Saturday Afternoon Chess thread 04-10-2021 [OregonMuse]
— Ace Open Blog

I've been wresting with the new interface all day. I hope I didn't botch this thread too badly.

Pic Note:

I have no idea who this is. The only identifier on the Pinterest link said "Istanbul Olympiade d'échecs 2012" and I did not have time to pursue it further.

Beginner Problem - White To Play (1308 )
Goal: White can force mate in 2 moves
Hint: Use the knight to block, not a smothered mate

1k5r/ppN3pp/2b3n1/6Q1/5B2/3n1PPB/PP2q2P/R5K1 w - - 0 1

Intermediate Problem - Black To Play
(1333)
Goal: White can force mate in 5 moves
Hint: Force White's King into the center of the board

                                        3kr3/1R3pb1/P2p2p1/N6r/1N3PbP/1B4P1/1PP5/2K5 b - - 0 1

Advanced Problem - White To Play (1331)
Goal: White can force mate in 4 moves
Map out as many of the mating lines as you can.

                                2b4r/3P1kb1/p3p1p1/2N2p2/2B1pPp1/2q1B1P1/Pr6/R2Q1RK1 w - - 0 1

Dress Pron For the 'Ettes:

Greetings from Cyprus

("Honestly, lady, would it kill you to smile a little bit?")

(Melania note: somebody complained a couple of weeks back about the Melania pics not being current and/or repeats. I confess my guilt on both counts. The trouble I'm having is that Melania has not been making that many public appearances lately so it has been difficult to come up with current pics. If you find any that you think might be good enough to post, send a link to me at my yahoo e-mail address and I will have a look. Thank you.)

___________

Problem Solutions:

Sorry, you'll have to do without the diagrams this week, just refer the original diagrams.

Beginner:

1.Ne8+! Nde5
(1...Ka8 2.Qd8#)
(1...Qe5 2.Qd8#)
2.Qd8#

So Black has 3 responses to White's killer move, but none of them are enough to stop the mate on d8.

Intermediate:

1...Re1+
2.Kd2 Rd1+
3.Ke3 Bd4+
4.Ke4 d5+
5.Nxd5 f5#

Advanced:

1.Bxe6+ Ke7
(1... Kf6 2.d8=Q+ Rxd8 3.Qxd8#)
2.dxc8=N+! Rxc8
(2...Kf6 3.Bd4+ Qxd4+ 4.Qxd4#)
(2...Ke8 3.Qd7+ Kf8 4.Qf7#)
3.Qd7+ Kf6
(3...Kf8 4.Qf7#)
4.Qf7# 1-0

Hope to see you all next week!
___________

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app.
___________

So that about wraps it up for this week. Chess thread tips, suggestions, bribes, rumors, threats, and insults may be sent to my yahoo address: OregonMuse little-a-in-a-circle yahoo dott com.

21 Well my craft show was better than I expected considering it rained all damn day and it was cold to boot.  The first two hours looked like it was going to be a long day but people came out anyway and at 11:00 and again around 1:00 there was a big rush.  So...I've done better but I'm pretty happy with the result today.  And man it felt great to be out there again.  What a difference a year makes though.  I'm exhausted.

65 It’s the final stretch of the Trumps’ first international trip (May 2017), and earlier today, Melania Trump paid homage to the city of Brussels in a suit from Belgian designer Maison Ullens. This latest skirt suit, designed by Myriam Ullens de Schooten, falls in line with the First Lady’s style, as seen thus far. The light taupe suit came with a tonal, built-in belt, a signature detail that the First Lady employs often. Grounding the look were snakeskin Manolo Blahnik stilettos; Trump’s diamond ring acted as her only accessory.

I seem to have read Queen Victoria was more of a knitter than an artist. I know that in one of the many British Army campaigns some of her knitting for the troops was given to the the most popular soldier, an American soldier of fortune.

I see the goal is mate in 4, so don't quite have it..
(Kf8  2. d8(Q) mate; Ke7 2. PxB(N)+  K to 8th Rank leads to 3. Qd8 and quick mate)

2. Qd4+   QxQ
3. BxQ+   e5

When I lived in Turkey I was in the hinterlands.  Sinop.  You did not se any women from between the ages of 13 to their 20's.  Then, after they were married, they'd show up in public.  Except for the wealthy in town.

Istanbul was a different story.  Very cosmopolitan.  Great city and fun.

176 Way OT - but The Masters is on - and its the worst one ever in my opinion. The Boswell spawn loves to watch every year, but she just turned it off and just said "no" A giant list of nobodies and never-will-be's are at the top of the leaderboard and most of the most famous guys are either gone or pretty out of it by now....on a Saturday with still another round to play.
The problem with golf, and she knows this, is that the best don't always win anymore, and a lot of times they don't even get close to winning - its an odd combination of luck and streakiness now given the advancement of the golf ball and the modern equipment available.  And at the elite pro-level, they are all pretty much the same in their ability, so pulling or hoping for anyone golfer is just a fruitless task.
And TV sports (if golf is even a sport, its more a game of skill and chance), you really need someone to route for with a solid chance every week...and modern golf no longer affords that. The Masters has been reduced to a two hour after thought these days by CBS - a small segment played out on a dismal Saturday afternoon - and that is an indication of that loss of fans...that's a shame given professional golf's adherence to mostly conservative values. But only a real return to much less forgiving equipment and golf balls will return pro golf to its former glory.

191 Hi everybody. I'm here. Is it just me or are things starting to feel more normal?
I have had a productive week. I finally got a new phone so bye bye battery issues. Got my data transferred and got it paired to the car with only a little bit of tech assistance from my carrier. I picked up my new Rossi pump action 22 today and can't wait to try it out. I also made an offer on a condo but don't think it is going anywhere but at least I put it out there. Weather has been lovely.  Now, if only the grey boxes come back.....

a little salt and pepper rarely hurts. To me and many, seasoning is a word that means only one thing, salt and pepper. The rest is spices, herbs, etc.

But if the sauce is strong enough, there are times when there is no need for seasoning at all. I have been getting into Korean style ramjun (ramen) recently and some of those spice packs are so hot the idea of adding anything else seems superfluous.

Hideki needs to learn some English. This is a business, and he needs to work at all aspects of the craft. If he chooses not to, that is fine, but he will be leaving money on the table. Look at the Spaniards that have done so well in the Masters, they pretty much all learned English, and learned it well.   Sure he will be all that in Japan if he wins, no doubt there. But still, he should learn the language because it will open up a lot more opportunities.

good point. That is an old cliche, but from my experience it rings true. The foreigner who can't speak English, speaks it better than most Americans trying out their language. My point was this is show biz, and he needs to give the people who are paying for it a bit more.

I heard the Korean girls who dominate the LPGA work very hard on their English skills for just that purpose. Shy is fine, but these people are millionaires with a brand.  But Japan can be a different place. I think some don't fully understand how insulated it can be. It is an island, and in many ways less open to outside influences than a mainland country such as China.

231 Since it came up, sort of.

A ways back, prior to the C19 debacle, I was doing my homework on emergency preparedness (= earthquake, here, really nothing else to worry about except fires, but then you just scoot, totally different issues).

Got some pool shock (calcium hypochlorite) for water purification, decided to delve into it a bit, for various reasons.  Did a medium-shallow dive from most prominent sources.  One was CDC guidance.  I noted how the thing was packed to the gills with references (to actual research results).  Kind of overwhelming.

When C19 started, I made it my hobby, so was reading everything put out on it from CDC and several European sources.  Before long - once the radical experimental "mitigation" policies started coming out - I noticed that wisdom and advice dispensed by CDC came with approximately zero references or basis in science (and I don't mean the novel aspects, where, duh, there won't be much to go on).

Of course the crowning inglorious disgrace here is masks, for which voluminous research and understanding exist, going back 70 years+.  Some have noted one glorious little thing, the CDC itself published a meta-study *in May of last year* summarizing the research:  limited benefit from true respirators properly used in a clinical setting, no measurable benefit from everything else.  And they didn't even touch on the observational data, which goes back even further, and of course confirms the lack of efficacy of masks for this kind of problem.

Ah, but you neglect that as a totem it makes people feel secure, so from that stand point whether or not it actually does anything is less relevant. Because science is about the feelz to those what loves and worships it sexually.

An Ohio court ruled the mask mandate unconstitutional.  Part of the ruling is that they could provide no scientific evidence to justify wearing masks.  So for all the "TRUST THE SCIENCE!" shrieking when it came time to prove it they could not provide any SCIENCE to TRUST.
