Morning, ‘rons and ‘ronettes.  Grab a cup of tea or coffee and settle down with me for a moment.  HereÂ’s an MGM story that demonstrates how Louis  B.  Mayer saw “his” studio as a family and how quickly Father could exact retribution if he felt you betrayed the family:

Because he read very slowly, Mayer hired a succession of storytellers who could effectively condense and recite the plot of a novel or play the studio was considering purchasing.  One of the best was a woman named Lillie Messinger, who came to MGM from RKO and felt both a deep affection for Mayer and a great respect for his abilities.

It seemed that, one day in the studio commissary, MayerÂ’s table was talking about a certain property which had been bought.  Everyone was excited about it and sure it would be another smash success.  Messinger, however, recalled that the plot line mirrored a current political scandal; after lunch she went to see Mayer, telling him that in her opinion it wasnÂ’t the right moment to make the movie.

To her astonishment, Mayer (acknowledged as the studioÂ’s greatest ham actor) fell on his knees in front of her “Lillie, do you want to sit behind my desk?” he cried.  “You talk as if you know more about making pictures than I do.  Do you want to sit behind that desk and take my place?”

Hurriedly, Messinger tried to explain her point of view, but that only made things worse.  She had wounded Papa, and he didnÂ’t want to see her anymore.  Get out – get out of his sight, ungrateful loaf of bread.  And so she did.  And, taking their cue from the boss, for three months no one at MGM would speak to her.  At the end of that time, she was summoned back to the mogulÂ’s office.

“Did you cry this afternoon at BernieÂ’s funeral?” he asked.  He was referring to the services for Bernie Hyman, a well loved MGM exec.

“Yes, I did.”

“Many people cried,” Mayer went on, “and when I die there will be people who will cry.  You will probably cry at my funeral, but now,” he choked, his eyes filling with tears, “when I need you, you wonÂ’t help me.  You wonÂ’t help me when I need you.”

On and on Mayer went, getting more and more emotional.  “You will cry at my funeral, but now when I need you, you wonÂ’t help me.”  Messinger, who still felt she hadnÂ’t done anything wrong, began to weaken.  Already saddened by HymanÂ’s death, now she was being asked to contemplate MayerÂ’s death and how she had failed that poor, overworked man.  Finally, Messinger let her emotions override her convictions.  She was wrong, she told Mayer.  She apologized for having stated an opinion which conflicted with his.

Instantly, the tears stopped.  Mayer got up off his knees, hugged Messinger and told her all was forgiven.  Her stomach churning, Messinger left the studio, went home and became violently sick the moment she entered the bathroom.

Hope you all have a wonderful day,

43 OK, so what is the big deal about a lunar eclipse?  Am I the only one who has ever seen one for chrissakes?  It's not that big of a deal.  The Moon always looks like this when it passes through the Earth's shadow.  The Moon is still illuminated by sunlight refracted through the Earth's atmosphere during these events.   I forget if the reddish cast is due to a shift in light spectrum, dust in the atmosphere or what, but it's normal in this circumstance.  Saw one of these back in '81 I think it was, and no one ever said a word about "the end of the world", "blood moon" or any of this other happy horseshit.  Geez...

62 This is stunning. And, illegal. Virginia cops constantly photograph random people’s license plates ... The disturbing discovery was made by Katie Watson, an investigative reporter with Watchdog.org’s Virginia bureau. Watson submitted a public records request with the Alexandria Police Department for all information the police had about her. Watson already knew that the police used automatic license plate recognition software to collect information. What she didn’t know was how pervasive the surveillance was. ... “From my research and interviews on police and ALPR technology for Watchdog.org, I was pretty sure they would have something of my records,” she told The Daily Caller. “But I have to admit I was pretty shocked to see police had taken pictures of my license plate while my car was safely inside my apartment complex’s parking lot.” Police took 16 photos of Watson’s car over a six month period. In March, police photographed her car while she was on her way to Bible study. ALPR technology picked her up again as recently as April 1. smells like targeting, doesn't it? http://tinyurl.com/ljtpl63

Robinson, John Garfield, etc.  It was pretty funny, as these things tend to be, with lots of blown lines, stumbles, missteps, falls and the like.  And you can bet this was NEVER meant for public consumption, as you never heard so much unedited-out cussing in your life, certainly not from people in this time frame.  In my naivete I'd always thought this "blooper reel" thing got started back in the 1970s with the Star Trek blooper reels, but obviously not...

Damned if I can decode the following to reality-speak.  I may have to diagram out the sentences:

"More than 100 trans women have signed a letter denouncing two recent articles about the TV show "RuPaul's Drag Race" use of the pun "She-mail" to refer to viewer mail:

"We, the undersigned trans women and trans-feminine individuals, are appalled at recent attacks on trans woman journalist Parker Marie Molloy published by Calpernia Addams and Andrea James on the Huffington Post and Boing Boing. AddamsÂ’ and JamesÂ’ hit pieces exhibit a pervasive hostility to young, queer trans women, and indeed any trans woman who is uncomfortable with the use of transmisogynist slurs by cisgender drag queens like RuPaul. They display homophobia, transphobia, ignorance, dishonesty, and hatred throughout."

88 Russia Tests Multi-Warhead ICBM The SS-27 Mod 2 road-mobile ICBM was launched around 2:40 a.m. EST from Russia’s Plesetsk launch facility, located about 500 miles north of Moscow. “The main purpose of the launch is to validate the reliability of a batch of this class of missiles made at the Votkinsk Plant,” Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Yegorov told state-run Interfax-AVN. An unspecified number of simulated nuclear warheads landed at an impact range on the Kura test range on the Kamchatka Peninsula, in the Russian Far East, Yegorov said. The distance is around 3,500 miles. The SS-27 Mod 2 is Russia’s newest ICBM and has been touted by Russian officials as designed specifically to defeat U.S. missile defenses. freebeacon

Good news, everyone!:

The EFF is reporting that the FBI's new facial recognition database, containing data for almost a third of the US population, will be ready to launch this summer.

Codenamed NGI, the system combines the bureau's 100 million-strong fingerprint database with palm prints, iris scans and mugshots. Naturally, this has alarmed privacy advocates, since it's not just felons whose images are added, but anyone who has supplied a photo ID for a government job or background check.

According to the EFF's documents, the system will be capable of adding 55,000 images per day, and could have the facial data for anything up to 52 million people by next year.

I made it through last year on a third of what I usually make.
If it was not for self employment tax I would have negative liability.
--I won't be waiting for my check.
My company of five got paid every week without fail, although I worked six days a week for the last three years without a vacation.

My business partner sat on his rear but still gets half.
(His *one* responsibility, the Sch. K, got done so late I have to file for an extension, while his are done on time.)
Slowly, ever so slowly, I am clawing back and paying back the loan I gave the company three years ago to keep it all afloat.

So suck it FSA!  What you are getting from me will not even pay the electric bill for your Obamaphone charger!

I don't want to talk to you no more, you empty headed animal food trough wiper. I fart in your general direction. Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries!

183 From Powerline:

That being the case, why does Bundy deserve our sympathy? To begin with, his family has been ranching on the acres at issue since the late 19th century. They and other settlers were induced to come to Nevada in part by the federal governmentÂ’s promise that they would be able to graze their cattle on adjacent government-owned land. For many years they did so, with no limitations or fees. The Bundy family was ranching in southern Nevada long before the BLM came into existence.

Over the last two or three decades, the Bureau has squeezed the ranchers in southern Nevada by limiting the acres on which their cattle can graze, reducing the number of cattle that can be on federal land, and charging grazing fees for the ever-diminishing privilege. The effect of these restrictions has been to drive the ranchers out of business. Formerly, there were dozens of ranches in the area where Bundy operates. Now, his ranch is the only one. When Bundy refused to pay grazing fees beginning in around 1993, he said something to the effect of, they are supposed to be charging me a fee for managing the land and all they are doing is trying to manage me out of business. Why should I pay them for that?

Where are the fucking libs who whine about all the "Mom and Pop" stores that Walmart purportedly drives out of bidness?  And the usual suspects here who think Bundy's the villain are why we keep getting dogshit candidates like McCain and Romney and losing elections.

Since crops began going dormant in November, conditions deteriorated by the most in five years...

I actually put a little effort (minimum, mind you) into keeping track of the terminology of the "Transwhatever" movement, mainly out of morbid curiosity. But "trans-feminine" is a new one to me.

That "community" can't even keep its language straight between themselves and frequently attack one another over lack of sensitivity without any hint of irony, or even sanity.

Who would have thought that reducing language to meaninglessness (gender=social construct) would have resulted in such confusion?

244 Case, I was born & raised here. I wish it was otherwise but most of what is left of my family is in Massachusetts. The exception is my sick brother in Maine. I called a rehab here yesterday to beg them to take him out of ME & get him here. He only went to ME because he fell in love with a crazy bitch & now that heÂ’s a quadriplegic has no one there. We have a cousin in ME but he hardly goes to see him, he hates seeing him like that.

245 I'm guessing "trans-feminine" are transvestites and not the full-on dick-chopper psychos.

It's the mega-church pastor asking for the ten percent.. God asks for nothing..

That sounds catchy, Jerry, but it's just not true.  The teaching of the tithe goes back all the way to the days of the Patriarchs and continues through the New Testament.  Here is just a sampling of Bible verses that deal with acknowledging the Lordship of God by setting aside a portion of your earnings for His purposes.  It's extensive:

247 The only reason anyone even knows Kate Upton's name is because of her boobs. STFU Kate! Personally, I thank God for my DD's every damn day. The inconveniences of having big boobs are FAR outweighed by the benefits that big boobs provide.

248 Mr. Scribbler, I have to drive into Boston today! I am not looking forward to it. They are making this a publicity stunt. They have Boylston St shut down, I will have a bitch of a time getting a space in the garage. I usually donÂ’t work on Wednesdays. IÂ’m very close to calling & saying I will come in tomorrow & stay home today instead.

249 Re: cost of smokes. Do what I do. Make your own. Initial investment in machine: $45. Box of 200 filter tubes: $4. 1Lb. bag of pipe tobacco: $18 (same as cigarette tobacco except longer cut but taxed alot less). 1 Lb. makes about 1.5 cartons. Comes out to about $1.50/pack. All the difference in price is taxes. Smoke cheap and starve the beast. It's all good.

250 Yes.. the idea goes back to Biblical times.. the practice, nowadays, finances lavish lifestyles of the clergy and their grandiose plans for ever bigger churches.  Some of them are obscene.

251 Scont, I do not smoke but MA just adds a $1 per pack tax when ever they need money! I donÂ’t know how many dollars is is per pack now. ItÂ’s probably at least $4 in additional taxes.

You need to get out to some different churches.

Mine?  We don't even have a building.  We started by meeting in homes.  Now we meet in a movie theater.  We run on 400 volunteers.  Next month our offering is going to sponsor a prom for retarded teenagers.  Last months offering went to stock the pantries of our local Salvation Army.

I'm not saying this to boast.  I'm saying this to break through the stereotypes.

Kind of a broad brush there, don't you think? My pastor leads a lifestyle that one might charitably call "utilitarian." OTOH, the church funds a food bank, coordinates people to help the poor fix things in their houses, helps provide short term child care to help the poor go on job interviews, collects clothes and things for the needy, and similar activities. Hardly obscene.

255 Cameron diaz was definately prettier than Kate when she was 21, she's now 41.

She might not of had the the level of decolletage but she was a stone cold fox.

Maybe this is insane, but as I get older I find older women more attractive than younger ones.

Nope.  I feel the same way.  I'd jump over 10 air-headed Kate Uptons to get at one fiftysomething zaftig babe.  At least then I stand a better chance of my head not exploding the moment she opens her mouth...

257 @ grammie winger I have always said that, if we had a country where everyone tithed 10% to church and/or charity, paid 10% in taxes and saved 10%, we would be a whole helluva lot better off. I denounce my self!
