Morning, ‘rons and ‘ronettes.  HereÂ’s a Betty Grable story:

During the preproduction of Guys and Dolls, producer Sam Goldwyn let it be known that he was interested in Grable for the role of Miss Adelaide, gambler Nathan DetroitÂ’s long-suffering, long-sneezing fiancée.  So GrableÂ’s agent set up a meeting between the two.  Normally, this sort of business would be left to the agent, but Goldwyn was from the old school and liked to speak to his stars personally.

On the day of the meeting, Grable was leaving the house when she heard one of her dogs yelp in pain.  It had injured its paw, and Grable – all thoughts of Goldwyn flying out of her head – carried her pet to the car and drove to the vetÂ’s office.  Once the dog had been sedated and looked after, Grable got on the phone and called Goldwyn, explaining what had happened.  The mogul, hearing he had been stood up for a dog, hung up on her.

A few days later, it was announced that actress Vivian Blaine* would be joining the cast of Guys and Dolls – as Miss Adelaide.

HereÂ’s Grable with co-star Robert Young in a publicity still for of my favorite movies, 1943s Sweet Rosie OÂ’Grady:

And here’s “The Girl with the Million-Dollar Legs” that same year, showing off her luscious gams in Coney Island:

Hope you all have a wonderful day.

One of the perks of being a Hollywood mogul, I'm sure, is that you get to meet starlets.  As to whether this particular mogul  was interested in "speaking"  with his starlets or something else, that I can't say, but still, I'm sure  no one would turn down an opportunity to meet  Betty  Grable, rather than her agent.

I have more than one cat, so I have more than one litter box.  You do the best you can  to ensure that MOST of their business ends up in the box, but occasionally, it doesn't.

I can never predict when that  will happen, but when it does, I know exactly which one did it.

Long version: it is the consequence of treating terrorism as a crime- all analysis is done after the fact to identify suspects and establish guilt.  Proactively identifying threats and mitigating them before tha fact is strictly verboten because it would "violate the civil rights" of the terrorists.

Short version: RACIST!

57 38. shredded chi Years ago, my better half laid a concrete fitting for our flag pole in front of our garden. I chose native shrubs to create a privacy screen with crepe myrtles, tx sage, and ornamental grass, bulbs and bird bath. The mature shrubs snagged the flag despite prunings, so we opted for the miniature garden flag at our entry. We have many US Military personnel and veteran neighbors who fly the flags, national and military branch. The guy across the street flew copters through the Vietnam War. Given the sunshine and breezes, it's always refreshing to see Old Glory unfurled. Today promises to be a beauty outside.

I have a close friend who lives in Alaska, and was up there a couple of years ago visiting.  My friend knows Wasilla well (owns some property and a cabin upcountry from there) and knows where Sarah lives.  We were passing through Wasilla and talking about Sarah, and she tells me this, and I said "Hey, let's drive by her house.  I've love to see where she lives".  My friend says sure, and we turn off the highway and head down her street.

We didn't get very far, as we almost immediately start seeing these "Private Drive, No Trespassing" signs on the street.  Then we spotted a couple of cars with guys in them that fairly screamed "private security", at which point we decided "Hmm, maybe we better turn around and leave", which we did.

But not before we saw...The Fence.

Oh yes, as soon as the Palins heard about this cockholster moving in next door to them in order to do his hit piece on Sarah, ol' Todd puts up this at least 8 foot high wooden fence along the property line between the Palin place and the one where this asshole is staying.  You could see the damn thing from way up the street.  This dickhead McGinness was not going to get any material for his book by peeking over their fence, which is apparently what he had in mind.

Not that I blame Mr. Palin.  If Sarah had been my wife, there would have been a boatload of busted media kneecaps by this time, starting with this prick.  In fact, I'm surprised there were not at least a few bloody noses along the way, as those Alaskan boys are pretty tough as a group and don't take kindly to their women being messed with...

68 Local story on radio news debating "what happened" given a family reunion of sorts, 8 year old boy's request to play with his BB gun is denied, subsequently the parents send their 3 year old to play with his 8 year old cousin outside. What could possibly go wrong... the 8 year old shoots his 3 year old cousin dead with someone's gun. The adults hear the gunshot and run outside. Too little. Too late. And the blowhard "conservative" idjit on the radio is making excuses for the 8 year old. My instant take? Eight year old children have reached the age that they know the difference between right and wrong. And this 8 year old was likely a malcontent and bully. The reason he was denied playing with his BB gun was the adults knew he'd cause trouble, likely as not, shoot and injure his little cousin. And the adults should never have expected such a kid to "babysit" a three year old while the adults sat on their asses visiting. Finally, who the hell had firearms available given such easy access with little kids running around?! Horrible. Trying to make a defense for anyone is useless, they all played a tragic part in the boy-slaughter.

97 That missing flight is getting weirder - they are searching the other side of country because military radar has a track headed west towards the Indian Ocean!

This is certainly reprocessed radar data, maybe even some interferometric/bistatic games to squeeze as much coverage out of what they had as possible - and in doing so you have to be very careful not to see what you are looking for in the data. The management bias will be to regard everything as a possible track.

But, assuming they are doing it right, wtf.  Why would a crippled aircraft that could not communicate head west at a level altitude over at least two countries' airspace.  It been a long time since I glanced at the NoRadio procedures - but I don't think it calls for a constant bearing out to sea.  Whats out there: Maldives, Deigo, ... Somalia, lots of nothing in between.

109 Flying the flag at one's home is not an old American tradition. I'm wondering what it is you perceive in the presence of a flag on someone's property. Do you suppose this marks the occupant as a conservative, for instance?

I witnessed a real eye-opener in one of these little chats once. A guy revealed that he had a regular little flag patio, well back from the road with a partial wall around it, and left his flag up all the time. One day a neighbor was passing by, and stopped in to note that the flag was in rough shape, and really shouldn't be up after dark if not lighted. His response? "That's my fuckin' flag. I can do whatever the hell I want with it. That's what it means to be an American."

Clearly these were two patriots whose patriotism was more patriotic than the other's patriotism. Most of us are more patriotic than the other patriots, now.

I have two matching-height flagpoles, and quite an assortment of flags. I know to which side the US flag goes, and what day it flies at two heights. I fly the US flag on the "flag" holidays, and I don't think of myself as a better American for doing it. And the guys with a car-lot giveaway ductaped to the aerial, like the mayhem guy in the insurance ads?  I don't know. What do you think of them?

115 Anyone who has kids that watch some of the kids' networks on cable knows that the gov't runs ads incessantly - ad nauseum - on channels like Cartoon Network, that doesn't run typical, commercial ads. (My kids don't even watch a lot of TV, but it is on for 45 mins or so in the morning while they're having breakfast and getting ready for school and occasionally for a bit in the evening after homework.) A while back it was all anti-bullying all the time. Now they are constantly running ads showing families who are (comically) unprepared for emergency, disaster scenarios. Doesn't make me feel so good.

132 72 years ago on March 11, 1942 Gen. Douglas MacArthur was evacuated from Corregidor upon the orders of FDR. Traveling 560 miles to Mindanao onboard 4 PT Boats commanded by Lt J. D. Bulkeley, MacArthur and his family, and many of his staff would fly from there to Australia on B17s where he would give his famous, and unauthorized, "I shall return" speech. Interesting account of the PT Boat cruise. http://tinyurl.com/n62vyr2 He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his "heroic defense of the Philippines" on April 1, 1942. Army Chief of Staff Gen. George Marshall recommended the medal and would later state it was for PR reasons (to raise morale). America needed a hero due to the disasters in the Pacific. Depending who you read MacArthur was either a military genius with a few flaws, or a disaster as a general with a few brilliant moments. He probably should have been fired like Gen. Short and Adm. Kimmel, but that brings up some interesting "what if's." How would the Pacific War strategy and the post war dealings with Japan have changed?

170 Didn't some of the scumbags from 9/11 come through Germany? Posted by: Cicero Skip at March 11, 2014 08:56 AM (3m9Uc) Atta was an engineering student in Germany if I remember correctly. He, and one other guy I think, came through Maine on their way to Boston. My dad retired from the airlines two years ago. He was flying on 9/11 out of Logan and watched flight 11 take off right in front of him.

172 109. Posted by: Stringer Davis at March 11, 2014 08:36 ApartiesM (xq1UY) ------------ By no means am I assuming anything about one's political affiliation, or even patriotism by wether or not they display the flag. I just think it's an interesting commentary on modern society. I was walking along, saw a flag, and got to remembering the days when they were almost ubiquitous. At least around here. The fact that even seeing one fly made me take note of it and realize the dearth of them nowadays - made me wonder. The "they gave at the office" comment makes the point perfectly. I have plenty of active duty & retired friends that don't fly the flag, and wouldn't think to do anything ther than thank them for their service (with the new exception of one dickhole). Using the flag at car dealerships & such? Meh. Is the Used Car Salesman down the street more or less of an asshole than Kid Rock? Not up to me to decide.

All I can think of is a strategically placed bomb that destroyed the black box (but....I think there is more than one) and caused a catastrophic failure.

Or....pilot killed the copilot (or vice versa) and just flew it into the ocean.

194 As a Christian I appreciate the encouragement (#74)
As an engineer I need the advice (#76)
As a perpetual moron in training, I want to thank Fenelonspoke for bringing the peace and a godly perspective nearly every day.

From Berton Braley:

More than fame and more than money
is the comment kind and sunny
And the hearty, warm approval of a friend.
For it gives to life a savor,
and it makes you stronger, braver,
    And it gives you heart and spirit to the end;
If he earns your praise - bestow it,
if you like him let him know it,
    Let the words of true encouragement be said;
Do not wait till life is over
    and he's underneath the clover,
For he cannot read his tombstone when he's dead.

207 From The Aviation Herald
http://avherald.com/h?article=4710c69b&opt=0

On Mar 11th 2014 Malaysia's Air Force reported their primary radar data suggest, the aircraft may have turned west over the Gulf of Thailand at about 1000 meters/3000 feet below the original flight level (editorial note: another possible interpretation could be: at 1000 meters of height compared to 10000 meters original level) and flown past the east coast near Khota Baru and the west coast of Malaysia near Kedah, the radar return was last seen at 02:40L near Pulau Perak in the Straits of Malacca, about 285nm westsouthwest of the last known (secondary) radar position. Local Police at Khota Bharu confirmed a number of locals reported lights and a low flying aircraft at Khota Bharu at an estimated height of 1000 meters/3000 feet.

208 The 777-200ER in question. Been flying for almost 12 years. Lost a winglet in a ground taxi accident. How long are the airframes rated for, and has this model had a history of failure? I have to imagine that even with a catastrophic failure of the airframe or the hydraulics that a message would have gotten out before the crash.
