A leftist Minneapolis City Council candidate Margarita Ortega took to social media to encourage those who "feel like burning shit down” to make sure they did it in wealthy areas, not in the "poor community.”

Originally reported by Alpha News, in a Facebook post screenshot Tweeted by the ‘Crime Watch Minneapolis account,’ Ortega said "Just a personal thought — just in case y’all feel like burning shit down, the poor community is not your oppressors. FYI — lake of the isles has more then [sic] needed and won’t be missed.”

In a follow up Tweet, Minneapolis Crime Watch say residents of the area have contacted the police and it is being considered a "credible threat.”

How many of the Chauvin jury will vote to convict him just because of the promised mayhem and destruction in the Twin Cities?

Just because you want something to be true and to work doesn't make it so. Or in this instance LOFGF'd.

Grocery chain Kroger said it closed down two California stores Saturday after the Long Beach City Council approved a COVID-19-related "hero pay” ordinance that increased wages by $4 per hour.

The pay increase, mandated in January, was for workers who were employed at pharmacies and retail stores with 300 or more employees in the Southern California city.

The move was announced earlier this year, but the Ralph’s and Food 4 Less—both operated by Kroger—were shut down on April 17, employees told local media outlets.

"As a result of the City of Long Beach’s decision to pass an ordinance mandating Extra Pay for grocery workers, we have made the difficult decision to permanently close long-struggling store locations in Long Beach,” said a spokesperson for Kroger several weeks ago. "This misguided action by the Long Beach City Council oversteps the traditional bargaining process and applies to some, but not all, grocery workers in the city.”

I know, I know. I'm supposed to feel bad for the employees who lost their jobs. But.... California has gone from nibbling on the edges of fiscal sanity to complete cannibalism.

Is the economy that bad? Did a generation of helicopter parents screw up their children that bad? Is student loan debt that crippling? Record 33% Of Young Americans Living With Parents.

The number of adults aged 18-34 living at home with their parents continues to accelerate to levels not seen in decades, according to Goldman Sachs, citing US Census Bureau data which found that just over 33% have returned to the nest.

And while real estate in major markets is booming, the percentage of young adults in the 'boomerang generation' - who leave the nest only to return years later - has taken a dive, as unemployment and punishing (self-inflicted) student debt has forced many younger Americans out of the housing market.

Since we are on the subject of living arrangements let's take a look at the next pipe dream over the horizon. 'Renting Is Terrible. Owning Is Worse.A third option is necessary: a way to rent without making someone else rich.'

A public-ownership rental option might solve this problem, at least in part. The foundation of the program would be quite simple: public ownership of housing, acquired or built with government loans—though run by local for-profit or nonprofit property managers—and rented at market prices. No saving for a down payment (or being given one by family) and no qualifying for a mortgage. The only requirements for participation in the public-ownership option would be (1) move in, and (2) pay rent.

As the loans were paid down, the equity would accrue to the tenants, minus the cost of operating and maintaining the building, administrative costs, and so on. Unlike rent-to-own programs, however, this option would never require that the tenant take out a mortgage. A renter would never truly "own” her unit. But she would claim a stake in the public portfolio of properties and be able to draw on that asset, perhaps in the form of monthly payments after a few years of renting, or larger dividends later in life, much like Social Security. The benefit could be transferred to any publicly owned apartment, allowing tenants to build wealth without being locked in place. After 35 or 40 years, a tenant might no longer owe any rent at all. There are many more things to say about the logistical details, and I have said them elsewhere, but that’s the core of the idea.

A data breach at a Christian crowdfunding website has revealed that serving police officers and public officials have donated money to fundraisers for accused vigilante murderers, far-right activists, and fellow officers accused of shooting black Americans.

In many of these cases, the donations were attached to their official email addresses, raising questions about the use of public resources in supporting such campaigns.

The breach, shared with journalists by transparency group Distributed Denial of Secrets, revealed the details of some donors who had previously attempted to conceal their identities using GiveSendGo’s anonymity feature, but whose identifying details the website preserved.

The beneficiaries of donations from public officials include Kyle Rittenhouse, who stands accused of murdering two leftwing protesters in Kenosha, Wisconsin, last August. Rittenhouse traveled from neighboring Illinois to, by his own account, offer armed protection to businesses during protests over the police shooting of Jacob Blake.

The last time I checked donating money to a cause is still a freedom under the First Amendment.

It’s About Time for Us to Stop Wearing Masks Outside
Briefly passing someone on the sidewalk just isn’t risky.

One of the last times I stepped outside my Brooklyn apartment without a mask on was in early spring 2020, just before the state issued a mask mandate. I remember because as my dog peed on a tree, a neighbor asked me pointedly where my mask was. Where I live, almost everyone wears a mask when they go outside. If a person sipping from an iced coffee with their mask pulled down approaches someone else on the sidewalk coming the other way, they will usually yank the mask back up, as if they’ve been caught partially dressed. The other day I noticed a woman sitting on a hill in the middle of a field with her face covered. There was no one near her.

Unfortunately spineless Karens are going to be with us for quite some time.

The ONT Musical Interlude

Howdy Mis Hum!

For ONT consideration -- On Sunday April 18, Rick Moranis (actor, comedian, musician, songwriter, writer and producer) will be celebrating his 68th birthday.  Not sure if you've ever featured Rick Moranis before.  Funny guy who also seems like a decent person.

From the wikipedia page about him:
"He appeared in the sketch comedy series Second City Television (SCTV) in the 1980s and several Hollywood films, including Strange Brew (1983), Ghostbusters (1984) and Ghostbusters II (1989), Little Shop of Horrors (1986), Spaceballs (1987), Honey, I Shrunk the Kids (1989, and its 1992 and 1997 sequels), Parenthood (1989), My Blue Heaven (1990), and The Flintstones (1994)."

On SCTV, he and Dave Thomas created a sketch called The Great White North and portrayed the characters Bob and Doug McKenzie. (H/T Doof)

Frat brothers at times have a bad reputation. But not tonight. Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day.

A house is where people live but a home is where people are loved. Sometimes, the bonds of family have no relation to biology. That’s why when a group of fraternity brothers learned their "second mom” needed help to retire, she didn’t even need to ask.
Jessie Hamilton worked as a cook at the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity house (affectionately known as Fiji) on the campus of Louisiana State University from 1982 to 1996. Though the single mom had three kids of her own, she treated the young men in her care like surrogate sons—listening to their worries, offering counsel, and even driving them to doctor’s appointments or ferrying them to the grocery store on occasion.
"I enjoyed doing it. They loved my cooking,” Hamilton told The Washington Post. "I was always there to talk things through with them. They’d come in the kitchen and sit on top of the counter and tell me their problems.”

APRIL 16--Moments after being released from custody, an Arkansas man yesterday stole a police car that was parked in front of the jail, earning him a return trip behind bars, cops say.

According to investigators, Cordell Coleman, 33, drove away from the Pulaski County jail around 2:40 AM in a marked Little Rock Police Department SUV. A police report notes that a surveillance camera recorded Coleman entering the unlocked 2018 Ford Explorer, which was parked near a jail sally port.

Coleman, pictured at right, had been released from custody following a public intoxication arrest a day earlier, records show.

The stolen vehicle had been driven to the jail by an officer who was assisting with the booking of a prisoner. "After completing the process, I returned to discover my patrol vehicle had been taken,” the cop reported.

Investigators quickly tracked the hot wheels to an apartment complex about 10 miles from the jail, where Coleman was found inside the vehicle. Coleman, who had been the last prisoner released from the jail, was arrested and eventually returned to the lockup.

13 Hey everybody. Hey ONT! Hey MisHum! Love Talking Heads!

MisHum, you might be interested to know I live within a short driving distance of both Kroger/Ralphs stores in Long Beach that were closed, and even used to occasionally shop in one of them (the Ralphs near Los Coyotes Diagonal). It's not very cheery to drive through neighborhoods full of empty storefronts, just one more reason why I hope I can leave CA before it's too late.

Got sad news today at the volunteer appreciation day.  Sweet Callie who got adopted last September had to be put down last week.  Her hip dysplasia finally did her in.  Poor sweet girl. But kudos to the college kid who adopted her and gave her final months tons of love and affection.  She sent us updates all the time and she really loved her.

He's the best right now. Never the less, Verstappen and his Honda powered car did win today. The Indycar season started today in Alabama. Alex Palou won. No, I don't know who that is either. When it is becoming obvious to the people being taken advantage of by those supposedly on "her side",  you know the grifting and grafting must be hitting astronomical proportions.    I haven't followed this situation with baited breath, but my impression is that the mom really just wants her daughter back, not be a political piñata.   So sad.

75 Margins in any grocery store are razor thin. Usually 1-2%. I saw a poll some time ago that most peopl thought that margins were 40-50%. I'd bet that not one of the Long Beach city council even bothered to find out what the true margins were prior to voting on this. Nope, but they got to feel good about themselves for a bit.

All. They're not sequestered until tomorrow, so they got to marinade in this weekend's "protests" and curfews, plus Mad Maxine whipping up the crowd yesterday.
It'll be appealed; for that and the prosecution's shitty game of delivering exhibits all the way up to the end of the defense presentation. It almost went mistrial over prosecution games Friday.

Agreed, I have a SIL that is on her 28th year teaching elementary, mostly 5th and 6th grade math, for those that have already fallen through the cracks and are essentially getting their last chance to catch up.    To get even a minor action approved takes a ridiculous amount of wasted time and effort to make it as difficult, and delay it as long as possible.

She loves to teach, she loves her kids, and their parents (mostly).  But she hates her bosses and the conditions the administration makes her go through to do her job successfully.   It is maddening, and she is one of the kindest, most level-headed people you would ever meet.   She's thinking again of taking early retirement.  With her resume, she could teach the last few years for a private school if she wanted to, for more money.

165 In regards to the Kroger story, they have a workers' union. An outside pay raise "award" like Long Beach wanted wouldn't be permitted anyway because it wasn't negotiated through the union. So Long Beach put a bunch of union workers out on the street when Kroger bailed instead of playing court games. Not even close to the Democrat Party of 1961....

216 I believe that story about the young folks living with their parents. The Obummer years were hard on young people wanting to get a good start on life after school. An eight-year course of deliberately hamstringing the U.S. economy will inhibit education and force young people to think small instead of thinking big about their futures. And after a few short years of good chances under Trump, Big Government avenged themselves upon him by shutting down the economy and then keeping it on barely functional levels for an entire year now. Yeah, the youngsters have a better chance of becoming a Wendy's manager that getting the job their university degree theoretically prepared them for having. Why haven't we overthrown the government yet?

Some blue cities have denied accepting any more early retirement from existing members.    They will only take a few per time period, no mass retirement allowed.
If you quit anyway, no pension for YOU!  It's hard to walk away from that, especially if you had planned that retirement money to be a cornerstone of your future subsistence.

The single-engine TBM Avenger is seen making a 'soft' landing in the shallow water south of Cocoa Beach in video filmed by a bystander. Footage shows the plane swooping low before coming to a skidding halt in the ocean not far from where people were swimming, sending spray spurting into the air. No one was injured in the incident, which came after the plane suffered a mechanical fault while taking part in theCocoa Beach Air Show.

Back in the seventies I knew this guy who was a teacher and whose wife was a teacher. He said that the smart thing to do was to live off one salary and invest the other. Long term investing can do great things. My parents raised six kids and left a very large estate, even though my dad was a skilled trade factory worker. My mom was very careful with spending, and knew how to invest. They also bought new cars with cash. They hated the idea of paying interest. Becoming a millionaire can be done, but it takes a lot of restraint in spending.

They got handed a shitty Fiat Currency, had their Faith tempted and twisted, were made false pariahs by "Long-March" Boomers and told to pull themselves up by the tattered bootstraps of Credentialism and Economic Inviability.
These are a Select Few, with enduring Skills and were sent down a Path, that I, myself, wonder if I could have ever navigated.  Being told to "Quit, Wash-Out and Ring that Bell" sounds good when the arrows seem to stream from everywhere.

Yep. Notice that they couched it in weasel words - suspending elective procedures. When most people hear elective procedures they think plastic surgery, not diagnostics like biopsies or mammograms. And how many young parents were so scared that they didn't take their kids for immunizations? The death toll of this lunacy will far outstrip the death toll from Covid. 302 Interestingly, necrophilia is not illegal in Alaska, as such. It falls under the heading of "misconduct with a corpse", which also covers a lot of other things.
I know this because about 20 years ago there was a high-profile case where a guy had sex with a severely intoxicated woman, who died at some point.
The case turned on whether she was still alive at the time of the sex (in which case it was rape) or whether she'd already died (in which case it was only "misconduct with a corpse", which is apparently a lesser offense).
If I remember right, the guy wound up pleading out before the trial was over, so the question was never answered definitively.

She was twelve years from an Alzheimer's diagnosis (and thirty from losing her mother to it), which I gather is on the long end of the curve, and we were blessed with the retention of most of her personality until some kind of infection she picked up a month ago.

We lost a lot of time with her due to covid policies, but we did get to visit her a bunch the last couple of weeks.

She served as a nurse during Vietnam, raised three of us kids, and got a degree in library science late in life, looking to share her love of (mostly scifi and fantasy) books. And she sang in one church choir or another for most of her adult life.

380    I got to following some of that rent-ownership thing. Understand this is where all the "fair housing" and similar advocates are at:
They want the population just about all to be in cities. To protect the precious environment, and eliminate the need for commutes, ie cars, which are killing the environment they think. This is their main concern, and they could care less about housing. Housing is a just hook they use to push this.
They want to greatly expand housing in cities and close around. They hate suburbs and probably rural living even more.
They want us all living in little apartments stacked like sardines, under their complete control.
Pay no attention to what they claim about housing. The above is their goal.

392 They want us all living in little apartments stacked like sardines, under their complete control.
Pay no attention to what they claim about housing. The above is their goal.

Posted by: publius, Rascally etc, etc

Their narrative doesn't match reality.  As of 2018 predictions were that rental capacity would be between three to four million units short.  This was before the great lockdown.  As of March , per the mortgage bankers association, approximately 34 million mortgages are in the serious category ( 90 days or more pd). They don't distinguish between commercial and residential in those numbers but assume at least a third of them are residential.  Prior to 2008, rental availability generally operated with a slight surplus of units. After 2010 ten plus million families entered the rental market.  The surplus disappeared.  It has only gotten worse.  Add to that the superheating costs in building materials and the shortage, IMO, is going to get significantly worse then predicted. I'm thinking their version of "housing " will be camps.

396 Publius is exactly correct.  The yokes they desire and the chains they say are light, are control mechanisms that need to be resisted By Any Means Necessary, after all other remedies have been exhausted.  Recognition of these mechanisms has faded, as control has been lost.
The Meek are Men to be Feared.  This war is never "over".  The ride never ends.  Godzilla would find my butter knife in his foot, should he think I'm an "Easy-Out".
