10 I'm gobsmacked to see that there are some here who are voting for Jeb Bush.

Posted by: wheatie at March 08, 2014 05:46 PM (8quPO)

11 It's important for the nominee to keep a low-ish profile as long as possible. Not being on this list is a good start.

Posted by: forest at March 08, 2014 05:46 PM (stMuz)

12 I like Jeff Sessions too, but the GOP mainliners and media would chop him to bits.

15 Out of that list, Rick Perry, based solely on my level of trust in him being a competent leader who would not fuck the country over. I'm not factoring electability or any of that stuff.

Posted by: Y-not at March 08, 2014 05:47 PM (zDsvJ)

16 Bugger.

Posted by: Brother Cavil at March 08, 2014 05:47 PM (dJcew)

17 I'd really like the GOP to meet up, the true conservative ones and come up with a plan to take control, whoever gets the POTUS.  Because it is going to take 10 or 15 of them working together to undo the last 20 years of BS.

Why would you want to put him in an office without any real power? Its really not an office, its a punishment. The vice-presidency of the United States is the worst consolation price in history.

32 Since OT:  So I talk with my older brother earlier tonight on the phone... he's in his late 50's and he's decided to join in on the 9-11 conspiracy.  Oh hell.  He said he spent 20 hours going over everything and he's not only convinced, he's looked into Sandy Hook too!  He got so worked up talking with me he hung up.  Count me as disappointed.  I thought he had better wisdom than to fall for that kind of shit.  Obama has warped his brain.

34 10 No kidding wheatie. If they stuff him down our throats, I'll have a free hour in 11/16 that would have otherwise been spent trying to advance Conservative causes.

44 Y-Not- You are correct.

I was just surprised that Cruz didn't fair better in percentages.

From NRO, "This is Senator PaulÂ’s second win in a row. He won with 31 percent of the vote, with Senator Ted Cruz taking 11 percent. Ben Carson, a retired neurosurgeon and Fox News contributor whoÂ’s been named as a potential 2016 dark-horse candidate, came in third with 9 percent of the vote."

The big plus factor is if it turns out to be a successful presidency, like Reagan/Bush, then the VP has a leg up at carrying the success forward. But, for that to work out as a plus, you need someone in the VP slot who wants to advance those policies further instead of gutting them.

65 Best thing about Walker is he used his power to permanently weaken the institutional Left in Wisconsin. That's a man who understands power and politics. As was mentioned earlier in the week, CPAC's own demographic analysis shows their attendees in no way reflect the Republican, let alone Conservative base.

The crowd is half female, overwhelming college age and mostly from within a couple of hours drive of DC.

Hence all the networking breakouts and such. Disproportionately 5th year seniors who bring their resumes with them.

These regulatory agencies are rotten to the core and full of shitty democrats who will undermine any effort.  It is not going to be enough to elect a conservative to POTUS and GOP Congress.

I hope Perry forces the issue ( if he runs) and rekindles the debate about what agencies will need to be let go and others completely reformed.  It is a debate that absolutely needs airing.  The Federal Government is broken and corrupt.

I love LOVE me some Cruz (I point out at every possible opportunity that you partly have me to thank, as I made a point of voting for him in the early primary which helped force the runoff that elected him) but he's pretty green, is good where he is and I prefer that presidential candidates have executive experience. I'd like to get back on the Perry bandwagon but he has yet to prove to me that he will be a capable campaigner either in the primaries or in a general election. I think that he could and I hope so but time will tell and we have plenty of it. 220 When he wins in November, Walker will have won 3 consecutive races in just 4 years in one of the most politically divided states in the nation after signing concealed carry, further restrictions on abortion, massive tax cuts, voter ID (which the assembly plans to double-down on thanks to an aggressive fight in the courts), and balancing the state budget almost entirely by gutting the stuffed union pigs, all while taking a nonstop torrent of shit from his opponents. There isn't a single Republican governor who has done all he has in as little time as he has served in a state as antithetical to conservativism (not voting for an R President in 30 years, voting for a Republican Senator only once in decades, Democratic party registration edge, etc) as Wisconsin. Really, that's why I've been on the guy's team, despite the fact that there are those with bigger ground games right now. 235 "Rove is behind those fucking robocalls? Nothing a senior loves more than to walk on arthritic knees to answer a robocall. FYI Karl .. seniors do watch cable tv and most of them do go on the internet"

Help a moron out here.

All of my elderly family members now have Caller ID.

But they are all from an earlier and more innocent era and it is INCREDIBLY GODDAMNED HARD to get them to ignore a ringing phone, even when the Caller ID says it's unknown or unrecognized. They'll still pick up and talk to whomever it is (a scammer, of course).

Instinctively, automatically. Because in their day, that's what you did. And even if they don't fall for the scam, the mere fact that they answered then brings a flood of further scam calls. About which they then bitch to me.

My saying, "If you hadn't bloody well talked to the first one then this problem would be a lot less frequent," has not been helpful.

What I want is a technological fix. A phone system where it will ring _if and only if_ the Caller ID matches something in its known internal directory, and will go silently to voice mail if there is no match. So friends, family, doctors' offices and whatnot can reach them quickly in person, but scammers will be discouraged.

Minus Reagan's incredibly deft abilities to (a) keep the various factions inside the GOP big tent from slitting one another's throats, and (b) to magnetically pull certain blocs of voters from inside the Democratic tent.

Reagan's attitude towards libertarians was incredibly warm and welcoming. Go back and read his pathbreaking 1976 interview with _Reason_.

If a new conservative party emerges, it should run its first round of primaries based on the previous general presidential election. Those states the last Republican candidate won by the widest margins should go first, and blue states should go last.

I would vote for Paul, Cruz, Perry, Palin and Walker

I would stay home for Huckbaby, Santorum, Bush, Christie.

I don't know enough about Jindal to have an opinion and Ryan/Rubio have taken positions I don't think I can forgive.

I am not sure why Trump's name is even on there.

Ben Carson has unclean hands when it comes to the 2nd amendment, and frankly, I think stuff is likely to show up in his past since he has never run for office before.

But the Republicans having five guys I would be pretty enthusiastic about has to be some sort of record.  Maybe Obama has just lowered the standard so far that more people look good by comparison.

Ted Cruz is right on the issues, but I find his style incredibly grating and his voice is like nails on a chalkboard.  I don't see him having much appeal outside the base.

267 There's definitely Republicans I don't like, but I'm not of these assholes that's going to threaten to stay home if I don't get my way.  Romney was flawed but any conservative that "sat out" because of that and allowed Obama to get elected did this country no favors.

I've pretty much accepted that any candidate running nationwide is going to be to the "left" of me if they actually want to get elected.

The candidates I would have the most problem with is Santorum and Huckabee, just because I think it would put the conservative movement in the wilderness for a long time, maybe a generation as their social conservatism is so over the top.

It still amazes me how so many people want to elect someone to the highest executive office in the world without any qualifications for that office (i.e. no executive experience). Rand Paul and Ted Cruz lead this poll? Sad. They both currently are in positions which require absolutely NO responsibilities for making decisions whatsoever. Their only job is to listen to the sound of their own voice while giving speeches and once in a while cast a vote that is only 1 of 100. I just do not understand how anyone thinks Senators or Congressmen would make good Presidents. Add them to the ticket as the VP, sure. Have them gain experience that way. But to jump from a completely useless and responsibility-less job as Senator/Congressman to President? Ridiculous.

283 Of course, the logical Reganesque ticket would be Perry/Jeb. *runs away*

284 Perry
Cruz
Gowdy or Rand Paul

In that order. Either/or paired together would be awesome.

285 "I would stay home for Huckbaby, Santorum, Bush, Christie. I don't know enough about Jindal to have an opinion and Ryan/Rubio have taken positions I don't think I can forgive. I am not sure why Trump's name is even on there." I agree, but would add Rubio and Ryan to my "non-starters" list.

287 >>Minus Reagan's incredibly deft abilities to (a) keep the various factions inside the GOP big tent from slitting one another's throats, and (b) to magnetically pull certain blocs of voters from inside the Democratic tent.<< Yes but that's personal aptitude rather than a policy decision. If a better spokesman came along I'd throw my vote behind them. "Reagan's attitude towards libertarians was incredibly warm and welcoming. Go back and read his pathbreaking 1976 interview with _Reason_. Whereas Santorum thinks they're a bunch of inimical libertines under color of liberty, who will dope and screw decent society into extinction while wrapped in the Constitution." I recall that Reagan had a cold shoulder for supporters of gay marriage and secular humanism and unrestricted drugs. There's a split in the libertarian movement between drug-soaked libertines and "libertarians" and I feel it is on them to sort themselves out rather than jumping on me for confusing them when they choose the same label. Once upon a time this country was a collection of communities that regulated abortion, intoxication, school prayer, gambling, firearm possession, obscenity and sexuality. It is the Left in the last few decades that insists, falsely, that all such things were decided and guaranteed in 1867 with the 14th Amendment. The opposition to these federal ukases is necessarily a federal matter. That doesn't mean we're "statists" on the level of NARAL. But the light at the end of the tunnel is a return to the era of local blue laws, not a nationally guaranteed saturnalia. MadisonConservative is the only "libertarine" who gets that his program is a break with the history of the United States. If "liberty' is the absence of "theocracy" as libertarines define it, the US has never had it.
