today they do. I was more reminiscing to the last days of the McCain campaign. I was with a group in Ohio and one of the volunteers got chewed out for going 'off script' in a phone call. After clarifying that yes the rest of us understood we had to stick with the campaign approved message, I asked the guy running the show if he understood a lot of us felt that way.
He said he was agnostic and never really thought about that sort of thing...until he saw the way people treated Obama.

Oh I left out I bought only their first car and they were responsible for all costs and any car after that one. But no I didn't make them crawl under the car but made them watch if they wanted free labor. The most important part was teaching them "If you hear a new noise bring it to me" And oddly enough they hear crap I can't which has saved them money over time. Since repairs caught early tend to be cheap. One of the dorks one of them dated burnt up his engine thinking oil was self replicating. At least that is the only explanation that makes sense to me that he let it go right to failure.

If I ever get the chance to design an undergraduate university curriculum from scratch, one mandatory freshman year course will be "Magical Thinking and its Pitfalls".
Texts to include Charles Mackay's _Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds_, and yes, you spoiled self-indulgent little shits, you are being assigned the ENTIRE BOOK, and yes, this will be on the test.
Forgive my bitchiness. I have younger family members in college who whine about how their evil professor in a particular course has assigned them _five pages_ of reading. Per term.
A fucking river. Cry me one.
My suggestion to them that they are "not college material after all" has not been well received. Actually, they ARE college material. For a college system that has completely lost its collective mind and abandoned its original missions and functions.

Reality is harsh. Seriously, if she understands that his truck payment and insurance payments eat up another chunk of his pay, it's all to the better. If the concern is her marrying him, make sure she knows that when she ties the knot, she'll be on the hook for half the debt that bought her ring. Figure out their food budget as a married couple, and do a field trip to a supermarket -- noting as you do that your son will be eating 2/3 of the calories consumed.

Y'all talking about job interviews and then working on cars - my niece had a job interview today for an "environmental" job. she has a science degree and journalism double major (she likes writing but isn't what you'd consider a "journalist"). The job uses her science degree by having her go around to car dealerhsips and train on waste management (oil recycling, batteries, etc.) and measuring air quality, etc.
First thing they requested was an essay to test her writing skills. Then they asked how she felt about working in a mostly male environment. Her last job was at Ft. Bliss training rooms full of army troops about recycling and air quality, etc. So she said no prob. Then they asked her how she would feel if a head mechanic at the car dealership treated her poorly because she didn't know much about cars. Home run for my niece - between her dad and me (her aunt) she at least knows how to change the oil, and helped Dad taking out and replace the engine in her first car, so they were pretty impressed for "a girl".
Hope she gets the job. She's been substitute teaching since she moved out to CT in Feb. to be with her fiancé until the wedding in April. She is NOT into the teaching.

P.J. O'Rourke says that as an undergrad, he was a Marxist or a Maoist or anything else he had to claim in order to get laid in the context of an overwhelmingly leftist 1960s college campus environment.
Then he graduated and got a job. And that first pay stub with all of the various withholding was a sudden huge shock.
I personally back the idea of doing away with withholding, and going to lump sum.

Yes, slapweasel, I feel I have helped her a lot since she lost her mom I've been stepping up for quite a few years.
She knows how to drive a stick somewhat - she had a hard time getting the let the clutch out slowly thing.
My dad taught me how to maintain a car with the basics - change the oil by pulling the plug and taking out the filter, and pulling the plug on the radiator and numbering the tires and telling me to rotate them, etc. I know how to jump a car, and helped him replace the header gaskets. It's good to be able to at least LISTEN to your car, like someone said upthread.
I also could replace the spark plugs, if there was a need, from learning that. It's hard for little short me with the way they put the engines in the cars these days. I pretty much have to crawl right on top of the motor, thank goodness for coveralls!

EC, he's your son. You have had 19 years to teach him this stuff. If he hasn't learned it by now, you aren't going to be able to play catch-up now.
I know you have his best interests at heart, but I have followed this topic for several evenings now, and I am beginning to get a bit of a "helicopter parent" vibe. Your son is a Marine now, and a grown man. Give him advice and support, but don't try to micromanage his life, because he will only resent that.

I had the roasted Roma tomatoes last night for dinner. My older brother & I started having steaks again on Sundays, but yesterday I had to do something at 4 & didn't know how long it would take. He likes to eat earlier 5:30 or 6, I prefer to eat at 8 or 9.
I added mozzarella cheese yesterday & last week. I didn't when I made it for both of us on February 23. I like them with the cheese. I used Campari brand first two times, Sunday it was Roma tomatoes only. Posted by: Carol at March 11, 2014 02:29 AM (z4WKX) Hide posts from (z4WKX)
It's like the Pirate Code in the movies.....more like a suggestion. I'm glad you're enjoying 'em and I'm glad you're mixing 'em up.....and I'm about to give you one last thing to know about 'em.
If you've ever done backyard tomatoes, you know that they are so much more tasty than store-bought, and so much more healthy, and so much more interesting....but you also know that you wait for months and then they're all ripe at the same time and you end up giving a bunch away.
So, here's the thing -- between dehydrating and freezing; canning whole or as sauce; and roasting as an accompaniment to other dishes, you can actually use up a mega-boatload of tomatoes in productive and enjoyable ways.....just sayin'.

I just got here so I hope nobody has mentioned this yet:
if you cook the convex side of the sausage first and let the protein rich casing shrink, the sausage will be a straight tube that will allow you to turn it on four sides to brown.

That sounds interesting, I'll have to try it sometime.
My own suggestion is....if you're thinking of having pasta and meatballs, try slicing sausage so that they're "square" (the length of the slice equals the diameter of the sausage) and fryin' 'em up instead of the meatballs.

Finding the balancing-point, so as to balance your curved sausage upon the convexities' pivot point? ...is task enough. Perhaps a "place-holder" supplies stability.
Maybe I hadn't thought about a "Grill-Surface", where magic becomes plausible. ie, stability is provided on a round-and-popping object.
Indeed, the heat will shrink the convex side of the arc. Perhaps with low-enough heat, you may completely cook the sausage to completion via single-sided convection.
My greatest question? Who gives a shit.
I ask this not to be mean. I'm not looking for "reaction" because I'm All Provocative.
I cook sausage on its side. I think I'm providing comfort to not only the sausage, but to myself. It just lays there, but I'd like to think it is fairly happy. ...given sausage-feelings at any given moment.
It also helps me, because I get to cook my sausage thoroughly. If I get fancy, I can get cross-hatching on everything. I start to feel "cool", at that point. I've done my job.
Trying to "straighten out any given sausage" seems like too much of a task for me. This may be inconvenient for your given buns, but I'm not here to guarantee alluring sausage shapes.
I'm here to supply a palatable, fully-cooked sausage without all the impossible, magical fanfare.
I'm a realist, Dottie. I pioneer nothing.

I just like the slight caramelization* that takes place with browning meat, tastes better IMO, but YMMV.
*secret to better pot roast is to sear brown the sides first

It also applies to vegetables and starches.
