Shooting Begins in Simferopol, Crimea; Ukrainian Soldier Killed by Russian Fire
— Ace

Great.

Oh, by the way:

Sometimes I'm an idiot. You knew that. But lately I've been seeing "Simferopol" in the news and I've been assuming it's one of those "let's change a city's name to reflect actual pronunciation" things, like Peking becoming Beijing, or Bombay becoming Mumbai.

So I thought Simferopol was just Sevastapol.

It's not. They're near each other, but Simferopol is a different city, more inland than Sevastapol, and is the capital of the Crimean region.

Lately I might have written "Sevastapol" when news reports said "Simferopol."

Romney... has written an op-ed on all of this called "The Price of Failed Leadership."

Why, across the world, are America's hands so tied?

A large part of the answer is our leader's terrible timing. In virtually every foreign-affairs crisis we have faced these past five years, there was a point when America had good choices and good options. There was a juncture when America had the potential to influence events. But we failed to act at the propitious point; that moment having passed, we were left without acceptable options. In foreign affairs as in life, there is, as Shakespeare had it, "a tide in the affairs of men which, taken at the flood leads on to fortune. Omitted, all the voyage of their life is bound in shallows and in miseries."

...

Able leaders anticipate events, prepare for them, and act in time to shape them. My career in business and politics has exposed me to scores of people in leadership positions, only a few of whom actually have these qualities. Some simply cannot envision the future and are thus unpleasantly surprised when it arrives. Some simply hope for the best. Others succumb to analysis paralysis, weighing trends and forecasts and choices beyond the time of opportunity.

President Obama and Secretary of State Clinton traveled the world in pursuit of their promise to reset relations and to build friendships across the globe. Their failure has been painfully evident: It is hard to name even a single country that has more respect and admiration for America today than when President Obama took office, and now Russia is in Ukraine. Part of their failure, I submit, is due to their failure to act when action was possible, and needed.

Eh. This is an easy analysis to make for anyone criticizing any president: You allege, vaguely, that things might have gone better had you been in charge. You're proclaiming your relative competency versus your opponent's relative incompetency, and as this is all counter-factual, it's impossible to disprove.

Obama, by the way, constantly did this to Bush (well, he did it to McCain, pretending that McCain was in fact George W. Bush), just saying "Hey, we're smarter, if we were in charge you wouldn't even have had to confront these difficult choices."

The argument is easy and a bit vague, so I don't put a lot of stock into it.

But given that Obama did the same thing, I do enjoy that the same tactic is being used against him.

The majority of Crimeans really did vote to join the RF, and the RF accepted their application yesterday.

Any Ukrainian soldier there would have been ordered out at some point ... and, as much as Ukrainians and Russians don't like each other, would have been ordered to tell the RF troops to sod off.

And now we are involved because Princess Obama is still butthurt over having been diplomatically pwned in Syria.

55 At this point, I imagine the new Ukrainian President is trying to figure out how much of Ukraine they can have any hope of defending. If Putin decides to roll into Eastern Ukraine, there is really no telling how far he might go. They would have some hope of holding the Dnieper line in the north of Ukraine, but the region on the south west bank near Odessa is heavily Russian speaking. It would not shock me if Kharkov, Dnipropetrovsk, Odessa, Donetsk, and Zaporizhia all ended up in Russia; stretching all the way to Moldava.

The ballot had two choices:  Let Russia annex Crimea, or let the Crimean Parliament decide what to do.  There was no "tell Russia to sod off" option.

Don't mistake the rest of the world as being willing to lap up what your old Soviet masters try to pass off as the truth.  The reality is no fair election in this circumstance would yield a 96.7% vote.  The reality is the vote was rigged in favor of the Russians from day one, and the reality is you are either a dupe for believing it, or a dishonest tool for trying to insist others believe it.

Nah. If someone can't be bothered to look up the actual demographics, I'll not bother arguing with him.

--------

OK, clown, as if demographics make any difference if the vote itself is rigged.

Per USA Today, the ethnic Russian population of Crimea tops out at 60%.  Pretty far below that figure you quoted.

Now that that's out of the way, here is actual fact:

The ballot had two questions with one checkbox beside each question.  The first question was "Are you in favour of the reunification of Crimea with Russia as a part of the Russian Federation?"  *any* mark in the checkbox next to that question is taken as a "yes" answer.  There is no checkbox for a "no" answer.

The second question was "Are you in favour of restoring the 1992 Constitution and the status of Crimea as a part of Ukraine?"  However, this is not the status quo option...this is a question as to whether Crimea will, under the 1992 Constitution, become a semi-autonomous part of Ukraine with its own legislature and ability to determine allegiance with whatever entity that legislature decides.  In other words, a longer path to annexation by Russia.  And again, any mark in the single checkbox next to that question is taken as a "yes."

Any ballot with no marks next to either question was tossed out as "spoiled."  In other words, you had to vote yes to one of the questions, either of which lead to annexation.

The vote was rigged.

For instance, Putin is dependent on the price of oil remaining over a certain level to prop up his thugocracy.  We can quite easily do lots in that area.  We drill baby drill.  We frack everywhere.  We give the Euros fracking technology.  We leverage our relationship with the Saudis to produce more.  We pass Keystone.  We work with the Canadians to ship more out.  Because if the price of oil drops below $90/barrel, Putin is fucked.

And that's just for starters.  The western Siberian oil fields are starting to tap out.  Putin can't get the eastern fields up and running without capital and tech from the west...which we can deny him.  Russia's production falters, and we're right there to pick up the slack.  Russia's already a consolation member of the BRICs and they don't have a vibrant economy anyway, so whatever disruption to oil happens fucks Russia more than it does us.

And all that is for starters.  We freeze Russian assets in the west.  We prohibit any and all tech transfers.  And since our creditors are more patient than Russia's, we deploy lots of war materiel with our European allies, forcing Russia to keep up in a game it cannot win with dirt-cheap oil.

No, a shooting war isn't the only option, nor is it the best one.  We have much better cards to play.

To close, save your propaganda shit for your home audience.  Americans aren't buying it, comrade.

298 "let's change a city's name to reflect actual pronunciation" things, like Peking becoming Beijing, or Bombay becoming Mumbai. -- ace confessions of ignorance Mumbai was the 3000 year old ancient name, revised by the Brits to be Bombay. The Bombay Presidency was a province of British India. It was first established at Surat in the 17th century as a trading post for the English East India Company, but it later grew to encompass much of western and central India, as well as part of the Arabian Peninsula and areas later included in Pakistan. Bombay Presidency along with Bengal Presidency and Madras Presidency were the three major centres of British India Company/State power. (Talk about expansionist-colonial fascist corporatism, find the Brits doing it first.) Peking from Beijing (3000 yr old city) may be a similar story of the English colonialists fabricating another city name for their own reference in China. Anyway, "Jing" is "Capital" for example, Nanjing is "southern capital". Beijing was a provincial city in northern China. The third emperor of the Ming Dynasty, Yongle, changed the city's name to Beijing in 1403 and gave the northern city co-capital status alongside Nanjing. Beigjing served as capital for five dynasties.

That's going to depend   on   how and where they used the nuke.   I don't know what our   nuclear response protocols are   now that    the Cold War is  over,   but once upon a time I'm pretty sure     any     kind of   nuclear launch by the USSR would have    required a    corresponding response from us.

342 _______________________________

Ace,

It may be an easy and unprovable argument to make that "I would have made better choices". But in the op-ed, Romney is careful not to say that his better choices would have necessarily led to better outcomes.
Rather Romney is making a preponderance argument. Taken in the aggregate, Romney's choices would have led to generally better foreign affairs for the U.S.

But except for Obama sycophants (of which the left overflows), is there anyone who really doubts that.

Romney's argument is less, "I would have done a very good job", and more, "It's hard to have done as wretched a job as Obama."

That Obama has 'led' (from behind - and turned around) a disastrous foreign policy is evident.
Romney's piece is primarily a broad but accurate (and quite gentle) dissection of that disaster.

It's less Buyer's Remorse and more The Emperor Failed to Put On Clothes - but let's hope (for ALL our sakes) that he figures out how!

Actually I found Romney's comment very pursuasive - Obama fumbles and bumbles whenever it comes time to act, and routinely fritters away any and all advantages he might have had.  He always lunges for the steering wheel after the car has gone over the cliff.

Look at obamacare - there were numerous hints that there was a monumental cluster-fark coming.  The Republicans offered him a gift  - delay the individual mandate a year.  He refused...then a few months later after the disasterous roll out he unilaterally declares the same thing.  He could have "compromised" with the Republicans and avoided a hugely embarassing incident, but like everything else he simply lets problems happen and then desperately tries to fix things after they have failed.

I don't think that they would be up for taking over.  For one thing it is a long way from there to here and I am not sure that they really have the force projection capability to do that at this time.

What would be in Russia's interest, though would be either a civil war or for the United States to break up into several component parts.  If I were Putin, I would let it be known to every governor that Russia will supply him with a couple of dozen nukes if he wanted to secede.  It would certainly suit Putin if the United States were divided into several mutually hostile nuclear armed independent nations.

Hell, for all I know, this is Putin and Obama's ultimate long term goal.  What would Obama be doing differently if it were his plan?

515 Romney, WSJ: "A large part of the answer is our leader's terrible timing. In virtually every foreign-affairs crisis we have faced these past five years, there was a point when America had good choices and good options. There was a juncture when America had the potential to influence events. But we failed to act at the propitious point; that moment having passed, we were left without acceptable options." OK. Consider well two points Romney misses. 1) US was embroiled in Bush Wars designed to be never-ending wars when Obama took office. Romney fails to lay out what Obama SHOULD have done; extricate the US from Afghanistan or Iraq sooner? Hell if that's Romney's position. 2) US via Hillary/Obama instigated the Arab Spring and launched US (as if NATO) wars of aggression against the governments and peoples of Egypt and of Libya, namely. As a result, those peoples friendly to the West and/or to secular governance were slaughtered. (Along with indigenous Christian populations under genocide by US foreign policy in league with China's -- in the authoritarian grasp for global corporate monopoly on economies.) Ask Romney is he was for or against Mubarak's sooner than later removal from office. (I was for it before I was against it after the fact...) Remember that Mubarak said he was leaving (sure, heard that before); but if he were removed immediately, that the Muslim Brotherhood WOULD take over Egypt. Now consider: Mubarak's son had been working behind the scenes over a decade to modernize Egypt's ways and means to earning a Middle Class living without resorting ONLY to joining the Egyptian Military, that institution comprising the entire wealth of Egypt, top brass top power and top wealth. All of the younger Mubarak's advancements in broadening the business base in Egypt to encourage a large Middle Class comparable to the Americans post-WWII coined "upwardly mobile" was destroyed by US foreign policy under the US guise as if "spreading democracy" -- as if the "Arab Spring" were anything but a ruse. So far as Romney's opinion on anything on foreign policy? (He loves him some French.) I doubt he's different than John McCain "Bomb5 Iran" or Rick Santorum "I'd Attack China!" Yes, Romney would have to ask his advisers, namely Jon Huntsman from China, and of course Bibi Netanyahu for the gospel of Zionism truth about anything in the Middle East (as if there's no excessive bias found in all sides of that wax ball). "Months before the rebellion began in Syria in 2011, a foreign leader I met with predicted that Assad would soon fall from power." So Bibi's a false prophet, Mitt? "As the rebellion erupted, the time was ripe for us to bring together moderate leaders who would have been easy enough for us to identify, to assure the Alawites that they would have a future post-Assad, and to see that the rebels were well armed." Jesus, where to begin? "for us to bring together moderate leaders who would have been easy enough for us to identify" -- rrriiiiiighhhht. Just like all the "good" rebels in Afghanistan (Reagan's heroes) and the "good" Iraqi Army and Police that we trained, and who thanked us by killing those Americans and Brits remaining instead of leaving immediately so the fundamentalism could begin in earnest without eyes from the West invading their privacy. Romney's always AFTER the fact offering a coulda shoulda woulda if you'd only elected Obamalite message, we could be swirled peas already. "The time for securing the status-of-forces signatures from leaders in Iraq and Afghanistan was before we announced in 2011 our troop-withdrawal timeline, not after it." Wake Up! Karzai could not care less that our government "made him". Whatever "signatures" and "timeline" hardly matter to these leaders, when these puppets that the US installs cut their strings in order to be a "real boy" Pinnochio, free of Uncle Sam and NATO and whoever else would dictate rather than submit to Islam. As if Karzai kept any agreement he made with Bush who installed the "Karzai" (suicidal to the US) Rules of Engagement. "Why are there no good choices? From Crimea to North Korea, from Syria to Egypt, and from Iraq to Afghanistan, America apparently has no good options." Pushing our friend Mubarak "to take rapid and bold steps toward reform, as did Jordan's king, might well have saved lives and preserved the U.S.-Egypt alliance." As if the US State Dept. wasn't pushing Mubarak via Hillary (media matters) and US news correspondent "I demand a face to face interview right now!" Amanpour. Mubarak WAS in transitional reform measures. So what the hell does Romney mean by "rapid and bold steps" as if by snapping his fingers, Mubarak could alter all Egyptians' minds into peaceful conformity and bliss. Pfft. "Why, across the world, are America's hands so tied?" -- Let Donald Rumsfeld remind you, Mitt. Carter, GHWB, Clinton, and GWB each cut back US Military size by design. Rumsfeld/Cheney pounded for a smaller US Military capable of only maintaining two simultaneous war fronts. OK? So only having enough for TWO fronts, and being ordered to being wars on TWO fronts simultaneously, we didn't have "more" for all the subsequent interventionist wars of aggression "dispensing democracy and death" that the same old idiotic neoconservatives in America keep screaming for more: to go attack Iran and China like we did Egypt and Libya...or something. Where is sanity? Not there. The Price of Failed Leadership, yep. Plenty of that going around. "President Obama and Secretary of State Clinton traveled the world in pursuit of their promise to reset relations and to build friendships across the globe." Mitt, WTF "to build friendships across the globe" does THAT mean, really? Hillary for Obama for the USA: "We Came, We Saw, We Killed, bwahahahaha." Romney is joining the "Miss Me Yet" ranks with GWB. They had their shots. Face the way the cookie crumbled and quit crying over spilt milk.

525 511. JackStraw, this isn't for you, only to the 'why support Palin but not like Mitt' affinity comparison. Characteristically, Mitt is staying stuck on juvenile stupid: "You can't do that!" private school goody two shoes while forcing down a peer, giving him the haircut he "deserved" on his honor. Mitt is chiding Obama for being late to the "what we ought to do" decision making process. Mitt's ALWAYS after the fact acting as if he's sharing a revelation from God to save the world, when all Romney is doing (in his own fashion) is the same as Obama. Namely, Mitt repeats himself, expecting that THIS TIME people will think better of the same old same old deceitful salesman of USED and abusive propaganda. "Trust me." ack Palin dishes out Egg/Ham snark v. Obama to band voters with camaraderie spirit. For all her "charm" she should have taken the advice Margaret Thatcher took when entering politics. Learn how to modulate your voice in a rounded persuasive tone and for emphatic points, for strong volume, use the diaphragm full breath control (you're laughing at what pops to mind) without "shrieking". I don't follow Palin's career so much as to occasionally notice while traversing news items that she travels and researches global regions and meets with reputable international figures, which prior to her VP campaign hardly applied to her Alaskan public service. So she knows a lot more now than before; she hasn't stagnated. Her "take" on matters remains firmly vested First Principles neoconservative a la Fred Thompson's platform -- don't ask for something (war) that would do more harm than good. Look to the far future, considering every ramification, especially recognizing negative results possible before jumping onto any agenda bandwagon. (If I were pining for what should have been, imagine a Fred Thompson and Sarah Palin administration following the Bush departure.) No matter how overwhelmingly the propaganda vibrations permeate our minds with "insanity for sanity" because war is peace, don't fall for that. Especially regard WHO PROFITS and who suffers, and AT WHAT COST to the drowning middle class around the world will each foreign policy measure rebound? Reconsider the legacy of "the greatest generation." (Brokaw) The end result of WWII? In a nutshell, fast forward. TODAY. Long story, the US brings home as many NAZIs as possible, and Washington with the Military begins in earnest mutating likewise over time. Authoritarianism as if the American Way of Life because the constitution is dead, dead like god. Long live the authoritarian post-constitutional era -- neoconservatives of both major political parties -- wittingly or not. Self deluded all the same.

528 mrp 4:19 and Nevergiveup Yes. But. "Just about everything we ought to do to protect our allies in Europe, is opposed by this Adminitration. The moth-balled F-22 program" 1. Why is the US Military STILL "protecting our allies in Europe" over half a century since WWII ended?! 2. The EU was formed specifically to compete against the USA. So why are US taxpayers providing our European competitors with free military defense? It isn't necessarily as if our European allies share the same views as Americans, either. 3. Interesting though predictable FAILURE. Too many cooks spoil the broth. The F-22 promo was propagandized to specifically "spread the wealth" or enrich French, British, German and Italian manufacturing firms in the "cooperative" division of sourcing/outsourcing for the NATO US F-22. Rather than trying to sell to EU or the rest of the world US F-35. Blame Bush, Cheney Rumsfeld. The writing was on the wall all along. Industry research and produce a design. Congress allocate tax funds to construct and test a prototype. Prove functional. Invest more allocation of tax funds for contract to manufacture X amount for a fleet. As soon as construction is under way and assembling begins with a few from the X amount, pull out the rug from beneath the contract. Repeat process... Our military contracts have never been fulfilled, though taxes have been raised to fund the unfulfilled contracts, each as they come along, and to fund the government military industrial complex. Top brass to Corporate Boards, "professionals" profit immessurably from this serial demise of our national defense. "Their careers are on the line." As if our troops' lives aren't. No spare parts for anything in storage. And most of our ships and aircraft life expectancy expired decades ago, before all this interventionist madness gone hog wild in the ME going global. Nothing new to this. It would be erroneous to place the blame on Obama except to the velocity he's driving us over the cliff. Promising us we'll fly. We're in the same boat "set up" as suicide bombers, or the kamikaze. I always said Bush sold us down the river. That was then, this is now. Down river, wayyyy down.

Yep, Mitt Romney clearly cheated by kicking everyone else's asses in the Republican nomination debates. What a cheater!! - He shouldn't have been aloud to even speak at those things! Am I right or am I right?

And then that part where Romney amassed an overwhelming number of delegates in the nomination process (he had over 1,570 and his next nearest rival, Santorum didn't have 250): that was obviously more pure cheating.
Any of the other nominees should have been allowed to secure the nomination by getting to 200. Romney should have been required to get 1,000,000 before he was considered. Damn cheater that was!

And you know else we know that Romney cheated in the Republican debates because he cheated again when he kicked Obama's ass in that first Presidential debate. Yep, pure cheating again.

I wonder how many people are smart enough to figure out that winning an election is not like winning a baseball game?
Unlike in a baseball game, the spectators (voters) get a massive (dare I say majority?) say in the victor.
You see, folks, voters are FREE to vote anyway they please. - They can even vote for blatant stupidity.
Just how do you think we got Obama in the first place, geniuses?
- Meh.

Posted by: _Dave_ at March 18, 2014 02:10 PM (07UzX)

530 Dave that snark fails because of the facts. Iowa's primary results were botched to deny Santorum momentum. Maryland simultaneously rubberstamped Romney's candidacy because they couldn't imagine he'd have a 30% rejection rate for submitted signatures, while denying Perry because they sampled his signatures and figured 50% were bad. Not to mention the bad faith displayed by such things as smearing Herman Cain as unprepared and a joke in December 2011 for saying he'd consult with the experts and develop an Afghan policy, which was Romney's "plan" as late as June 2012. Many of us observed how soft Mitt Romney was on Barack Obama compared to his work in the primaries.

And you are right, everyone who saw that first debate on domestic policy laughed at Romney for taking it easy on Obama.
Romney virtually laid down and let Obama walk all over him!

I'm with you, man. The best way to determine the Republican nominee is to stamp our feet, stick our fingers in our ears and complain about how "unfair" the process is!
We should always talk about how politics isn't "fair". - That's the winning ticket Every Single Time.

When they hear you whine, the voters are sure to be inspired to hand you the keys to the Oval Office.

I just feel so bad for all those Republican nominees because Romney so clearly cheated them out of the nomination.

I don't give a damn whether it's useful spin or not. The 2012 Republican primary was an exercise in political corruption that will only be equaled by what comes in 2016, with the new rules changes.

Chris,

In all honesty, if the 2012 nomination process was so traumatic for you to see Romney beat whoever your guy was that you have concluded that Romney is a crook and that there was grand Republican-establishment conspiracy at work in Iowa, etc.: then the trauma has warped your mind.

You have lost perspective.

I can respect that you think someone else would have fared better against Obama in the general.

But if you have concluded (based on the nomination process or anything else) that Romney is corrupt, then (at least on this particular topic): You Are Out To Lunch.

- And I, a fellow conservative, am just trying to alert you to that fact.

541 Romney is a pathetic loser who is now reduced to reposting op-eds. While Mr. Putin is bolstering his nation's pride, territory and viability, loser Romney sits on his couch and wonders: "what if i beez prezidents"?

I can only urge you to consider that the issues you cite that disturb you and cause you to cry "corruption" are nowhere near sufficient to amount to a credible argument that there was corruption.

I followed the nomination process too. I am familiar with all the issues you cite. I'm not going to relive them with you. They were not cases of corruption. Sometimes they were minor discrepancies. And sometimes they were failures by OTHER candidate's campaigns to do basic due diligence in competing for the nomination. None of these things were in anyway indications that Romney is a crook or even slightly corrupt.

It is plain that seeing Romney get the nomination was more than you could bare.
And that has caused you (and some others) to believe the fix was in.

Hopefully you will have clearer understanding in the next Republican nomination process. Or hopefully next time your preferred candidate will win.

Me? I'm in favor of Zombie Reagan 2016.

You know Chris, your post at #540 says it all doesn't it?

You really are bitter.

Do you think it hurts my feelings (or anyone else's) that you would call Romney a "loser"?
I have no personal connection to him. Nonetheless, I am quite sure this man you have described as a corrupt crook is doing quite well as human beings go.
A good, decent man who has achieved a great deal in his life.

You obviously have no idea how petty you sound in calling him a "loser".

Why don't you try to face this: the Republican nomination process for the 2012 presidential election really hurt/traumatized you. That's pretty clear.
And now as a result, you would like to 'hurt back' those who supported Romney.
- It's very petty, and it's very revealing of your character.

Oops, sorry about that. I just realized that comment #540 was made by someone else. - "Aristotle".

But that in itself is ironic, since the ancient Greek was about as far from being petty as humanly possible.

So let me respond to Air-Head-Stottle's idiot posting at #540.

You know, Air Head, only a true fantasist could read Romney's op-ed and imagine there is anything in it indicating that Romney was musing about 'what if' he had become president.

You know that, don't you?

Posted by: _Dave_ at March 18, 2014 03:11 PM (07UzX)

547 I'm not the one who posted at 540 If you want to imagine Mitt Romney is a great guy and state parties just happened to make errors that fell into his lap, OK. We will see when it happens to the next Anointed in 2016. >> And sometimes they were failures by OTHER candidate's campaigns to do basic due diligence in competing for the nomination. The corruption comes in when, finding that Rick Perry's camp had a 50% bad signature rate, they passed Mitt Romney without a check. Because he couldn't be assumed to have a bad signature rate as high as 33%. It's the refusal to consider the possibility that Mitt's campaign was as bad as Rick Perry's or Gingrich's that was corrupt.

Nope, apparently Air-Head at comment #540 is completely without a clue as to what the op-ed actually said.

-Sigh-

Alright, Air-Head, try reading it again, and see if you can do better.
You get a gold-star if you can do more than read the title.

I'm off to dinner.
- Adios.

550 Romney gave all your pathetic candidates a haircut, and now you want to cry about it. Suck it up, he beat your dream candidate in 2012, and he shaved your pussy head afterward. Don't kill yourself over it.

Wow, a whiff of _the man himself_ at #548. I suppose I am 'honored', sir.

It, after all, takes a 'special' kind of bravery to launch an attack by pretending to be someone smarter than yourself. But I suppose that must have felt safest.
No matter. I am honored to 'detect' your direct response, nonetheless.

Keep in mind that but one reason Plato is clearly superior to Aristotle is that Plato was first. (I'm sure you saw my post regarding the forms and God.)

The natural pressure to 'go wrong' was immense even for a mind as great as Aristotle's - after the first philosopher had gotten so much right. The need to be highly relevant (and therefore different) explains much.

Still, Aristotle did in fact discover syllogisms. - A superlative factor to the advancement of man's thought.
