The 1%: The Top 1% of Recording Artist Superstars Capture 77% of All Purchases/Money From Internet-Based Sales; the Remaining 99% Divide the Remaining 23% of Revenues
— Ace

Well.

Music industry analyst Mark Mulligan’s MIDiA Consulting has published a new report exploring the ‘superstar artist economy’. It suggests that while artists’ share of total recorded-music income has grown from 14% in 2000 to 17% in 2013, the top 1% of musical works are now accounting for 77% of all those artist revenues thanks in part to a “tyranny of choice” on digital services.

“The democratisation of access to music distribution has delivered great benefits for artists but has contributed to even greater confusion for fans, ironically culminating in an intensification of the superstar effect, with the successful artists relative share of the total pot of musical works getting progressively smaller,” as he puts it.

...

The report takes pains to point out that “superstar” artists aren’t necessarily just those signed to major labels, noting that a number of independent artists have broken into the 1% tier. It’s also clear that this isn’t just a digital phenomenon – witness the 75% share that the top 1% of artists take in physical sales. But the report is likely to fuel more arguments about whether streaming pays off for smaller artists.

Whether they're "independent" or not, they're still the top 1%. Technology is making the idea of a "record company" obsolete to the point of quaintness, anyway.

I'd be interested in hearing from the top 1% of the recording industry about their thoughts on the top 1% of earners in all other fields -- and why they (presumably) support their own claim to the vast majority of all income, but oppose 1%ers in other fields similarly taking home a greatly disproportionate share of all revenues.

Stratospheric revenues are had when someone is either selling the same thing (the same book, the same song) to a massive group of people (like the huge American market) or when someone is in charge of a large corporation serving a huge national market (NABISCO -- the National Biscuit Corporation -- demonstrated this 100 years or so ago).

Some jobs will never pay all that much, either because it's too easy to find someone else to do the job (too much supply) or because the worker spends a great deal of his personal time on each run of production. A brain surgeon, for example, has a skill in ridiculously high demand -- people would, if needed, trade most of their income just to live. But a brain surgeon, unlike Beyonce, cannot just print up 100,000 copies of his brain surgeries and sell them to people. Every surgery requires at least days of research and consultation and at least a day of actual surgery. No matter how important his skill, he can never sell it in a massively reproduced way such as to make as much money as Jay-Z.

This is the way of the world. It's not fair, but it's also not plainly unjust, either.

But I do notice that people who can reap the huge benefits of massively reproduced labor being sold many times -- such as movie stars -- never seem to notice that they themselves are the beneficiaries of the same basic principle that makes the CEO of a large corporation so rich.

Years ago, Warren Beatty was asked about this unfairness -- the unfairness that a star like him could (at one point) command a fee of $5 million or more while most actors were paid scale or just above it, and could barely find work 8 months out of every year. He was asked to reconcile this with his own well-known socialist leanings.

All Beatty said was this: "The star system is central to how Hollywood makes movies." As if this answers the question at all.

What he was really saying is "That's just the way it is, and I'm the beneficiary of that system, so eff you, I'm fine with it."

Would that he were capable of generalizing from his own experience.

5 The top 1% get most of the revenue because record companies are afraid to invest any money in rookie artists, because like rookie book writers, there are more losers than winners.

And as far as getting money from people, they get very little from me as most of the records I buy are from stuff 50 years old or older.

20 The "democratization" of the music industry is akin to what's going on in other forms of entertainment as well. However, the investment needed to complete a product and offer it for sale (a nicely produced recording) is much smaller than in, say a feature length film.

That will "dilute" the potency of a "superstar" because there are so many more choices and genres represented.  But that's a good thing.

The move to digital means they can only charge you once for music now...which cut off one of their ridiculous cash flows.

On the one hand the argument was that you were buying a license for the music and therefore copying it to another cassette to give to someone else was theft...which is fair...

But then turning around and arguing that you should not be able move your music to newer platforms and should instead have to rebuy was asinine.

51 Part of that is likely driven by a huge influx of low-selling artists due to the lowered barriers to entry. I could record an album in my garage and sell it online. No one would buy it of course, but I would then be part of the 99% discussed in this article.

52 This is a great example of the law of unintended consequences.

I would have bet that essentially unlimited bandwidth and storage, coupled with decreased production costs would allow people to expand their choices, and that would have smoothed out the revenue distribution by opening markets to artists who could never get anywhere in the old system.

It's as if the market has a mind of its own and will do what it will do!

Regardless of what the big licensing turds say, that case was adjudicated long ago.  You can make all the copies you want for your devices as long as they are for your use alone.  Once you give a copy to someone else, or heaven forbid, sell a copy you have crossed fair use into copyright violation.

57 My preferred genre, Progressive Rock, (nothing to do with progressive politics) is flourishing through social media and the internet. After being declared dead and gone for almost two decades, Prog made a big comeback right about the time the 'net got big. With the ability to reach fans all across the world, the world got smaller, fans were able to get in topuch with each other, start fan sites, start forums like Progressive Ears and ProgArchives, even get money together to put on festivals. Pre-ordering Glass Hammer's Ode to Echo today on Amazon. They are one of the many bands that have used social media to make a living at what was once a dead genre. Their lead singer is also the current lead singer in YES. Nice guys too. They'll sign your CD and ship it free if you order direct from them. They are from Chattanooga and they have (gasp) God lyrics sometimes, and they wear (faint!) Christian cross t-shirts on occasion.

Producing the recording is only a tiny tiny tiny fraction of making money from music.  The distribution and play model where you get all the teenaged girls and guys humming a song while doing something else is what makes a superstar.  Getting them to the point where the only thing they want for their birthday is concert tickets to that one band (One Direction, Fallout Boy, whatever) is the result of a vast network of people's work.

I don't care for most of the mainstream crap I hear on the radio these days, so these top 1% of recording artists are getting maybe 10% of my overall music budget.    MAYBE 10%.   That's actually probably pretty high.

I buy most of    my    music through Amazon at this point.   The great thing is, with a lot of their CDs, if you buy the CD you get an "Autorip" of all the songs on it, which are automatically saved to the Amazon Cloud Drive for you.  So you can have a physical CD if that's what you want (I do tend to prefer them, and    yes,   I know I'm a dinosaur)   or you can access your digital tunes anywhere you can access your Cloud Player.

They've also got GREAT sampler albums    each month that are free of charge.   You can find a lot of great new and emerging artists, and some already  established names,   "purchasing" those.

Of course, they're wrong.

They're talking about incremental outreach, appealing to black issues, doing republican community development etc.

Jeebuz, that is so wrong.  Do not pander to "black issues".  Reach a black audience, sure, and explain that an economy that creates jobs is good for them, defense from the bear is good for them, the right to self-defense is good for them, same as it's good for every other variety of human.

The important issues are color-blind.  (well, should be. you know what I mean).

202 But many of the 1% are involved in the day to day management of  corporations that can and do determine the wages and compensation of the 99%.

And that's the difference.

The 1% have increased their compensation in many cases by exporting jobs to other countries while laying off workers here. They also pay for lobbying efforts to cause the laws that let them profit immensely from those actions while still remaining here.

Many of their lobbying efforts are to make it HARDER for others to make a living or to make it illegal for them to do certain things that would mean competition for the larger corporations.

And that's what's unfair about the income differences.

Not that they make more, but that they make proportionately more AND create the conditions that make others unemployed, poorer or unable to increase their income.

The idea rests on competition among schools.  The money follows the student, so the school with the best price/features will win.  And it's a constant compaign to attract and keep students, so they have to maintain themselves to warrant that money.  It should be like any other service provider.

___________

If the market works correctly the extra demand for private schools will be met with extra supply, ie more schools opening up. Which will keep price in check.

Only way price goes up is if the extra demand cannot be met by extra supply, ie not enough schools can be opened. Which is a possibility in the short term since it takes time to build new schools, staff them, etc. But in the long run, prices should stabilize.

Completely original, stunningly executed, breathtaking in its complete disregard for "the rules" and fascinating in its idiosyncracity. A work of pure genius from a band who virtually invented not only a new style of music, but a new way of playing the guitar (and don't gimme that "Jimmy Page did it first' shit-Page used a bow for cheap effect. Sigur Ros uses it as a completely new way to play guitar.) Their albums since have basically been variations on the same theme, but AB is a freakin' masterpiece.

250 Sigur Ros's agaetis Byrjun is one of the greatest albums of the past 40 years. 255 "Only way price goes up is if the extra demand cannot be met by extra supply, ie not enough schools can be opened. Which is a possibility in the short term since it takes time to build new schools, staff them, etc. But in the long run, prices should stabilize." Don't think about it in the traditional private school model. For a K through 3rd grade operation, the typical "school" might be a 400 sq ft storefront in a strip mall with only 10 students. All within walking distance of their homes.

I remember when radio stations had regional character, and after dark, you could search the AM band for channels and music you'd never heard before (and never would again).  I remember once picking up a Hawaiian station.  It was a big deal at the time.  Nowadays, it would be playing exactly the same pap that's on the local channel, and might even be playing the same songs at the same time.

It's been over a decade since I've been introduced to a new group by the radio.  The internet, public performances, and personal recommendations are pretty much it.

269 Real world experiences and real world hobbies beats make believe and lets' pretend fantasy experiences and pastimes, every day of the week.

I have no beef with entertainment, be it sports, film, tv.  People need to blow off steam, and sometimes watching a funny show or catching a game really reduces stress.

I draw the line at using it to control people, bread-and-circuses style.  Which is why I no longer watch much TV (except for How Its Made, Time Warp, and Duck Dynasty).  I use Grooveshark for music (and Wireshark is a nice compliment to Grooveshark, IYKWIM).

And, quite frankly, the movie industry is creatively bankrupt and doesn't deserve my attention.

275 The public school situation is this: If you have a school-age kid in an area where the unions run the show, you have some options: a) Private $chool (around here $2K a month) b) Home schooling (practical for some, not for many others) c) Kissing up to the existing power structure You can go out and advocate for change, you can try to get charter schools going, etc etc etc but the reality is that your kid enters the system at 5 and by the time any sort of real structural change gets through the bureaucracy, the voters, and the courts Junior's in his or her second year of college and YOU, and JUNIOR, don't benefit from anything that you've been battling for. So in such an environment most parents look toward their own interests and do what they can within the system. Right? Maybe, maybe not. Doesn't fix the long-term problem. But it's reality.

340 From NYT story:

"The median 12th-grade tuition for the current school year was $36,970, up from $21,100 in 2001-2, according to the national associationÂ’s survey. Nationally, that figure rose to $24,240 from $14,583 a decade ago."

So median nationally is $24K and median in NYC is $37K.

Which means outside of NYC, Boston, CT and a handful of other coastal cities, the median is well under $20K.

353 Actually, we do pay public school teachers all that money. A lot of it in the form of very generous retirement and health care benefits. A lot of it is also that nowadays there are as many non-teaching staff as teaching staff at the typical public school. And they get the generous retirement and health care, too. The retirements benefits really are huge, since you can retire fairly young. Everyone conveniently forgets to include the value of the retirement and health benefits when talking about "low" teacher pay. The extremely high job security is also a huge benefit that few other jobs can offer.

447 197 I'm for school choice but I don't understand how vouchers WON'T jack up the tuition prices of private schools? Can anyone explain that? Posted by: votermom at March 06, 2014 02:48 PM (GSIDW) ----------------------------- They WILL jack up the tuition at private schools, just as government handouts have jacked up the tuition of colleges. You do have to have a price-control mechanism in place. What I would do is figure the cost per pupil of public education in the jurisdiction. Say it's $12,000. That's your voucher value. (Or you could undercut it a bit.) Any school that charges more is not eligible for vouchers. None. Zip. So the people sending their kids to the $30,000 preppy school will get nada, i.e., the same that they get now. (They will be no worse off.) OTOH, the people sending their kids to St. Mary of Sorrows or Bible Thumper Academy or The Community Hippie Un-schooling Center, all of which have tuition well below $12,000, would get the vouchers. And yes, their tuition would rise to the $12K, but they'd have to spend it wisely to be competitive with all the other established or new schools cropping up.

452 Seamus Muldoon at March 06, 2014 03:39 PM (g4TxM) Yeah, I've seen that FDR list. Positive rights vs negative rights vis a vis the FDR rights vs the Bill of Rights. One powerfully good. The other powerfully pernicious and destructive.

453 The problem is that the welfare state subsidizes celebrities by giving money to people who will spend more of it on paying to watch celebrities. Put another way, spending by those who work for a living is less celebrity-driven than spending by those who do not work for a living.

454 These studies and data are kind of bs, in that no artist is getting that money.  Those are revenues for their work, which primarily go to the labels that sponsor them.  A proper study would look at revenues that go to labels, then artists, then compare from there.

Clearly most of the money goes to the big artists that get the label support, but the true money to artists would be a different story.  Of course, labels wouldn't want anyone to see that, so instead we go in on stats of income derived from an artist and going to any other place but them.
