The Fundamental Value of the Ukraine Crisis
Here CDR Salamander lists some of the hard truths learned/relearned thus far from the Ukraine crisis.
You don't know the future: Do not think that just because you want history to leave you alone, that it will. Just because you want to be most concerned about the Pacific and Indian Ocean AOR - that doesn't mean history will let you. We need to be very careful following people who are so convinced about their ability to see the future. They can't. I can't. You can't. All you can do is maintain intellectual and operational flexibility against other nations' abilities, not their intention. Hedge, hedge, hedge.
Weakness invites aggression: Russia saw an opening to take what they have wanted since the fall of the Soviet Union; the Crimea. Ethnically and from a historical perspective, they have a leg to stand on. All they needed was for the time to be ripe. Kiev in chaos, NATO weak and thin, and the USA led by the C-team. Thinking like a Russian, I can't say I blame them. There were a few territorial loose ends from the breakup of the Soviet Union that they want to clean up. That leads to the next point ....
Hmmm: Mummified Michigan Woman Dead Since 2008 Managed to Vote in 2010 Election
Mummified remains were discovered in the Pontiac home belonging to 49-year-old Pia Farrenkopf last week, when a contractor was dispatched to the property when it went into foreclosure. The remains found in the backseat of a jeep parked in the home's garage have not been positively identified yet, but authorities believe the body belongs to Farrenkopf.
Adding more mystery to the gruesome discovery is the fact that Farrenkopf registered to vote in 2006 and even cast a vote in the 2010 elections, though authorities believe she died at some point in 2008.
The GOP really needs to step up its mostly-dead, dead-dead, and un-dead voter outreach programs.

How to Drink Champagne by Bill Murray
I learned how to drink champagne a while ago. But the way I like to drink champagne is I like to make what we call a Montana Cooler, where you buy a case of champagne and you take all the bottles out, and you take all the cardboard out, and you put a garbage bag inside of it, then you put all the bottles back in and then you cover it with ice, and then you wrap it up and you close it. And that will keep it all cold for a weekend and you can drink every single bottle. And the way I like to drink it in a big pint glass with ice. I fill it with ice and I pour the champagne in it, because champagne can never be too cold. And the problem people have with champagne is they drink it and they crash with it, because the sugar content is so high and you get really dehydrated. But if you can get the ice in it, you can drink it supremely cold and at the same time you're getting the melting ice, so it's like a hydration level, and you can stay at this great level for a whole weekend. You don't want to crash. You want to keep that buzz, that bling, that smile.
All Your Ivory Are Contraband Now
Since the 1989 Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) the import of new ivory into the US has been banned. But any existing pre-1989 ivory was legal to own and sell. Until now.
The Obama Administration has issued new administrative rules that essentially make all ivory now contraband which you cannot sell or give to others. Because unless you can absolutely prove that it's from before 1989, it's now assumed to be illegal.
A new administrative rule promulgated by the Obama Administration (1) bans all sales of ivory items that are not documented as having been imported pre-1989; (2) establishes a presumption that all ivory, anywhere, in the USA, is contraband, a presumption that can only be rebutted with comprehensive documentation; and puts the burden on the possessor of the ivory to prove his innocence, whilst relieving prosecutors of the burden of proving anyone's guilt.
Furthermore all imports are now banned CITES or not, all exports except for antiques (> 100yrs) are banned. All interstate transfers except antiques are banned and all intrastate transfers are banned unless they have a CITES certificate i.e. no more family heirlooms.
And not a single elephant will be saved by this.

Developing Nuclear Fusion in a Basement with a Reclusive Gunsmith
"The trick is-never write exposition. That's absolutely the trick. Never write it. The audience needs to understand what the story is, and if the hero understands what he or she is after then the audience will follow it. The ancient joke about exposition used to be in radio writing when they'd say, 'Come and sit down in that blue chair.' So, that to me is the paradigm of why it's an error to write exposition. Then exposition came out of television, 'I'm good, Jim, I'm good. There's no wonder why they call me the best orthopedic surgeon in town.' Right? And now the exposition has migrated or metastasized into the fucking stage direction. 'He comes into the room and you can just see he's the kind of guy who fought in the Vietnam War.' So the error of writing exposition exists absent even the most miniscule understanding of the dramatic process. You gotta take out the exposition. The audience doesn't care. How do we know they don't care? Anybody ever come into the living room and see a television drama that was halfway through? Did you have any difficulty understanding what was going on? No. The trick is to leave the exposition out and to always leave out the 'obligatory scene.' The obligatory scene is always the audition scene, so when you see the movie, not only is it the worst scene in the movie-it's also the worst acted scene in the movie. Because the star has to do their worst, most expository acting to get the job. Leave out the exposition; we want to know what's happening next. All our little friends. will say to you at one point, 'You know, we want to know more about her.' And that's when you say, 'Well, that's what you paid me for-so that you would want to know more about her.'"
[It was an odd coincidence that ace posted the interview with Mamet the same day I had this lined up. Think of the ONT as the DEW Line of the blog.]
George Zimmerman's Arsenal Revealed
- One Keltec 12-gauge shotgun
- One Walther .380 handgun with seven rounds of live ammunition in the magazine
- One Taurus 9 mm handgun with live rounds in the magazine
- One GLOCK 19 handgun with 16 live rounds
- One AR-15 semi-automatic rifle
- Dozens of rounds of ammunition
- Several gun holsters and bags
Eh - seems like just the beginnings of a diversified gun portfolio to me.

Of course, the article describing this was illustrated with one of those goddamned archival photos of a MUCH younger and MUCH smaller Trayvon Martin smiling pleasantly, instead of the big scowling tattooed grilled street brawler TM had grown into by the time he assaulted Zimmerman.

The graph is of Pension Liability as a percentage of Annual Revenues
Mass has high taxes, so the ratio won't be as bad as expected on a Liability per capita basis
NY State gets lots of revenue from NYC, but the abnormal pension liabilities are probably at the NYC employee, teacher and Transit/Bridge Authority Level --- put this graph on a combined state/municipal level, it would likely be IL / CA / CT / NY in the top 4 slots

So he wrote "Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf"?
I don't remember any exposition in that movie except for the part about Richard Burton killing their imaginary daughter and Elizabeth Taylor said, "you can't do that".
It was very confusing watching two people argue, and not having a clue why they were fighting.
Burton and Taylor in 'Taming of a Shrew' was good though. Lots of exposition in that one I think.

"A train leaves Chicago at 6:03am traveling 63 miles per hour. At the exact same time, a car leaves San Diego traveling 29 miles per hour. Across the country in Newark exactly an hour later, a Trailways bus leaves the depot going about 36 miles per hour.
Name the colors of the airplanes that just took off at the airports nearest to each traveling entity's destination."

Possums? Cute?
Yep. When I think of cute, I always immediately think of something that hisses like a broken steam valve, has a face like a cartoon skull with needle teeth, and a long bare rat tail, which eats horrible refuse no other animal will go near, and carries more pathogens than a lab at the Centers for Disease Control.
Cuuuuuute! Kawaii!!!!!!

During President O's administration, the GDP grows at an average rate of 2.5% annually, while the debt to GDP ratio grows at an average rate of 7% annually. How many years is it before the country completely collapses?"

I am slightly surprised by Colorado but then I only just moved here, and I live in the most prosperous part of it (thanks taxpayers!). Actually maybe I shouldn't be so surprised. I have noticed some government waste in the University of Colorado (and in those sainted Charter!Schools!), and I have noticed some hostility to business in the state government generally.

Art Laffer (of "Laffer Curve" fame) weighed in during the huge grinding debate about how to save the California condor from extinction.
He said simply that it should be made legal to farm the things.
After a decade of that, he went on to say, there would be enough condors that you could have restaurants serving condor cacciatore without anyone getting upset.
What drives me straight up the wall is to hear progtard self-styled environmentalists repeatedly equate unlicensed poaching of big game with licensed hunting of the same.
I want to watch for them selling expensive stuff on Craiglist, contact them, say I'll pay their asking price, then show up at their door and hit them in the head and take the goods without paying. When they scream in protest, I'll say, "This is what you said was morally equivalent when it came to hunting and poaching."

Facebook is stupid and I never signed but keep getting friends anyway asking to be friends. My son broke up with gf and it was the shot heard around the world. I asked him, "So, maybe you don't want to talk about it. And now you have to at 6am by people wondering why your "status" has changed (I got emails! This is BS!). Don't you think this is a stupid invasion of privacy?" He agrees, but I bet you he wills still post photos and crap. I read of people being depressed by Facebook as, like this military blog, people, uh, do not always represent themselves (not that I am not a former supermodel and/or of royal blood!).

It's especially weird about Lorre because you'd think he would have learned something about not being a Hollywood dickhead. He's described numerous times in his writings and interviews what screwed up, arrogant, antisocial crazies most of the women he worked for on various sitcoms in the 1990s were. He was unceremoniously fired from no less than *three* hit sitcoms, no less: "Roseanne" (where he was fired by Barr), "Grace Under Fire" (where he was fired by Brett Butler), and Cybill (where he was fired by-- you guessed it-- Cybill Shepherd herself).

This is true. I was told this by a Serbian friend who was there.
Midge Ure and Ultravox had passed the scene already by the time I showed (back) up in the UK (late 1980s), but the music press still remembered them and dropped their names a lot.

I can accept that a lot of creative people whose work I enjoy are not going to share my political beliefs. That doesn't means they need to go out of their way to make me want to avoid their work in the future. I guess Chuck has gotten so absurdly wealthy he just doesn't care anymore.
About twenty years ago I was at my older sister's house and met a couple who were in her social circle at the time. I cannot remember why but something about Barbra Streisand came up and they said they were unfamiliar with the movie because they wouldn't contribute tot he success of anything with her in it. At the time I couldn't understand this attitude.
Today I understand it perfectly and feel the same about a lot of people in various creative fields. They may not personally want to see me dead but they give a lot of money to those who do.

The mystery of the airliner isn't that it's known to have sunk and can't be found in a particular area, it's that it increasingly looks more sinister and results in a massive number of possibilities as to where it might be located.

This is absolutely correct, but it will take time to herd the cats into some semblance of order. I'm heartened by the number of stunned politicians that just can't fathom the fact that Americans will simply ignore laws they consider to be unjust, and the number of Americans who are doing just that. I'm hoping that these politicians are smart enough to see the handwriting on the wall and realize that "don't want to" =/= "won't" before this matter gets out of hand and we'll be lucky to live through it.

I lived in Duluth MN when the Edmund Fitzgerald left port. I saw Gordon Lightfoot do that song right after it came out on LP.
There wasn't a dry eye in the house at the end of the song. It's very haunting. I have never been out on Gitchigoomee on a boat - that lake is huge and scares the crap out of me.
I have sat up on the cliffs in the spring time and watched the wind push the huge ice floes up onto the cliffs. It's very exhilarating thing to see, but that lake can show you Nature.

Apostle Islands are beautiful I've heard. Like I said, I've never boated on the Big Lake. Never had a big enough boat handy when I had the urge! Good fishing I've heard on Apostle Islands.
I have done smelt runs on the shore. That's some tasty fish if fresh.
Tammy al-Thor - that lake they showed the ice taking over the shore was also in MN, another town I used to visit. When the ice comes off, it sometimes comes off in very weird ways.
When I still lived in MN, we used to go to the lakes and listen to the freezes. It almost sound like those whale calls you hear. Very high pitched eerie sounds. You catch that when the Northern Lights are going strong, and you would think the aliens are coming.

His best friend had gone into the lodge with a lake boat captain, and the old man was sure he could fix me up as a summer cabin boy. I shook my head at the notion; I had never had any interest in the laker life. Years later it dawned on me, that was something my dad would have liked to run away to when he was that age, and just wanted me to live it out for him. Anyway, I didn't. But the captain was Ernest McSorley. If I'd gotten and kept that job, I'd have gone down on the Fitzgerald. And we laughed...
And the waitress from the restaurant, standing on my other side for a quick smoke, said "Yeah. My dad was on that boat. I never got to meet him."
And that's pretty much how things are in our town.

I've got you beat, GGE. My guns are only from family/friends purchases. No paperwork at all.
Of course, they were all lost in a tragic canoe accident when I was fishing one time.

Infuriating to realize that there were sailors trapped alive in the aft sections of the sunken _Kursk_, who might have been saved. And yet the Russian navy and government insisted that they had it all under control, turning down all offers of foreign help, until after the oxygen ran out.
An obsessively paranoid culture.

My dad bought us shot gun shell reloaders for Christmas last year. They come in handy when the bird hunting seasons are underway.
We also have .38 9 mil and 7.62 and whatever for reloading. It's a nice chore to work at while watching the TV.
Of course, we sell all the reloads to the neighbors, as all of our weaponry has gone to the bottom of the lake due to the unfortunate boating accident.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but before the Kursk, USN submarines did have rescue docking capability with the American DSRV.
Depressingly enough, in the two American nuclear submarine losses to date, no rescue would have been possible.

Ivory: in 1989, when the ivory crisis was peaking, east African herds being ravaged by poachers, was with a group visiting Nairobi (already dubbed Nai-Rob-Me). One of our meetings was with Richard Leakey, son of the famous Olduvai Gorge anthropologist/discoverer of oldest homo sapiens remains (OK I've probably screwed that up - homo erectus? whatever). He was parks minister for Kenya, was about to preside over the famous torching of the pile of seized illegal tusks. His office - naturally - was on the edge of Kenya's oldest preserve, which actually now lies inside the urbanized area of Nairobi. I remember him as stereotypically the British civil servant, witty smart and sarcastic - and also how the meeting kept getting off-course because there were these baboons climbing up to the windows of the conference room, staring, showing their fangs, and generally f**king around. Hilarious.
Anyway, he was pretty open about the unspeakable truth back then - the preserves herds of the evil South African apartheid state were healthy and thriving (likewise those of SA neighbor Botswana) - while the herds in Kenya and Tanzania were prey to the typical corruption, inefficiency, and decay afflicting those countries (homes respectively of African nationalism and African socialism). Somalia had already disintegrated pretty much, and most of the poachers were Somalis (tough resourceful adversaries - I recall Leakey saying the only way they could beat them was to hire their relatives).
Anyway - ivory ban? WTF? Now? When most ivory here comes from Alaskan/Canadian "native" art and hunting? WTFF? Way things are going, I'll have a room full of banned evil articles, from firearms to the nice carvings I picked up in Alaska.

I know the general unwritten rule is you only shoot your own reloads yourself, you don't have others shoot them. But I've set aside a factory "reserve" in each caliber - just for general purposes, given how idiotic our country has become - and have been shooting only reloads for a while. But last weekend I did a steels match with a friend (25+ years in the SEALs), and had him use my 9mm reloads (he is gunless at the moment). My QC is pretty fanatical, I load middle range loads, so I guess I should relax about it. And the wife likes the M1 carbine, which only sees home-rolled ammo.
To tie into the ONT, the Ukrainian saga may drive up 7.62X54R prices (hmm, just checked on ammoseek.com and sure enough, up to .25/round - "equilibrium" price for the milsurp has been around .19 - .21/round for several years now). Don't reload for that - at these prices, why bother - and have a decent "stockpile" to feed my "arsenal" of Mosins. Thing is, I've always treated it like 22LR - just plinking with a main battle rifle round, burn up 100 rounds without giving it a thought. Would hate to have to start treating it like high-power rifle ammo .....

The Nextel PTT setup was like using a trunked radio system but one that worked over vast areas. All of the PTT systems that ran on more standard cellular setups were really clunky by comparison, especially in the lengthy setup time for making a connection. On the Nextel, if someone was on the network you could ping them and start talking in a second at worst.
Plus some of those Motorola phone models were tough as hell. I don't think we ever had one fail from abuse in the almost ten years my sometime employer had a fleet of them. Very primitive even compared to a decade old feature phone but durability mattered for our usage.

Hubby and I were in South Africa w/ Dad who has connections as in people who live there and will show you things like the way to do the trek through the Kruger National Park. It was beautiful. We were there in January 2009 and there were TONS of elephants.
They have parks in which you stay, locked in so the animals can't get you and you can't harass the animals.
One of the places is called Oliphants,, which is the Boer way I believe of saying Elephants. The elephants there are beautiful and travel in huge herds. They always keep the babies in the middle of the herd so they are well protected.
One of the ways they raised money to help pay the costs of maintaining the infrastructure to protect the herds was to harvest the tusks off the dead (by natural causes mostly - they have a pretty hard-core protection there, at least then) and sell the ivory to artists or just to tourists.
If the US is saying you can't buy it from that type of a place, where the whole intent is to protect the wildlife, what the HEY?
They US Gov is taking away one of the ways they can raise the money to keep the protection of the herds.
But this is TFG so what the heck do I know?

It's not that I disagreed with her analysis, especially for the majority, it's just that I object to the dismissal of the "conservatives inaccurate theory" lines. I've met too many "progressives" that seem to be just looking for an excuse to start loading the boxcars and attempting to hide behind the Nuremberg Defense IYKWIM...not a lot of them, maybe only 1 or 2 out of a hundred, but they are there.
There's one guy I've flat out told that when the balloon goes up I'm shooting him in the face first thing. Of course, he was the one that opened the dance by saying he can't wait for the purges to start so he can join the "forces of good" and kick in the doors of the ebil NRA gun loving sister humping chaw spitting neanderthals. Apparently he didn't realize that I was a gun toting libertarian leaning conservative...which is another thing that pisses me off about them, they aren't shy about spouting their bullshit and get offended if you don't agree with them...and by offended, I mean start looking for reasons to go to HR...

So what I was saying despite what the USN and the government said before during and after the Kursk loss, was all bullshit. If some shit happened to one of our subs it would have gone down pretty much the same way. Everyone would have died. They might have been able to pass down some soup and water down to us but we would have frozen to death or hypoxia before they could have rescued us via escape trunks.
If it's the Thresher thing, Thier Emergency blow lines were too small and froze up. So post that loss, we started making sure all that compressed air was water free and enlarged the lines so they could not freeze up. I actually had my life saved by an emergency blow. It was wild

March is a nice month around here. Things are up & down for me. Long story. Dumb ending. I'll tell it some time.
Am building the wildest thing ever in the woodshop. It is a hand rail that goes up the wall at some stairs, around a round column, levels off at the top of the stairs, continues around the round column and returns to the opposite of the wall. Looks like a twisting python and it's all oak. Steamer practice.

I had a dream this morning that started off with me working in some sort of office. I kept trying to show people what I was doing but nobody cared and every time I left where I'd been working there were new employees there when I returned. My MIL is very liberal. Hubby from WA, so that's a given. I'm originally from northern MN, which used to run a commie for president, if anyone is old enough to remember. Thank goodness Daddy is conservative, so he could explain to me why my $2.10 an hour job did not produce a $2.10 an hour paycheck!
Anyways, my MIL really loves me because I got her son off the coke and whiskey (well, pretty much, cuz he does get cranky with me and that's not allowed Daddy told me so), anyways MIL LOVES me, and when her sisters from Portland fucking Oregon were going on and on about how evil conservatives are, MIL told them to SHUT the hell up because there were conservatives present, whom she valued, they actually SHUT the hell up. Mostly because they were so flabbergasted that there were conservatives present. Then they started in about how religious people are evil.
Yes, I think they would send me to the camps. Because I am also somewhat religious, vs Spiritual, which is what they are. Never give any damn money to any cause, cuz the Govt should.
And isn;t that just the way they are?

It really is like being an astronaut. If someone in a far distant place was not paying attention at design time or fabrication time, then when a component fails, you're very likely going to die and have not much say in the matter.
You just have to cross your fingers and take a deep breath and hope that the people upstream were paying careful attention at work.

New York City cockroaches on the wing. What could go wrong?
Remembering here a friend who saw a Manhattan roach scuttle out from under a trash can, and instinctively stomp on it. Then stomp again. And again. And realize the little monster was still moving. Then start to look for a shotgun or a heavy rifle to finish the job. Then realize those things are illegal in NYC.
Give the roach a doorman's uniform and a job at a luxury high-rise complex. If you can't beat them, or crush them, co-opt them.

Barqs is now owned by Coke, but it was an independent regional company when I was growing up here. It wasn't available for sale outside of the South while in private hands. I used to haul a few cases up to Chicago every year when we went down to visit the parents. I would hand them out to friends as a special treat.
Due to some special quirk in the labeling laws of the time, Barq's could not have the words 'root beer' on the labeling. I dunno if that is still true or not; still, everyone called it root beer.
And yes, I swear it tastes different (and better) in the bottle. And if you DO happen to get one somewhere, chill that bitch down and drink it from the fucking bottle, m'kay? Don't pour it into a glass, and don't worry your sweet bippy about not having it with ice.
Drink Barq's, it's good.

I love Barq's. I believe I have partaken of it even here in fly-over NM.
My favorite story is before Coors went all over the country, I was driving back from El Paso TX to Minnesota, and we went thru NM and Colorado on the way home, via the Coors plan in Golden.
Stocked up on quite a few cases of Coors, and gave it out to quite a few friends back in Minnesota. They like it. It was different, then, so much Schlitz and Schmidt and Pabst that everyone could get. It was fun. Like Christmas in August.
I know it should be fancier, but August was the month I drove home. In a 1972 Pinto hatchback as a matter of fact.

Zakn
I grew up in Hibbing, MN, home of the infamous Bob Dylan when he was in high school.
I also lived in Duluth for a while, during my first attempt at college.
Then back to Hibbing, home of the biggest open pit iron ore mine in the world.
Then I finished up college in Bemidji, where I received a BS degree from BSU, then in St. Paul, on White Bear Avenue, and worked in downtown St. Paul.
And now I live where the sun shines most the time in the Enchanted Land of New Mexico.
I really miss Minnesota fishing, but not the winters or misquitoes!

There's another racial angle worth exploring in the Global Warming section... the nations hardest hit by international global warming agreements are in Africa. That's also where the DDT ban hit hardest, by the way.
It seems like they want as many Africans as possible to be living in huts, making $1 a week if they're lucky, dying in their 20s from malaria... and if they had their way, they'd bring this very lifestyle here to the US. Not for themselves, though; as Party members in good standing, they expect to remain above it all.

It's an add-on script I got from Merovign that allows you to disappear commenters by hashtag. I've used it three times -- one guy got banhammered shortly afterward, the next disappeared and may have been banhammered longly afterward, and the last time I went passive-aggressive on a 'ron but ended up reversing that same night....though the 'ette he was messing with didn't come back for days and I was fretting we'd lost her.

Time to once again break out the Heinlein Quote:
Throughout history, poverty is the normal condition of man. Advances which permit this norm to be exceeded — here and there, now and then — are the work of an extremely small minority, frequently despised, often condemned, and almost always opposed by all right-thinking people. Whenever this tiny minority is kept from creating, or (as sometimes happens) is driven out of a society, the people then slip back into abject poverty.
This is known as “bad luck.”

What did the JEF do to actually warrant it?
It has to be an actual high crime or misdemeanor of course

Actually, from real studies of constitutional law and all that.....it's whatever congress says it is when they decide to say it.

To be slightly more precise.....the Founders debated about what might constitute "impeachable offenses", and decided to be ambiguous -- "you'll know it when you see it." So it could well be something like "lying to Congress", when there is a strong will to dispose of an overweening Executive.

Several SC rulings have held that the prezzie cannot ignore a law that has been duly enacted. He must enforce it.
Of course, that line of thought is now Old And Busted.
The New Hotness is the law is whatever he sez it is.

Why don't you just photocopy Nixon's articles?
"He has, acting personally and through his subordinates and agents, endeavoured to obtain from the Internal Revenue Service, in violation of the constitutional rights of citizens, confidential information contained in income tax returns for purposed not authorized by law, and to cause, in violation of the constitutional rights of citizens, income tax audits or other income tax investigations to be intitiated or conducted in a discriminatory manner."
"In his conduct of the office of President of the United States, Richard M. Nixon, contrary to his oath faithfully to execute the office of President of the United States and, to the best of his ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States, and in violation of his constitutional duty to take care that the laws be faithfully executed, has failed without lawful cause or excuse to produce papers and things as directed by duly authorized subpoenas "

How about this (it will need to be edited to replace Nixon's name with Obama's, and some of the particular agencies will need to be changed, but other than item 4, it does seem to line up pretty well otherwise):
ARTICLE 2
Using the powers of the office of President of the United States, Richard M. Nixon, in violation of his constitutional oath faithfully to execute the office of President of the United States and, to the best of his ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States, and in disregard of his constitutional duty to take care that the laws be faithfully executed, has repeatedly engaged in conduct violating the constitutional rights of citizens, impairing the due and proper administration of justice and the conduct of lawful inquiries, or contravening the laws governing agencies of the executive branch and the purposed of these agencies.
This conduct has included one or more of the following:
1. He has, acting personally and through his subordinates and agents, endeavoured to obtain from the Internal Revenue Service, in violation of the constitutional rights of citizens, confidential information contained in income tax returns for purposed not authorized by law, and to cause, in violation of the constitutional rights of citizens, income tax audits or other income tax investigations to be intitiated or conducted in a discriminatory manner.
2. He misued the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Secret Service, and other executive personnel, in violation or disregard of the constitutional rights of citizens, by directing or authorizing such agencies or personnel to conduct or continue electronic surveillance or other investigations for purposes unrelated to national security, the enforcement of laws, or any other lawful function of his office; he did direct, authorize, or permit the use of information obtained thereby for purposes unrelated to national security, the enforcement of laws, or any other lawful function of his office; and he did direct the concealment of certain records made by the Federal Bureau of Investigation of electronic surveillance.
3. He has, acting personally and through his subordinates and agents, in violation or disregard of the constitutional rights of citizens, authorized and permitted to be maintained a secret investigative unit within the office of the President, financed in part with money derived from campaign contributions, which unlawfully utilized the resources of the Central Intelligence Agency, engaged in covert and unlawful activities, and attempted to prejudice the constitutional right of an accused to a fair trial.
4. He has failed to take care that the laws were faithfully executed by failing to act when he knew or had reason to know that his close subordinates endeavoured to impede and frustrate lawful inquiries by duly constituted executive, judicial and legislative entities concerning the unlawful entry into the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee, and the cover-up thereof, and concerning other unlawful activities including those relating to the confirmation of Richard Kleindienst as Attorney General of the United States, the electronic surveillance of private citizens, the break-in into the offices of Dr. Lewis Fielding, and the campaign financing practices of the Committee to Re-elect the President.
5. In disregard of the rule of law, he knowingly misused the executive power by interfering with agencies of the executive branch, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Criminal Division, and the Office of Watergate Special Prosecution Force, of the Department of Justice, and the Central Intelligence Agency, in violation of his duty to take care that the laws be faithfully executed.
In all of this, Richard M. Nixon has acted in a manner contrary to his trust as President and subversive of constitutional government, to the great prejudice of the cause of law and justice and to the manifest injury of the people of the United States.
Wherefore Richard M. Nixon, by such conduct, warrants impeachment and trial, and removal from office.

I actually had a sub-5-foot Filipina young lady working for me, doing internal audit, some years back. We went to this branch office near Windsor in the UK and she was the staffer I chose to make the first trip.
So we get there (me carrying all the gear), and do all the pleasantries, and get cubes, and settle in, and start to work. The UK guys are all looking at her like, "oh, cthulhu brought a kid." So, during the day, I'm going around and pulling stuff, and stacking it in her cube, she's executing tests on binders and piles of paper and logging results and I'm just making sure she doesn't overrun the workflow.
About 4:30, we have a meeting to summarize Day 1: "Here are 16 things you f'ed up last quarter."
Now I could go all self-congratulatory and take credit for the clever audit plans and well-thought-out risk assessment and overall management.....but, damn, she was so good at flying through that stuff! The next day, when she walked in and sat down at her cube, there was a hush. Months later, I sent her with a junior staffer and she had zero problems.
I should also point out that, about a year later, she independently discovered that the overall company bad-debt assessment (prepared by an experienced CPA who made 5x what she did) erroneously calculated a total in dollars and subtracted out specific allocations in Euros.....despite her not even having an accounting degree.

Convenience stores actually open up?
Round here, the same stores have been open continuously since 1865. Twenty-four hours a day since there were 24 hours in a day. (Used to be twenty back when. Kids these days.)
Open since then with the same staff. They occasionally have to be re-animated. Frankenstein style. Bolts in the neck and all. If there isn't an electrical storm, the patrons are shit out of luck.
It was apparently a real pain in the ass to get a microwave burrito back before microwaves had been invented. Or so they tell me.

And, yes -- that was a damn fine article by zombie. I've been thinking, and have experienced real life situations playing out, along those same lines for quite some time now, but have never managed to collect all those thoughts into a neat, coherent package as zombie does.
It's a definite keeper. Kudos aplenty, zombie!

I went by the 7-11 and the guy was locking up. I said, "What are you doing? The sign says open 24 hours."
"Yeah but not in a row."

Perhaps "convenience" is too strong a word for it. Maybe "happenstance" or "serendipity" is more accurate.

The level of projection in progressives is just fookin' amazing. They ARE the evil, and they tag anything conservatives do that resembles them as being the evil they are -- e.g. "big business has too much money in politics (AHEM: labor); those evil Koch brothers (AHEM: Soros); charter schools don't teach (AHEM: teacher's unions); conservatives in lockstep (AHEM: Dem party discipline).....White is Black; Up is Down; we've always been at war with Eastasia.

I was born in the People's Republic of Santa Monica, and I've lived all my life in California. One of my prime targets for relocation is Knoxville, TN, where my aunt has a kaffeeklatsch for the "Knoxville Rationalists", or somesuch....I know damned well how sneeringly false Progs can be.
For all the false accusations of racism, actual conservatives put concern about race at about #374 on a list of "top 100 issues" list, every time.

exactly. think it was flagged up here the other day but it was a piece looking at the underbelly of modern progressivism through the lens of Ackman's now successful attack on Herbalife (I have no dog in that fight but would be interested in the "expert network" that Ackman has leveraged with the FTC and why it would be legal). A similar article appeared a few years back about Picken's gift to the OSU Cowboys.
It is the iron triangle of tax free foundation money, hedge funds, and government. Saw a peek of it when Madoff's scheme shit-the-bed, PP took a big hit on that. Pretty sure he isn't the only one and probably not even the most egregious. He had the misfortune of getting caught.
