Saturday Car Thread 03/08/14 - [Niedermeyer's Dead Horse & Countrysquire]
— Open Blogger

Good afternoon my lovelies.

LetÂ’s get to it.

Chrysler orders that donated Vipers be destroyed.

IÂ’m not in the least bit worked up about this. ItÂ’s a shame but the colleges had an agreement with Chrysler and abuse of that agreement cost Fiat millions. Further, the college admits that there is little educational value in the car. Then, thereÂ’s this little bit of wackiness:

“It’s like the day Kennedy was shot,” Norm Chapman, automotive technology professor at SPSCC, said. “No one will forget where they were when they heard the news.”

Get some perspective, dude.

An old story, but a good one: A 102-year old man owned the same car for 78 years: A 1928 Rolls Royce.

The science is settled! Marijuana contributes to deadly car crashes.

Not so fastÂ…

Is pot really to blame for these accidents? Unlike alcohol, marijuana can remain in the bloodstream for weeks after it has been consumed -- possibly affecting driving skills, possibly not. (Consider this: CNN found that Washington's limit of five nanograms of THC per milliliter of blood wasn't nearly high enough to negatively impact driving.) The study's authors caution that their findings don't indicate that the drivers were impaired from pot at the time of their accident, only that they had used pot sometime in the recent past.

Beware Mother's bearing scientific "data".

Lifestyles of the rich and infamous:

It seems that "Wow!" means the same thing everywhere.

Beauty of the week:

I can only think of a couple cars introduced in the last dozen or so years which are worth as much now as when they were new, and neither are getting cheaper. The incredible Ford GT is one, and the BMW Z8 presented here is the other.

While itÂ’s hard to argue with the opinion that the Ian Callum designed Aston Martins are the most beautiful cars of this generation, I feel the Z8 deserves the spot at the top. While BMWÂ’s goal was to build a car that looked like a modern day 507, and it did capture the grace of that car, the proportions and aggressive stance made it something of a modern Bavarian 427 Cobra. And thereÂ’s not a bad line on the car, itÂ’s wonderful from any angle, an achievement very few cars can claim. From the retro interior with the banjo steering wheel, to the neon taillights, I love everything about it. Plus, it powered by the 4.9 liter V8 from the E39 M5, so itÂ’s got that going for it. Simply superb.

Cruising tune of the week:

For the Moronettes:

For the Morons:

And a bonus pic:

Please feel free to send any complaints or commendations to us at Nied's Dead Horse and Countrysquire.

4 It's a shame about the Vipers.  One never likes to see 100 plus thousand dollar perfectly good cars being crushed.  I had a boss that had a Red Viper.  Scary fast it was.  You would be going 80 miles an hour before it even felt like you were moving.  His kid crashed it and he didn't replace it.

13 The crushing of the Vipers appears to be a mix of lawyers and donating to idiots.
They had to pay out million dollar settlements because a couple of the non street legal vipers had been involved in accidents on the street.

16 I'm sure you NE car buffs know about it, but if you ever find yourself around Cape Cod, The Heritage Museum and Gardens in Sandwich has a world class collection of antique cars. Went a few times a kid, haven't been in decades. That Rolls reminds me of some of their cars.

Posted by: Lincolntf at March 08, 2014 11:29 AM (ZshNr)

17 Not so fast on the Vipers. I read a story that said Chrysler/Fiat denied that there had been any joy riding and that they had NOT been legally liable for millions of bucks. I'm not sure that "reason" isn't made up. IMO they should just donate the cars to the respective schools to do with as they see fit and take the write off. Most of the schools would likely sell them for a tidy sum.

21 As far as the pot laws and driving under the influence goes, unless and until someone comes up with a valid impairment test, this will be an ongoing clusterf%^$. If you smoke a joint today and two weeks from now thc can be detected in your blood you are technically DUI. Only an idiot or someone who has never smoked pot would believe you're still impaired.

Posted by: Weirdflunky at March 08, 2014 11:32 AM (s0pAz)

22 I think they should just leave the vipers somewhere with the keys in the ignition. By accident. Like, for example, my driveway. I'd figure out something to do with one.

26 I saw that thing on the Vipers earlier this week.  The speculation was that Chrysler had been sued following a wreck with one of those involved and they were doing this for liability reasons.  Chrysler denied it but gave no other reason.  Its a damn crying shame.

29 Funny there's a Z8 there - I was just looking at them online last night. The prices were supposed to go down in theory. (getting the wants for a convertible). I guess they're still hovering around $100k.

However, one of the most beautiful cards ever produced IMHO was actually for sale on ebay motors - I never see them. The Alfa Romeo Montreal. Very, very tempting. An odd cream color though.

She was so excited to finish and get a change to work and she failed the drug test. It came back positive for heroin. I knew it was a false positive because this lady simply didn't do drugs. Showed up for work all the time, on time, worked, etc. Not a junkie or even part time user of anything. She didn't even drink. I asked her if she'd eaten anything with poppy seeds on it. Yep, she'd had a couple of bagels covered with them. That will return a false positive on a drug test. I felt so bad for her. 53 Let's see, all my comments in one shot... Vipers - if there is one production car of the last thirty years - fast as hell, squirrelly as hell, and utterly free of nanny gadgets - you don't want an untutored 18yo male driving around, that's it. Phantom 1 - my favorite Roller. The Springfield cars were LHD and had a 3-speed transmissions IIRC. BMW Z8 - ah, the flawed beauty. Designed when BMW was still figuring out how to do aluminum structures. Shock top-mounts didn't spread the load enough causing the mount towers to 'dome' and deform the structure. First sign was that your hood shutline was starting to get wavy, it'd happen in back too. As I recall once the body structure was damaged it couldn't be fixed, BMW spent a bunch of money rebuilding cars on new bodies. Raquel - so what is that she's leaning on? Ferrari? Iso?

Any drug test that does not contain minimum detectable and minimum positive limits is a problem.  There was a story about a woman who had her newborn taken away by the hospital when she "failed" a drug test.  Just like the example above, the test came back "positive" for opiates.  Turns out, it was barely above the minimum detectable, and caused by poppy seeds.

It was well below any result from heroin / morphine / oxy.  After going through the courts, she got her kid back after months of separation.  And a couple million from the hospital for the hell she went through.  If you ever run into something similar, get a lawyer fast, and compare their test to the federal regs for drug tests (DOT ?40CFR? or Nuclear 10CFR26).  And sue the hell out of the idiots if they screwed up.

77 @68 - The Duesenberg Model J was Marie Antoinette's cake. It was big and impressive and fairly fast, but as a Depression-era product it was very much a 1%-er "rub your face in this" product, kinda like having the latest Gulfstream product today, it wasn't a Duesenberg in the classic racer sense, and Fred died in one. I'm much more a fan of the early Duesenberg Model A, which was a product of their race-car engineering at a time when they were really competitive.

87 It was big and impressive and fairly fast, but as a Depression-era product it was very much a 1%-er "rub your face in this" product, kinda like having the latest Gulfstream product today, it wasn't a Duesenberg in the classic racer sense, and Fred died in one. Yeah its really tempting. I really want one that was done up, or at least a frame and body thats ready for a V8. A stock one would need a ton of work. I would basically be lifting the body off the frame, keeping the body, and tossing out the rest. At the same time a restored original is kinda cool, even though a frigging moped could beat it.

94 Thanks Mike, had to do a two stage search.

First eBay for Ferrari tail lights.  Then once I had one that looked right, a Bing image search for that model of Ferrari.  And I got treated to many front end or side shots.  Or even worse the Ferrari 330 GT Vignale station wagon.  And I thought a VW 412 was ugly.  But I found that one picture and voila.

Guess it boils down to what you want.

1)  Classic:  The one I drove was vintage and a bear to steer, esp in the Blue Ridge foothills.  The man who owned it found parts fairly easily thru dedicated suppliers.  He loved it; but you're right --  over 35-40 mph, the old girl was impossible to control.

2) HotRod:  Dropping a V8 in her frame is asking a lot.  I'm sure you know that will require major, major upgrades.

Whatever you do, she's a beauty

Yeah thats the problem. I couldn't bring myself to do anything but leave it original, but then its not the car I really want. At the same time it would be really cool to have an original. I could restore it fairly easy. The only thing I would have to send out is upholstery. I can do all the mechanical stuff including a lot of the machine work for the engine, and I can do the paint and body. Its been sitting in a garage for a billion years, so its not all fucked up. Its a 5 window. I haven't seen the actual car yet, but according to my friend that told me about it it was parked running after the dude who owned it died, and the dude's son just let it sit in the garage forever. Its all intact. It would be a fairly easy restore if thats the case.

114 There was one Redbug- I think the only survivor-- at the museum on Jekyll. As I recall it had two storage batteries- starting batteries for gas powered cars- at the back end. Open air. Basically a frame, front & back axles, and open seats. A fair WX car, for sure. But the "millionaire's Village was so small it was probably handy for tooling around it.

115 It doesn't sound like many of you understand what a prototype car is. Let me lay our a possible process for you. 1) Someone in engineering comes up with a unique car line. 2) They send one of the guys over to the factory to pick up a practice specimen. 3) The line is running Minivans today, so they pull the next one out the door, off the line, and drive it to the engineering building. 4) Engineering hack off the unimportant body panels, and the new car becomes "Proto #1" and the old, original Minivan numbers are written off. 5) Hand fabricated body panels are make and attached to Proto #1. 6) Some interior panels are created to cover sharp edges, so no one gets cut on the sharp edges. 7) Someone decides Proto #1 would be fun with a V10 motor, so they send a guy over to the truck line to get a motor, trans and all the required items to make it run. Proto # 1 undergoes a drive train swap. Special one off brackets and such are made. Isn't hot rodding fun? 9) Proto #1 undergoes some refinements so everything works like one would expect it to. 10) Proto #1 undergoes years of testing and refinements and is then parked in the storage lot for a few years, because its concept has become a production line product. 11) Someone decides to build a new version of the production car Proto #1 has become, so instead of starting from scratch, Proto #1 is sent back to the engineering building and more modifications are made. 12) Through the years, Proto #1 has been modified enough it looks like a production vehicle, and the engineering has been on the leading edge, so Proto #1 gets sent to a trade school as a learning tool. When it becomes obsolete as a training tool, they are to send it back to get destroyed. 13) 10 years after the donation, some punk kid decides to take Proto #1 out for a joy ride, and violates the terms of the training tool contract, and Proto #1 is recalled (along with all the other Proto series experimental cars). Now some people think the car, that was never intended to be anything but an experiment, is suppose to be something special and warrants being saved? The Vipers being discussed are based on a chassis that was built in 92, modified with a fiberglass body hung on it, powered by a production line drive train that may or may not have been intended to be installed in that chassis. There were probably several modifications and test features that were never intended to be in a production vehicle, (this was an experiment, why not try different things?) some of which may have been discovered to be dangerous. As a prototype vehicle, it never had to face safety, crash testing, or emission standards. The parts installed could have come from several years of production parts, and from several different production line car parts, many of which may have been modified to fit. Probably nearly none of the parts on it are even close to what the similar parts on the production car are in shape, fit, or quality. Its intended purpose to to see if it would be appealing to the general population and if it was even a feasible concept. It has served its purpose. Now let it die in peace. Gene

116 Good for Allen Swift. How on Earth do you own a car for 78 years? I'd do it if I could. I bought my beloved 1991 Toyota Corolla station wagon in 1999, so I've only owned it for 15 years. It runs great but the body is rotting away. My mechanic pretty much told me that it won't pass inspection next time, and he's bent over backwards to pass it the last two years. I don't want to have to get rid of it. Buying another car is kind of a hit-or-miss proposition. I could end up with a lemon. I'd rather stick with what I have.

(Consider this: CNN found that Washington's limit of five nanograms of THC per milliliter of blood wasn't nearly high enough to negatively impact driving.) The study's authors caution that their findings don't indicate that the drivers were impaired from pot at the time of their accident, only that they had used pot sometime in the recent past." If only there was some objective test of behavior that could settle the question, like, driving a car without being in an accident.

158 It really does feel very weird to drive without a seat belt on anymore.  Having grown up before they were invented, I think about that sometimes.  When I was a little kid, the "restraint" was the parent's arm slashing across your little body as they stood on the brakes.  Didn't hurt me any, although apparently I once flew into the dashboard of the Hudson.  No harm, no foul, I turned out perfect.

161 Lap belts were all that were in cars till the 90's?

I once had a wreck because my lap belt wasn't fully buckled and it came undone. I slide across the bench seat and lost my hands on the steering wheel.

Yes, I was in a curve and I was speeding.

My 70 Chevelle, which I purchased new in 1970 and still have, has both lap belts AND shoulder harnesses. A separate buckle for each. Rear seats only have lap belts. 676,000 miles on the clock over the 36 years I drove it. Wore the belts and shoulder harnesses religiously. Purchased an '06 Mustang GT in March of 2006 and registered the Chevelle as an Historic Vehicle. Joins my 57 Chevy Belair in that department.

165 I have found penetrating oils to be mostly worthless. I still give them a try, hoping for the best. As noted, make sure you're using a six-point socket. If penetrating oil doesn't work (and provided you let it soak in a while, it probably will), heat it with a propane torch (not red hot) then cool it with a little water. The expansion and contraction of the metal should help loosen it up.

166 Friend in high school had a 1973 Caprice coupe with the biggest engine under the hood (so his grandparents could tow their Airsteam).

Shoulderbelts were there, though you had to put them on the buckle for the lapbelt.  The acceleration that car could do was - suck-you into-the seat-and hold-you-there - unbelievable.  That old car could drop Trans Am's into the rearview mirror.

Then there was the '77 Monte Carlo we got in 1983 from my grandparents.  It was a Florida car and really good.  And somehow and for whatever reason grandpa had the biggest engine available for that car placed under that hood.*  Straight line acceleration on Telegraph Road - the Monte was a champ.  Of course doing that meant watching the fuel gauge go left like you were flushing a toilet full of gasoline.

212 First of all, this is a Jeep story, so those of you innocently cursed with the obsolete unreliable old things, please put them up for sale, because there are terminally stupid people standing in line to get one. Find a nice red Rodeo. And now,

At the real Jeep plant (North Cove Blvd), a building that had once housed the offices of Mather Spring Works became the Jeep House Museum. The fun of it was, it was co-operated by a retired line supervisor and a retired union steward, who had obviously put their differences behind them. They were the honey badgers of museum curators. Yeah, we got a Willys-Knight sleeve-valve, downstairs. Sure it runs. Now, there's no venting in here, and there's no exhaust manifold on it, so everybody just hold your breath, and when I shut 'er down, get outside real fast, and we'll talk. It was like that.

And next door was a vacant building that had once been the Design Dept. Barney Roos's desk was there, and a couple other guys who went on (or back) to more famous projects. In the back of the design building were some prototypes. The Cherk that held the 4WD LSR. Small airport fire trucks. Mules.

The curators had let it out that when Jeep was Kaiser's, this neat stuff was spread all over the installation, plus Willow Run. "And then we brought in a new owner," is how they call changing hands there. The AMC thing didn't bother them too bad until Renault bought in, and then, it seemed, every time a high-ranking French corporate official stopped by, they'd end up minus one prototype or Whippet or Knight Concert Grand. Then it was Chrysler, who raided the collection for their own museum up the road. The Germans were the worst. Well aware they'd lost the war because North Cove was out of range of their bombers, they took the lot, and dynamited the plant, museum and all.

And so. It isn't "Chrysler" who wants those Vipers. That firm is now known as Fiat, and Fiat owns what was once Ferrari. Enzo Ferrari said, "The Americans do not need a sports car. They have the Jeep." But scores of auto reviewers said, "The Viper is an old-fashioned American V8 that beats a Ferrari." And there is no way that the Ferrari Owners Club is going to stand for that.

216 @190 - actually, I do my own work on several German products and have for just about a couple decades, though none of them a Porsche. The key to owning a 'real' Porsche (that is, the kind denoted by PJ O'Rourke as 'ass-engined Nazi slot cars') is to own a lift. There's a lot of stuff that has to be done from underneath and trying to do so on ramps is just flat humiliating. Same applies to most mid-engine cars out there, certainly the Ferraris.

The remainder of Harrah's collection was sold off to fund the new facility.

And there was a COMPLETE library of tech specs for every detail of every car.

Each car on display was totally ready to roll.
Gassed up and completely functional as it was when it rolled off the original assembly line.

Nothing like it in my memory.  What a wonder it was to see these cars being carefully restored on a hospital clean factory floor.

Too bad you were too young to appreciate the library and the craftsmanship that was enriched and enlivened by a true innovator -- Mr Harrah.

The museum was more than a label "stuck" in front of car.  In your teens, did you realize anyone could climb into one of those cars and "start it up and drive off"

I'd say you were deprived of that experience and question your credentials to call anybody out who appreciates the preservation of historical art and craftsmanship.

Too bad.

237 Clearly most of you know NOTHING about the auto industry, EPA and crash regulations and a host of other alphabet agencies that come into play when building a car. The car was NEVER meant to be on the road, period. It is not to be used on public roads in any shape, manner or form after the test period and the fallout if so much as one makes it on the street and the feds find out is horrendous. The car should have crushed just like thousands of other have been crushed over the decades after the prototype stage has passed. Chrysler did a nice thing donating them but the bottom line there is a huge liability and the EPA can lower the boom at anytime. The smart thing the school should of done was to keep their mouth shut. Now that this is all public the EPA for sure will move in to see the cars crushed and any donation programs are now at risk due to all the press. Chrysler is not going to risk being fined into oblivion and the Feds crawling up their ass every time vehicles goes to get certified.

When you say the Henry Ford museum had "no interpretation or context", what do you mean?

Just the presence of the Phaeton was a revelation to many visitors.  In the day--as they like to say in 2014

239 @Stringer

By the way, what is a museum but a "library" of artifacts we can no longer use or enjoy.

240 gdonovan, you act like you enjoy living in a country like that.
I'm sure we all respect your knowledge of What Is Not Allowed, but frankly, I'd just as soon gut every one of those agencies like the pigs they are.

Friend owns Viper.  Gave me a ride.  Street legal.  Is he supposed to trash it?

Benny Parsons (late NASCAR champ) drove one when he worked the Daytona 500 in 1995.
Is that yellow Viper to be crushed?

242 NCWoof, I mean it was glorious, alive, and glowing from within as if Barney Oldfield had just stepped away for a minute and would be right back.

No kiddie shows, no fake backdrops, built-up presentations, or apologies.
Every one of them ran at least once a year. Real cars for real car guys.

243 "gdonovan, you act like you enjoy living in a country like that." Who said I did? People whining without knowing the other side of the coin get on my nerves. Chrysler signed an agreement with the EPA- If the vehicle is out of compliance its gets crushed, full stop end of discussion. This happens thousands of times a year and everyone is getting their panties in a wad because its a Viper. I'm a car guy with several Mopars (very easy to check) and like Vipers as much as the next guy, but this is putting Chrysler at huge risk. "I'm sure we all respect your knowledge of What Is Not Allowed, but frankly, I'd just as soon gut every one of those agencies like the pigs they are." I'd make the budget of the EPA $1 if it was up to me, it enrages me the GOP does nothing. One comes to the conclusion that they must ok with it which enrages me even more.

Wish you said that clearly 1st time.  But there you go.

245 "Friend owns Viper. Gave me a ride. Street legal. Is he supposed to trash it?" Hello (tap tap) is this thing on? The Viper in question is a PROTOTYPE. Not a production Viper. Its a hack job used for mocking things up. It has not been crash tested nor in emissions compliance. See post #115

246 Please read the article posted! "Part of the contract with the donated Viper reads that it will be destroyed if the company orders it to be." "The pre-production vehicle is not legal for street use and was never meant for resale. It has no emissions controls or speed limiters." "Chapman said he was told by a company official that the destruction of 93 vehicles is the result of two educational Vipers that “got loose” and were involved in accidents, costing parent company Fiat millions of dollars."

249 Speaking of cars worth now what they were new:  add another one onto your list:

Land Rover Defender 90

Had one in my garage back in '94.  But gf then said it was too 'butch'.  Ended up with a GT convertible instead.

In '94, they wanted 28k for one, two tops, fully loaded for bear hunting.  Today, you'd be very lucky to find one under 36k (as long as it wasn't wrecked or abused).  Many go for upwards of 40k.  Because import stupidity and Dept of Highway Robbery er, Safety.

The day kennedy was shot.   I walked into one of my college freshman classes.  The girls were all crying.  I asked, "Which one?  There were so many."  After that I was public enemy number one.
