Overnight Open Thread

I would be real curious to see if even 1 person actually Ordered Up A Facebook Girlfriend. I mean, seriously, to pay someone to pretend they're something that they aren't? And would this behavior really work on making someone think that you are just that much cooler? Maybe I'm missing something but I guess there is some truth in the saying that there's a sucker born every minute.

At the time of writing, a quick search for “facebook girlfriend” on the site showed that there were 156 such ads on the site in total. Will these women just take your money and run or will they actually do what they say? Are those real pictures of said women or is there just a bot behind them making money for someone else by using fake Facebook accounts?

A broader search for just “facebook” gave me 8,311 results, most of which are poorly written like the ones above, and offer sketchy deals in exchange for your money. I think a fair share of these just take your money and run, but most probably really do give you what you want, in the hopes that you’ll get hooked and come back for more.

And then there is this tidbit sent in from genghis. Fake Boyfriends Fill The Gap For Lonely Women. This actually takes it from the cyber world and brings it into the real world. Crazy. more...

Gingrich Wins Big
South Carolina Returns Thread

— Ace

The call was made immediately at 7, so he must be out in front comfortably.

Most likely it'll be Gingrich, and maybe by a big margin -- the latest poll has it 40% Gingrich, 26% Romney, 18% Paul, 13% Santorum.

Polls will close at 7 Eastern. If Gingrich is as far ahead as the polls suggest, there could be a quick call.

At Hot Air, Allah quotes an analysis suggesting that while Gingrich may do well in South Carolina and Florida, Romney's organizational and money advantages will increasingly aid him.

Megaupload Founder In Need Of SOPA On a ROPA
— andy

Thursday the feds took action to shut down Megaupload.com, and cops in New Zealand arrested the founder of the file sharing site and alleged megaviolator of copyright laws.

In a dramatic, digital-age stand-off that played like a scene from a Hollywood thriller, dozens of New Zealand police backed by helicopters swarmed the barricaded mansion of Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom to arrest him on Friday for Internet copyright theft.

Police had to cut their way through electronic locks to a safe room, where they discovered Dotcom - also known as Kim Schmitz - with a firearm.

Well, that was dramatic.

AoSHQ instant analysis: anyone who'd call himself "Dotcom" is clearly a massive tool who should get 10 years for that alone.

Related: why do we need SOPA again? Seems like existing laws are working fine here.

South Carolina Weather [Truman North]
— Open Blogger

The weather looks like crap for this afternoon and evening, with light to heavy rain, and even some tornado warnings to the conservative West of the state.

In my opinion, this favors the mythical Fourth Candidate and his sweet, sweet Nazi gold. Secondarily, it favors Mitt Romney, who has the best ground game, and fewer conservative supporters than the other three candidates.

What do you think? more...

So, did you guys know it was Penguin Awareness Day? I guess that explains all the penguins on the Bing site today. Oh well. In light of this special day, how about a game of Bloody Pingu? You guys remember that game right? You know, the one where you are the Abominable Snowman who swings a club at a penguin and see how far you can hit it? Ah, good times. I think Chemjeff still has the record. I just don't remember what it was. more...

Connecticut Bond Rating Downgraded
— LauraW

Response from The Hon. Gov. Dannel Malloy, (D) El Segundo-Supremo Issuer of Unconstitutional Executive Orders and Union Puppet?

“Connecticut has done all the right things to shore up our finances, and Moody’s has responded with a downgrade intended to satisfy their internal corporate need to deflect attention from their big stupid stupid stupid dummyheads and historic lack of credibility.”

That quote was uhhhhh, edited for nuance.
