Quarantine Cafe: Dudes Posting Their W's Online Edition
— Ace

Dude save sheep.

The problem is, it has a sheeplike intelligence.

Looks like a NeverTrumper.

Puppy with birth defect in spine learns to walk.

Pizzly Bears?

This is the weirdest thing: Parrot Sings (Don't Fear) The Reaper.

This husky is almost as weird as that parrot:

Is this the sexiest video ever made?

It takes a while to get to the Dude Posting His W Online.

Dude applies Advanced Broscience to terminate gophers with extreme prejudice. Specifically, he flooded the tunnels with propane gas and kept the tank running.

Would-be armed robber gets disarmed-- and bodyslammed.

And then he starts crying like a literal infant, to let the world know how much of a man he really is.

40 Aircraft S/R looks to be about 3fps. It was probably designed for at least 6fps. The approach was perfect. Never flair like you would in landing. You just set a < 6fps glide slope and fly it straight into the water but with a moderate positive deck angle at your stall +5 or so knots. This is harder with a lot of modern aircraft which experience a good bit of ground effect even over water. A good enough margin above stall so you don't roll off and dip the wings. They had pretty calm water too but you just fly through the waves if they're there.
The Sully movie and the associated incident has put a lot more visibility on design for ditching. Both the impact loads and egress survivability.

62 Speaking of Chauvin, anyone else *want* those riots to happen if he found not guilty?  Like you know, you just know, that they're going to be the single worst riots this country has ever seen.  Buildings will burn.  The human suffering will be incredible.  Then, after polls start showing disapproval of the mass carnage, the Democrats will crack down on it with an iron fist.
As they say...good and hard.

63 There are a bunch of videos of people taunting British guardsmen (Buckingham Palace, Tower of London, etc.) on the 'Tube. They too have their rules of engagement that require them to put up with a lot of crap.
But the moment someone goes beyond those limits, things change in a hurry. Touching them is definitely beyond the limits.
I recall one of some smirking Chinese teen punk winding up with a bayonet hovering about a millimeter away from the entrance to his nasal cavity. Somehow the game stopped being funny to him right about then.

73 Funny, someone just mentioned Blue Oyster Cult in my tech thread this morning.

I've contacted another hosting company - one I've used previously and worked well - about getting a second main server well away from Utah and its terrible power infrastructure.  Then I realised they're in Texas, which is fine as long as it doesn't freeze over again.

I had a couple of good go-to providers who support free speech and have decent prices.  One got bought out by a larger company and their prices tripled, and the other is the one that just had the datacenter fire.  They also have servers in Los Angeles, but currently they're about 200% busy fixing things in Utah because their backup power is still being replaced after the fire, and the local grid has gone down three times in two weeks.

So I had to dig back in my files and find someone we used about 9 years ago.  Still around and has some good deals, so I'll likely have another main server in the next few days.

101 Interesting thought, Emmie.
Maybe you could fence off the plot, dump in a bunch of gophers or groundhogs or prairie dogs or whatever, leave them to do their work, then blow it up to finish the job.
You'd probably need some way of recovering the rodents, though, or you'd have to replace them every time.

106 Just so people know (I posted in a previous thread but it probable zoomed past): This small backup server gets overloaded sometimes.  Our main server is 4x as fast and would cope easily, whether using the old or new software.

Our main server was down for two weeks due to a power outage and the ensuing fire and flood (long story).  It just came back, and now it's down again because of another power outage.  They don't have all their backup power systems online again yet because some of them are currently charcoal.

So I'm looking to get another main server at least a couple of states away from Utah.

Maybe you could fence off the plot, dump in a bunch of gophers or groundhogs or prairie dogs or whatever, leave them to do their work, then blow it up to finish the job.  You'd probably need some way of recovering the rodents, though, or you'd have to replace them every time.
A food trap or a female in heat might work.

I have mixed feelings about rare warbirds flying. It's always thrilling to see them fly but aside from the tragedy of loss of life, some of these airplanes are one of a kind so when they are lost, they're gone forever. Part of me thinks they should never be allowed aloft, but the other part thinks that seeing and hearing them in flight is living history.

155 JJ, it's a big topic in the warbird community. Some think aircraft in museums are "dead" as they will never fly again. Others realize that these planes were never designed with safety as a priority and no matter how carefully maintained and flown, things may go sideways. They aren't Cessnas and crashes were expected. With the high value (for now, at least) of the planes there is a lot of basically scratchbuilding at an artisan level to original plans and aircraft exist now, built around a few original pieces that didn't 20 or 30 years back. I suspect the lack of engines will eventually ground them. It's a lot harder to recreate a big piston engine than it is to build airframes.

158 I don't think there's anything magic about restoring that TBM, for whatever damage it sustained - just a question of $$$$.  Anything can be restored with enough money.

I'd say fly 'em.  I think the incident rate with most warbirds is better than for normal aircraft, as one would expect, given the attention they get and the experience level of those flying them (generalizing here).

I know I've been thrilled to hear "the sound of round" at airshows since I was a kid.  We still have two SNJs that do flightseeing around here, see/hear them once in a while.

One special treat was in the last decade at the Chino airshow - 5 P-38s escorting 4 B-25s, I think it was - amazing sight and sound.  And then they joined the "parade" of all warbirds flying that day - think the number was 43 or something.  That was amazing.

From the comments I believe azjaeger might live near Tucson, if so, would you comment on the Friends and Family days that Davis Montham did yearly? (I was there 10 years ago so I don't know if they do them any longer)

As a hint: they would have a 40s warbird, with a 60's with modern fly formation.

The oldest would be flying it's fastest, the 60's just tooling along and the modern going as slow as a jet can fly.

Impressive.

182 Well new Yak-3s were produced in Russia in the early 90s specifically for the warbird market - but that's a unique situation, I think.

But aren't some damn fools producing new Me-262s up in OR somewhere?

Point is, new production can happen for select models.  I was thinking that one thing coming from 3D might be cheaper/more feasible special production of components for warbirds/new builds.

But as there are now 2 B-29s flying - and that's probably the most expensive proposition there is, in terms of restoring a warbird to flying status - I would think where there's $$$, there's a way.

195 I have mixed feelings about rare warbirds flying.

I used to hang out with some classic car peeps.  I asked about the wear and tear and almost all of them said the cars needed to be run or they'd deteriorate in ways that might not be found until they were driven.  Mechanical things, if properly built and maintained are made to run a really long time.

The insurance on those things must be obscene, but you can bet the pilot and his/her ground crew go over the aircraft before and after every flight with a fine tooth comb.

And lastly, there was a TBD like the one in the vid and a P-51 flying around Fort Knox the other day.  I'm about 12 miles away but with a massively zoomed in telephoto lens I got a blurry snapshot of the two of them.  The TBD is huge in comparison to the '51.

212 For as long as it remains certifiably airworthy, any aircraft is a living, breathing thing.  Some are Ferraris and Ducatis, some are Beetles and Vespas. They all can really only be truly appreciated throttle up, in flight, until they simply can't be any longer.

To a true motorhead, there is nothing more beautiful than the full throated song of Merlin, Allison, or Pratt. Hence Reno.

Keeping rare warbirds flying is a testament and devotional to the skill and courage of the pilots who flew them to keep us free when life and liberty were in jeopardy. It is a noble pursuit of happiness.

It is also a significant micro-economy that cultivates trades and skills around itself that are rare and beautiful in themselves.

More Power To Them.

I think some bands might appear to be one-hit wonders based on their popularity in the US but they actually had more success in England. This was true of the Walker Brothers.  I was also noticing the same thing about Jackie Wilson.

275 Mondale was better than about 99% of the people who call themselves "Democrats" nowadays, and about 90% of the "Republicans".
Running against Reagan was a tough gig. He probably would've been President if he'd run against a Romney or a Bush II.
I think Bob Dole would have kicked his ass, though.

276 I've placed an order for a second main server in Dallas, which should be safe from whatever ancient burial ground they've dug up in Utah.

Intel W1290P (10 cores, up to 5.3GHz)
64GB RAM
1TB + 2TB NVMe drives

Similar size to the existing main server - faster on single-threaded, just a little faster on multi-threaded.

Compared to this backup server it will be night and day.  10 cores instead of 4, and each core twice as fast.

They hope to have the server up and running tomorrow - they need to get a 2TB NVMe drive in for me first - and then I can reload the backups I took from the old main server before the lights went out again in Utah.

285 William Donald Schaefer - long time mayor of Baltimore in the 70s and early 80s - was a decent guy. Old school Dem. Probably the last good mayor of Baltimore. He then served 2 terms as governor of MD. The city became the shithole it is now after he left office.
In the early 2000s, he was "canceled" (using today's parlance) cuz he made comments about people not speaking English.

It's easy to do when not a single Progda reporter will ever call her or any other Democrat on their illegal or racist acts.   Compare to the phony Russia! Russia! Russia! assault on American viewers for 3 years.

Yes, and like it a lot and would purchase again.  I think that, so long as you don't have some overly complex situation or need, it's a nearly perfect solution.

What I like the most is that the smoke alarms are tied in so that you can quickly have firemen stand by and watch your home burn down if you get an alert that the smoke detectors are going off and no one is home.
